Fox and Friends tackles sexism: ‘Hey, honey! Get me a sandwich!’

This morning on Fox and Friends, the three hosts began a discussion about sexism and whether it still exists. Brian Kilmeade concluded, “I don’t see it.” As proof, he said, “I look at women and say, ‘Hey! Hey equal!’” Steve Doocy then joked that he says to women, “Hey, honey! Get me a sandwich!” Gretchen Carlson was clearly uncomfortable throughout the segment, repeatedly trying to shift the discussion to Hurricane Dolly. The two men, however, decided to talk about the problems with women’s sports, concluding that Carlson needs to get more of her “people” to watch the WNBA. Watch it:

Transcript:

DOOCY: Do you think sexism, in traditional television news viewing in the evening, has eroded significantly?

KILMEADE: Have we beat sexism though? I think we’re all equal. I think men and women are equal. Do you?

CARLSON: No.

DOOCY: All you have to do is look at the empirical facts that women are paid less for the same job. So we’re making a lot of headway. But for her to say that she’s a victim of sexism and Barack Obama not a victim of racism. This is something different.

CARLSON: It’s too multi-faceted to have it be only just one thing. You cannot deduce from that that sexism still does not exist.

KILMEADE: I don’t see it. I look at women and say, “Hey! Hey equal!”

DOOCY: No, what you say is, “Hey, honey! Get me a sandwich!”

KILMEADE: No, I don’t say, “Honey, get me a sandwich!”

DOOCY: I do! Sweetie!

CARLSON: This is a slippery slope. So I think we should just end the discussion and move on to something else.

KILMEADE: Are you looking at the WNBA/NBA ratings? The problem with women’s sports is that women don’t watch.

DOOCY: It’s not as interesting.

KILMEADE: Women’s sports isn’t as interesting?

DOOCY: I don’t think the WNBA is as interesting as, for instance, college basketball. I like that a lot better.

KILMEADE: Women’s college basketball.

DOOCY: Yeah.

CARLSON: As a woman, I enjoy watching sports.

KILMEADE: You’ve got to get more of your people to watch sports.

DOOCY: Yeah, your people! Get your people!

CARLSON: Let’s move on to the hurricane —

DOOCY: We are married to some of her people.

KILMEADE: That’s why we have such –

CARLSON: Thanks for the reminder for when Brian goes home today — this afternoon. At some point. Okay, let’s get back to the hurricane.

    And this is newsworthy how?

Shame on you TP. You have wasted time and space documenting the kind of mindless BS that occurs daily on FoxSnooze and Friends. That’s what happens when you have three bimbos on-set.

Now, how about something that will have impact upon our nation and our lives.

    May I suggest –> http://tiny.cc/PhA7N

Some might thing that the entire purpose behind a website dedicated to progressive causes might have some vested interest in a national ‘news’ network continuing to promote a sexist agenda… but that’s just me.

As for the link that Tom so generously has provided on different threads…. I think that John Edwards having an affair with Batboy hardly qualifies as news…..

A male saying they don’t see sexism is the same as a white saying they don’t see racism.

  10. unbelievable says:

A man is no more an expert on what it’s like to be a woman than a white is on what it’s like to be black, or straight on gay, or rich on poor.

    These people are pathetic.

What? How is it making headway for women to be paid less?

Actually, under the Bush Regime, women have LOST ground in this arena. Women make less now than when Bush entered office. Definitely NOT making headway.

    Idiots.

  16. unbelievable says:

tom Says: And this is newsworthy how?

Because as long as these people have influence on the public, we will continue to see the erosion of our country. It’s an across the board statistic that countries that treat women as equals to men have higher standards of living than those that do not. In the U.S. we do not. If we want to solve our crime and health issues, we first have to fix the underlying cause – discrimination aganst women.

  17. Abu Ben Hussein Leporello says:

I’ve quoted Tom Clancey on this before, and I’ll quote him again. “The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.” How do maroons like this get away with it? Stupidity is one thing, but Faux, once again, takes it to a Whole new dimension. I never thought I’d say this, but for once, I actually feel sorry for Gretchen.
Impeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

  18. tom says:

Zooey, it looks like we have an honest disagreement here. Sorry, but I really don’t think that something that is a regular daily occurrence on FoxSnooze and Friends is very newsworthy. That’s the “shame on you” message in my earlier post. Really. Who cares? If this is what you are disagreeing with me about, let me know.

On the other hand, if you are “shaming on me” for raising the Edwards story, please understand that my purpose in doing so is to (1) make others aware that this story will get legs today and we’ll all be hearing about it and (2) it will have impact in terms of Obama’s VP selection and very possibly keep Edwards out of the AG slot.

Edwards will be getting beat up about this, I am sure. I am not gloating about it or “trolling”.

  19. 5th Estate says:

KILMEADE: “I look at women and say, “Hey! Hey equal!”

I do that TOO! I’m immune to MACE now!

  20. 5th Estate says:

I suggest you research this story for more plausible evidence at least, and report back when you have something that offers convincing corroboration or refutation.

It’s the National Enquirer, for god’s sake. It’s trash. It’s gossip.

Please don’t pull the “it’s for your own good” routine. The Obama team is not made up of idiots. Edwards (or anyone else) will be fully vetted for any position in his administration, so if this story has any basis in fact — they already know about it.

  22. misshusseinmolly says:

So this is what it boils down to — sexism has now become fodder for sophomoric jokes. Sexism is something we’ve “beaten” because MEN say so. And the biggest thing about sexism is the lack of parity between men’s and women’s sports, just because these clowns say so.

Somehow, I imagine that if the subject had been racism, and if the panel consisted of two white people yukking it up and one black person who looked uncomfortable, the offensiveness of this entire discussion would be more readily apparent to all. So why is it OK to treat sexism as funny and trivial?

I would be interested to know the salaries of Doocy, Kilmeade, and Carlson.

  23. McWars says:

First, what is all this talk about Edwards?

Second, Gretchen must be second guessing her career decision after that segment.

Third, I get tired of the notion that everything can be dynamically changing for angry white men, but all must remain “traditional” for women and minorites.

It’s always nice to hear about the depths of the sickness at Faux. However, I can’t spare much outrage the day after Katie Couric/CBS got busted creatively editing a McPander Bear interview which, if unedited, would make him look like an utter fool.

How many times have CBS and other networks pulled the same stunt? Will the “swift boat veterans” soon be editing news copy? How long until the MSM gets tired of quoting out of context and moves to pure fabrication? Will the average viewer ever be told the truth about anything?

He’s a Black Nationalists that wants empowerment for his people. I respect him for that. You guys know nothing about Nas, so stop dick ridding the man. Trahan, it’s apparent that you know nothing BUT hip hop, but I’m sure that works out for you in your job as a busboy at the local burger joint.

Oh no, now you’re going to send one of your Latin King boyfriends to beat me up. I’m a-skeered now!

NAS? As in the National Academy of Science? Because they did a study in which they found:

‘Women in science and engineering are hindered not by lack of ability but by bias and “outmoded institutional structures” in academia, an expert panel reported today.’

  41. tom says:

    Zooey (and others) –

Apparently, you do not recall my other numerous posts on TP threads so that you can put my Edwards comments in context. I am anything but a “concern troll” or someone who would quote the National Enquirer as an authoritative source.

I am really rather disappointed in the fact that you want to “kill the messenger” rather than deal with the message. As to “gathering facts” and/or refutation, etc., that’s irrelevant at this point. The story is the story. What I am saying is that this will likely get bigger as the days wear on. I suspect that the Enquirer has pictures of Edwards in what it has described as a compromising situation. If so, they wouldn’t put them on their website — they are saving them for their next print edition so they can sell their yellow pulp paper.

There are Democrats who are not immune to criticism and scandal, you know. It is really unfortunate if we cannot have a civil conversation about this.

    Peace out.

  52. mary says:

Hello dbadass – can you hear me? It’s getting awfully loud in here!

I don’t have anything handy right now but my understanding is that women’s gains in that regard have been steadily eroding. Enrollment is down, representation is down in academia and the workforce.

Sorry misshusseinmolly, but I have a personal policy against flagging but I definately see your point and encourage others to follow your lead.

  71. Hug The Moon says:

Reminds me of the KKK leader who turned against his supremist brethren. It was after a colleague said that once the war against skin color was over, then they would move to eye color. This grizzled high-ranking officer of the KKK woke up over this.

What happened on this Fox program seems like a similar situation. At the core, many of these people have the sad anxieties that they try to make light of. Try to find comfort in those with the same phobias and empathetic deficits.

    Hope this woman wakes up.

  72. dbadass says:

What the hell are you talking about. This thread has everything to do with Fox News. Might want to scroll up and check

  73. dbadass says:

Oh that must be it. So Triplekick2. Might I inquiry as to why you hang here? It seems you have a beef with the place. I don’t have access to tv much so I really don’t pay much attention to Katie or Fox. I can say that when I have seen Fox News it has been way messed up but since I have never seen Ms. Couric, I really couldn’t comment

So now TrippleKick is defending sexism? Exactly what can the right side do which would finally piss him off? Exactly how low does the country have to go before TK sees the consequenses? I guess for TK the only people left to approve of are tall, white GOP men – no others.

  76. JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin says:

Sure, this is sexism, but Gretchen takes it and allows it to happen. She should have told them to screw off.

Women need to tell men to stop treating them like garbage and mean it if they want stuff like this to end.

They are such pigs, and it shows how the conservatives think of women, second class citizens and just play things…knuckle-draggers, all of them.

Your comprehension skills could use improvement.

Nope. We’ve all got your number pal.

You have an affinity for tall, white, GOP manly men. You have made that crystal clear throughout your postings here. Don’t deny it, there is nothing wrong with your ‘feelings’, as I am sure your folks always told you that you were ’special’, not different. Don’t hide from your destiny – you would only be lying to yourself, such as Larry Craig.

BTW, there would be no way I could do my day job without an exceptional grasp of reading comprehension. It’s sort of a requirement in my line of work.
