Savage defends his autism comments by claiming Media Matters hates ‘families and children.’»

Last week, Media Matters caught right-wing radio talker Michael Savage claiming that autism is a “fraud” and “a racket” where “99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.” Parents of autistic children are outraged, saying Savage’s comments were “way, way, way over the line and cruel.” But Savage refuses to apologize. On Larry King Live last night, he told guest host Glenn Beck that he had simply been “taken out of context” by “men who specialize in hating families and children, namely Media Matters.” Watch it:

Though Beck said he was sympathetic to someone being taken out of context, he told Savage that “as a dad with a child with special needs,” his baseless attack on autistic children “cuts right.”

Transcript:

BECK: It seems pretty clear you don’t really believe autism exists?

SAVAGE: No, no, no, no. Again, you took what they gave you but you didn’t take the entire preceding material. Preceding this, Glenn, was a discussion of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has had the nerve to say that children as young as two years of age should be given anti-cholesterol drugs.

BECK: Right.

SAVAGE: There’s been not one study about the damage this would do or potentially do to two year-olds, and yet you have had doctors come out and say these drugs should be given to the children. This was in the broader context of the over-medicalization, the over- diagnose of disease, using our children as profit centers. I’ve spent all day saying what a shame it is that I, as man who has spent his entire life defending the defenseless, mainly children, should have to defend myself from charges leveled at me by men who specialize in hating families and children, namely Media Matters who probably come after you as well, by ripping me out of context and making me look like the monster that they are.

BECK: Michael, let me ask you this, I am a guy who has been taken out of context. I am a guy who has been called a monster and everything else. I understand context. Talk radio is extremely difficult to do in sound bites because it is a three-hour running monologue, especially with somebody like you. But when you say 99 percent of the cases are brats who should be told to cut the act out and not act like morons, as a dad with a child with special needs, boy that cuts right.

UpdateThe radio station Super Talk Mississippi has announced that "effective immediately, Michael Savage and his Savage Nation Radio Show has been canceled." Here's the full statement:
Effective immediately, Michael Savage and his Savage Nation Radio Show has been canceled on all Super Talk Mississippi stations. Michael Savage's comments about Autistic children were beyond inexcusable and are unacceptable. Super Talk Mississippi and the Gallo Radio Show have assisted numerous Autism organizations on the air in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Autism is a serious condition affecting children and adults in Mississippi. We appreciate our many listeners who notified us of Savage's comments, especially those listeners who have autistic children. Steve Davenport, CEO Telesouth Communications, Inc.

Since I’m making it a point to completely ignore CNN lately, I wasn’t aware that Beck had Savage on as a guest. Talk about a match made in heaven…

It appears that Beck sponsors need a shit storm from parents as well.

This is a good reason why people like this should be “neutered” to stop the extreme stupidity that exists in Reichwingers.

  6. paleolib Says:

Not sure what context you can place remarks claiming that autism is a “fraud” and a “racket” and that 99% of autistic children are brats into that would come off as positive or even defensible.

  7. StratRat Says:

AFLAC has already pulled its advertising, and word is that one other very large advertiser is also dropping the Savage ‘Weiner’.

Is it a necessary part of the skill set for a right-wing hate-radio host that he be well versed in the strategy of projection?

‘Cause Savage Weiner is steeped in it.

You don’t have to be saddled with the hell of autism to do that. :)

  14. Mr. Evil Says:

I’d like to see just one example, JUST ONE, of Media Matters indicating that they hate families and children! C’mon trolls, post a link. Anything! I’ll wait patiently. Michael Savage is just that, a savage!

  15. misshusseinmolly Says:

Ah, the old “taken out of context” gambit. Another one of the last refuges for scoundrels.

You know, OTHER people manage to criticize unnecessary medication of children without dissing real conditions such as autism. You’d think Savage could do the same.

As much as I hate to say it, in a true “even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in awhile” moment, Beck is correct about the impact of Savage’s remarks. Furthermore, what “context” could Savage have possibly packaged these insane remarks in where they would sound rational?

And why does Savage accuse Media Matters of hating families and children because they criticized Savage’s loony comments, which were hateful to families and children? WTF?

  20. Freedom Rebel Says:

For someone in the unique position like Beck who has a special needs child that is advocating “brats who should be told to cut the act out and not act like morons” just shows his complete ignorance once again. It is this kind of backward thinking that does so much damage to children with disabilities and Autism.

Their hateful opinions are then ingrained into their children that bring it to school. Which causes these wonderful children and teenagers to get tormented.

It also perpetuates the myth that Autism is caused by bad parenting skills. Many of us that have older teenagers and adults have put up with that misguided and evil belief long enough.

Beck in the future if you can’t speak intelligently on a particular subject just STFU.

  21. Bob Says:

These ‘conservatives’ are just raging with compassion, aren’t they?

  22. McWars Says:

The reich has yet to explain how the left hates families and children, when the fundies and non-fundies alike are quick to throw their teenage daughter(s) to the street if she gets pregnant. “Well just have another kid and see if it ‘turns out right’, though we suck as parents.”

Never, ever consult a neonut on parenting skills.

  33. upside99 Says:

    Man of Action Says:

    upside99,
Get your talking points straight. Savage is anti-Bush. He was the 1st on the right that called out Bush for being a fake and a Globalist stooge. He hates rush Limballs and Sean Vannity. He bashes Bush better than any on the Left.

My main point was beck’s lack of courage to have someone on that would challenge him in any way. weiner-boy isn’t a challenge, just a dog turd dropping on the sidewalk.

And I wasn’t talking about weiner’s politics, I was talking about his asinine and hateful persona. He can’t have an intelligent dialogue, he just rants and spews acidic and inflammatory and racist comments.

Anyone that would listen to him would have to believe the same crap that he blows out of his arse.

  34. Mr. Evil Says:

Wow! Michael Savage bashes Bush and everyone in between all the way to autistic children. So this makes him acceptable? This makes him right or righteous? No, and HELL NO! It only makes him a self absorbed loonie that only loves to hear himself speak.

Now the trolls are trying to distract this by claiming that Weiner doesn’t like Bush! That’s the best they can do. They don’t even speak to the topic of this post - just throwing shiny objects in the way.

Since Bush seems mentally ill anyway, why not make fun of him?

  41. RantingTommy Says:

    boy of inaction,

Nationalism wins everytime!

That is how the right side operates with their brand name lying in the gutter. It is sad in that I believe the right side can do better, but they are devoted to the Weiners and Limbaughs of the world. Low Information Voters, to be sure.

    Got this from Radio Shack

Thank you for your email to RadioShack’s Media Relations Department. We appreciate and share your concerns.

We would like to emphatically state RadioShack was not and is not a sponsor of the Michael Savage radio show. In fact, our agreement with the radio stations airing his show specifically excludes his program (along with several others) as one on which our commercials may appear. Any ads that may have run on the July 16 broadcast of this show were in direct violation of our advertising contract with these radio stations. The stations have admitted their mistake to us and apologized for the confusion they have created. We will continue to investigate all local stations that air Michael Savage to ensure any unauthorized ads airing on Michael Savage are accounted for and that this does not happen again in the future

Unfortunately, the stations’ mistake was heard by many individuals such as you who have since spread the inaccurate message that RadioShack sponsors this program. Likewise, Web sites that were quick to post our name as a sponsor without investigating the actual facts have been very slow to correct the record online. Until that happens, we would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the correct facts through your own personal network.

Once again, thank you for writing and allowing us the opportunity to set the record straight.

    Sincerely,

    Charles Hodges

    Director Media Relations

dbadass - as far as media political biases, yes, it’s there. It is America. an eyebrow raised when NYT refuses to print essay from a republican. an even bigger eyebrow raised when someone wants to shut down a radio station.

Also, as for Savage making such a crazy statement - not cool.

as for which lean right/leaft? I’m not entirely sure, really I’m not. It does seem larger cities’ newspapers lean left, non-larger towns lean right.

Sources in the center? Hard to find, eh? I stick with the basics. cnn.com and has some leftish articles. The articles and pollls on their website lean left. Surprising, the poll currently on cnn.com:

Did The New York Times act appropriately in rejecting Sen. John McCain’s op-ed piece?
47% said no, 53% said yes.

I’d expected it to lean more on the “yes” side.

oh, and I frequent foxnews.com. Yes, they lean way right. I roll my eyes when they too pick on leftists too much.

Today is my first day checking out thinkprogress.org. wow, so far left it’s crazy!

  128. curious Says:

Media Matters does not hate families and children. When it comes to hate Savage is the prince of hate. For him to tar anyone with that brush is hypocrisy of the highest order.

It is said that Savage used to be a liberal before he got his show. I wouldn’t know about that. What I do know having heard him, is he is a disturbed individual. The hate simply boils out of him daily. Every day. I cannot understand how he can sustain such anger. And the more outrageous he is the more controversial he is, the more money he makes. His price goes up. And there will always be someone willing to hire this man. Clear Channel is the organization that put him on the air. These media conglomerates have almost no ethics. They do not provide a public service. They do not support intelligent discourse. They do not educate the public. And truth has nothing to do with the people they hire. It is money. Money and money. This is all they know or understand. They don’t provide a public service. They provide people with the lowest common denominator, hatred and prejudice.

I don’t believe in censorship. What I do believe is turning off the radio or television. Since the bottom line is money, if you stop listening he will be taken off the air.

  129. trollsbwild Says:

Media matters deserves our thanks. They serve a vital function where the majority of the fourth estate has failed miserably.
Savage is a despicable human being who has profited from hate mongering. I’m hoping that a change in DC by way of the GE will effect a change whereby Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, Beck, Ingram, Coulter, et. al. experience a downturn in support. What could be better than Clear Channel and similar media outlets suffering financially for enabling this culture of hate as a form of payback.

Regardless of his statements….he needs to be educated on the signs and treatments of Autism.

His office should be flooded with information on the topic in order to inform him and next be FIRED!

Since the rise of diagnosis’s of children are rising… maybe he should think about “WHY IS THAT”? There is not just one simple answer or solution to the rise of diagnosed children/adults…

    He is just ignorant!

  134. judyinnm Says:

What does that mean, “cuts right”?

  135. ralph the wonder llama Says:

pmav,my nephew is autistic, pretty high-functioning, but textbook autistic. My sister-in-law had to fight tooth and nail to get the services that the California Public School System offered to its handicapped students. And believe me, it wasn’t because the system was flooded with misdiagnosed autistic kids.

He graduated high school and is struggling through college, but he will never be able to function normally in society. His career options are severely limited by his condition and his social skills are practically nonexistent. (By the way, he’s a staunch right-winger now. Something about the ideology appeals to his lack of empathy and distaste for nuance.)

So i have to say I find your defense of Savage absurd and I’ll match your anecdote with my own.

As for Savage Weiner being “taken out of context”, how much context is required? Media Matters publishes extended transcripts for all their stories, and accompanies them with video and audio recordings when applicable.

Please share with us what that missing context would supply that would make Savage Weiner’s diagnosis that “99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.” sound less hateful than the actual words convey?

  136. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    pmavrk Says:
    ralph the wonder llama –

Absurd? Perhaps you would like ot join me at the next IEP meeting for my child.

No need. As I pointed out, I have personal experience with this issue already.

I cannot speak to your sister inlaws experience but all districts within the state are very different. My district is very liberal with labels and will happily label your sister inlaw’s child. Your sister inlaw’s district sounds much tougher. Hey, if she needs more services, come to my district.

You don’t read very closely, do you?

Defending Savage? Yes, I will always defend people who are falsly accused by hateful left wing entities like media matters and this board. The very sad thing is, most of the folks on this board do not even know anyone with Autism. But they are happy to jump on the bandwagon to bash Savage. Its teh mob mentality.

I listened to the entire show. The quotes that you pasted are OUT OF CONTEXT. Do you understand what OUT OF CONTEXT MEANS Ralph? He was saying that 99 percent of the cases that were MISDIAGNOSED, was a brat who needed disipline.

I think I understand what OUT OF CONTEXT means, but I’m not sure if it means the same thing to you. That’s why i asked for clarification from you. I can’t tell if you ignored my question of how much context is sufficient, or if you think you answered it with “I listened to the entire show”.

If that’s the case, then you seem to be trying to tell me that this isn’t enough context:

Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I’m not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket. For a long while, we were hearing that every minority child had asthma. Why did they sudden — why was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I’ll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], “When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], ‘I don’t know, the dust got me.’ ” See, everyone had asthma from the minority community. That was number one.

Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.

What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, “Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.”

Autism — everybody has an illness. If I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, “Don’t behave like a fool.” The worst thing he said — “Don’t behave like a fool. Don’t be anybody’s dummy. Don’t sound like an idiot. Don’t act like a girl. Don’t cry.” That’s what I was raised with. That’s what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You’re turning your son into a girl, and you’re turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That’s why we have the politicians we have.

Now, that seems to me like a lot of context. And nowhere in there do I read any kind of qualifiers like you suggest. Can you find some of the context you say we’re missing and post it here?

Because four complete paragraphs seems to me like it ought to be enough context to accurately gauge the tone, the mood and the intent of the speaker. Especially this speaker, who is so prone to excess, not so famous for nuance. .

Thanks. I look forward to your response.

  137. Zooey Says:

pmavrk would happily deny all children with disabilities proper funding — if he didn’t have a disabled child.

Even if a child is misdiagnosed, it doesn’t mean he’s a brat who needs better discipline. Savage wasn’t taken out of context — he said exactly what he meant. That’s why he won’t apologize — not that I’d accept it (as the parent of a son with autism).

Autism is a developmental disability, and for some reason DD gets higher funding than other diagnoses. Yeah, the school district gets more money for DD kids, but if you’re a knowledgeable parent who doesn’t let them railroad you, they will be spending every dime they get for your child — on your child.

Racket indeed — Savage & pmavrk can go f uck themselves.

  138. Keith Says:

pmavrk says: Do you understand what OUT OF CONTEXT MEANS Ralph? He was saying that 99 percent of the cases that were MISDIAGNOSED, was a brat who needed disipline.

I saw Savage with Beck and the two doctors on CNN Monday night. They kept asking him about the 99% comment. He had plenty of chances to respond. He never said what you say he meant.

Someone go tell Dan Marino and Doug Flutie they have poor parenting skills.

  139. Robt Says:

Has anyone at all seriously considered Savage is suffering from being abducted by aliens too many times.?

Each time having that alien probe thrusted into you like that might have an enormous influence on his masculinity and sanity which is why Savage acts like he does.

He shows classic signs of definate alien abduction.

If you don’t believe me, ask Mulder and Scully to show you the X Files on Savage.

  140. Keith Says:

You’re welcome Zooey. You’re welcome Zooey’s son. Tweren’t nothing. Made me feel better afterwards. Can’t call any local stations that have Savage cause there aren’t any.

  141. valkyrieschains Says:

I too am the parent of an autistic child. Savage is a sad, strange little man. My biggest problem with his comments is that there is just enough of a sprinkling of truth in what he says. Because autism is the disease du jour for children, it takes no effort whatsoever to get a diagnosis of “mild aspergers” from a pediatrician. I have seen parents use it to get services, to get money, free lunches from the school, you name it; and there really IS nothing wrong with the kid other than a hovering parent with a “mild form of munchausens by proxy”. These parents give some credence to jerks like Savage and make it harder for those of us who really deal with autism day in and day out to get what we need for our children. When Savage lives with a wordless 14 year old who is still in diapers, then he can talk to me about how I can get my kid to cut it out.

  142. valkyrieschains Says:

I haven’t heard anyone say he doesn’t have the right to sound like an idiot or not know what he’s talking about. As for being left wing, while I am certainly not right wing, I am definitely to the right side of moderate.
I listen to Savage. I heard the show, in its entirety, from beginning to end, so perhaps you need to make sure you know what you’re talking about before you start flinging left wing and First Amendment around.
His fans and followers would love everyone to say he’s been taken out of context for the last three shows, but the fact remains that it just isn’t true. That is stated by people who hope against hope that no one reading listens to him. I didn’t disagree with what some of what he said about autism. He exaggerated, spoke about things of which he knows nothing, got called on it and refused to back down. Why? Because even negative publicity is good publicity. It really is just that simple. He’s done it a lot, he just doesn’t usually choose such a topic that crosses every social and economic barrier we have.

  143. ckiernan Says:

I am a teacher who spends six hours a day, seven days a week in a classroom for children with severe autism from K to grade 5. This savage guy is a moron. These children that I work with are beautiful and loving, and severely impaired. Most of them can barely speak, some of them have severe aggressive episodes every day. Some of them engage in self injurious behavior. And all of them are severely mentally retarded, and have a very hard time learning. But, they all do learn, and they come everyday and try their best, and they all have more integrity and character than that bastard ever will. How ignorant.
