Tenn. church shooter angry at ‘liberals and gays.’

Knoxville police say that the man who shot two people to death inside a Tennessee Unitarian church yesterday “was frustrated at being unable to find a job and blamed liberals and gays” in an angry letter detailing his violent plans. Authorities said they believed the suspect chose a Unitarian church “because of ’some publicity in the recent past regarding its liberal stance on things.’”

And so he did the right wing, intolerant, Christian thing and killed people.

On the one hand, the gunman was a man depressed by unemployment and distrustful of religion.

On the other hand, he hated liberals and gays.

    Tough call for the D-Bag.

Think the UU Church will respond similar to the Jewish Community after a mentally ill Muslim killed one and wounded five in Seattle? Retired IDF vets now train a paramilitary force in the Catskills to respond to such situation. My guess is the Unitarian Universalist Church will take a drastically different approach.

While not all conservative Christians would do such heinous deeds, the fact that Ann Coulter is trying to twist the facts and blame it on liberals shows that she is politicizing the deaths of these congregation members…

It’s time to turn away from this intolerant brand of religion and expose it for what it is…hate masquerading in the form of religion…

The saddest irony to me is that the shooter hated liberals and reportedly was angry because he received notice that his food stamps were being cut off. Why subject people to crime when education, jobs, housing, an open political process can prevent all of that? Do you want to be a victim of crime? No, you want others to be victims of crime so you can scream “TOUGH ON CRIME!!! YEEE HAAW!!!” and vote for Fred Thompson. We take the stance of preventing crime.

  53. gummitch says:

    Here you go, troll:

If disenfranchised felons had been allowed to vote, they would have swung the 2000 presidential race to Al Gore, according to a national study Republicans are touting in their fight to overturn Christine Gregoire’s victory in last fall’s governor’s race.

The study posits that since racial minorities and the poor – groups that tend to vote for Democrats– make up a disproportionate number of felons, a hypothetical felon voting bloc would be so overwhelmingly Democratic it could swing national and statewide elections.

Notice “posits”. It’s entirely speculative. And valid?

Todd Donovan, a political science professor at Western Washington University who’s not involved in the case, said the national study is based too narrowly on race and is not applicable in Washington, where racial minorities make up a lower percentage of the felon population than in other states.

The study’s “hypothetical felon doesn’t really exist in most places in Washington. We just don’t fit that. We’re not in Georgia,” Donovan said.

In other words, the study essentially suggests that since African-Americans and poor people make up the majority of felons, and because African-Americans and poor people tend to vote Democratic, “prisons are full of Liberals.” It’s the sort of leap that only a true wingnut could make.

And it’s a great claim to make because most felons are disenfranchised–therefore there will never be a study of actual voting records to refute the claim.

I just posted two links to two different studies that established that nearly 75% of felons would have voted Democratic, and those posts are “awaiting moderation.” What a surprise.

Almost everyone here has had posts stalled “awaiting moderation” and they all seem to be raced to the use of certain bizarrely inappropriate words, according to the TP filter. Specifically, words like the correctly-spelled “anlyze” or “anlysis”.

Now, as for your claim that nearly 75% of felons would have voted Democratic that says nothing about how many of them are “liberals” which was your original, spurious claim.

“Liberal” connotes a specific political and social belief system that some Democrats accept and many don’t. It also implies a certain level of activism that most voters don’t possess, sadly.

Thus, assuming it’s accurate, your claim that nearly 75% of felons would have voted Democratic says nothing about how many liberals are in prisons.

It does, however, say a great deal about how many people who have been to prison can recognize the impact of Republican “punish first, rehabilitate never” policies on people and society.

African-American and poor people make up the majority of felons.

African-American and poor people tend to vote Democratic.

74% of felons would vote Democratic if given the chance.

    Democrats tend to be Liberals.

Therefore, prisons are full of Liberals.

That is why Democrats keep fighting for voting rights for felons. With the felon vote, the statistics show that they would have won every Presidential election from 1974 on.

You forgot to put the quote marks around “logic.”

You have no citation for your “74%” figure, therefore everything that follows is unsubstantiated.

You compound your error with your statement conflating Democrats and Liberals, as Ralph has tried to explain to you. Therfore, everything that follows is unsubstantiated.

    OIMM…

no blog? then I guess the blog that you linked your moniker to has nothing to do with you? And why aren’t you complaining about that supposedly unassociated site’s lack of debate?

  88. beltman713 says:

But he’s OK with murderers apparently.

  89. BestGovEmp says:

A funny thought to ponder. Entertainers “rappers” were hauled in front of Congress to testify about the role their lyrics play in public affairs. How suggestions of violence and murder in their lyrics actually increased these actions in reality.

How come all the hate spewing right wing radio hosts, t.v. hosts, bloggers etc aren’t being hauled in front of Congress to examine how their hatred is changing our publiv affairs.

We hold music labels and artists responsible for many crimes, why can’t we start holding BillO and the like accountable for instances like these?

  90. RandomChaos says:

    OIMM,
Why did you remove the link to your blog COWARD!
    POS Troll

  91. McWars says:

Staying current in order to stay intellectually alive is crucial in academia, RU. I haven’t sworn off teaching someday because of my love of Higher Ed. (I may seek to work up to a doctoral in Accounting. My interest in the field combined with the increase in student demand and professors retiring in droves makes it a good idea. The same demand exists for CS professors.)

I started out at a CC and it was a very interesting General Ed experience. Most of my instructors taught part-time as well, while teaching dual-enrollment English at the high school and chairing the math department, as well as teaching AP courses and serving on the faculty at the local four-year university. It’s easy to find diversity at CCs.

  92. curious says:

God help us, we would not want a liberal stance on things. Would we? Afer all anyone can see how successful the conservatives have been. Can anyone say RUINED COUNTRY?

You mean he could not find a job? How is that possible in such a wonderful economy? He should have prayed harder. Or perhaps gone to one of Bush’s faith based organizations. Or perhaps his home is foreclosed. Or his bank has gone under. The country is ripe with endless possibilities with such sterling leadership. At the very least he could try to get a job out of the country, where they have been outsourced by free trade deals. Of course religion the way it is practiced now in America is pretty selfish and grim. He might have had to pass a litmus test.

Whatever. He is just another poor, deluded, wacked out conservative. He is blaming the wrong party. But at least in jail he will have time to reflect. His food and housing will be paid. He will get all the things he does not have now. A guaranteed place to live and benefits.

And just reflect on this. Only two people had to die so he could make his statement.

  93. Luis M says:

Guys… one question. And this I ask seriously.

Over there in the USA, other than liberal and conservatives, what other groups are there? Undecided, libertarians, who else?

All of the above, and more…That’s the problem I see with the major ‘two party’ system. If you belong to one of the lesser known groups, you ultimately have to decide among the 2 or 3 parties, otherwise you run the risk of throwing your vote away on a candidate who cannot win, or siding with the best of the leftover choices.

In America, it seems all 300 million citizens must funnel their votes through 1 of 3 parties.

How about ‘None of the Above’?

I think that, after two terms of “the uniter”, America is divided between “conservative” and “the opposition”. For all the rhetoric, the “opposition” is still a diverse group. And I’ve yet to hear a comprehensive definition of “liberal”.

  96. 1Watt says:

Inside the house, officers found “Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder” by radio talk show host Michael Savage, “Let Freedom Ring” by talk show host Sean Hannity, and “The O’Reilly Factor,” by television talk show host Bill O’Reilly.

The shotgun-wielding suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was motivated by a hatred of “the liberal movement,” and he planned to shoot until police shot him, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said this morning.

    any good lawyers out there?

  97. pete says:

The local Reichradio nutbags are blaming the whole thing on “secularism”. They really think that “secularism” makes people shoot up churches!

We have always been at war with Eastasia.

I’m sure the “liberal media” will pursue them as relentlessly as Heavy Metal and Rap musicians are pursued when one of their fans goes around the bend.

    Won’t they?

  99. Evil Spaniard says:

Will the books of mAnn Coulter, Savage, etc. display a label reading “Explicit Idiocy”?

  100. blue state bob says:

Another pussy, lazy right wing loser who is too dumb to see it is the Republicans who are in power and have ruined this economy and then is too much of a complete coward to just eat his own gun and needs to kill other people. Sounds like a typical Republican to me, but the troll somehow equates this POS as a liberal. You just can’t cure stupid and cowardice.

If “tits” can earn a warning label on a cd, why not? I’m as much for free speech as anyone but, free speech doesn’t cover inciting crimes.

  104. JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin says:

Police found right-wing political books, brass knuckles, empty shotgun shell boxes and a handgun in the Powell home of a man who said he attacked a church in order to kill liberals “who are ruining the country,” court records show.

Knoxville police Sunday evening searched the Levy Drive home of Jim David Adkisson after he allegedly entered the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church and killed two people and wounded six others during the presentation of a children’s musical.

The GOP controls the media, the White House, the Supreme Court, and (until a year ago) the Congress, and this POS blames liberals?

O’Reilly and Hannity probably think this guy is a hero, and that he shot the wrong people.

  105. ForTruth says:

This is just the first in many more to come. We are going to see lots of conservative types lose it and either kill themselves, others, or both.

When an ingrained belief system is shattered, in combination with poor problem solving skills, you have a melt down.

One less Goper in the voting pool. Good.

Our prisons are full of Liberals. That’s why Democrats keep pushing for “Felon Voting Rights.”

You DO know you are a liar and a fool dont you? I mean it hasnt escaped your notice you are a complete and utter moron has it? Got any evidence that the prisons are full of predominatly liberals? No? Imagine my suprise, you can show yourself out in disgrace. Felons LOSE their voting rights in most states they are reinstated AFTER they do their sentence including probation that is AFTER they have paid their debt to society. I know of NO ONE that is advocating putting voting booths into prisons.

My GOD you an ignorant piece of garbage. He was unemployed armed inbred and incredibly stupid sounds like a conservative to me. I dont know that many liberals that shoot up churches because they are mad at liberals. Then again I am not as brainwashed and braindead as you obviously are.

Obviously, we need to start profiling middle-aged white guys now. Will a “watch list” be set up for them?

  112. Keith says:

Leading causes of crime are poverty and hopelessness. People who have been subjugated into the lower class for 400 years are not exactly going to vote for the status quo. They are not exactly going to vote for tax breaks for the rich and corporate welfare. They are not exactly going to vote for “three strikes and you’re out”.
It is illegal for billionaires to be vagrants, but somehow they don’t commit this crime. It’s the golden rule—those with the gold make the rules.

  113. Keith says:

Above I was talking about “prisoners are liberals”—not the church shooter.

  115. ucsbclassics53 says:

This is the double standard in POLITICAL discourse today…A right-wing whackjob like this murderer found with conservative books at home is only an exception, but when one liberal misspeaks something, then the conservatives and wingnuts get to paint every liberal with a broadbrush…

  116. naldo says:

Isn’t Adkisson just another frustrated, small town yokel clinging to his bible and his guns?

And they said Obama was wrong for pointing out the same thing?

  117. KayInMaine says:

I’m thinking the reason why most prisoners would vote Democratic upon leaving prison is because they’ve had time to think about their lives and realize how stupid they were to be a right wing knuckledragging neocon prior to entering prison.

    Agree?

  118. bwindrip says:

This incident is the tragic fruit of the right-wing tactic of programming the disappearing middle class to believe that all their hardship can be blamed on a particular group, such as immigrants, or non-whites, or liberals.

The perpetrator in this case is ill, and needs our compassion.

But every person who participated in his programming needs to be disemboweled.
