Iglesias: Rove Won’t Testify ‘To Keep Himself From Being Indicted’

Last week, Karl Rove ignored a subpoena and refused to testify before Congress, choosing instead to take a trip abroad. This morning, David Iglesias, one of the U.S. Attorneys politically purged under Alberto Gonzales, told MSNBC’s Mike Barnicle he believed Rove “had information that…would show illegal activity” and thus will refuse to testify “to keep himself from being indicted”:

IGLESIAS: Which I believe is the reason why he is refusing to testify in front of the Congress. He has information that I believe would show illegal activity, interfering with ongoing federal criminal investigations. So Rove is not testifying I think basically to keep himself from being indicted.

Barnicle also asked Iglesias whether Rove played a role in his firing, to which Iglesias replied, “Absolutely”:

BARNICLE: Do you think he has anything to do with your being dismissed?

IGLESIAS: Absolutely. The evidence is clear that he relayed, he took a call from Pete Domenici about me that he talk to the state party chairman here. He was very involved in something he had no business being involved in which is, you know, the oversight of a federal investigation and a federal prosecutor.

Watch it:

But Rove’s involvement in the politicization of the Justice Department may extend further. Besides his alleged interference in the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, Marcy Wheeler recently revealed a June letter from special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald in which he suggested that Rove tried to fire him in 2005, in the middle of his investigation of Rove.

Last week, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) insisted that if Rove continued to ignore her committee’s subpoena, he “absolutely” should go to jail.

Transcript:

BARNICLE: In your discussions with the other U.S. Attorneys, does the name Karl Rove ever come up?

IGLESIAS: Many, many times. Which I believe is the reason why he is refusing to testify in front of the Congress. He has information that I believe would show illegal activity, interfering with ongoing federal criminal investigations. So Rove is not testifying I think basically to keep himself from being indicted.

BARNICLE: Do you think he has anything to do with your being dismissed?

UpdateBrave New Films released a new video today demanding, "Send Karl Rove To Jail."

RoverBoy is amongst the slimiest of all scum. Maybe he's even tied with Darth Cheney in that department. I hope that justice catches up with him soon so that he doesn't end up skipping through with the blanket pardon that GDumbya will be giving himself and all members of his mal-administration.

Conyers and Sanchez have both recently posted at huffpo about what a disgrace this situation is......

You should go read the comments. Not very pretty.
They took a thumpin from "we the people".

  4. StratRat Says:

Probably the only good thing to happen from this business is that the entire planet knows who and what Karl Rove is. They understand he was a Lee Atwater protege, and was groomed from the start to be an expert on 'wet work' and dirty tricks.

It is also clear the dems seem frightened of bringing Rover in for a talk under oath. Why would that be?

  5. barfly Says:

Nancy, if you want us to stop raging for impeachment, there's a simple remedy:

Bring us the head of Karl Rove, on a political platter. Show us you can do something, other than triangulate.

  6. barfly Says:

I mean, If Rove were called to testify, and implicated himself, it would triple congress' approval ratings overnight.

  7. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Then Rove should be pleading the Fifth Amendment (which he can do) and not Executive Privilege (which he can't do). And, yes, the president is the one improperly claiming EP, but that doesn't mean Rove has to obey him (which he can't do, because EP doesn't apply here, because Rove already said he never had any conversations with the president about this.) Can't have it both ways, Rove. You can't say you never discussed things with the president, and then say you can't talk about this because it would reveal your conversations with the president. One way or the other, you're lying.

At the very least, you are doing everything you can to avoid being forced to tell the truth under threat of imprisonment. And you won't get away with it forever.

  8. upside99 Says:

Rove has got to be feeling the wagons circling, just a little. Why else would he leave the country to avoid testifying?

But if we don't keep after him on this, then NO ONE should ever honor a House Subpoena ever again.

Yeah, from half a squat to a squat-and-a-half.

  10. CitiDC Says:

What role does Rove continue to play in advising the Bush Administration?

A recent book suggested that Bush fired Rove in church. But Rove claimed JUST LAST WEEK while at a conference in Sweden (where he was ignoring the Congressional subpoena) that he talks to bush "every few days" and has lunch with him "every couple of weeks."

Here's the video where Rove says so:
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=JZuvXnppA6o

Why not call Rove to testify to describe his relationship NOW with Bush. If he claims "executive privilege" for these post-employment meetings, then you know he's on very thin ice.

  11. robbez_92107 Says:

I wonder if this would work in any Superior Court, downtown, in any city in America?

  12. Witch1 Says:

My spin on all these corrupt people in this administration is quite diffrent than most...First we have the bush bunch, including rover boy and then we have a smattering of block and tackeler's from the dem's side....Now given the status of people like palosi, reid and other's it may account for why it is taking so damn long to bring the bush bunch to the level of accountability..It has to be obvious to all here that all these polatician's have "dirty skirt's and spend a log time trying to clean up their own laundry before they consider sending all the wash out...Blessings

All roads lead to prosecution for Mr Rove . . . he should avoid flying in small aircraft

  17. upside99 Says:

    Tank,

you are a funny person. It was a mis-speak, so are you saying that everything that Rove has said is mis-speak?

  18. robbez_92107 Says:

Besides, I thought after the AWOL W story, the LAST thing Dan Rather could claim was to be a "real journalist of great statue."

Get your talking points straight, Tanq, they're contradicting again.

  19. StratRat Says:

Someone cited 'Red Lasso' as a reputable news source? Really? What's next for these idiots, bathroom wall notations serving as poetry?

  20. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

First of all, Tanq, I was unaware that any statues of Dan Rather have been erected anywhere.

Not all "slips of the tongue" are Freudian in nature. I think one key difference is that when a liberal does it and says "Osama" instead of "Obama" (or gives the wrong entire name), he or she would feel bad about it afterwards. Conservatives would laugh and say it made no difference in what they were saying.

  25. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Yes, Keith H., but Mukasey has said he will refuse to enforce them. Mukasey needs to be impeached and removed from office. He broke his promise to my Senator, Chuck "Facetime" Schumer, that he would be independent of the WH. Instead, he has consulted with them and taken their position on everything.

Karl helped build a hypercompetitive, incompetent executive, the perfect expression of his pathological boss. Of course, neither will pay in this lifetime for their misdeeds. They have too much money and a free pass Congress.

This will have to hurt! Heh heh

  29. jjray7 Says:

Iglesias may be a man of more principle than the run of GOP operatives, especially compared to the hundred or so US Attys who were NOT fired for doiing the dirty work of their local GOP political bosses, Don Siegelman being a case in point.

But Iglesias isn't a liberal, or a progressive. He's a rarity, an apparent Puke with some integrity, but he's no friend.

It's a crime the way turd is thumbing his nose at congress. I see his fatass all over tv, spreading lies which are his stinkin opinions.

Let's say it could be possible for chimpy to excuse turd from testifying because of some security bs. Why on earth is chimpy passing national security secrets to turd, miers and the rest of the crooks? turd is chimpy's hatchman.

Ohio RICO Claim for Rove, US Chamber

Arnebeck told Mukasey he wants to “assert an Ohio Corrupt Practices Act/RICO claim against Mr. Karl Rover and others based upon their activities in 2000 to illegally use corporate treasury money and government power to establish single faction dominance in the United States, military dominance in the world and generally undermine the rule of law as it had developed over the course of the past century.

The letter to Mukasey, a copy of which was also sent to John Conyers, Jr., Chairman, US House Committee on the Judiciary, asks him to gather together Mr. Rove’s emails from the White House to the Justice Department, the FBI, and various governmental agencies, because they are relevant to the factual issues of the case.

“We are concerned about reports that Mr. Rove not only destroyed e-mails, but also took steps to destroy the hard drives from which they had been sent.” [Arnebeck letter to Muaksey]

Arnebeck’s letter to Kairis asks for the names of contributors and dates and amounts of corporate treasury contributions to the US Chamber’s Institute for Legal Reform that have been used in Ohio and elsewhere to influence state candidate elections for supreme court and attorney general. Arnebeck says he intends to assert an OCPA/RICO claim against them, in connection with their “continuing activities, in coordination with Mr. Rove’s strategy” to influence elections in Ohio and around the nation.

so it's ok for mcchimpy to go to Colombia? I hate repugs. No morals.

You know Sen. Obama will surpass anything the repugs have. He will be treated like the President of the United States. I bet other countries will have a lot of stories to tell about stupidass chimpy. HAHAHAHA

Can someone put some sperm on trud's blue dress so we can be done with him?

  40. republicanSScareme Says:

I think he's more likely not to testify to keep himself from being lynched.

  41. kassandrasduplex Says:

    So let's get this straight...
Iglesias has a new book out and the media are promoting it. And all the contempt charges on Earth and all the subpoenas won't change the fact that not one Bush crony will ever see the inside of a jail cell.
Innocent men, such as Don Siegelman will get jailed, and good men such as former Gov. Gray Davis will get destroyed by a corrupt corporate media and the Cheney energy cartel, etc. etc. but no one who is really guilty of corruption in this administration will ever pay for their crimes. But be sure and run out and get Igelsias' new book. Gotta keep the wheels of capitalism going.

  42. MapleStreet Says:

Uh, isn't flight to avoid prosecution considered a felony ?

Admittely, Rove hasn't been indicted yet, and I'm making a jump to think he'd worry about a little felony.

  43. scytherius Says:

What's really going to be fun is when Bush pardons everyone before he leaves office. However, they have never followed the law and I don't think we should either.

  44. Game of Life Says:

how many ways does turd have to say fu to congress before they understand fu?

Stop acting like the repugs are playing with a full deck of cards.

Believe me, turd is gonna slip because...ummm...because they do and don't give a f about the little person's blood, sweat and tears.

It's gonna be fun watching Sen. Obama's landslide.

But before that greatness, his Europe visit is gonna be amazing. HAHAHAHAHA I LOVE IT!

  45. kasinca Says:

They also stacked the deck at the Justice Department by putting a crook, Mukasey, who is refusing to allow any of the attempts to go to the grand jury. We can thank Schumer and Feinstein for that failure by them voting for this thug to be confirmed as AG. You would expect better after Alberto Gonzo pulled the same railroad of justice.

  46. The Shadow Says:

Yes, that bastard should go to jail, but there's only BIG problem. The WEAK Democrats are to afraid of him. The are playing a political game to run out the clock. I'll bet my life that Karl Rove never appears before this or any other committee as long as they play games with him. It's good to know that a congressinal subpeana means absolutely nothing these days. It's not work the paper it's printed on as long as those weak kneed cowards let Rove spit in their faces. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Linda Sanchez should be kicked out of office along with every one of those idiots on the judiciary committee including the chairman Mr. Conyers. They have let weak Nancy take away any power they ever had. Believe me my friends, if they locked Rove's azz up he's start singing like a bird. But that might force them to take action against Bush and Cheney. So they figure it's best to look the other way until John McCain becomes President.

  47. ForTruth Says:

It's because the whole entire political system is corrupt! Too many people have had their hands in the cookie jar, including too many Democrats.

Rove knows this good and well. He knows exactly what he can get away with.

  48. ForTruth Says:

Isn't there someone out there trying to impress Jodie Foster? She misses you.

  49. Blame Canada Says:

This is going to be great. The Democratic leadership is going to stick it to old turd blossom now.

I knew I couldn't type that with a straight face.

  50. Jess Wonderin Says:

There is the extreme long shot chance that Nancy P is VERY SMART and actually holding off charging ANY Republican until Bush is OUT - based on the fact that Bush can't pardon generally EVERYONE for EVERYTHING unless there has been a "chargeable action" to pardon.

THEN a strong Democratic Congress can "open investigations" for "alleged" felonies (there no time limit on crimes committed) without any fear that Bush will pull a "Scooter" (no pun intended) . . . . (UNLESS, Bush is a REAL genius and everyone signs "confessions" on January 17 and Bush pardons them ALL on the way to the swearing in a few days later . . . oh, the mind spins . . . ).

  51. Kay Says:

and this little piggy went to Gitmo...
