Aflac pulls ads from Savage’s radio show.
Responding to right wing radio host Michael Savage’s recent comments that autism is “a fraud” where “99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out,” insurance giant Aflac announced that it will no longer advertise on his nationally syndicated show:
“Aflac has a strong commitment to helping children through the Aflac Cancer Center and Aflac Foundation,” said a rep. “We understand that radio hosts pick on any number of targets however we found his recent comments about autistic children to be both inappropriate and insensitive.“
This isn’t the first time an advertiser had ditched Savage’s show. Nearly 20 companies pulled their ads after the Council on American-Islamic Relations launched a campaign last year urging radio listeners to express their concerns about Savage’s hate-fueled remarks. His program reaches nearly 8 million listeners each week.

One question I hear a lot is “why do advertisers run their ads on such a hateful program in the first place?”
These days, many advertisers don’t do their own shopping for advertising air time. They hire middlemen to do this — agencies who work with broadcasting companies who agree to place their ads where their desired demographic is the densest, and with the greatest audience they are willing to pay for. As a result of the process going through this many hands, the original advertiser seldom knows on what programs their ads are actually running (which is why you get so many denials from them — “we aren’t running ads on Savage’s show”).
As we found out when Coulter implied that John Edwards was a “f@g”, many advertisers will pull their ads off a controversial program or website. They certainly don’t want the hassle, especially since they can find other places to run them. Therefore, it’s important to find out what ads are running on shows like Savage’s, contact the company, and let them know what kind of cr@p their advertising dollars are supporting. Many will react by pulling their ads, which hits the propagandist where it hurts.

I do understand as I have worked with troubled teens and pre-teens. They are overcompensating for the years of being ignored and shunned by striking out with a vengence. It is them who slowly turn toward drugs and criminal behavior as a way to get the attention they needed, but never received.
It is sad, really. They are merely trying to force their views onto folks who are already smarter and more accomplished than they will ever be – so they get angry and defensive. That furthers the cycle for them, and moves forward the tactic of shouting, rather than speaking. They feel shouting makes up for the lack of substance in their arguements. Once they grow up, they will realize what fools they truly are.

The metro DC location of the school is one of the most diverse in the country, and has about 30,000 students enrolled. It contributes heavily to the technological sector of northern va.

I’m all for freedom of speech, but responsibility must enter into it– and in this case, Savage made incorrect, hateful comments about children and about the parents (fathers in particular) who care for them. Family values? It seems more that these right-wing radical pundits hate children & families, and the parents who strive so hard to provide a good life for their children. Child & parent-haters, that’s Savage & his ilk. Savage fits the description. If people (children, babies, parents, anyone) don’t fit the right-wing pundit description of “normal”- then they are garbage in their opinion. This isn’t Freedom of Speech. It’s hate, stupidity, publicity-seeking & ignorance. In this case, Savage really needs to be turfed out, for viciously attacking children and those who strive to make children’s lives better. We have an autistic child in our extended family, and I can tell you, they are not bluffing, and it is extremely difficult to deal with their upbringing 24 hours a day. Savage obviously has no understanding or intelligence on this issue. Can him. Or better– let him care for a few autistic children for a week. Then we would see some real honesty in his comments. I doubt he’d last an hour or two, at least without screaming insults at them, or beating them, according to his disgusting comments.

To clarify, and to be fair to other GMU students not associated with P, GMU is actually a good school with many degree offerings. The metro DC location of the school is one of the most diverse in the country, and has about 30,000 students enrolled. It contributes heavily to the technological sector of northern va.

I used to live in the DC area and know some GMU grads. But a while back our troll went off on a rant for weeks about how it was learning all this crap at the school. I know there are some conservative pockets in the main campus but it is wrong to paint ALL GMU folks with mr. p’s brush.
