Gramm to continue as McCain adviser and surrogate.

Last week, Phil Gramm, Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) “econ brain,” said that America is a “nation of whiners” suffering from a “mental recession.” In response, McCain said that Gramm “does not speak for me,” and McCain policy adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin asserted that Gramm would no longer be giving McCain advice. Today, however, Robert Novak reports that “Gramm will continue as an adviser and surrogate“:

After Sen. John McCain publicly repudiated his close friend and adviser Phil Gramm’s comments about a “nation of whiners” and a “mental recession,” the two old political comrades patched up their relationship.

Gramm apologized to McCain for his remarks that gave Democrats an opening against the Republican presidential candidate and provided several days of ammunition for blogs, cable television and radio talk shows. McCain told Gramm not to worry about the expected pitfalls of a campaign surrogate. Gramm will continue as an adviser and surrogate.

OMG! Obama was just handed ANOTHER jewel. With Gramm-cracker and Carly the Company destroyer still on the bus, it continues to be such a target-rich environent.

    Whoohoo!

Now let’s hope McCain picks Gramm as his running mate. Now THAT would be a dream ticket!

Obviously McCain doesn’t diagree with Gramm or why else would he continue to be advised by him?

    Of course he is.

    McCain is WORSE than Bush!

The difference is that Bush is dangerous out of ignorance. McCain is intentionally dangerous.

  8. Fan of Man says:

hell yeah! mccain can now get discounted porn or even maybe star in a “log cabin republican” feature….

    yuck.

  9. moondancer says:

If you were a casting director looking for the prototypical corrupt senator turned corrupt lobbyist, Phil Gramm will crawl from under a rock and be your man.

  10. unbelievable says:

Gramm was only sorry for getting caught, not for insulting struggling Americans!

Wake up Independents! Sure Obama has his issues, but they are mere ant hills compared to McCain’s Mt. Everest of problems.

  11. cavjam says:

Gramm will continue as an adviser and surrogate.

So, pornographic film producer Enron Phil will continue to be linked to McCain. Will Obama use Gramm’s dismantling of Glass-Steagall, the prime cause of the subprime crisis, to bludgeon McCain? In a Hanoi heartbeat. Heckuva job, Johnnie!

  12. Exit Stage Left says:

We should issue awards for policy gaffes by McNimrod and his surrogates. We could call them GRAMMies :)~

“McCain told Gramm not to worry about the expected pitfalls of a campaign surrogate.”

McCain: “Hey there Phil! Tough break man!”
    Gramm: “Thanks.”
McCain: “No one could have predicted you’d call America a nation of whiners—certainly not me and least of all you!
Its totally not your fault that you pissed-off so many potential voters, it could happen to anyone. So don’t worry about it.”
    Gramm: “Okay, I won’t”
McCain: “And don’t listen to all those whiners whining about how you just called them all whiners—they’re all whiny whining whiners for chris’sake!”

I think Krusty gives the chimp a serious run for the stoopid crown. It’s not clear, but the more I see of the codger, the more I think the guy is clueless.

I am at a loss to see any value in the Rethuglican efforts to keep the quo in the same status except to perpetrate their own greed. It seems as though the politicians spin in their own orbit and conduct their own circle-jerk and expect everybody to accept their bleatings as true. Granted there are a few sheepies with IQs less than their shoe size that will believe all the claptrap but as we have seen they are about 20% of those polled. If the pollsters can’t rig their polls better than 20% then there really is a disconnect between the McSames and reality.

It is a given that McPain has no chance in hell of ever winning an honest election. It then behooves us to write him off and convince others, including TP, to focus on outing the entire Culture of Corruption commonly known as the GOP and ensure a completely honest election. TP should have a continuing DAILY post of all the Rethugs and Rethug sycophants who have been suspected, accused, arraigned, tried, and sentenced. The list should include their current political status and plans to run again so that our efforts can be concentrated in a drive to assure that no incumbent Rethug is reelected and that new faces are thoroughly examined to find the warts.

  16. JMOHR says:

Link this item to the other story below that McCain missed the last two years worth of Senate Armed Services Committee meetings on Afghanistan. Now, what are we hearing through the MSM on these stories? How does it compare to the attacks on John Kerry for missing days in the senate during his campaign? How does it compare to the allegations that Gore was deceptive on the internet while McCain disowns and then re-embraces Gramm? Obama better get kicking with ads to define McCain for the slime that he has become. They are still far too close in the polls given the Bush years. The MSM will never tell the truth.

McCain has become senile. Aside from that, he’s no where near as ignorant as Bush. Don’t let him fool you with his forgetful old man facade.

McCain now knows there were/are no WMDs in Iraq and yet he still thinks invading the country was a good idea. I’m pretty certain they lied to the Chimp to make him seem credible.

McCain has given plenty of signs that he is not a religious man, yet he is anti-abortion, misogynistic and racist on his own terms. The Chimp truly believes that his god talks to him, and therefore he acts out of the ignorance of his faith.

There in lies two examples of why McCain is worse and more intentionally dangerous. There are plenty more.

    non_prophet Says:

McCain is a big joke. Nobody takes that old senile jerk serious.

We better take McCain serious, the Republican Party is hell bent on him going into office, everyone must work to prevent this from happening and not let up on our guard, the United States must have a change in the White House.

  19. paleolib says:

Perfect. Gramm publicly refused to recant one word of his “nation of whiners” comment other than to lie about its meaning but privately apologized to McCain because the public comments which he believes to be true reflected badly on the candidate. Gramm knows his pejorative opinion of Americans is not popular with we the little people but will continue to advise McCain accordingly. McCain thinks this is swell.

  20. Shinning Light says:

    Re: JMOHR-
Obama wants to take the high road, but were the tables turned, the GOP, FAUX Opinion & Swift Boat types would not hesitate to use this stuff.

Surrogates and ads HAVE to come out to point out this stuff on the Tube, because many well meaning people don’t have YouTube.

Believe it or not, a lot of people still don’t have internet & email and so are only exposed to the cable garbage & AM radio thugs. Just the other night at a local Democratic town meeting, I spent a good bit of the time trying to debunk some of the mis-information. (Chinese actively drilling off Cuba, all the Gulf oil wells held up to Katrina, etc.)

All rethuglicans are corporate whores like Phil Gramm. The Enron failure is on his hands along with his wife, the mortgage crises and now the high gasoling prices due to the Enron Loophole created with legislation championed by the hero. McSame is more of failed policies. Decide for yourselves America, want more of failed policies?

  25. Aanya says:

Good, let Phil Graham remain with McCain. We can use his shady past dealings against McCain as the election gets closer. We can start with the bank regulations that Phil Graham began chipping away at, that has left the banks in such a vulnerable position today! There’s nothing more dangerous than an old man who is too stuck in his ways to get rid of the dead wood.

  26. LibertyLover says:

    Wow. Never saw THAT coming.

    /snark off

  27. christopher wiwi says:

That`s right Johnny keep Whiner Gramm on your team all the way through November and get your a$$ kicked by us liberals, progressives and democrats and you Mr. Mcwars will be whinning all the way home.

  28. GeeDubs says:

Gosh…ANOTHER flip-flop. Do you think the American public will vote for a guy that keeps the guy who brought you the mortgage mess?

  29. Marie says:

    FLIP-FLOP
How long did that take — a week?
Will people forget what Gramm said? Will the media remind them? The arrogance, the hubris, the let-them-eat-cake attitude of the rich Republiscum is just too much to bear.
Bush&CO, McCain, Repugs, — May they all find themselves in hell.

  30. Marie says:

    Double flip flop

Gramm has resigned. In – out – back in – now out.
