The Disabled Veterans of America have revoked Vice President Dick Cheney’s invitation to speak at its convention next month because “the group felt his security demands were Draconian and unreasonable“:
[Cheney's] staff insisted the sick vets be sequestered for two hours before Cheney’s arrival and couldn’t leave until he’d finished talking, officials confirmed. [...]
[V]ets would’ve had to get up “at Oh-dark-30 and try to get breakfast and showered and get their prosthetics on.” Once inside, they “could not leave the meeting room, and the bathrooms are outside,” he said.
Cheney’s security demands “seem more stringent than those of his boss.” “President Bush routinely speaks at events such as large dinners where thousands of guests freely pass back and forth through Secret Service screening portals.”
I'm sure gonna miss that patented sneer, come January.
So glad to see ol' 5 Deferrment Darth still showin' 'em whose boss!
Yee Haw!
(sarcasm off, now)
July 28th, 2008 at 9:52 am"The Disabled Veterans of America have revoked Vice President Dick Cheney..."
Enough said! They should have quit while they were ahead.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:54 amGo f uck yourself, Dick.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:54 amWhat I like about Think Progress is that they folks here can write about Cheney going to visit disabled veterans and completely omit the snark about, you know, Cheney going to visit disabled veterans.
Maybe Cheney has different priorities than the disabled veterans?
July 28th, 2008 at 9:55 amI think we're all in the Last Throes of Cheney.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:55 amAnd isn't "draconian" an appropriate word to go with that photo?
July 28th, 2008 at 9:55 amEvery time you think these Bozos can't Possibly hit a new low, they prove you wrong. Here we have people who've lost limbs serving their country and, quite obviously, they're security risks. WooHoo, somebody's hitting the kool-aid, Way too hard. Kudos to the Disabled Veterans of America for having the courage and common senst to say, thanks, but no thanks pal. Enough is quite enough.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:55 amImpeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!
Good, it's about damned time. People like Cheney must be put in their place and basically told to go "Cheney" themselves. I can't stand arrogant bastards and this guy definitely fits that mold.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:57 amI can't wait to see Cheney's mug shot after he's arrested for war crimes by Belgium or New Hampshire.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:01 amCheney, like most right wingers, is simply scared to death.
His fear has gotten so irrational now that he is afraid of injured, disabled, AMERICAN TROOPS.
What a sad thing to be so insecure and cowardly as to be a Republican.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:01 amAnd the '08 'smile of the year' goes to...Dick Cheney!
July 28th, 2008 at 10:04 amProbably the Most EVIL Veeps in the history of the United States.
Cheney synonymous with Lucifer, he only appears at night in his bunker percolating PNACian plans to destroy Iran and all Muslims.
Xenophobia is his middle name. What a absolute pathetic excuse for a human being.
Anyone that comes near him must be exorcised.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:09 amRantingTommy Says: His fear has gotten so irrational now that he is afraid of injured, disabled, AMERICAN TROOPS.
Considering he made many of them disabled by his illegal invasion of Iraq, he should fear them :)
He showed no common sense when he didn't take care of the very people who are in charge of the guns and bombs...
July 28th, 2008 at 10:09 amWell, to be fair, people do hate him even more than his boss - and for really good reasons.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:13 amO/T: The shooter in Knoxville said the reason why he wanted to kill was because of his hatred for gays and liberals. He’s the newest hero of faux and drugbaugh.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:13 amOk, I'm confused as to why they would want to hear Cheney speak in the first place. What has he ever done for disabled veterans?
July 28th, 2008 at 10:13 amgood point unbelievable
still, he is just another bedwetting right winger that is scared of everything
July 28th, 2008 at 10:15 amLook, I am tired of you liberal, airheads making these foolish and false accusations against Cheney. Of course his security arrangements are greater than those of Bush. Remember who is the real emperor of this country and who is the wooden head puppet.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:15 amWell, he helped make them who they are today!
/snark
July 28th, 2008 at 10:15 amThe vets are probably better off without Darth.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:16 amCheney's demands are more extreme than his his "bosses" because in his own words, he's not really a part of the executive branch so he can make whatever security demands that he feels are right...far right.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:16 amDisabled . . . Dick.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:19 amUmmmmmmm.....Why in the hell would any Vet or Veterans group be interested in a 5 deferrment chickenshit to speak to them at any time to begin with ?
They want inside info on how to be a complete coward ?
July 28th, 2008 at 10:19 amI am with you, Bilbo:
July 28th, 2008 at 10:20 amWhy did they even ask him to speak in the first place? What has he ever done except use them?
"Many of the vets are elderly and left pieces of themselves on foreign battlefields ...."
Cheney is not worthy to stand in front of these veterans.
I want to thank them for their service and for the stand they are now making.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:22 amBilbo Hussein Baggins Says: Ok, I’m confused as to why they would want to hear Cheney speak in the first place. What has he ever done for disabled veterans?
RantingTommy Says: Well, he helped make them who they are today!
How else are they going to get to meet Cheney?
July 28th, 2008 at 10:22 amRantingTommy Says: still, he is just another bedwetting right winger that is scared of everything
Absolutely. It's what defines Conservatism today. I'm often amazed at what frightens these people. Most of the time it is simply their own ignorance creating their irrational fear and nothing reality-based.
Education should be more about making people aware than about making them into obedient little sheep...
July 28th, 2008 at 10:25 amI was at a DAV motorcycle rally this weekend. Disabled Vets could ride on the back of trikes if they wanted to ride along.
I've always found it interesting that the '1%'ers',or bike groups, find a way to support worthy causes and couple that with a way to ride together. Bikers show more empathy and compassion than anyone in the media, for example.
When was the last time you recall a media outlet coordinating and sponsoring a good cause for those in need? Yet, we 'allow' them to judge content & context in our news while shaping our opinions.
Give me Bikers over newshounds anyday...
July 28th, 2008 at 10:25 amPerhaps he's lucid enough to know the depth of hatred Americans have for him.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:26 amJust one more way Mr. Cheney supports our troops.
... but, but, but isn't his lapel pin proof enough of his goodness?
July 28th, 2008 at 10:26 amCheney is truly an evil man. I don't know why the vets invited him in the first place. I don't remember reading any reports where Cheney has been to visit them on a regular basis nor have I read any reports where he has championed their plight in front of Congress.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:28 amMost Evil. VP. Ever.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:30 am...“the group felt his security demands were Draconian and unreasonable“
His fear is understandable, seeing that he's nearly universally hated.
Cheney’s security demands “seem more stringent than those of his boss.” “President Bush routinely speaks at events such as large dinners where thousands of guests freely pass back and forth through Secret Service screening portals.”
Bush is too stupid to be scared.

July 28th, 2008 at 10:33 amMaybe this is what put Darth's bloomers in a twist (today's news):
Buoyed by a new Gallup daily tracking poll showing Barack Obama ahead by a 9-point margin, the latest CNN poll of polls suggests the Illinois senator has doubled his lead over John McCain.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:35 amKeep your eyes protected on January 20th. A bright-lighted spaceship will land to pick up Cheney and his significant other mutant. The will return to an undisclosed, unnamed planet of the solar system.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:39 amkay, I take great encouragement in the current polls that show Obama leading McNumbNuts.
At the same time, polls will not really be relevant until Labor Day. By that time, I expect that they will foretell a total blow-out for Obama. McNumbNuts has not even begun to be tested and he is already bumbling, stumbling, flip-flopping and whining. Before long, he will go ballistic on someone in a public setting and that will be the beginning of the end for the senile old coot.
In the meantime, it is comforting to know that our eight-year national nightmare will soon be over. I just hope that GDumbya and Darth Cheney will not do something really stupid in the next five and a half months. I know they will do regularly stupid things -- I just hope they won't do something really, really stupid.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:44 amIf I were Cheney I too would worry about one, if not all, of the disabled vets in the audience tried to take a shot at me - figuratively as well as literally.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:45 amKay Says:
"Buoyed by a new Gallup daily tracking poll showing Barack Obama ahead by a 9-point margin, the latest CNN poll of polls suggests the Illinois senator has doubled his lead over John McCain."
And those are just the Right-Wing Republicans! They never poll real Americans. When was the last time you were asked to be in a poll?
July 28th, 2008 at 10:45 amIt really puzzles me why any DVA organization would ask this creep to their convention in the first place.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:54 amAs VP, Cheney gets fewer bells and whistles as a "protectee" than the President. Furthermore, USSS manpower is stretched tight with the two additional nominee protectees - and the conventions coming up.
Add to that Cheney's reputed paranoia (author Jane Mayer's new book describes how Cheney told Rice, Powell et al in a meeting he thought he could have "infected" them with some bio agent) and that's what you get.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:55 amBoy, I wish Cheney and Bush would go on a drunken hunting trip and just do us all a favor and have bad aim.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:58 amThe fear of assassination is strong within this one, little grasshopper.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:58 amfrom the link:
'Cheney has visited hospitalized wounded warriors and invited Walter Reed Army Medical Center patients for fly-fishing lessons around his swimming pool.'
July 28th, 2008 at 11:05 amI've never understood why the Bushistas have been in such a hurry to piss off veterans (disabled and otherwise).
Seems like if you were in that position, it would be against your best interests to anger people who are trained killers
July 28th, 2008 at 11:09 amWhy do they need such stringent security? Didn't their policies make the world safer?
July 28th, 2008 at 11:12 amIs he for real? Does he know something that we don't know?
And mcchimpy is lying about Sen. Obama not visiting our troops while dickhead is scared of wounded soldiers.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:13 amZimzone Says:
Give me Bikers over newshounds anyday…
I am a veteran and a biker. I am always riding for some benefit, whether its the yearly Teddy Bear run for the EMS/Cops, kid charity or Veteran Benefit.
My Bike club is always involved in some charity.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:32 amThe veterans told Dick to go Cheney himself. Priceless.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:37 amOnce inside, they “could not leave the meeting room, and the bathrooms are outside,” he said.
Wow, thats unreasonable. I would have to run to the bathroom just to puke after seeing Cheney.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:40 amCheney’s security demands “seem more stringent than those of his boss.”
Oh come on now. We all know who the real "boss" in this administration is, and it ain't the guy with the four letter word for a last name!
July 28th, 2008 at 12:00 pmHe's a marked man even among his "own", and he damn well knows it.
CHICKENSHIT PUSSY.
July 28th, 2008 at 12:02 pmIt's good to know that he's afraid. Just in case his own mind is the only justice he ever faces.
July 28th, 2008 at 12:07 pmSo, cheney's staffers still think our military are brainwashed? Even tho their news is censored our vets are much more knowledgeable than bootlicking conservatives.
July 28th, 2008 at 12:15 pmI would say Darth was paranoid ........ except there ARE a lot of people that want to do him harm.
And some actually might be disabled Vets who were put in Harm's way for no reason other than ego and greed, by this AssKlown!
July 28th, 2008 at 12:20 pmSo the coward in ViceChief is askeert one of the vets may remove his prosthesis and smack the Dickless one upside the head??
July 28th, 2008 at 12:26 pmCheney spokesperson Megan Mitchell also said that she was puzzled by the group's allegations
Let's see... who should we believe: Cheney, or the veterans group?
Such a tough choice.
/sarc off
July 28th, 2008 at 1:03 pmCaption contest: "Growl!"
July 28th, 2008 at 1:16 pmCheney spokesperson Megan Mitchell also said that she was puzzled by the group's allegations since security arrangements are not finalized until a few weeks before the event and "we would never want any disabled vet to be put out on our account, that just wouldn't happen."
Too many angry veterans armed with prosthetics limbs, isn't? Well, Cheney, looks as if they've not lost their balls, while your 5 defermements tell a very different history about you.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:25 pmThere was a time when we arrested, prosecuted, sometimes imprisoned and occasionally would hang by the neck until dead war profiteers.
Our standards in oversight and prosecution has slipped to the point of being non-existent.
Cheney has achieved the distinction of being a draft-dodger AND war profiteer.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:33 pmWell done, Madame Karma!! Bite him HARDER, please. He deserves it.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:52 pmwhy does dickhead cheney hate the troops?
July 28th, 2008 at 2:02 pmCheney's demands were really despicable- " I don't give a damn if they hobble or walk into walls , i want all of them searched and their party affiliation checked out "
July 28th, 2008 at 3:20 pmAnd the check the amputees , they could be hiding protest signs " .
At least the people in Birmingham, Alabama have both the bladder and money to show proper fealty to his Cheneyness:
http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/07/cheney_coming_to_birmingham_au.html
$2,000 gets attendees a picture with the great curser.
July 28th, 2008 at 6:30 pmAnd this is the only reason they could find to revoke?
Too bad. It would have been better if they had never invited him to speak. If they had censored him for lying about the war, for helping to shred the Constitution they fought for. Or for all the thousand sins of this corrupt man. And for the least of his sins, being a bad shot with a gun.
Not only would they check your political affiliations but more. And they are surprised by this? Where have these people been for the last eight years?
I would rather have my nails ripped out then listen to this man. Oops! I forgot, legally they can now rip my nails out. This man gives me the creeps. It will be nice when he follows Haliburton to Dubai. Sorry we cannot get him before a judge.
July 28th, 2008 at 7:49 pmSomebody with a gun please just kill this fuking piece of shit of a human. Every cop and every armed service member should have this fukers face as the ENEMY #1. And SHOOT HIM ON SIGHT.
July 29th, 2008 at 1:23 am
