McCain Caves To Right Wing On Gay Adoption, Says Orphans Shouldn’t Have Gay Parents

Earlier this month, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) took an extreme position on gay adoption, telling the New York Times he believes in “traditional” families even if it means leaving children in orphanages. “I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no I don’t believe in gay adoption,” he said.

But in follow-up statement, McCain aide Jill Hazelbaker backtracked, stating, “McCain could have been clearer.” She added that the senator would support gay adoption if there were no alternative:

However, as an adoptive father himself…he recognizes that there are many abandoned children who have yet to find homes. McCain believes that in those situations that caring parental figures are better for the child than the alternative.

Interviewed on ABC today, however, McCain reverted to his original radical position, telling George Stephanopolous that he does not support gay adoption in any circumstance:

McCAIN: I think that family values are important, when we have two parent — families that are of parents that are the traditional family.

Q: But there are several hundred thousand children in the country who don’t have a home. And if a gay couple wants to adopt them, what’s wrong with that?

MCCAIN: I am for the values that two parent families, the traditional family represents.

Watch it:

McCain didn’t acknowledge that a two-parent family can also consist of same-sex parents. Unlike his spokeswoman, he also didn’t recognize that rejecting adoptions by same-sex parents means leaving thousands of children with no parents. As Winnie Stachelberg and Robert Gordon noted, about 130,000 children wait in the foster care system each year for a permanent home. And every year, half of these children are never placed.

In the interview, McCain repeatedly said that he is “for the values and principles that two parent families represent.” He also said preserving traditional families is “not the reason why I’m running for president of the United States.” Just seconds later, however, he reversed course and bluntly stated, “I’m running for president of the United States because I want to help with family values.”

Digg It!

You mean like the highest divorce rate in the world?

You mean the typical American child having at least 2 dads and brothers and sisters from differend dads.....that kind of values and principals?

Spousal abuse...child abuse.....rampant in America...sorry trolls it's mostly straight couples that are guilty....mom's who stand by while it happens are just as guilty.

99% of all child molesters are members of a two parent family......

This is just gay bashing and it's un-American.

I have several gay friends who have adopted, two couples and one single. I have to say that their children are by far better behaved, better educated and more loving than my hetro friends children are.

Aside for their inability to reproduce with one another, gays have receive an evolutionary advantage of having the qualities and insights of both genders. I imagine having an understanding of both male and female qualities would make one a better parent in teaching one's children tolerance, and understanding.

Reporters should go to an adoptions administrator to find out the financial costs to the state of keeping children in fostercare. That puts the ball in conservatives' low-tax court. Do they want to spend their hard-earned tax dollars on fostercare, or let fosterkids be adopted by gays and singles, and perhaps lessen their own tax burden in the bargain?

And just because a person may desire the physical affection of a member of the same sex does NOT mean their reproductive organs can't fulfill their biological function.

    An excellent question.

I was reading that Rep. Michelle "Syco-Shelly" Bachmann and her hubby (a "Christian grounded counselor" who implies he can "cure the gay") have hosted like 5 million foster children. I thought, "those are some interviews that I'd like to see".

Then I thought about the kind of damage a couple like that could do to a gay child or one with other issues which don't fit their Faith. I'm quite certain they would never bring one to a real mental health professional because, if they had, they would be locked up.

I am consistently terrified by the thought of all the fanatics who DO adopt.

Reading through the comments here, I'm reminded that James Dobson has now or is about to endorse McCain.

A man who is divorced and re-married and has engaged in multiple affairs for the entirety of his married life.

Dobson doesn't care about Christ, but he sure likes winning. I'm so glad we're going to deeply disappoint him this year, but Dobson and his ilk like LOSING almost as much as winning elections. Then they get to pontificate all day long about what victims good Christians are in our Godless society...

May they all burn in Hell for their obvious hypocrisy. Christ didn't know them; he doesn't know them now; and he'll never recognize them as his people. From the way they act, you can only conclude they aren't Christians at all, but stealth religious leaders.

Then again, the human brain's capacity for self-delusion and denial is eclipsed by no other quality that I know of.

Simple way to turn this on McCain. He needs to be pinned against the wall. McCain will only permit those who fill the definition of a traditional two parent family to adopt. Thus, a single woman or a single man would not be able to adopt because they do not fill that role. Pin him down, would he deny them the right to adopt? What about a man or a woman whose spouse dies leaving them without a traditional two parent family? Is he saying that this is not really a fit environment for the child? I would just start running commercials implying, if not making such allegations. let him come back and explain why it is not true - i.e. he is just against gays.

    ______________________________________________________

I don't think anybody has ever said that a child is BETTER off with gays than with traditional parents -- if "all other things [are] equal", being gay in and of itself doesn't make one a better parent. However, many people believe that a child is not necessarily WORSE off with gay parents. Being gay doesn't necessarily make one a worse parent, either.

But this is just your straw man. I believe the point that's on the table, which McCain is opposing, is whether or not gay couples should be permitted to adopt. Do you think that's absurd, too? And if so -- why?

Is America this stupid? Honestly, this man's campaign can only be an intentional joke. Every day he provides yet another damaging sound byte on the latest hot-button issue. His kind used our teevees to convince us Saddam Hussein was the guy. CBS edited this man's lies! (CBS = "See B.S." -Naz) Come on people - the real story is the intended public reaction/distraction - republicans know all too well that they are screwed by association this November. I too long for 1-20-09 but, moving on should not include ignoring those that continue to damage this country.

"Without justice, there can be no peace. He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it." - MLK
-Congress needs be reminded of this!

There has been news online about Diebold-enabled election tampering but corporate news will never go there- so until something is done to stop our next "fantasy election" -(see attached) we need another approach. If Congress is at least willing to hear about Bush/Cheney impeachment, considering all the evidence they heard I think it's only fair that until these 2 leave office we should have daily reports on their activities, agendas, etc.. Right? No more criminals claiming executive priviledge. (Fiengold and Kucinich could be privately briefed -to protect our freedoms, national security or any others stupid neocon claim) Should we really allow these 2 world devastators (and admitted polluters) to continue on unchecked?

    It's a class war.

  96. Gregor Samsa Says:

I am still trying to understand why conservatives like to trot out the "traditional family" talking point when discussing same-sex marriage and gay adoptions.

If I go by their Bible, "traditional marriage" is one man and as many women he can get his hands on. This has been the case for most of human history, and in most cultures. Why, even beacons of conservatism (eg Gingrich) have been known to philander.

The idea of a "traditional marriage" (man & woman who never get divorced, or have sex outside marriage, etc.) is a fairly recent invention and exists mostly in the minds of conservatives, who are trying to lend credence to their agenda by making appeal to a nonexistent tradition.

  102. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

Let McCain lead??? With all the different positions he has taken and the way he spins issues, the only leadership role he is qualified for is to run the carousel at a state fair. Even then, he would probably lie about the cost and the length of the ride.

No I just had no idea idea which ADA you meant as the topic is McCain's shifting position relative to gay adoption.

  142. Zooey Says:

"People with Disabilities = victim act?"

I see how it is. You think you represent ALL people with disabilities.

    Wrong!

The "victim act" comment was special for you, dingleberry.

  143. Nevar Says:

Do you have a dingleberry disability, ADA cont?
Do you have to use the special cushion?

  144. dbadass Says:

Well I think the answer is really quite simple. We will just have to wait and see what happens as per ADA in a Obama administration. Now what specifically has McCain had to say as to the ADA? Also as someone concerned about ADA such as yourself, how do you feel about the Libertarian opposition to it? Lastly do you think apotemnophilia should be recognized as a disability?

  145. backup Says:

I could be wrong, but in the clip, McCain does not oppose gay adoption. Only promotes the idea of 2 parent adoption, which could be a gay couple.

But, he's less than straight forward.

  146. upside99 Says:

ADA seems to be seriously sidetracked and fixated on some OT issue. Gee, I wonder why?

  147. dbadass Says:

In the early 1980's, the Reagan Administration, as part of its general deregulatory effort, attempted to weaken Section 504 and PL 94-142. The Administration's effort was spearheaded by the Commission of Regulatory Relief, chaired by Vice President George Bush. A broad coalition, including people with disabilities, parents, legal and professional advocates, and service providers, organized quickly and was successful in protecting both Section 504 and PL 94-142.

Ronnie was all about helping the "differently abled" Come on ADA cont, At least get your terms correct

  148. Zooey Says:

He's "for" the "family values" (which is designed to reassure the Religious Right) but he's not about to come out (heh) and definitively state that he's against gay people adopting children, because there is some faint, pale chance that some gay person out there might vote for him.

  165. barfly Says:

You will never be like them. This country doesnt have the fortitude. But hey when’s the next iphone coming out? heh.

Since ADA stands for Americans with disabilities, it seems they do have the fortitude, silly.

  166. Zooey Says:

I should have known that, Nevar. ;)

  167. dbadass Says:

    ADA cont:

  168. Nevar Says:

  169. Zooey Says:

    Rigging boy,

No one here hates the disabled. That's just you and your self-loathing.

    You're no progressive. You're just a whiner.

  170. Zooey Says:

Europe might be progressive, dingleberry, but it ain't accessible.

Why do you hate people in wheelchairs?

  171. Nevar Says:

Is that where you're from? What's it like?

  172. upside99 Says:

ADA, you must LOVE McDepends; he is 100% disabled. Are you drawing down a kewl 58 large for your 'disability'?

  173. backup Says:

    That’s very polite of you.

gummitch. you are right. John McCain should support gay adoption. If he can't come out and support it, in fear of losing the anti-gay vote, he's not showing leadership.

John McCain, do you support gay people/couples being able to adopt children or don't you?

  174. upside99 Says:

ADA, why are you so ashamed of your disability? Won't even share with us your situation. But to the point of this thread, are you gay, do you consider that a disability? We don't, so you can open up to us, K?

  175. Zooey Says:

ADA doesn't even know what this site is about. :-D

It's so amusing that you accused barfly of making generalizations.

Jeebus, none of us even knows anyone with a disability!
    (That's sarcasm, ADA)

  176. barfly Says:

If we cant improve the quality of life for people with disabilities I may just vote for McCain to finish this country off so that the non-disableds arent the only ones to go down.

So you hate the disabled so much you'd "finish them off" with a McCain presidency?

And you claim to be disabled?

That's some serious self-loathing you're carting around. You should seek professional help for your low self-esteem issues.

  177. dbadass Says:

I don't think ADA cont is able to answer any questions. I don't think it has anything to do with their "disability" though. Besides this is getting sort of boring...

  178. Saint Augustine Says:

Obviously this troll's disability is mental. What's the chance that it's anger comes from listening to rightwing talk radio and Michael Savages rant about ADD.

Maybe the troll can get it together enought to explain it's interest in the ADA, particularly to whether it is disable or whether the concern is for a loved one or friend.

  179. Nevar Says:

Sometimes slug trails make interesting designs. But after awhile it's just another mess to clean up.

    Ta ta!

  186. backup Says:

    http://www.wecansolveit.org/

    everybody's seen this right?

  187. Nevar Says:

    How about energy collaboration?
It's one thing to be an energy glutton, as the US is at present, seeking to exploit and consume the whole worlds energy resources.
The opposite extreme is to believe we can be energy independent.

Neither are sustainable. Sharing energy and resources across the globe, with a fair share for all, is sustainable.

  188. backup Says:

I think Gore makes these points:

Our dependence on oil has serious economic impacts (700 billion dollars going overseas for oil)

It's causing significant environmental impact (burning carbon)

And, our dependence on the middle east (and others, like Venezuela) for oil, threatens our security.

It seems that there could be a unifying solution that could address all these concerns simultaneously.

I think it should be at the top of the agenda.

  189. Zooey Says:

Seen it, Captain, and have signed it.

Nevar, what are you? Some sort of Commie Pinko? ;)

  190. Resolved Waldron Says:

Here is a question for McCain. A pregnant woman wants her gay friends, married in Massachutes, to adopt her baby upon its birth. If not, she would have an abortion instead. Would you be opposed to the gay couple, legally married in Massachutes, from adopting their friend's baby?

  191. backup Says:

Neither are sustainable. Sharing energy and resources across the globe, with a fair share for all, is sustainable.

I like the idea of switching the U.S. to better, cheaper, cleaner energy alternatives and passing new technologies to the rest of the world.

But, obviously, it's a long way to go from being the biggest user of oil and the largest carbon emitters, to a leadership position on cleaner alternatives.

  192. Nevar Says:

    I'm a dreamer.

  193. backup Says:

Just read an article in the economist.

Someones developed a new solar cell that employs some quantum physics mumbo jumbo and gets 10 times the energy than the previous generation.

More innovation like that and maybe alternatives are plausible answers to our energy needs.

  194. backup Says:

If not, she would have an abortion instead.

    Resolves. It's a hypothetical, but it's a good point.

Conservatives want to limit abortion and encourage adoption. If there are more babies than adopters, conservatives should either commit to adopting the surplus or give on the issue of gay adoption.

  195. dbadass Says:

Well whereas one of my daughters has two godfathers, I suppose I better not go and die or anything crazy like that

  196. Zooey Says:

If there are more babies than adopters, conservatives should either commit to adopting the surplus or give on the issue of gay adoption.

But we know they won't, since it doesn't validate their worldview.

  199. Zooey Says:

    Gummitch,

Have one for me! I watched the Mariners snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yesterday or the day before. I very clearly heard my mom say "Shit." :-D

  200. backup Says:

Captain, you’re making too much sense. Welcome to the Dark Side…

I'm more and more progressive every day. (But, don't get mad at me, when I disagree)

This energy issue is a no brainer.

Everybody hates sending dollars to the middle east for oil.

Reducing carbon emissions would be good for the environment.

And, producing our energy domestically would limit our exposure abroad (and be welcomed by our neighbors around the world).

And gay people should be able to adopt children.

  201. Ms_Joanne Says:

If there are more babies than adopters, conservatives should either commit to adopting the surplus or give on the issue of gay adoption.

Adopt? Conservatives only care about babies BEFORE they are born. Once babies are born, they're on their own.

  202. Hussein McCain Says:

Backup, by the way, from previous thread, you were right, this society has a problem with materialism.

  203. Zooey Says:

    Captain,

I won't get mad at you for disagreeing, if you don't get mad at me for calling you on your bullshit. Agreed? I'd expect you to call me on my bullshit as well.

Do you think those gay parents who are doing the adopting should be allowed to marry? Not civil unions -- real marriage, just like everyone else.

  204. Hussein McCain Says:

please say yes, please say yes, please say yes

  205. Wiscoman Says:

I've lost track, is this his third or fourth position on this issue?

  206. backup Says:

I won’t get mad at you for disagreeing, if you don’t get mad at me for calling you on your bullshit. Agreed? I’d expect you to call me on my bullshit as well.

    Zooey.

I expect that. And, yes, gay people should be able to get married. No difference from heterosexual marriage. And openly serve in the military.

  208. spencers mom Says:

    Ms_Joanne Says:

Adopt? Conservatives only care about babies BEFORE they are born. Once babies are born, they’re on their own.

Yes, Ms Joanne, what I refer to as the "4th trimester" and beyond. Then, these children become useless freeloaders, sucking up tax dollars on needless things like food and healthcare.

Until they're old enough to serve in the military, that is. After which, they again become freeloaders, what with veterans benefits and all...

    PEACE

  209. backup Says:

backup is turning into a damn commie. I need more drinkage!

gummitch. That's my plan. Confuse you, so you drink. Then slip in intelligent design and Reagan on the $10 bill by the time you recover from the hangover. ;)

Glad to see T.P. picked up on a great Bill Moyers journal piece from this evening and sure all of those White House lawyers can sleep better knowing that Darth Cheney isn't on the prowl with shotgun in hand looking for them.....:)

Here's a real off-topic: Veneman and I graduated from rival high schools the same year. For some reason that I haven't been able to pin down in my feeble memory, I recognized her name when Bush appointed her SecAg and it's been driving me nuts that I can't remember how I knew her. I'm pretty sure we didn't hang out with the same people, but there's something . . . just wish I could remember what it was.

Barack Obama, they said, was getting a free ride from those insufferable liberals.

Challenges await Barack Obama at homeJohn McCain supports expansion of Americans With Disabilities Act
John McCain slams Barack Obama for canceling on the troops
Such pronouncements, sorry to say, tend to be wrong since they describe a monolithic media that no longer exists. Information today cascades from countless outlets and channels, from the Huffington Post to Politico.com to CBS News and beyond.

But now there's additional evidence that casts doubt on the bias claims aimed -- with particular venom -- at three broadcast networks.

The Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University, where researchers have tracked network news content for two decades, found that ABC, NBC and CBS were tougher on Obama than on Republican John McCain during the first six weeks of the general-election campaign.

You read it right: tougher on the Democrat.

During the evening news, the majority of statements from reporters and anchors on all three networks are neutral, the center found. And when network news people ventured opinions in recent weeks, 28% of the statements were positive for Obama and 72% negative.

Network reporting also tilted against McCain, but far less dramatically, with 43% of the statements positive and 57% negative, according to the Washington-based media center.

Conservatives have been snarling about the grotesque disparity revealed by another study, the online Tyndall Report, which showed Obama receiving more than twice as much network air time as McCain in the last month and a half. Obama got 166 minutes of coverage in the seven weeks after the end of the primary season, compared with 67 minutes for McCain, according to longtime network-news observer Andrew Tyndall.

    Orphans Shouldn’t Have Gay Parents

Someone needs to teach the judgmental right that it is not the gender, the number of parents or orientation that makes good quality parenting, but the climate, happiness and acceptance one brings to the family. The rigid mind set of some of these religious fanatics screw up the heads of the children.

  228. Bostonian Queer in Dallas Says:

Okay I am going to share this little anecdote about this issue. A close friend adopted the child of her brother who died of a drug overdose, and the mother is in prison for dealing. Fortunately the child has exhibited no signs of in utero drug problems. The adoption was about ten years ago. This little girl was adopted by her TWO MOMMIES. What they have given her is just wonderful: cultural activities such as opera, ballet, museums; an expensive private school education; vacations in Europe and Africa; and on and on. She is excelling in school. She's a great kid with a very bright future.

Okay wingnuts...tell me which door the little girl should have opened. Door A: drug addict parents...Door B: Loving upper middle class Lesbian family offering this child every opportunity in the world.

  229. Above the Clouds Says:

I assume Karl Rove (who's step-father was said to be gay) will weigh in on this issue on FOX any day now. "Conservatives" are pretty pleased with how Rove turned out as a result of his home life, aren't they?

BQinD, many wingnuts are so anti-gay they would rather see a child grow up in an orphanage rather than live in a caring environment with same-sex couples. It's sad, but true.

I hope you like Dallas better than I did! I lived there for allmost nine months, and the "Dalla-tude" was just terrible. I much preffered living in the Austin area, but I've gotta go where the work takes me! I'm lucky in that my partner has stayed with me each move we've made.

TP McCain haters are all worked up into a frenzy over nothing. McCain’s position on adoption hasn’t even changed.

Can you tell us what it actually is? Seems pretty ambiguous to me.

  233. elkc Says:

Apparently being held captive against his wishes, accomplished absolutely nothing when it comes to having compassion for another human being. The old ways of hate and kill are slowly fading away. McCain serves as an important history lesson to our youth of today, of what it was like to be raised in a time, an era that was bolstered by hatreds toward others in which there was the small mindedness, of those who were of incapable of bringing loyalty and love to all peoples despite their religion (or lack of), race, sexuality or noted differences. I hope that during my lifetime that this will be the last time, I will have to witness a presidential candidate use the differences of a fellow American, and boost hatred toward them, as a tool to win political fame and fortune.

You haven't been keeping up, have you?

Sen. McCain used to support Roe v Wade, now he doesn't.

Sen. McCain now supports federal legislation banning abortion after saying that abortion should be left to the states.

He's consistent in that he's stood on both sides of just about every major policy issue being discussed in this election campaign.

This is another example that the "old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri

If you’re referring to Karl Schwarz’ articles, if they are true, how will we ever know unless the news media gets involved without bias? The military under orders not to speak out may never convey Karl Scharz’ expose’. Sesli Sohbet If Cheney was truly involved in 9/11 and protected in some way, then he’s being protected by what may be going on in the Caspian Sea area as well. That pre-9/11 August 10, 2000 article drives the point home to me that Cheney had a vested interest in the oil at the Caspian Sea area (before 9/11).
