Rep. Doyle: ‘If Mr. Savage wants to find someone acting like a moron, he should simply look in the mirror.’»

Last week, right wing radio host Michael Savage claimed that autism is “a fraud” where “99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.” This morning on the House floor, Rep. Mike Doyle (D-PA) responded to Savage’s comments. Watch it:

Having read the entire transcripts of both the original broadcast and Weiner’s subsequent refusal to retract, and justification for, his statements, nothing was taken out of context.

But even if the offending quotes had been extracted from the full context, please explain the context under which these statements would be acceptable, especially to the families of these children.

  20. ChenZhen Says:

    pmavrk-

I’m not buying it. Let’s look at the statement from Mr. Savage’s Network on the issue:

Promptly after the Network’s management learned of the comments in issue, the Network commenced an investigation into the particulars and the circumstances of those comments. This investigation began with the Network’s CEO, Mark Masters, personally contacting Dr. Savage to address the concerns and obtain an explanation of the comments directly from Dr. Savage.

In that conversation, and other subsequent conversations between Mr. Masters and Dr. Savage, Dr. Savage explained the circumstances and intent of his statements in considerable detail. The Network also carefully monitored subsequent broadcasts of the Show, on Monday, July 21st and Tuesday, July 22nd, which were devoted to the subject of autism and further explanations by Dr. Savage of his views on the subject.

Dr. Savage has clarified that his July 16th statements concerning autism were not directed at those who are in fact challenged by this horrible affliction, but were instead addressing efforts to broaden the concept of autism beyond those who truly are autistic to a broader “autistic spectrum” of behavioral symptoms which are also manifested by persons who do not suffer from autism, and his concern that many children are being misdiagnosed as autistic due to the subjective nature of autism diagnosis (due to the lack of known biomedical indicators, such as blood tests, to definitively confirm or deny the actual existence of autism). Dr. Savage has also explained his belief that there have been efforts by certain professionals and professional organizations to expand diagnoses of autism more broadly, for various reasons, and his concern that this victimizes and stigmatizes children who are misdiagnosed as autistic. On multiple other occasions Dr. Savage has expressed his concerns that other conditions, such as ADD and ADHD, are overdiagnosed and result in improper medication of young children, which Dr. Savage regards as abusive.

In the context of his broader concerns, it is clear that Dr. Savage’s comments were intended to suggest his opinion that, in the vast majority of cases, most children throwing tantrums, or refusing to communicate, are not autistic. Unfortunately, by condensing his multifaceted concerns into 84 seconds of commentary, the necessary context for his remarks was not apparent, and the few words he used to express his concerns were, in this instance, inartfully phrased.

As a result, Dr. Savage’s comments did facially appear to be directed at children who suffer from autism, and clearly could be perceived as such. This has, in turn, caused understandable pain and distress to those who have a child or family member who is challenged by autism. This was not Dr. Savage’s intent, and, on behalf of the Network and all persons associated with the Network, we wish to note that our hearts go out to all families who are forced to face the realities of autism every day of their lives, and to sincerely apologize to these families for any increase in these burdens resulting from inartful commentary appearing in the Network’s programming.

While the phrasing of Dr. Savage’s remarks was inartful, after the aforementioned investigation, as well as personal knowledge of Dr. Savage’s strongly held views towards children and those dealing with special challenges, the Network is satisfied that he did not mean any disrespect to autistic children or their families but was instead reiterating his longstanding concerns on public health issues. Indeed, on these points, Mark Masters, the Network’s CEO, notes that:

“I have known Michael Savage for nine years now. Over those nine years, we have had occasion to disagree on many issues. However, I have always respected Michael as a man of conviction, and I have noticed throughout our relationship that he has always been passionate and intense in his opposition to persons who he perceived to be disrespectful of persons dealing with special challenges.

In other words, he really did lash out at autistic children, but the “Network” got his “word” that he really meant no ill, and closely “monitored” (i.e. required Savage to dedicate an entire broadcast or two to “clarify”; broadcasts that were repeated as late as last night as “encore” editions).

But, lets assume you’re right, and more context is required. Even so, I’d say that the very fact that his own network had to release a statement that included the line “Dr. Savage’s comments did facially appear to be directed at children who suffer from autism, and clearly could be perceived as such“, and he now has to spend hours going over it and have a whole autism PR campaign on his website…still makes him look like a MORON, and deserving of Doyle’s jab here.

I don’t actually need to listen to the show because I can read. That means I can read the actual transcript. Are you going to pretend that the transcript isn’t accurate? They misquoted him? Or are you just desperately trying to frame some kind of “context” that will magically make all those many many words change their meaning.

Savage is a vile, repellent and probably seriously mentally ill person. Whenever Media Matters posts nice long transcripts of his hate-filled broadcasts, he whines and whimpers about being taken out of context and shrieks about how everyone at MM is a big homo. He’s operating at the level of a 12 year old, and not a very bright or conscious 12 year old at that.

  25. ChenZhen Says:

    pmavrk-

I challenge you libs to actually listen to Savage’s show tomorrow. Heck, if media matters is soo concerned with the truth, then they no doubt posted this weeks shows as well. RIGHT???

Anyone can backtrack and spin, especially when it means keeping one’s job. I listened to the show last night. He spent hours defending it and making Media Matters out to be the “devil” (yes, he used that pejorative). My point is, context or no, what he said was pretty damn stupid, since you can certainly make the point without saying “In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”

Face it, he got caught saying something completely asinine, and now he’s on a PR blitz of deflection and damage control. So, of course his subsequent shows are going to be aimed at making him look like he’s some champion of autistic children. But it doesn’t change the fact that he’s a moron for saying it in the first place.

Sooo, it’s up to each listener to conduct a thorough investigation whenever Savage puts his foot in his mouth…just like the vested management had to do after admitting and downplaying the comments as “inartful”-meaning asinine.

Your problem, pmavrk, is failing to remember when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

Nicely done. Since you can no longer avoid admitting that Savage said just what Media Matters reported that he said, you try to distract people with irrelevant pap about the people who have criticized him. And Obama, who isn’t even in the country.

Give it up. Savage is a pig.

  30. curious Says:

Believe it or not, this rant of Michael Savage is one of his least offensive. He daily spews out hate in an alarming way. And he was hired to do this.

These talking heads get paid to serve up hatred and controversy daily. And let’s not forget just who listens to them. People who have deep dislikes and predjudices of their own. This is the base of talkers like Savage, Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity and the rest. They appeal to the lowest base in all of us. These idiots like Savage speak for them. In speaking for them they give a kind of legitimacy for those hatreds. People think they are understood by these talkers. It says to them that no matter how much they resent others for whatever reason, it must be ok. Because Savage or whoever agrees with me.

They don’t know that these talkers that speak to them and for them, also hold them in contempt. And they laugh all the way to the bank. Savage may get fired, he has been fired before. But it won’t matter. Some other contemptible media source will hire him. And the hypocrisy goes on. In fact I would bet money that if he is fired and re-hired elsewhere, it will be for more money.

After having said all that, one thing is right. Sometimes autism is over diagnosed. I worked in that field. But for the most part it is a real and terrible problem for the parents who struggle day to day for that child. To teach, to educate and to find social acceptance. It can be heartbreaking.

Savage is an intelligent man. An educated man. This is probably the worst part of what he does for a living. He knows better and still he says the things he does. Things that are either lies, or exaggerations that cause needless pain. I sometimes wonder about these kinds of people.

Savage must have had a very sad childhood. Perhaps because he is physically unattractive, that may be part of his problem. Who knows? Then again, he might be just twisted and mean.

    Huh? I addressed that already.

How does a “well, we know what it sounded like, but trust us, he’s a nice guy” testimonial from the CEO of Savage’s own network undo my argument? Besides, its not like that guy would have an interest in keeping the advertisers on board or anything. The entire network statement is damage control.

  36. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Hey pmav — you just mentioned “Vlad Lenin”. Is he named after the “Vladimir Lennon” you were talking about a few threads back?

Also — did you ever reply to me on last night’s Savage Wiener thread when I asked you how much context is enough? Four paragraphs apparently doesn’t cut it, so I’d like your baseline (and explanation why it’s necessary).

Also, did you ever post any transcript from Savage Wiener’s original autism show that would backup your contention that he was talking about the misdiagnosed kids when he said, “In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”?

Because I’ve scoured the transcript, and it sure seems to me like he’s making a pretty general statement about autism. I need some help here.

If the mighty Savage Wiener did prove that he was taken out of context, as you insist, it should be pretty easy to post a section of transcript from the show that demonstrates this. Post the transcript, juxtapose it against the “out-of-context” piece, and viola! Point made.

Michael Savage’s comments about Autistic children were beyond inexcusable and are unacceptable. […] We appreciate our many listeners who notified us of Savage’s comments, especially those listeners who have autistic children.

My son is almost 26 years old, and when he was diagnosed the general public didn’t know anything about autism — except maybe that “those kids” screamed a lot and banged their heads.

Now, because of the education about and exposure of what autism really is, people are gaining a better understanding of the spectrum of autistic disorders.

My son is extremely fortunate, others not so much. Only a weak-minded and sick bully would attack people with autism, or any other disability. Or anyone, for that matter.

    1) A mule
    2) Other farm animals
    3) A watermelon
    4) A MAN!

Yep! Ole Neal Horsely had sex with a guy (and other “fun stuff”) and refused to correct the record after Colmes gave him several chances to!

    Bah hahahahahahahahahaha!

This is directly from the transcript of his comments:
“I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”

Did he say “misdiagnosed”? No, he did not.

He said that 99% of Autism cases are brats.

Savage should be afraid to look in the mirror, but it would require shame to feel sorry for his remarks, and that’s one value that Savage has never once shown.

I find this statement highly offensive to comedians.

Seriously - what these guys do may be fodder for comedy, but it sure isn’t funny. People don’t base their political views and their votes on what Carlos Mencia or Chris Rock or the late George Carlin have said in their routines. Many people do base their views and votes on Limbaugh and Savage, however. They repeat their right-wing talking points verbatim, and these catchphrases become the basis of their listeners’ views on race and immigration and health care and foreign policy.

And it is important that rational people know the kind of hate speech that’s spewing out of millions of TVs and radios every day in this country. I don’t think we should give these fascists too much publicity, but we should be aware of what they’re saying and what their followers are repeating.

It is the phony’s and the misdiagnosed and falsly diagnosed that we are addressing on the savage nation. Tim43, since you’ve chosen to shoulder the mantle of Savage apologist that pmavrk decide to abandon, I’ll ask you:

How much context is sufficient to glean the intent and tone of a commentary?

You ask, “are you simply taking one small sentence out of the entire context of the show?”

    The simple answer is no.

On an earlier thread I pasted four full paragraphs of transcript. (I can do it again here if you’d like.)

In those four full paragraphs, Savage said not a single word to qualify his statements like “In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”

Not a single instance of clarification as you suggest.

I’ll accept the quote you pull as accurate. But even then, when you combine that with Savage Wiener’s assessment that “99 percent of the cases it’s a brat”, this doesn’t leave very many actual cases of autism to be defended, does it? It’s pretty clear.

I do notice that all of you guys who come here defending your boy the Savage Wiener love to toss off phrases like “Leninist” and “Stalinist”. Is that part of your marching orders? Do your overlords think it’s more effective if you all sound the same?

  86. KingCranky Says:

Savage is now backpedaling, claiming his comments were actually a “parody“.

How “parody” can be gleaned from this codswallop isn’t clear, or likely even possible.

Sounds like Savage is getting defensive about the trouble shooting off his big mouth has gotten him into this time.

An intemperate swine like Savage shouldn’t whine when his own strong language draws intense, and richly-justified, blowback.

And, from the link above, Savage’s sheer hatred in this case has cost him seven stations.

He’ll try to complain that it’s censorship, but it’s just the free market at work.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving soul.

Can you tell us how this is relevant? Are you suggesting Congress is considering such a law?

Or are you rather conflating Savage Wiener’s right to speak freely with the privilege he’s afforded to speak on the public airwaves and get paid for it?

Are you trying to claim that Savage Wiener has a constitutional right to a radio show?

And by Savage’s thoroughly unscientific and uninformed assessment, 99% of all autism cases are not deserving of care and sympathy, since they’re “misdiagnosed.” All that “love and attention” goes only to the 1% that Savage deems “genuine.” On what basis does he determine whether a case of autism is “genuine?” Are there some behavioral studies that contradict the scientific evidence of the genetic or neurochemical causes of autism?

And thanks for the reminder about the First Amendment, which completely doesn’t apply. We’re not advocating that Congress issue any prior restraint on Savage. We’re advocating that the free market (i.e. his advertisers) decide not to support his hate speech, thus forcing him off the air. What’s the matter, Timmah - don’t you like the free market?

  90. Democrat Soldier Says:

Transcript from the July 16 broadcast of Talk Radio Network’s The Savage Nation:

SAVAGE: Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I’m not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket. For a long while, we were hearing that every minority child had asthma. Why did they sudden — why was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I’ll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], “When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], ‘I don’t know, the dust got me.’ ” See, everyone had asthma from the minority community. That was number one.

Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.

What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, “Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.”

Autism — everybody has an illness. If I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, “Don’t behave like a fool.” The worst thing he said — “Don’t behave like a fool. Don’t be anybody’s dummy. Don’t sound like an idiot. Don’t act like a girl. Don’t cry.” That’s what I was raised with. That’s what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You’re turning your son into a girl, and you’re turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That’s why we have the politicians we have.

    Nothing taken out of context.

    He didn’t talk about “misdiagnosed”.

He said “In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.”

Why do the apologists for Savage contiunue to ignore the truth?

  91. puddin head Says:

Funny, but it is not just on these few blogs — the sation received so many complaint calls that day that they were forced to take actions and make him take actions to apologize for the “confusion”. Thus, his own listeners had complaints about his comments in a volume that required the managers to step in and take some pretty drastic PR control actions.
Yep. But, as you said, it’s just us bloggers here “taking him oout of context”.
Additional question: were those quotes you listed in the original show, or in one of the “apology” shows?

“99% of women are prostitute-minded…” Oh, wait… you take me out of context…. see, THAT statement, taken in full context, is not inflammatory or derogatory…. (sarcasm)

Go ahead and scream about “OUT OF CONTEXT WAAAH BAAWWWWW” some more. I’ve heard enough of Savage’s rants, unfortunately, to know that no amount of context justifies giving the Weiner the benefit of the doubt. He’s getting his comeuppance. Deal with it.

Timmeh says the above quote was from “the show in question”. I assumed that meant it was from the July 16 show on which Savage Wiener originally vented his spleen about autistics. If that were so, it would be something of wider context for the offending remarks.

Here is an exerp from the Network that broadcasts Savage. You can read it entirely on http://www.savageonautism.com/.

The Network commenced this discussion in the July 21st and 22nd broadcasts of The Michael Savage Show. For those who believe that the 84 seconds cited by Media Matters defines Michael Savage’s views on autism, the Network recommends going to (or clicking) http://www.savageonautism.com/ to view a representative sampling of Dr. Savage’s views, as well as the applicable issues, in true context.

In short, Media Matters is he-ll bent on destroying conservative talk radio regardless of what it takes.

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1878111/posts

Media Matters For America was created by David Brock, a self-described “hit man,” self-confessed liar, and gossip peddler. His past casts a shadow over his current self-proclaimed dedication to truth-telling. Previously he viciously attacked Clintons and Bushes, Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas, Rush Limbaugh and National Public Radio, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Each time he recants a prior assault he lunges out at a new political enemy.

Brock puts himself in the position of someone who says, “I’m a liar. Believe what I tell you.” Journalist Christopher Hitchens wrote Brock “is incapable of recognizing the truth, let alone of telling it.
