McClellan: Fox News Commentators Use The ‘Talking Points’ That The White House Sends Them

On MSNBC’s Hardball last night, host Chris Matthews asked former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan if he saw “FOX television as a tool” to get the White House’s “message out” while he was in the Bush administration. “Certainly there were commentators and other, pundits at FOX News, that were useful to the White House,” replied McClellan, adding that they were given “talking points.”

Making a distinction between journalists like Brit Hume and commentators like Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly, McClellan admitted that “certainly” the White House used Fox News talking heads as “spokespeople” with “a script”:

MATTHEWS: So, you wouldn’t use Brit Hume to sell stuff for them, but you’d use some of the nighttime guys?

MCCLELLAN: Yeah, I would separate that out, and certainly I, you know, they’ll say, that’s because they agree with those views in the White House.

MATTHEWS: Well, they didn’t need a script though, did they?

MCCLELLAN: No, well, probably not.

McClellan later told MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann that “it was done frequently, especially on high-profile issues” and that Fox often gave the White House “its desired results.” Current Press Secretary Dana Perino would only tell Olbermann, “I’m not aware of that.” Watch it:

Fox News’s close relationship to the Bush administration should come as no surprise to anyone, considering Fox’s Neil Cavuto once ran a segment asking if George W. Bush was “the best President.” But, as Olbermann notes, it “is one of those things you assumed to be true all along, yet you are shocked when the hard confirmation actually shows up on your door.”

Not only is Fox the network the White House turned to when Vice President Dick Cheney had to explain how he shot his friend in the face, but the network has also produced sympathetic documentaries on both Cheney and President Bush.

Is Dana saying that "in no time during her at least two year tenure at the White House Press Office did she prepare or pass on to Fox News commentators White House talking points?"

That's the problem with the Bushies, you have to ask the question exactly right to have a chance at an answer, honest or dishonest.

Nobody is saying that tapayer money was paid to Fox News Channel. Taxpayer money was spent paying the salaries of government employees, using government equipent, to disseminate misinformation to a privately owned media outlet for the express purpose of deceiving the public. That is, after all, what they have been doing all along.

How ironic. All these decades of demonising autocratic regimes, like the Soviet Union, when what Republicans wanted all along was recreate one such regime at home: Massive propaganda to mask failed policies, spying on their own citizens, curtail of individual rights, torture of prisoners to extract "confessions", cult of the personality of the Supreme (mis)Leader, concentration of power in the hands of said (mis)Leader, distortion of science for political purposes...

I agree, Gregor. The Republican Party has built its reputation on Reagan's (alleged) "heroic" defeat of the Soviet Union in the Cold War, only to have a Republican president turn us into the very thing they fought. By their own logic, we must all band together as Americans and defeat the Republican Party in November. It's what Reagan would have wanted. ;)

    Gregor is absolutely Correct.

    Otherwise, it IS just propaganda.

Not to mention Pelosi, Conyers and Reid acting on...*snicker*...congress taking action...*guffaw*....congress intervening..*snort*..BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sorry, couldn't get through that sentence with a straight face.

  31. curious Says:

First it's a given that Perino is lying. She is not the brightest light. She is a mouth piece, but she may not have been bright enough to figure it out. Most of us already know.

When the President invited all the talking heads to the Whitehouse it came out that most were Fox. And ALL OF THEM were right wing. It came out in the news. And a few brave souls even mentioned (in passing)that doing this might not be quite kosher. Sort of like....oh let's see. Propoganda.

This administration has already broken the rule regarding propoganda on American soil. This became public knowledge just a couple of months ago. When it came out that the Pentagon, against the law, had hired retired military to go on television and the news to talk up the war. Supposedly they were giving their professional UNPAID opinions as former military. Now we find out they were told what to say and were paid to say it. So all these years the military that went on to say how well this war was going, were paid to do it.

So for McClellan to say that commentators were given talking points is a real laugh. Actually most everyone I know already knew this. In fact over the years it has been talked about frequently. Most of us long since gave up expecting the media to check fact, or to report honestly. If they report at all. The media in this country is low. They were hijacked many years ago. And nothing has changed. We have a barely functioning free, objective press. They, like this country are CORPORATE.

    The media sucks.

  32. Badger Says:

Latest results....75 thousand in the Rasmussen tracking poll,

For the first five weeks after clinching the Democratic Presidential Nomination, Obama consistently led McCain by five or six points. Then, in the two weeks leading up to Obama’s overseas trip, support for the Democrat softened and the race got a bit tighter (see recent daily results). So far, the impact of Obama’s trip has been to restore the five or six point lead he enjoyed after capturing the nomination

  33. shoeless Says:

    TripleKick 2 Says:

The irony is lost on you Gregor. The actual irony is that this disgraced tool McClellan is being used by the left to sell *its* propaganda.

This is a very telling post. First, TK admits that McClellan was a tool of the Bush administration. On that point, we can all agree. Then he claims that McClellan is now being used by the left to sell its propaganda.

This shows how victims of propaganda do not know the meaning of the word. Apparently, that is why they are taken in by the propaganda in the first place.

You see, if it is the truth, then it is not propaganda. Everyone has known for years that Fox News merely recites White House talking points, verbatim. This is not in question. Even TK knows this, but he likes it that way.

  34. Alejandro Says:

Isn't this the same "disgraced tool" that used to sell bush's propaganda? The problem TripleKick has is that McClellan's still selling it, only not as the truth anymore.

I fear if Obama does this himself, the media will destroy him as at this time there are not enough seeing the truth and especially ready to see the truth.

But the fascist MSM desperately needs to be exposed and this is our job for the time being.

  37. Alejandro Says:

You see, if it is the truth, then it is not propaganda.

Believe it or not, propaganda can consist of factual information. Propaganda is simply selling an agenda in order to sway a large number of people. You don't have to lie to do it. Of course, this does not apply to the current administration in the slightest.

And another source of damage to Obama:

Last week Thom Hartmann talked about phonied up emails he is getting from the right.. he gets these as he purposely signed up as a R on some sites just to keep informed of what they are doing.

The swift boating has started and Obama's numbers are down today

Apparently think tanks are sending out in masses what appear to be credible emails from a soldier, an Obama rally goer...making accusations Obama is a racists and making comments that smear Obama's image.

    Comments like:

I am a white person, Obama did not shake my hand at the rally as he did a black person and gave me a snear.

WE NEED TO ALSO GET OUT THERE, BE IT BLOGGING OR EMAIL, AND EXPOSE THIS OUTRAGE

  44. pete Says:

And we must always remember that we are dealing with people who make the argument that 200,000 Germans, waving American flags and screaming their appreciation for an inspiring speech, were buying into "anti American propaganda".

Note to uniformed jackasses: European polls after Sen Obama's speech in Germany have shown that their opinion of the U.S, and it's future, went up a good deal. And the thousands of cheering U.S soldiers in Iraq would seem to indicate that they are not overly concerned that Sen. Obama might "surrender on the brink of victory" as McSpin and his legion of trolls would like to believe.

  52. pete Says:

Again with the "leftist" crap? Here's a newsflash: the only "leftists" left in this country are those given the label by Bill0 and his ilk. It has nothing to do with politics.

And why does Bill0 hate the "far left loons" so much? Because the "leftists" report exactly what he says. They dare to believe that people are accountable for their words and deeds.

I'll tell you what. When an American Leftist holds foreign nationals without trial or invades the WRONG EFFING COUNTRY! We can talk. Until then, all arguments from behind and to the Right of Bill0's left nut are irrelevant.

The neocons made their play and their greed and incompetence got them caught. Again. Karl's "permanent majority" debased the GOP, the Presidency and the Nation. The "party of accountability" turned out to be a bunch of chickenshits, mindlessly clucking "I didn't do it" with blood on their hands.

There is only one logical conclusion, in light of record disapproval ratings and 200,000 enthusiastic Germans; the neocons shot their wads and bought a lemon. Just like their first two attempts in the Ford and Bush41 administrations, they have convinced the U.S. and the World that ANYONE is better than them.

P.S. European opinion of the U.S is important because they constitute our major allies and trading partners. Without their goodwill we become a Third World Nation.

Now I’m not here to defend him, however I don’t have any problem with his speech and I think its completely silly for sites like MMFA to waste their time parsing him in hopes of finding a weasely gotcha and then whine for him to be kicked off the air simply because of his views. Now I’m not here to defend him, however I don’t have any problem with his speech and I think its completely silly for sites like MMFA to waste their time parsing him in hopes of finding a weasely gotcha and then whine for him to be kicked off the air simply because of his views. That attempt to control speech is reminiscent of the soviet days and has no part in America.

First of all, the Soviet government controlled speech. I know y'all think that Stalin was big on petitions, but really, it's not true. Ralph was just messin' with you.

Second of all, you should try actual reading Media Matters some time, and you'd realize (or you could, if you were capable of objective thought) that they don't do "gotchas" and they don't "parse". The post nice long transcripts for that very reason -- so whining from people like you, or Weiner, or O'Reilly about being taken out of context become obviously laughable.

And finally, it's particularly amusing to listen to you accuse ThinkProgress and the commenters here of being "hateful". That's really one of the most obvious cases of projection I've seen in awhile. You can hardly contain your bile.

If you've been posting here a long time, as you say and which I do not doubt, why not list your previous login names? Just so we know who we're dealing with. Or is that too scary?

"I just don’t get it why the those on the left appear to be so concerned about how we’re liked in Europe. Is it because of the socialist countries there?"

NATO - which, by the way, McCain is calling to help out in Afghanistan. There's also a little thing called "trade" which is generally helped by having good relations between countries. There's also a need to battle terrorism (not in the ridiculous fashion that the Bush Administration and McCain want to) - so it's generally helpful to, again, have good relations with other countries.

"As i’ve explained to you before, I’m a libertarian. I’m not on McCain’s side, nor the GOP’s. The libertarian ideology is all about sticking to the constitution so spare me your lecture."

And if you're really a Libertarian, then Obama is a much better candidate than McCain - McCain wants to continue the role of America abroad that Bush started and is bankrupting our country. If you're a Libertarian, then you'd notice that Bush and McCain are both for taking away your freedom on a grand scale. Obama wants to get us out of Iraq, and, while I can't agree with him on FISA, is closer to the Libertarian platform thank McCain. More importantly, Obama is more reality-based candidate.

But, if you're not carrying water for McCain, then vote for Barr - that would do both us and the rest of the world a great deal of good.

  79. dixie blood Says:

I understand and couldn't agree more, but, my point remains that there's little to be done under existing conditions. So, the only way to make a meaningful statement is to hit them in the pocket books. If Congress wanted to give some power back to the People, they would follow the course I regularly recommend to my Rep and Senators. A bill to require cable/dish providers to offer true "ala carte" service.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to call your cable company and say: "I refuse to pay a penny to Faux. Please remove Faux News from my service package and adjust my bill accordingly"?

I don't subscribe to cable, personally, just to avoid supporting "corporate media". Don't worry, I'm not organizing a boycott and I most certainly would subscribe if I could pay for only the channels I want.

I just think it would be far more effective, and offer fewer opportunities for abuse and retaliation, than to try and regulate based on content. To borrow a phrase from the Reichwingers, "let the free market decide".

    Vile? Moi?

  97. pete Says:

Up is down. Black is white. Assenting opinions carry the most weight. Cause and effect have been reversed in Reichworld.

Here's the deal. Bill0, Sean, Karl, Irving Kristol's bouncing bundle of joy "Bloody Bill", and a host of others throughout media, have one thing in common.

The myth of the "Noble lie". If one examines their mission statements back to the late 40's, one will find that they intentionally lie with the expressed purpose of controlling the fear and rage of the ignorant masses.

It's a little realized fact that lying is the oldest, and most effective, method of mind control. Garbage in, garbage out.

The "new" take on the method is for the modern media to browbeat the sheeple with the message, "you are too stupid to form conclusions. Here they are. This is no time for individual reflection". And America has bought it, up till now.

I gain some hope from the fact that Faux's Nielsen ratings hold less significance in light of Chimpy's 71% disapproval rating.

P.P.S. The narrow window of perception provided by the authoritarian mindset doesn't allow for the realization that opposition to a, out of control, far right regime does not equate to liberalism. I think it's fair to say that TP posters cover a wide range of ideologies.

So far as I can tell, few are terribly "leftist". Most have a common goal. A return of accountability in our government. That's it. Some respond more strongly to some issues than others. But I think it's also fair to say that TP posters wouldn't care if God himself sat in the Oval Office. WRONG IS WRONG!

Neocons, psycoChristians(TM), trolls and other authoritarians can't let that simple fact penetrate their bubbles of delusion. Their side can do no wrong so any criticism is because the critic "hates" them. Need I really say, again, that it's the crimes, committed by Bushco in our names, that drive the perceived "hate".

Wake the eff up! The neocons have charted a course which will result in punishment that will make the Civil War look like a minor spat unless we purge the criminals from our government. Without a drastic change in course the civilized nations of the world will take the decisions out of our hands. Is anyone stupid enough to believe that we can't be isolated, much like the condition which helped destroy the Soviet Union?

That's where the net really shines. I don't need to sift through hours of hateful babble to get to the most recent outrage.

Though, when available, I try to find audio/video which provides context before I reach a conclusion about anyone's commentary. Can anyone from the Reich make that claim regarding "librul" commentators?

  101. wizard2000 Says:

Rupert Murdoch should be criminally charged with illegally propagandizing the American people.

There are laws against doing this.

Murdoch is Australian. He's a foreign agent. (Plus, he has close business and family contacts with the Communist Red Chinese).

For years, Murdoch has used our airwaves, owned by all American citizens, to spread his right-wing filth, lies and deceptions, shoveling this crap into the minds of anyone gullible enough, and weak-minded enough, to watch Faux News.

Murdoch's goal is obvious...Robber Baron Monopolism.

Murdoch views himself as one of the "owners" of the New World Order...which prompts him to keep expanding his "empire." He just bought the Wall Street Journal. He's just sunk his neo-Communist totalitarian claws into the Associate Press. And the Republican-controlled FCC sees nothing wrong with Murdoch, a foreign agent, gobbling up prime U.S. news media real estate, since the Republicans running the FCC are just as un-American and un-patriotic as dear old Rupert...who is just as crazy as any megalomaniac before him. Poor Rupert. Poor, poor Rupert.

    you seem to agree...

  105. ucsbclassics53 Says:

never mind the Bush administration and its follower's attempts to intimidate the press and anyone who dissents...

it's only Pravda when you project the Bush administration's sins onto the left...

  106. pete Says:

As our troll points out, without realizing it's significance, Bill0 has several hours per day to defend his unAmerican views.

Yet, blind worship of the Reich demands the defense of the Message! "America loves Bill0 enough to give him several hours of air time per day so he needs defense on the blogs because he won't admit he's a far Right loon who hates all that's best about America"! Scream the defenders of that which they claim needs no defense.

What a bunch of silly tits.

Then they have the utter gall to accuse dissenters of diverse views and experiences, of being uninformed, unpatriotic, lock-step partisans or even subversives. You can't be more hypocritical and unaware than that.

Their poor, shuttered, brains don't allow them to see that most don't give a rip about ideology. It's the policies stupid. The failed, ill planned, clumsily executed, misdirected, disastrous policies which have brought unprecedented shame to our country.

Here's a news flash. The needless, willful, damage caused by Bushco is measured in blood, death, destruction and terror. Many people, including people who REALLY MATTER have reached the obvious conclusion that Bushco engaged in a clumsy attempt at a colonial land grab. If he had filled them in on his real plans they would have laughed him off the continent. Most of the world knows colonialism doesn't work.

Everyone who knows a bit of history, including the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, knows that the best we can hope for is to get our people out of harms way without too many additional bloodbaths.

Then, if we kiss as$ for 50 years or so, Americans might be able to walk most of the Earth in honor and safety. But in some places we will always be "The Butchers". And even Bush and Cheney in adjoining cells won't change that sad fact.

Though people who are forgiving may, correctly, reserve their hate for Bushco. There's even some hope that people who have been misguided by their own leaders will cut the average American citizen some slack if we hold our own criminals accountable.

  107. Count Istvan Says:

  110. DallasNE Says:

Fox News wasn't alone in that regard. Add NBC into that mix. After all, we know from the Libby trial that Dick Cheney like to use Tim Russert for that same reason. And let's not forget Judith Miller at the NYT, Bob Woodward at the WP and Bob Novak as well.
