Last week, Media Matters caught right-wing radio talker Michael Savage claiming that autism is a “fraud” and “a racket” where “99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.” But Savage’s controversial remarks about autistic children have gotten him booted off Cleveland’s airwaves, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports:
WHK AM/1420, the only Cleveland-area station carrying Savage’s radio talk show, is breaking its contract with Savage’s syndicator, Talk Radio Network, said Mark Jaycox, who manages the Cleveland stations under the Salem Communications corporate umbrella.
“This guy’s a knucklehead, and I want to get rid of him,” Jaycox said. The radio station Super Talk Mississippi announced recently that they were canceling Savage’s show because of the autism comments.

You see, as with all right-wingers, the high talk and high ideals all fly out the window when their wallet is threatened.
July 25th, 2008 at 12:42 pmThe Savage-Weiner just might be toast. That’s one down and still quite a few to go. Who should be dropped next?
July 25th, 2008 at 12:42 pmWhile it’s clearly true that Michael Savage is indeed a knucklehead, why did it take the autism comments to make radio stations wake up and notice this? Did they not notice Savage was a knucklehead when he was making all sorts of wildly hateful and erroneous statements about Democrats, about Muslims, and about the ACLU? Or did the stations find those statements acceptable?

He never will. Instead, his M.O. is to whine loudly that his remarks were “taken out of context” and that he was really talking about kids who are misdiagnosed. Like we’re supposed to believe that when he claims there is no such thing as autism and waving numbers around like “99%”.

Don’t know what Savage will do without those beacons of high society.
Seems to me that the libs who run those stations were simply looking for a reason to ban free speech from reaching their customers.
Someone else will come in to bring Savage back on the air … and thus squash those worthless stations. Their fate will be the same as the flailing liberal newspapers and failed sc-AIR America.

Who’s taking odds on when Savage issues an apology.
No he didn’t but this is what he had to say in defense of his “hateful” comments.
On Monday Savage said he was trying to “boldly awaken” parents to his view that many people are being wrongly diagnosed. Savage defended himself in the interview with Grant. “Let’s save our sympathies and our scarce resources for the truly sick child,” Savage said. “I hope that does make it to the television,” Savage told Grant. “I’m glad I’m exposing the fraud in the autism community and at the same time creating support for the truly autistic.”
Savage said Tuesday that his deceased brother had brain damage. He said he actually knows what it is like to grow up with what he characterized as a “crippled child.”
Savage spin- to awaken the world to fraud of misdiagnosis.
I’m sorry but that is just ludicris to think anyone would get that meaning from what he was saying. I’m glad to see the emails and phone calls are working. Only 348 radio stations to go.

So, this is a “free speech” matter? I thought, as was already mentioned, that this was a “free market” decision. Or do you propose that anyone who wants to be on syndicated public airwaves should be able to demand a constitutional right to be paid by the stations to broadcast, regardless of the decisions of the stations (which ARE businesses, and make their decisions based on financial reasons).
Why are Republicans and neo-cons against a free capitalist market?

July 25th, 2008 at 1:25 pmTimmeh thinks this is a “free speech” issue?
Does he think Savage Wiener is on the radio for his health?
Timmeh, listen up — you have every right to insult the residents of Mississippi and Cleveland. No one can put you in jail for it. THAT is free speech.
Now, if you had a radio show in Cleveland and you made a remark like that and the station got complaints and dumped your show, that would not be a “free speech” issue.
Get the difference?

Dennis Prager

Hugh Hewitt

I think so. Been years since I’ve seen it. It’s finally come out on DVD but they want $40. Ouch. I hear it’s quite a spaghetti western cult fav. I just still love that quote:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:45 pmI am one of the parents who wrote to WHK because I was enraged by Savage’s rant.
My son has Asperger’s Syndrome.
This isn’t a matter of free speech. I am a Democrat, I’m not homophobic, or racist and when Savage makes attacks on these groups of people and I think it is wrong, but these groups of people can defend themselves. The difference in this case is that he made a verbal attack on disabled children who don’t have a voice to defend themselves. He verbally attacked my seven year old and called him a “brat” and an “idiot.”
Also, when choosing radio programming, is it necessary to include crappy programming just for the sake of “free speech?” There are other conservative talk show hosts who are reasonably intelligent, are able to discuss conservative issues and also have at least a little compassion for human beings, especially children.
Free speech, sure, but why not weed out the ignorant buffoons and give the conservative hosts who have half a brain the airwaves instead?
July 26th, 2008 at 2:12 am57. biffmctavish Says: You folks talk about getting rid of Savage, Hanity, Limbaugh and others. Just bring back the fairness doctrine and limit free speach. Better yet, just get rid of anyone who you hate. Then, you’ll always be right.
Um, no; it’s getting rid of people who hate. Therein lies the difference.
Now, some of you people will call me names and spout hatred. Before you do, I ask you to remember these words:
“When the Nazis came for the communists,I remained silent;I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,I remained silent;I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,I did not speak out;I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,I remained silent;I wasn’t a Jew.
When they came for me,there was no one left to speak out.”
When they came for the Nazis, no one spoke out because the nazis were @ssholes who wanted to wrap themselves in the flag and first amendment and tell lies and propaganda to their heart’s content.
Here is the result of biffmctavish’s brand of “free speach”[sic]
With free speech comes great responsibility, responsibility that Weiner is abdicating in favor of spreading popular distortions and inciting entrenched stereotyped prejudices. That is not what the first amendment was created to support.
July 26th, 2008 at 6:06 ambiffmctavish Says: Or perhaps you will accuse me of calling autistic children “brats” like you do Savage.

July 26th, 2008 at 2:20 pmDon’t racist comments pertain to ethnic descent, a group of people who share common heredity, or physical characteristics such as skin color?
Since the general tone of your comments is that you are defending Michael Savage’s attack of autistic children then it is safe to assume that you are also homophobic because anyone who would support Michael Savage at this point is a total right wing nut job. Right wing nut jobs are always homophobes, so basically I think that brown acid was trying to ruffle your homophobic feathers.
July 27th, 2008 at 12:36 amI’m not seeing any discussing of issues, biff. Only that you’re really upset about me knowing that you are cut of the same cloth as Savage because you defend him.
Savage and his followers are nothing if not really excited about the fact that they are totally ignorant. Savage and his kind should get excited about studying current events instead of continuing on with a chronic case of mouth diarrhea.

Thank you Jim! You said it! I might be mistaken, but I find it a little nauseating that the Cleveland Plain Dealer didn’t mention the Asthma/Minority comment, the misogynistic comment against the female gender, the countless attacks on these groups as well as Islam over the years, etc., etc. BTW, just because he’s Jewish doesn’t negate the fact that he’s an anti-semite; and has been getting away with this fifth-grade level hate speech for years. Is The Cleveland Plain Dealer protecting Salem ["Witch Hunters"] from certain populations in Cleveland? Why leave out the whole story for busy Clevelanders, who probably don’t listen to that garbage in the first place? (This is why we need to donate to certain independent radio stations in Cleveland, to keep them going.)
. . . and no, I’m not going to start shopping @ the substandard corporations that funded his programming this whole time. This sudden “awakening” of moral hypocrisy @ the corporate level is just sickening. A) Is it that they woke up and smelled the coffee or more likely, B) that they finally pretended to wake up, because they smelled all the $$ they were losing for a while; and were forced to “cut-n-run” @ the last possible moment?
My spouse and I were just talking about this the other day. I would like to thank Jim for being brave and making that comment early on.
