“A petition to send former White House deputy chief of state Karl Rove to jail over refusing a subpoena to testify before a House committee has gained over 100,000 signatures,” according to Robert Greenwald’s Brave New Films and online activists.

The EPA’s Inspector General’s Office has said that “voluntary pollution-reduction programs touted by the Bush administration as part of the solution to global warming have ‘limited potential’ to reduce greenhouse gases.” The “industry’s unwillingness to participate and unreliable data that casts doubt on claimed reductions are hindering efforts to control some of the most potent greenhouse gases.”

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) on Thursday announced joint appointments to a landmark ethics review board” that will allow private citizens to review allegations against members. The co-chairman will be former CIA director Porter Goss, who “opposed launching an investigation into the Valerie Plame CIA leak case.”

The American public is not buying the arguments of President Bush and the oil industry that new drilling will lower gas prices,” with 63 percent saying increased drilling is “more likely to enrich oil companies than to lower gas prices.” A separate Wall Street Journal/NBC poll found that voters trust Democrats over Republicans to deal with energy, 42 to 22 percent.

On the trail today: Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) continues his overseas trip in France today, where he will meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will speak in Denver, CO and will then head to Aspen to meet with the Dalai Lama.

Rep. George Miller (D-CA) pledged today to introduce legislation that would “block an eleventh-hour effort by the Labor Department to make it more difficult to limit workers’ exposure to chemicals on the job.” Miller said he was determined to stop the “secret rule” that has been described as “a parting gift” to industry from the Bush administration.

Home foreclosure filings rose 14 percent in the second quarter, the eighth consecutive quarterly climb, and more than doubled from the same period a year-earlier, real estate data firm RealtyTrac said on Friday.” Home foreclosures were up 121 percent from a year earlier, “amid the worst U.S. housing market downturn since the Great Depression.”

The U.S. Embassy in Iraq announced yesterday “that it had expanded tenfold its program to help Iraqi employees of the American government here” to obtain visas and ultimately American citizenship. However, critics noted that the U.S. “had promised several times that it would try to speed up the process, and that it had not come through.”

And finally: Ted Stevens sticks by his “series of tubes.” In 2006, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) was widely mocked after he described the internet as “a series of tubes” that “can be filled.” Asked this week if he stuck by that description, Stevens said, “I do,” before adding that he’s “still not sure about the difference between tubes and pipes.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Rove Threatened GOP IT Guru If He Does Not ‘Take the Fall’ for Election Fraud in Ohio, Says Attorney

Letter Sent to Attorney General Mukasey Requesting ‘Protection for Mr. Connell and His Family From This Reported Attempt to Intimidate a Witness’ After Tip from ‘Credible Source’

UPDATE: OH AG Reportedly Asked to Provide Immunity Protection…

Karl Rove has threatened a GOP high-tech guru and his wife, if he does not “‘take the fall’ for election fraud in Ohio,” according to a letter sent this morning to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, by Ohio election attorney Cliff Arnebeck.

The email, posted in full below, details threats against Mike Connell of the Republican firm New Media Communications, which describes itself on its website as “a powerhouse in the field of Republican website development and Internet services” and having “played a strategic role in helping the GOP expand its technological supremacy.”

Connell was described in a recent interview with the plaintiff’s attorneys in Ohio as a “high IQ Forrest Gump” for his appearance “at the scene of every [GOP] crime” from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004 to the RNC email system to the installation of the currently-used Congressional computer network firewall.

Connell and his firm are currently employed by the John McCain campaign, as well as the RNC and other Republican and so-called “faith-based” organizations. In a phone call this afternoon, Arnebeck could not publicly reveal specific details of the information that triggered his concern about the threats to Connell. The message to the IT man from Rove is said to have been sent via a go-between in Ohio. That information led Arnebeck to contact Mukasey after he found the reports to be credible and troubling.

“If there’s a credible threat, which I regard this to be,” he told The BRAD BLOG, “I have a professional duty to report it.” In his email to Mukasey today, Arnebeck writes: “We have been confidentially informed by a source we believe to be credible that Karl Rove has threatened Michael Connell, a principal witness we have identified in our King Lincoln case in federal court in Columbus, Ohio, that if he does not agree to ‘take the fall’ for election fraud in Ohio, his wife Heather will be prosecuted for supposed lobby law violations.”

    http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6214

This sounds very familiar, like what Rove did to Valerie Plame. Why does Rove always go after the wives of these men? He is a jutless, vile little man that will do anything to stay out of jail. Also, how will McCain claim he didn’t know what Connell did in Ohio & Florida? I can hear the spin already. Is that why McCain has him on the payroll to help fix this election? Was anyone heard a word about this in the MSM? *silence* It looks like McCain will stoop to any level even cheating, so that he wins.

NZ students offer cash for Condoleezza Rice’s “arrest”

A group of New Zealand students has come up with a novel way of protesting against a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, offering a cash reward for her “arrest” over U.S. actions in Iraq.

The Auckland University Students’ Association has offered NZ$5,000 ($3,700) for any student making a citizen’s arrest of Rice during her 36-hour stay that starts later on Friday. “It’s primarily symbolic, but it’s a protest against her actions as secretary of state in Iraq and the authorization of the torture of suspected terrorist detainees,” said the student body’s president, David Do.

Police said the stunt was disturbing, and warned no-one would be allowed to disrupt the visit. “We are obliged to ensure the safety and security of the visiting guest and we will not shirk from that task,” said District Commander Superintendent Brett England in a statement.

I think it is a great idea. Hopefully the message hits home, that Condi at least has the presence of mind to realize other countries find her actions criminal. That she should be arrested and thrown in jail for real not as just a “symbolic gesture”. I take it she won’t be traveling outside the US after she is out of office, she won’t have diplomatic immunity anymore.

**This is shocking. A state AG requests protection from the US AG for an IT specialist because of threats made by KKKarl Rove. I am sure Mucus-a$$hat will give this his full attention. How long have we let this worthless POS walk around free? How much worse do things need to get before our elected reps (complicit crooks?) do something? This is not a rhetorical question. There are still plenty of months before the election to campaign to NOT re-elect ANYONE who refuses to enforce the rules of law, investigate, prosecute and lock these bastards up. Represent US or get voted out – it’s that simple. I will not be happy if much of this is no in the process of being resolved when Obama takes office next January. Chew on this – what if Bush pardons everyone but the Dems who have been complicit in this lawbreaking and coverups?</em>

‘Imperial presidency’ hearing to feature 13 witnesses
Kucinich, Barr, Bugliosi among those testifying

The House Judiciary Committee has released a witness list for its hearing to examine “the imperial presidency” of George W. Bush.

Testifying Friday morning will be Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who has introduced several resolutions calling for President Bush’s and Vice President Dick Cheney’s impeachment; former Rep. Bob Barr, the Libertarian presidential candidate who led the charge to impeach Bill Clinton in 1998; Vincent Bugliosi, author of the just-released book The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder; and 10 other current and former members of Congress, constitutional experts and human rights activists.

“Americans have been waiting for Congress to hold the President accountable for his long list of misdeeds and misrepresentations. This hearing is a long overdue first step,” Kucinich said. “Congress enacted legislation authorizing the use of force against Iraq based on representations made by the White House. We now know that these representations were false and that the White House knew them to be false.”

The hearing, which was announced last week, seems to be the one Judiciary Chairman John Conyers promised to Kucinich after he introduced his second impeachment resolution aimed at Bush earlier this month. Any action on Kucinich’s articles of impeachment still seems unlikely, but the Ohio Democrat has previously said he just wants to be able to present his case.

Late Thursday afternoon, the committee released the full witness list, broken down into two panels.

    Read the list:
    http://rawstory.com//news/2008/Imperial_presidency_hearing_to_feature_13_0724.html

** Haven’t been able to find any more information about Kucinich’s unnamed witness. I hope that this gets SOME MSM coverage so the “average” citizens who do not follow progressive blogs and news sources find out about this. I think that it could help force Pelosi and her band of complicit crooks to start impeachment proceedings.

    Iraqi Teams Banned From Olympics

Just two weeks before the start of the Olympics, Iraq was told Thursday it’s not welcome in Beijing because of a political feud in Baghdad that angered the games’ guardians and exiled a country that arrived to a roaring ovation at the opening ceremony four years ago.

The International Olympic Committee told Iraqi sports officials in a letter that it would uphold its ban imposed in June after the government in Baghdad replaced its national Olympic panel with members not recognized by the IOC.

The IOC had called the move unacceptable government interference. “Clearly we’d very much like to have seen Iraq’s athletes in Beijing,” said IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies. “We are very disappointed that the athletes have been so ill-served by their own government’s actions.”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/24/iraqi-teams-banned-from-o_n_114828.html

If the IOC really cared about government actions what are they doing having the games in China. I’m sorry, this is hypocritical to an extreme. But the IOC thought that Odai, Saddam Hussein’s son, was an acceptable representative even though he “was accused of torturing athletes who came up short.” This is the one time an athlete can shine and not carry the sigma of the country they represent. I think they should be allowed to compete.

Obama and the “Keeper of the Secret”

    Bill Anderson
    LRC Blog
    July 24, 2008

It seems that every once in a while, our political classes and their media partners place the mantle of “Keeper of the Secret” upon a political figure. After he was assassinated (but not before) John F. Kennedy was given that title.

Alas, the title then fell to Jimmy Carter, but he apparently could not keep the secret, so we waited for Teddy Kennedy, but he had this little problem of not winning the nomination for president. Then it was John Jr., who had to take the New York Bar Exam at least three times before passing it but he, too, died before he could lead us to the Promised Land.

Today, Barack Obama is the official “Keeper of the Secret.” Yes, Obama KNOWS how to make socialism work; he can remake the Law of Scarcity, and he can bring peace and prosperity to everyone simply by manipulating the tax code and subsidizing fascist entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Today’s “The Messiah Has Arrived” speech in Berlin was just another example of this worshipful nonsense that the political classes foist upon people. I recently read a bumper sticker with Obama’s picture on it and “Hope” written under the picture.

I’m sorry, but the idea of a politician being the source of hope is too much. And Obama as the Messiah is just plain laughable, yet we can expect to see this kind of coverage for the next year or more, since I am sure he easily will win the presidential election. The last time we saw this kind of political adulation was when the Roman emperors claimed to be gods. That will be the next step for Obama. Stay tuned.

Democratic Convention To Include Interfaith Service Led By Pentecostal

Plans are coming together for the 2008 Democratic National Convention scheduled next month in Denver. But one question remains for the organizers to answer – what to do with those pesky atheists in the party. Specifically, should they be represented in the interfaith service someone deemed necessary to open the Convention? And in case you haven’t heard about that yet, not only will there be an interfaith service, but it will be led by a Pentecostal minister, Leah Daughtry.

If you don’t recall interfaith services at previous Democratic conventions, that is because this appears to be the first. Not surprisingly, atheists are asking whether they will have any role in such a service or whether they are correct to interpret this as exclusionary.

Personally, I am not overly worried about whether atheists end up being part of the interfaith service or not. On the other hand, I am worried about why an interfaith service is deemed necessary in a country founded on separation of church and state. I am even more bothered over the role of a Pentecostal minister in organizing the service.

If this article is accurate, as I believe it is, in describing the Pentecostal brand of Christianity as “a fast-growing growing branch of evangelical Christianity that emphasizes the supernatural, including healing, prophesy and speaking in tongues,” you’ll understand my concern. Modern Americans should be embarrassed by such a set of beliefs rather than trying to elevate them in status.

The freethinkers didn’t want religion polluting their politics, while the Evangelicals didn’t want politics polluting their religion. As a result, America became a secular nation.

Unfortunately, the Evangelicals changed their minds, as too many churches try to influence politics these days.

This is a major issue where I am disappointed with Obama’s refusal to acknowledge, much less accept and include non-religious America. We are, after all, the fastest growing ‘religious group’ in the nation.

With Arizona Changing, McCain Focuses on Home

PHOENIX — As a general rule, Senator John McCain does not alert the news media when he eats breakfast in Arizona.

But on a Monday morning this month, Mr. McCain campaigned in a local diner, after a Sunday stop at his campaign office here, where he urged volunteers to “make sure we get our voters registered, to make sure we are organized.”

In the sea of uncertainty that defines American politics, presidential candidates have generally been able to count on the residents of their home state, Al Gore’s loss of Tennessee in 2000 being a notable exception.

But a variety of factors have made Mr. McCain’s chances in Arizona less assured than they ordinarily would seem, which his campaign has acknowledged.

The number of independent voters in Arizona has risen 12 percent since 2004, and those voters have helped send a Democrat to the governor’s mansion and given the party four of the state’s eight Congressional seats — including two in 2006, one in a historically Republican district.

At the same time, Arizona Democrats, like many of their counterparts around the country, have outpaced Republicans in voter registration, adding almost 20,000 voters to the rolls since March, compared with the Republican majority’s 8,600 new voters. The second-term Democratic governor, Janet Napolitano, remains wildly popular.

Last month, the McCain campaign startlingly added Arizona to its list of 24 “battleground states,” a fact that state Democrats have clung to like sprinkles on a soft-serve ice cream cone.

  44. Kay says:

The Denver Post has announced the plans for the DNC Free Speech Zone for the Denver Convention.

“The fence around the public demonstration zone outside the Democratic National Convention will be chicken wire or chain link, authorities revealed in U.S. District Court today. That may allow protesters to be seen and heard by delegates going in and out of the Pepsi Center during the convention.

But the American Civil Liberties Union and several advocacy groups have filed an amended complaint to their lawsuit against the U.S. Secret Service and the city and county of Denver that says protesters and demonstrators may have their First Amendment rights violated by security restrictions.

The ACLU has said it wants to avoid the conditions that existed during the 2004 convention in Boston, where protesters were caged, infuriating First Amendment advocates.

The first phase of the lawsuit asked the court to compel the city and the Secret Service to disclose the information on protest restrictions.

During today’s hearing before Judge Marcia S. Krieger, the attorney for the groups, Steve Zansberg, said the city and the Secret Service had provided the information sought in Phase One.

The second phase of the lawsuit will address whether the restrictions are unconstitutional. Zansberg also represents The Denver Post on First Amendment issues, though the paper is not a party in this dispute.

The groups agreed to go to trial on those issues on July 29 and the judge will visit the site the night before to assess the restrictions.

Guess Pumas and folks that are planning to March on the DNC better be prepared to be caged. Of course, I’m not sure how well Pumas do in cages. Hopefully, this court challenge will stop further erosion of first amendment rights. According to another article in the Post, these are some changes being requested by the ACLU and 13 other groups.

An increase in the size and location of the public demonstration zone in Lot A of the Pepsi Center so that people in the zone can access delegates through sight and sound and an electrically-powered sound amplification system.

Change the parameters of the zone to accommodate more people marching to the Pepsi Center during the convention.

Stop searches of people or possessions where such searches are based on a person’s entry into the zone rather than “probable cause” or “reasonable suspicion.”

Allow for the distribution of leaflets and pamphlets to the delgates.

Allow for parades that pass by the Pepsi Center along the south side of Chopper Circle and the adjoining east side of Ninth Street during times when the delegates are present.

Allow alternative parades requested by Recreate 68 to the federal courthouse on Aug. 25 and by Escuela Tlatelolco to Sunken Gardens Park on Aug. 26.

Right now, protesters will be kept in an area where they will not be able to leaflet convention attendees. They will not be allowed to parade when conventioneers are entering or leaving the Pepsi Convent Center. They will at least be seen. However, this effectively blocks any access protesters will have to their supposedly democratically elected representatives.

    So much for Free Speech.

And then there was McCain complaining about Obama’s Berlin speech, which apparently should only be done by a president, not a candidate. “I’d like to make a speech in Europe . . . ” except, my friend, no one would show up!

And, further good news: according to the Republicans, Arizona is a battleground state. Arizona!

puddin head: “In fact, every religion involving itself in politics has at its root the desire to create a theocracy”

I’d say ‘every hierarchical religion has at it’s roots the desire to create a theocracy”. The major re;igions, Christianity and Islam are absolutely political organizations and always have been.
The Roman Catholic church anointed and appointed rulers in Europe and manipulated successions for their own ends. They derived their original ‘authority’ from the Roman Empire.

I;d argue that because the Muslim faith has no single leader it’s influence is rather dispersed and the majority of Muslim nations are still very tribal and clannish, feudal basically so the political power of the entire faith has been and still is fractured and localized, genrally operating within defined borders.
The Roman Catholic Church was built up from the Roman Empire and was able to exploit it.

Religion’s can’t help but be political. What was it Jesus supposedly said? “Where two or more are gathered in God’s name that is a church” ?

By the same token ‘where two or more are gathered in the name of anything, that’s a political party‘.

But as you say, it’s the goddammed dogma that’s the issue. And also the false piety.

I don’t know about that, but your question brings to mind the fact that Howard Dean has said that the Democratic pledged delegates MAY VOTE THEIR CONSCIENCE instead of voting for the candidate they are pledged to on the first ballot. While I don’t expect too many defectors, I imagine the flexibility is there just in case the presumptive nominee starts eating live babies on the U.S. Capitol steps immediately prior to the convention.

That would be $1,900.00 per family member if I remember correctly….All except the native tribe’s live there by choice..Native’s have lived there for generation’s..The few native’s predominately durive their living by the old way’s of fishing, pelt’s and hunting…I’m sorry, having known many previous Alaskan resident’s and heard from them I do not agree with your assesment’s…Further your post’s regarding your information using gail norton were of no value knowing her past and present affair’s…I do send you Blessings

  112. Kay says:

    Fred Says:

Now you step beyond your irrational hatred for Obama and are attacking the entire democratic party?

Well, first things first. I never said I have hatred for Obama. At best, I am wary of Obama. Especially in light of his change in positions re: FISA and Afghanistan.

Second of all, I have never been/never will be a racist. You don’t know me, so you cannot ascribe those qualities to me.

Most of all, I am a taxpaying citizen of this country — and I have every right to assert my positions.

For the DNC to erect cages for protesters is barbaric. If having a contrary opinion is worth of being called a troll, so be it.

    Re-investigate 9/11
    Impeach.
    World Court Tribunal.

  113. RickS says:

How about requiring the oil industry develop and drill the 68 million acres of federal land they already have leases on before they are allowed access to ANWR and to offshore areas?

Also, the Energy Deparment’s Energy Information Administration show that if ANWR and off shore drllling were allowed this year, it would take four years (2012) to settle the leasing rights, three to five years (2015-17, not counting for intangibles) for oil production to actually begin, and then ten years for the oil produced to have a marginal impact on domestic markets (2027-30).

Lastly, how is it that GW Bush goes from his 2007 position of getting America off their oil addiction to his 2008 position of “we need more oil, dammit!”

I hope to God that this guy doesn’t open up a drug treatment center after he leaves office.

  114. curious says:

Porter Goss and Nancy Pelosi making him head of the investigation. It figures. He would not investigate the Plame case, so of course there is not a chance for a real watch dog of any kind.

Especially in a do nothing Congress. What a joke. I bet the old shredding machine is running hot with over use. Getting rid of all documents that prove the Congress might have done wrong by us.

What a joke. Just another stupid, inane bit of theater to convince the voters things had changed when they will not. As long as the current crop of legislators, Pelosi in particular is running this corrupt congress nothing will be done. They will try and misdirect as much as possible. To keep from doing any authentic, substantive change. Especially one that covers:campaign finance reform, lobbyists, impeachment, or oversight of pork barrel spending etc.

The list is so long of what congress should be watching, there is no need to make a list. Just watch everything. Especially each other.

Pelosi must be the biggest phony is a congress full of phonies. And that is saying something.

  115. RickS says:

    like here?:

    http://resourcescommittee.house.gov/images/stories/Documents/truth_about_americas_energy.pdf

And I would still like to know: why drill in ANWR and off shore when the impact on prices is both marginal and not felt until 2027-2030?

And why this change by Bush from taking on America’s addiction to oil to just keep feeding it?

  116. Witch1 says:

jw,clearly you are out of touch as well…I never mentioned racial or length of time you have lived anywhere..I also did not mention my attachment to any political party…Your’s seem obvious…May I suggest the oil companies use the present 28,000 leases they have tied up now before they go for another land grab of monumental praportion..That figure is from the senate hearing’s…

It was also stated by several oil companie’s that none of the oil you so desperately want drilled for in Alaska would go by pipe line but by barge to Japan, China and other foreign port’s….Same hearing’s..

Since you have a financial stake in this matter, getting your yearly check and all I hardly think you are a good link to what’s best for the country, Alaska and the world concerning oil companies and their miserable track record…

One last comment, very few people in the world have a choice of where they live..Birth, availability to water, food, job’s and all resourses dictate that…So it is in Africa it is also true of many in Alaska…I assume nothing except you are trolling for your own self intrest…

  117. Witch1 says:

Sorry….after Alaska would ..should read NOT go by pipe line….

  118. RickS says:

Whoops, here’s that ANWR link again:

  119. Musk says:

Plain and simple. Everyone, including Republicans, knows that Rove is guilty as sin on numerous accounts. However, this ridiculous game both sides are playing, has turned the undeniable fact that Rove deserves to be in prison, on it’s head. It’s so damn simple. The Democrats need to stop being some god-damned calculating and timid, and The Republicans need to be so god-damned calculating and arrogant. This isn’t a game! Shame on both sides. Not everything is a popularity contest.
