McCain Warns Of ‘Hard Struggle’ On The ‘Iraq-Pakistan Border’

Today on Good Morning America, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) refused to call the situation in Afghanistan “precarious and urgent,” but admitted that “We have a lot of work to do.” He warned of a “very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq-Pakistan border.” Watch it:

Of course, Iraq is nowhere near Pakistan. In fact, Baghdad — the capital of Iraq — is over 1,500 miles from Pakistan’s capital of Islamabad:

middle-east-map.gif

Before McCain repeats his claim to “know how to win wars,” he should probably look at a map.

Pakistan does have border problems, however: with Afghanistan, where al Qaeda and the Taliban have reconstituted themselves. A Center for American Progress report recommends establishing an inter-Pashtun political dialogue across the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan as a way of addressing the increasing threats.

How many more of these incredibly stupid gaffes is he going to have completely ignored by the Corwhorporate media?

He's UNQUALIFIED to be president, commander in chief, or anything more complex than burger chef.

  2. Paul W Says:

McCain has Iraq on the brain. He is so completely obsessed with "winning" in Iraq that nothing else matters.

  3. hussein toasterhead Says:

McCain's "gaffes" put him squarely in the majority of young Americans:

Only 37% of young Americans can find Iraq on a map—though U.S. troops have been there since 2003.
6 in 10 young Americans don't speak a foreign language fluently.
20% of young Americans think Sudan is in Asia. (It's the largest country in Africa.)
48% of young Americans believe the majority population in India is Muslim. (It's Hindu—by a landslide.)
Half of young Americans can't find New York on a map.

  4. tom Says:

McNumbNuts knows how to win wars . . . he just doesn't know where to fight them (kinda like GDumbya).

    It's Fantasy Land in John's mind, 24/7/365.

  6. Saint Augustine Says:

McSame reminds me of Tully Bascombe, Grand Fenwick's bumbling military leader in "The Mouse That Roared".

How's this for a McSame slogan?

If you don't know where you're going, it doesn't matter how you get there.

Is it because, after he nukes Iran, Iraq WILL border Pakistan?

    Iraqistan, yeah, that's the ticket!

  10. Badmoodman Says:

McCain: "My friends, as soon as I'm helped onto the intrawebs, I'll blog it out, go viral, surf (and boogeyboard) the ether, and finally will locate the war zone on the Google.

  11. tom Says:

McSame reminds me of Tully Bascombe, Grand Fenwick’s bumbling military leader in “The Mouse That Roared”.

The chief difference, of course, is that Tully was successful in the end.

There is no happy ending where McNumbNuts is concerned.

  13. misshusseinmolly Says:

Darn -- I already said this on another thread this morning, but I'll post it again:

I can see that all the maps and flashcards in the world aren’t going to help Johnny — he’s just irrevocably geography impaired.

On the other hand, he may have been talking about Iran. His idea of bombing Iran is so unpopular that he may have just started to refer to Iran as the “Iraq/Pakistan border” — a border that just happens to be very very very very very wide.

The sad thing is that the 23%ers will probably take Johnny's word as gospel and go hide under their beds because of this new border threat.

  14. Uncle Ho Says:

Once again, McIdiot demonstrates his unfitness for office.

  15. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Can you imagine if Obama made a gaffe like that? Just look at what they did when he said 57 "states" rather than 57 "primaries". They hammered on that for days. And yet McSame can make huge gaffe after huge gaffe and they are all ignored by the press. One reason why I would really like to have Tim Russert back is so someone can ask him "Ok, you said that the media would start covering McSame realistically....when will that be?"

  16. 5th Estate Says:

    McCain Hater...

Sorry to disillusion you but this site isn't called McCain-Haters and McCain is not it's primary focus.
Why don't you start your own McCain-Haters site as clearly you you've been hoping for one and I don't think this really suites your level of McCain Hate. Then you can really get your hate on--you stupid troll.

  17. shoeless Says:

The other day on Hardball, right-wing shill, Mike Barnicle, was discussing Barak Obama's trip with the other panelists. One of them said that if Obama made any mistles, like not knowing the difference between Sunni and Shia, his candidacy would be destroyed. Everyone had a good hearty laugh.

This one disgraceful exchange showed that the MSM is gleefully on board with the McCain campaign, and he will continue to be allowed to commit disturbing and outrageously stupid gaffes with no repercussions from the media.

Meanwhile, Barak Obama must be perfect between now and Nov. 3, because the news media is now openly committed to destroy him.

I love this website! I hate McCain and I have been looking for a McCain hating website. This is it! Keep the attacks going, we need to destroy this man.

"Hate" and "destroy" are very strong words to direct towards one man.
I don't think anyone here at TP who truly embraces open discourse embraces your sentiments.

  22. Badmoodman Says:

The other day on Hardball, right-wing shill, Mike Barnicle...

Oh, you bet. He's juuuuuust a bit to the left of Genghis Khan.

  23. tarazan Says:

McCain built all his campaign on one word called 'Surge'.
That's why he keeps saying.."Surge is working..we are succedding,we are succedding".
McCain measures success by the total number of American soldiers killed daily..but not by what the whole mission and the objective of this war is all about.
He said that himself " Americans care about the number of Americans killed...Wrong.
He said that if no Americans killed we can stay 100 years in Iraq."
Obama looks at the whole picture..Americans killed is important and part of the picture...but the whole picture is still not known to McCain, and that's what can we accomplish more by staying, and what's the end game, and what's the cost, not just in lives by continuing this war.
How do Iraqis and Iraq neighbors think about us prolonging this war, means nothing to McCain.
How much this will impact our relatiosnship with that part of Moslem world is too difficult for McCain to understand.
He thinks that he can achieve anything by using military.
He said that a week ago"I know how to win wars..".

America cannot afford a Napoleonic mentality like McCain in this current situation the country is going thru.

  24. kasinca Says:

Being an ignorant, senile, old man is good for the neo-conservatives...they had a chimpanzee to act as puppet the past eight years, McSame will fit well.

  25. citizen_pain Says:

Someone on another site made a good point about the media and McCain't: Yeah, the media is giving him a free ride, but are people being swayed by this? Sure, the polls show very close numbers in states where you'd expect McCain to be strong (see below the Mason-Dixon line), but if you look at the numbers of democratic voter turnout in the primaries vs. republican voter turnout, things don't look good for the GOP.

And in my opinion, McCain't is going to get his own ass nuked in the debates, on live network TV. The networks (because they're free of course) reach ten times the audience that all these cable pundit shows reach.

Look for McCain't to reveal himself as simply not fit to be president during the debates.

  30. 5th Estate Says:

    truther21...

    Yeah right! When asked

"Do you agree that the situation in Afghanistan in precarious and urgent?"

McCain doesn't expand his response to include Iraq, or Pakistan before talking about the "Iraq/Pakistan border" so he isn;t mixing his own words, and Sawyer doesn't mention them either, so he isn;t mixing her words either.

What;s happening at least is that he isn't thinking about the question presented and he's just connecting words in his head and speaking them.

A six-year old can be forgiven for such a mistake, not a potential President who better yet claims foreign policy expertise and who knows "how to win wars"---apparently without being able to read a map.

Go find a quote of Obama doing the same, and report back.

  31. spencers mom Says:

He said he "knows how to win wars" not that he "knows how to read maps". Give the man a break... he's so old, he still recalls Iran as Persia. Perhaps his globe is still flat.

    P.S.

Oh, I do smell "new troll" and it stinks!

But I wonder if the McCain campaign gives McCain Points(TM) for this kind of trolling?

Better check out the rules, McCain Hater, or you won't get your Big Mac this week.

    PEACE

  32. mary Says:

McCain Hater - you seem to have a lot of issues, the least of which is your pathetic need for attention, but perhaps a therapist can help you deal with all that hostility better than we can.

Most of us here do not want to see McCain "destroyed" but we certainly do want to see him lose the presidential campaign. But, then again, you knew that.

  33. JMOHR Says:

We need to determine how to appropriately raise the issue of McCain's mental fitness to be president. There are just too many gaffs not to indicate mental infirmity. It is not just the malapropisms or using the wrong words. It is the failure to keep basic facts of domestic and foreign policy in mind. The Iranians training Sunnis as a good example. It is the inability to respond to questions on key and obvious policy issues (viagra versus birth control as an example) or to remember prior voting on key issues. It is the prickly temper and over reaction to relevant questions concerning his positions or qualifications. It does not bode well for his performance as president and it must be discussed.

  34. Bluegene Says:

Not only do Republicans rewrite history now they are involved in redrawing national borders.

  35. citizen_pain Says:

  36. dasm Says:

  38. leftcoast Says:

    Well said.
I also would like to say that McSame might just get a pass on this one from me. But, it does add to his continued gaffes, and they are adding up.

  39. McWars Says:

Trajan, you've never been able to locate any contradictory material to copy-and-paste to your stalk site. You will not be able to magically do so by the provocation of esteemed posters, either, and today will be no different.

Looks like our old 'friend', mr. p is back amongst us.

  41. mary Says:

JMOHR - right on (as usual).

Perhaps a commercial that shows some of his "gaffes" and then says, "If McCain can't handle our foreign policy challenges, who would be the one making decisions?"

I'm sure somebody can come up with something a lot better but my point is that obviously McCain doesn't have the ability to handle the (cough, cough) finer details so who would be the one in the background making policy?

  42. scytherius Says:

It's sad that the only way you can be a Republican is to be stupid as hell.

  43. leftcoast Says:

McCain brings nothing but the old guard to his candidacy. And along with that an inability to quickly grasp and adequately respond to the least complicated discussion with even friendly reporters. This will be dangerous when meeting with world leaders.

  44. upside99 Says:

Well, being stupid and mis-speaking worked for the Repugs for the past 8 years. Maybe they have a better handle on the demographics of this country than those of us here.

  45. Buckie Boy Says:

McSame Hater is a troll who is trying to make Progressives look bad with his crap posts, ignore it and flag it...probably Trajan trying to get posts to put up on his reichwing trash site.

McSame is not qualified to be Pres.

  46. citizen_pain Says:

And as I said earlier McCain Hater, just wait until the debates. Sure, these flip-flops and gaffes, revelations of geographical ignorance are all being ignored by the press. But when he is on national network broadcast TV and there is an audience of millions watching him, there is no amount of spin or doting by the press that is going to save him.

He is simply outclassed by Obama in intelligence and being articulate and dignified.

If you think little Georgie Bu$h got agitated when he was outdone by Kerry in the debates, just ait to see how McCain't handles it.

I look to see his face turn as red as a steamed beet, and watch the gray matter spew out of his earholes as he spontaneously combusts, live, on stage.

  47. aceomalley7 Says:

  48. leftcoast Says:

MCCAIN: Of course not. I campaigned all over this country for him.

MCCAIN: "My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East,"

  49. shoeless Says:

Also, on Good Morning America, McCain said he would spend the next couple of days campaigning on the California-Hawaii border.

In Cape Girardeau, Mo., Obama showed off his knowledge of the war in Afghanistan by homing in on a lack of translators: “We only have a certain number of them, and if they are all in Iraq, then it’s harder for us to use them in Afghanistan.” The real reason it’s “harder for us to use them” in Afghanistan: Iraqis speak Arabic or Kurdish. The Afghanis speak Pashto, Farsi, or other non-Arabic languages.

    July 21st, 2008 at 12:04 pm
    ______

Please. The people we're actually looking for in Afghanistan and Pakistan - the Yemenis and Egyptians and Saudis of al-Qa'ida - speak Arabic as their first language. The others use Arabic as a lingua franca. Yes, we need Pashto and Persian translators for the PRT and development work we need to do in Afghanistan, but these are mostly local recruits.

And while we're picking nits, Afghanis are a currency. Afghans are a people.

The folks who support McCain are in love with the idea of a 'daddy state'. The 'daddy state' takes care of them, makes them feel safe, tells them what to do, where to go, what to think, how to act, who to like/dislike, etc...

It seems the political 'definitions' have changed where the right side - once thought of as brave, strong, resolute - are now the crybabbies. The dems - once thought of as less capable in matters such as foreign policy and the military - are now the leaders in drawing down the Iraq debacle, with Iraqi approval and cooperation.

Down the rabbit hole, for sure.

  69. 5th Estate Says:

truther21... thanks for the account courtesy of National Review.

McCain’s supposed to be the Iraq and Foreign expert, Obama the ‘carpetbagger’.

McCain has been to Iraq 8 times, but after his last visit couldn’t tell the difference between Sunni and Shia. I’ve never been there but I know the difference because I’ve bothered to learn something about Iraq.

McCain made the same mistake three times in two days, even after being corrected by Lieberman.

Comparing geographic identification mistakes when traveling to three locations or even three states in 24 or 26 hours for weeks on end and trying to keep track when trying to connect to an audience is bound to result in slip-ups.
McCain should be able to talk about Iraq accurately—especially in a one on one interview with Diane Sawyer in which a direct and simple question is asked.

Iraq has lasted five years and counting, costs over US $500 billion in direct costs and has cost over 4100 lives. John McCain wants to be in charge of all that, claims to be an expert on it all but can’t keep his facts organized.

The vast majority of Obama’s mistakes provided by the Nat. Review concern keeping campaign stops straight, not the biggest most expensive and deadly foreign policy issue that the next President has to cope-with and make decisions about.

In your world and the NR’s world it seems that all mistakes are equal. They are not.

  80. Marie Says:

    Jim Wilke,
You make a stupid comparison - Obama obviously misspoke as any fourth grader would know - when he said 57 states instead of 57 primaries.
However, most American could not find Iraq, Iran, Pakistan or Afghanistan on a map - and McCain is no better than they.
Except he thinks he is the man to be president.
You, JW, are a foolish repugnican.

  81. curious Says:

He did that indeed. What is worse is the person doing the interviewing did not correct him. I guess it wasn't her place to tell him and the audience there was no border.

After all we would not want to call him on his mistake. He is running for President and should not be held accountable for anything he says. No matter how stupid or wrong. Right?

Let's hear it for good manners that promote nothing. What is more important letting yet another mistake slide? How is this man ready to be President?

  82. Keith Says:

Obama graduated with honors from Harvard Law. McCain finished 894 out of 899 at Annapolis and never would have gotten into the school if not for who his father was (like our current president). Those were McCain's good years. I think senility is setting in now.
Obama made a gaffe by saying states when he meant primaries? They have made calendars of the hundreds and hundreds of stupid statements by our current president.

  83. Keith Says:

Some here think he meant the Iran-Pakistan border. I thought he meant the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. See the future problems? He orders an attack on Somalia.
