Conservative pundit Robert Novak was admitted yesterday to a Boston hospital where he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Novak said in a written statement:
On Sunday, July 27, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I have been admitted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where doctors will soon begin appropriate treatment.
I will be suspending my journalistic work for an indefinite but, God willing, not too lengthy period.
Novak, 77, made headlines last week when he was “cited by police after he hit a pedestrian with his black Corvette in downtown Washington, D.C.” Novak said at the time, “I didn’t know I hit anybody.”
Not going there…
July 28th, 2008 at 1:06 pmNo gloating. The tumor might be the reason he hit that guy, since it can affect one’s vision.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:07 pmWise choice, young Master Llama
July 28th, 2008 at 1:07 pmI think that Novak is a traitor for the Plame mess, but it is sad to hear such dire news. No one should have to suffer with that kind of affliction, no matter what their politics are.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:09 pmLook, out of all the public figures who have made their marks in the past eight years, I think Robert Novak is one of the most odious. Right up there in Dick Cheney territory.
But I’m not going to say he deserved this diagnosis or that it’s any kind of cosmic payback.
That’s not much different than John Hagee saying Katrina hit New Orleans because of a gay pride parade.
I have no sympathy for him, but I have no joy either. I think anyone who celebrates news like this should take a little personal inventory.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:10 pmI hope he has a speedy recovery. Give the political disagreements a rest until then.

I had no idea he was 77. What is it with these pundits?
Why can’t they ever retire?
Pat Buchanon’s another one that doesn’t know when it’s time.
Pat’s brain is still residing in 1992.
Against stronger impulses, I will give the benefit of the doubt and assume he really does have a brain tumor.
If he does, I wish him a speedy recovery or worst case scenario, as painless a death as possible.
A friend of mine just died from a brain tumor he had been battling for 6 years.
It is a horrible way to die.
As progressives, liberals, independents…actually FU(K the politics of it, as HUMAN BEINGS with EMPATHY and COMPASSION, we should not wish this even on those we despise the most.
No offense to the posters here that I have (admittedly, and unintentionally) called out on that, but it makes us no better than Novak, Snow, et al when we pull this crap. It needs to stop.
I am not a concern troll, though I sound like it right now, as most of you know.

July 28th, 2008 at 1:31 pmSweetheart of a fellow. Since he is part of the group that have committed war crimes for profit, I can’t feel for him. I believe he has given up his right to humanity by denying it to others.
I become kind of tired of this infinite loop, where we lecture each other on proper etiquettte toward traitors when they become sick or die. (I don’t think Tim Russert was a traitor, by the way.)
Novak didn’t care when the man he rammed became seriously injured. In fact, he attempted to glorify himself by claiming he wouldn’t challenge his $50 ticket.
If we could reverse this trend of the good dying young, that would be wonderful for our democracy.
We’re not traitors. Why should we become concerned when one is dealt a blow for the pain he inflicts on others? Pointing that out isn’t bad karma.

No gloating. The tumor might be the reason he hit that guy, since it can affect one’s vision.
While I can agree that it may have effected his vision, I do not except that he didn’t feel the impact of hitting someone. As I said last week, anyone who drives a vette knows that you feel EVERYTHING you hit in a vette. They are to low to the ground not to.
Having said that, I do wish him a speedy recover. Brain tumors are nasty things and the brain is a very sensitive area to be messing around in.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:41 pmI confess that when I read the news about Novak’s brain tumor, the unworthy thought did cross my mind that perhaps – just perhaps – it was a convenient way for him to escape a hit-and-run charge, but then I decided not to believe that anyone could be that …what? Evil? Twisted?
And, having had a (benign) brain tumor myself (from which I have completely recovered), well, it isn’t any fun. It does allow for the possibility that he was indeed unable to see the man he hit, although I will say that a symptom *that* severe would have not occurred suddenly, but over a long period of time – a symptom he may have ignored.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:41 pmIf you want to be seen as the “better” of two groups, you don’t follow the other group’s lead and insult the person who is sick. Who cares if random Republican sites also had people saying nasty things about Kennedy?
There’s the high road and the low road. That’s just joining them on the low road. In that sense, there’s not much of a difference.
The “they did it first!” excuse only goes so far and, honestly, it’s thrown out there way too much on a lot of sites. That logical effectively excuses anything because there will always be someone else out there starting something.

So long as you don’t go out of your way to bring about a tumor (inevitable if you live long enough…for instance, if you are not felled by a HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER, or a heart attack from all the Big Macs you wolf, etc, then you are going to get cancer) you have nothing to feel shame about by feeling what you actually do (but are scared to voice): schadenfreund.

Michael Savage Mocks Kennedy Cancer
James Joyner | Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Right wing shock jock Michael Savage had fun at the expense of Teddy Kennedy while announcing that the senator had being diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Following the announcement that Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage opened his May 20 show by interspersing audio of Kennedy singing “Ay Jalisco No Te Rajes” with clips of news reporters discussing Kennedy’s diagnosis and audio from the 1990 film Kindergarten Cop in which Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character says, “It’s not a tumor.” Later, Savage played the Dead Kennedys song “California Über Alles” after stating: “The poor guy’s been suffering for years, you know? Unfairly he’s been accused of alcoholism, but we see now that it was something much more deep-seated. And so, to cut this out in some respect for Ted Kennedy, here’s a tune coming at you from the Dead Kennedys. Go ahead and play it, please.”
After reading from the lyrics of “California Über Alles,” Savage said, “No gloating today, no laughter, all serious. You don’t joke about a man’s cancer. I do it, but I won’t do it today; it’s something I will not do.” At one point in the program, he told a caller, “You know I’m playing the Dead Kennedys not to mock Ted Kennedy. It’s just appropriate, that’s all.”
While there’s no need to pretend to like a public figure with whom you have strong political disagreements — and in the case of Kennedy, perhaps serious qualms about his morality as well — it’s just in really poor taste to make fun of the fact that he’s likely dying. And to do so while claiming you won’t do it is beyond tacky.
Need I say more?
July 28th, 2008 at 2:17 pmStrange how the least God abiding people always draw on God for their own needs. The only good thing I can say about cheney he doesn’t pretend to be a religous person, he likes being evil and thumbs his nose at everyone.
July 28th, 2008 at 2:17 pmAnd tanq while pointing the finger at Kennedy take alook at laura bush who killed her classmate and couldn’t bother to attend the funeral.
My brother died of a brain tumor. I wish Bob Novak a sppedy recovery, or at least a death without the deterioration and agony he suffered.
I only wish that his fellow wingnuts and pundits might look on Novak’s case and realize that access to the corridors of power and insider influence mean exactly nothing.
In the end, it’s just you in that bed.
July 28th, 2008 at 2:18 pmLee Attwater – rove’s mentor for dirty tricks, dying of cancer actually did speak of remorse for behaving less than human…perhaps novak will find a conscience as well. Amazing that it takes a personal crisis to become part of the human race.

“The immediate goal is to make sure there are more people on private insurance plans. I mean, people have access to health care in America. After all, you just go to an emergency room

Sorry about your mother, JIm, but several people on this thread, myself included, made points of expressing no joy or celebration for this diagnosis.
Yet your post sounded like you condemned everyone who posts here.
See how that makes you sound like a troll? (Not that the rest of your body of work here does not support that judgment.)
July 28th, 2008 at 4:30 pmNo one made excuses. But you simply said, “You people are sad and pathetic.”
Pretty straightforward. No indication whether you were criticizing those who were “boorish” or everyone who posts here. Given your dismissive “I’m not going to keep score” in this post, it sounds like you are criticizing everyone.
If so, you’re a dick, and you seem eager to use this thread as an opportunity to make your partisan points seem stronger by grounding them in moral outrage. If you really cared about “boorish behavior” then you would have criticized the boorish behavior, instead of calling everyone “sad and pathetic.”
Whatever. I gave you a few moments’ energy as if your were a real human being. I think I’ll go back to treating you as your posts deserve — as a troll, and not a particularly bright one at that.
Good day to you.

July 28th, 2008 at 5:02 pmI’m sorry, but this sounds like an excuse for hit and run charges! I hope it’s not, and Lord forgive me for my evil thoughts, but though I think no one should have to suffer with a brain tumor, Robert Novak definitely qualifies. I knew something was wrong with his brain, it just took time to find out. But, I still think it’s going to be his defense in his hit and run trial.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:21 pmI would probably feel something for another human being with a diagnosis like this. But a part of me just can’t. Some might say what goes around comes around. If only a few more in the higher end of the administration would only keep their cell phones strapped to their heads.
July 28th, 2008 at 7:07 pmI will grant that the brain tumor may have impaired his vision in the hit and run accident. July 29th, 2008 at 9:36 ami am so appalled that so many on this website can wish so much ill will on this man who is battling cancer. radical republican or not, the man is about to undergo a most brutal fight, and i know first hand, having had a brain tumor myself senior year of high school. having completely lost my vision for lengthy time periods, having had cognitive difficulties that can only be fully explained by experiencing them, and having had craniotomy to remove this cancer form my brain, i can only wish him well. i am 17, i did not wish this cancer on me, nor would i wish it on anyone else. This blog’s comments represent the extreme hatred of the radical left, and they minimize the fight of other cancer patients, and that is unforgivable.
