The number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits rose last week “to the highest level in almost four months.” The number of workers filing new claims for jobless benefits jumped 34,000 last week to 406,000. The filings exceeded economists’ forecast and were the most since the week that ended March 29.
“The filings exceeded economists’ forecast”
July 24th, 2008 at 9:58 amThere may be some economists out of jobs soon also.
What about the rest of us?
I’ve been ‘jobless’ for 16 months – had to cash out my 401K to stay alive…..
People like me aren’t even included in those figures
July 24th, 2008 at 10:01 amAmerica’s pulse has weakened & become erratic.
Truth is nearly impossible to find, & the media is complicit in the cover-up.
Jobless claims have long been news the Feds don’t want to hear.
For example, a person out of work for more than 6 months is now considered to be not a part of the statistics. In other words, if you’re out of work long enough, you’re out of the jobless ‘count’.
Does this make sense to anyone? If true numbers were used to calculate joblessness, we’d see unemployment above 10%.
Doublespeak is the primary Bush language; English is second.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:02 amObviously, these 406,000 need psychological help. They’re not “really” out of work afterall.
Slightly OT…McCain is crediting Bush for the drop in oil prices…apparently the psychological boost acheived by lifting the executive ban on off-shore drilling was all the world needed to stop worrying about supply. Thank goodness we won’t really have to actually drill…
July 24th, 2008 at 10:04 amThanks so much for the statistics
July 24th, 2008 at 10:10 amThe whiners need to understand it’s just a hangover
July 24th, 2008 at 10:11 amHow long will it be before some McPutz suppporter proclaim that the unemployed are a bunch of ‘whiners’? Or that these people are better off now than 4 years ago? What are the complaining about?-They’ve never had it so good, what with all that paid vacation.

July 24th, 2008 at 10:15 amThese people deserve to be out of jobs. This is the United States, the most advance and prosperous nation in the world. There are jobs for any one who is willing to work. Obviously, these people are just losers. Next you are going to want to give them unemployment benefits, medical care and food. They are obviously morally inferior or they would have jobs. Make them homeless and let them die in the streets.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:16 amJMOHR, you’re snarktastic this morning!
July 24th, 2008 at 10:23 amThey obviously aren’t working hard enough, or don’t love the baby Jesus properly.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:24 amSince this is just a mental recession, aren’t these people just “mentally” out of work?
July 24th, 2008 at 10:29 amWhich is causing: “As many as 1.6 million cars and trucks may be repossessed nationally this year, the most in at least a decade, according to the Manheim wholesale vehicle auction service.”
George the stimulis checks didn’t work..

Oh, but don’t you see? This creates jobs! All these unemployed people can get jobs repossessing cars! Of course, most of them would just be repossessing their own…
/snark off
July 24th, 2008 at 10:35 amSomewhat related:
Ford Motor Co. is now espousing the effort to build smaller, more efficient vehicles…Duh!
Meanwhile, here in MN, they are shutting down the Ford Ranger assembly plant. The Ranger is their only pickup getting above 24mpg!
Corporate Intelligence is now officially extinct.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:39 amBut this is just psychological — it’s all in their heads — so say McCain, Gramm and Bush.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:42 amPeople are draining their savings, tapping into retirement accounts, mortgaging their homes, but they only need to look on the bright side — Bush suggests they go shopping, Gramm says they should see a shrink, and McCain says if we bomb Iran, they’ll forget their troubles.

Damn whiners!

So sorry to hear that.
And the MSM pretends that unemployment is only 5.5%. We know it isn’t.
Capitalism isn’t working!
July 24th, 2008 at 10:48 amCome to Ohio, we have lost so many manufacturing jobs, and loosing those starts the trickle down. The economy is in the tank! Oooops! There I go whining again.

I’m from Ohio also, did you see the latest report that Cleveland has a 10% unemployment rate now. I knew it was bad here but that hurts.
July 24th, 2008 at 11:32 amIt’s what happens in CRISIS! Hear that, Neocons? IT’S A CRISIS!!!
July 24th, 2008 at 12:01 pmFreedom Rebel, I live in Dayton, a big GM town. We are loosing the truck and bus plant, and when that happens then all the little “feeder plants” that supply parts will lay off, and then folks can’t go out to eat, or get their dry cleaning done,or buy cars, or clothing, and many others suffer. Sigh, I know I don’t have to tell you this, you all ready know.
July 24th, 2008 at 12:16 pmIts all psychological! No job, rising costs, losing your house? Of course your’e going crazy and getting depressed!
The real problem is, you aren’t managing your expectations!
Who stole your cheese? That’s not important! Change is good! Enough change to buy a donut is even better!
My advice? Whine less! Otherwise you’ll get an ulcer or a heart attack, and you know you can’t afford that!
Let US manage your expectations for you!
This has been a soothing PSA from the Ministry Of Truth.

July 24th, 2008 at 12:22 pmFreedomRebel…
Oh the irony. I left the UK when unemployment was 12%. Now I can’t afford to go back there ( though they are having problems too, having tied themselves a bit too closely to certain US economic models).
July 24th, 2008 at 12:25 pmI’m originally from Michigan, near the Detroit area. I know a thing or two about joblessness.

I feel bad 5th Estate, you must be homesick. My grandparents were from Scotland, grandmother came over when she was nine and my grandfather when he was 21. There was never a day go by that they didn’t miss the heather and the landscape. The upside though they had to get the men out of the mines, that is why they both came to the US.
Good to see you 5th Estate :)

I’m in a suburb of Akron, and like Columbus we have the lowest unemployment in the state, so far knock on wood. But the surrounding communities like you are getting hit bad. Canton lost the Hoover plants, and most of Timken Research, that was devastating. Good paying jobs like what you are taking about at the GM plants. We have Chrysler in Twinsburg, Ford in Northfield and Lordstown has a GM plant. The first two plants are only about 25 minutes from me the Lordstown plant is closer to an hour, all three had massives layoffs. I know what you mean, so many small businesses went under because of it.
Have a good day larkohio :)
July 24th, 2008 at 1:01 pmThe unemployment claims jumped up because of the 13 week extension that just passed into law. Those who were on unemployment last year and are still unemployed now are entitled to the 13 week extension, but they have to file a new claim to get it. (I know this because I filed again this last Tuesday.)
July 24th, 2008 at 1:17 pmThanks, Freedom Rebel, you have a good day as well.
