NYT says ‘axis of evil’ term is dying… one day after White House endorses the phrase.

This week, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will meet her North Korean counterpart for the U.S.’s “first substantive high-level meeting” with the country since 2000. The New York Times writes that “the North Korea meeting may well amount to last rites for the ‘axis of evil,’ the one that President Bush said in 2002 was ‘arming to threaten the peace of the world.’” The White House, however, fully embraced the term just 24 hours earlier:

However, pressed by a reporter whether Bush still believed that they were part of the “axis of evil,” Perino said North Korea and Iran were still part of it.

I think that until they give up their nuclear weapons programs completely and verifiably, I think that we would keep them in the same category,” she said.

    _____

    Really.

The Washington Times has long been considered one of the most biased conservative newspapers in the country. So much so that when current Executive Editor John Solomon took the job in January, reporters were unsure whether he was “one of them” or whether he’d pass the paper’s “ideological litmus test.” Although under Solomon’s leadership the paper has made some changes to its style guide that have softened some of the bias, it’s still pretty darn conservative:

Solomon notes that he has taken on the internal Times mantra that “news is war.”

“In a war you have to take a side,” he says. “And journalists have to cover both sides of a war.”

Speaking of war, Solomon has engaged in virtually none of the ideological sort since taking over perhaps the most conservative daily in America. No mass desertions of journalists who wanted to write slanted copy. No rearguard efforts to save the legacy of former Executive Editor Wesley Pruden. No campaign to name the newsroom after Reagan.

Says Solomon: “The only point I have made with the reporters and editors who write for the news pages is there must be a bright line between opinion and editorializing that rightfully belongs on the op-ed and commentary pages and the fair, balanced, accurate, and precise reporting that must appear in the news sections of the paper.”

    Absolutely! Jinx!!

  26. upside99 says:

    Daryll,

So this is your ‘fair and balanced’ paper?

Both liberals and conservatives often refer to the Times as politically conservative. Some have cited it along with, most notably, the Fox News Channel and talk radio, as epitomizing conservative media bias.[8][11][12][13] The Times prints op-ed and opinion articles that include liberal and Democratic party voices; liberal columnist Clarence Page is a regular contributor.[14] Also featured are libertarian opinion pieces, almost always from scholars at the DC-located Cato Institute.[15][16]

According to the Columbia Journalism Review, “Because of its history of a seemingly ideological approach to the news, the paper has always faced questions about its credibility.”[17] Salon.com[18][19] and The Daily Howler[20][21][22][23] have published ‘anylyses’ of what they believe are serious factual errors and examples of bias in the paper’s news coverage. Conservative-turned-liberal writer David Brock, who worked for the Times’ sister publication Insight, said in his book Blinded by the Right that the news writers at the Times were encouraged and rewarded for giving news stories a conservative slant. In Right-Wing Media and How It Corrupts Democracy Brock wrote “the Washington Times was governed by a calculatedly unfair political bias and that its journalistic ethics were close to nil.”[24]

During the 1988 United States presidential election, the Times reported a false rumor about candidate Michael Dukakis’s mental health. [25]

In 2002, the Times published a story accusing the National Educational Association (NEA), the largest teachers’ union in the United States, of promoting teaching students that the policies of the United States government were partly to blame for the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.[26] This was denied by the NEA and by other commentators. [27][28]

And you say that the NYT is liberal? What about Kristol-meth and Rove and a few more of your he-roes that are regular contributors? Are they too ‘liberal’ for you?

You do have a wit, strange but still can be witty.

Daryll, I would guess that you have never found any case of anyone “demonizing left wingnuts” — simply because, in your twisted biased view, “left wingnuts” deserve to be demonized. Therefore, to you, it’s simply honest reporting.

By the way, YOU GUYS are “wingnuts”. We’re MOONBATS. Get your terminology straight.

    Jeez.

  31. shoeless says:

    dandbrew Says:
    Kay – under Clinton:

    Truth = Lies

“Let Saddam rebuild his regime” to the point that our troops rolled into Baghdad ahead of schedule, huh?

“Inflate economy under tech bubble”, huh? That “inflated economy went from a Dow at 3500 to 12,000, and the bursting of the tech bubble drew it all the way down to 10,5000. That “inflated economy” covered all of the expenses of teh federal government and then some, to the point that we could begin paying down the National Debt.

“”Truth=Lies”? Kind of like “any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires — a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we’re talking about chasing down terrorists, we’re talking about getting a court order before we do so.”?

Or “if there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is. And if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of.”

Well, maybe that last one isn’t a lie. Bush certainly took care of Scooter Libby, didn’t he?
