Knoxville police say that the man who shot two people to death inside a Tennessee Unitarian church yesterday “was frustrated at being unable to find a job and blamed liberals and gays” in an angry letter detailing his violent plans. Authorities said they believed the suspect chose a Unitarian church “because of ’some publicity in the recent past regarding its liberal stance on things.’”
Tenn. church shooter angry at ‘liberals and gays.’
And so he did the right wing, intolerant, Christian thing and killed people.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:00 pmI’ll be interested to see Daryll’s reaction to this story.
On the one hand, the gunman was a man depressed by unemployment and distrustful of religion.
On the other hand, he hated liberals and gays.
Tough call for the D-Bag.

July 28th, 2008 at 5:08 pmThink the UU Church will respond similar to the Jewish Community after a mentally ill Muslim killed one and wounded five in Seattle? Retired IDF vets now train a paramilitary force in the Catskills to respond to such situation. My guess is the Unitarian Universalist Church will take a drastically different approach.

July 28th, 2008 at 5:08 pmSeriously? That would be an act to see. Of course, if one of the ground rules of your act is that objective reality is to be disregarded, it kinda makes it easier.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:08 pmWhile not all conservative Christians would do such heinous deeds, the fact that Ann Coulter is trying to twist the facts and blame it on liberals shows that she is politicizing the deaths of these congregation members…
It’s time to turn away from this intolerant brand of religion and expose it for what it is…hate masquerading in the form of religion…
Triplekick 2, I would like to see your take on this…because you claimed that we are a hate group, in fact the worst kind the country’s ever known…
July 28th, 2008 at 5:09 pmMichael Weiner Savage – is that you? Just because you got yanked off the air in Cleveland is no reason to shoot up a church.

July 28th, 2008 at 5:18 pmSo is Jim Wilke just throwing out non-sequiters now?
That’s all he’s got?
July 28th, 2008 at 5:18 pmJim Wilke Says:
CAPAF seeks to provide a forum that advances progressive ideas and policies.
So? Whats the price of eggs in Armpit Alabama?
July 28th, 2008 at 5:19 pmIsn’t it amazing that when something is posted on TP that Jim can’t argue with, he immediately says he doesn’t see how whatever it is “advances progressive ideas and policies”.
One might argue that anything that affects the human condition should be discussed if one is a true progressive.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:22 pmOf course you wouldn’t, Jimboy.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:24 pmThe saddest irony to me is that the shooter hated liberals and reportedly was angry because he received notice that his food stamps were being cut off. He was about to lose benefits he received from a social program that exists only because of liberal thought so he attacked a church he associated with liberal thought.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:24 pmJim Wilke Says:
I just don’t see how discussing one demented lunatic “advances progressive ideas and policies.”
Well, this demented lunatic stands for the very same things you and the rest of your GOP stand for. I can see where you would want to limit the publicity of this type of horrible attack, but it is part and parcel of your intolerant party. What makes me grateful is that we have few of these attacks. As the GOP brand dies, I would expect more ‘bitterness’ from the low information types on the right side.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:26 pmJim Wilke Says:
I just don’t see how discussing one demented lunatic “advances progressive ideas and policies.”
Not surprising. You don’t see much, do you?
The shooter “blamed liberals and gays”. How do you suppose this notion got into his twisted brain? Nothing to do with years of indoctrination from squibs like Limbaugh, O’Reilly and Coulter?
July 28th, 2008 at 5:27 pmHe said the state recently sent a letter to Adkisson telling him food stamps he had been receiving would be reduced or eliminated.
Yup, blame those damn liberals!
July 28th, 2008 at 5:27 pmJimmy, that man is your spiritual twin brother.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:30 pmThis is no way unique. Most conservative blowhards who hate Libruls and the guberment are or have been on the dole themsleves. Look at Mouse Limburgh. I once sat and listen to an idiot just rip welfare recipients a new one and not once did I bring up the fact that he himself was on disability.

Indeed. The wingers are already claiming that the shooter had to be a liberal because the shooting took place in a church. A stupid argument made even more stupid because it was a Unitarian church.

Then they’ll point out that radical religious views breed hate and violence. Won’t they?

Jim Wilke’s notion of progress is epitomized by his passion for NASCAR “oval” racing:
a herd headed in one direction only that endlessly retraces its course for as long as it takes with as much noise as and manufactured excitement possible and the least amount of effort resulting in a winner utterly indistinguishable from the rest of the pack.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:42 pmHey, where’s Darrly and Trippldickey? This post is right up their alley. Oh, guess they just can’t come up with a good enough excuse to explain away MURDER.
And there you have it folks, thanks to the l.ikes of right wing radio, we have flag sucking half wits murdering people in church. All because they are supposedly “liberal”.
In a bygone era, an age where reason and common sense ruled, these rabblerousers, purveyors of ignorance and hate, wouldn’t have ever seen the light of day
July 28th, 2008 at 5:44 pmIf that man were smart enough, he’d log in here to advocate applying for benefits directly with the federal government, in the mail or online, and I would certainly agree with him. I’m not a believer in the states managing most federal programs. Too many ideologies between the states, especially the red ones, that could unfairly bias recipient decisions.
But as too many know, “personal responsibility” means blaming liberals and allowing the real culprits to get away scott-free.
If everyone knew how to vote in their best interests, Ronald Reagan’s political resume would have ended as Governor of California.

Nope. I got it spot on. No equivocation, no hesitation. Jimbo, I read your words. I understand your allegiance to the GOP is forever and unwavering – I know that. We all do.
You are hanging onto a sinking ship. I mean, even rats know when to jump so they can save themselves. Look how many Bush administration rats have already seen the benefit in survival, but not you. Your allegiance goes to your core.

But it’s OK to say “our prisons are full of liberals.” That isn’t too broad a brush? Maybe you’d like to cite some statistics to prove your contention about Liberals in prison?

And if people getting out of people vote democratic, it’s not because we’re known to love criminals. It’s because there’s no point of depriving anybody, ex-offender or not, as if to push them into recidivism.
Why subject people to crime when education, jobs, housing, an open political process can prevent all of that? Do you want to be a victim of crime? No, you want others to be victims of crime so you can scream “TOUGH ON CRIME!!! YEEE HAAW!!!” and vote for Fred Thompson. We take the stance of preventing crime.

Nothing that the movers and shakers of the GOP and it;s minions has turned out to be true, whilst all the warnings and protestations of the liberals and Democrats have come irrefutably to pass.

July 28th, 2008 at 6:04 pmHere you go, troll:
Notice “posits”. It’s entirely speculative. And valid?
In other words, the study essentially suggests that since African-Americans and poor people make up the majority of felons, and because African-Americans and poor people tend to vote Democratic, “prisons are full of Liberals.” It’s the sort of leap that only a true wingnut could make.
And it’s a great claim to make because most felons are disenfranchised–therefore there will never be a study of actual voting records to refute the claim.

July 28th, 2008 at 6:06 pmAlmost everyone here has had posts stalled “awaiting moderation” and they all seem to be raced to the use of certain bizarrely inappropriate words, according to the TP filter. Specifically, words like the correctly-spelled “anlyze” or “anlysis”.
Now, as for your claim that nearly 75% of felons would have voted Democratic that says nothing about how many of them are “liberals” which was your original, spurious claim.
“Liberal” connotes a specific political and social belief system that some Democrats accept and many don’t. It also implies a certain level of activism that most voters don’t possess, sadly.
Thus, assuming it’s accurate, your claim that nearly 75% of felons would have voted Democratic says nothing about how many liberals are in prisons.
It does, however, say a great deal about how many people who have been to prison can recognize the impact of Republican “punish first, rehabilitate never” policies on people and society.

July 28th, 2008 at 6:16 pmA right sider trying to use logic…That is a stretch.
Logically, you wouldn’t go to a progressive site and piss into a fan. But here you are, all wet…..
July 28th, 2008 at 6:18 pmAnswer me, troll. If republicans offer criminals no incentive upon eligibility for release to clean up their act back in society, why would they vote to force themselves back behind bars? I’m only speaking for former inmates who care to make something of themselves upon release.

He was unemployed and blaming others.
So was Timothy McVeigh.
July 28th, 2008 at 6:23 pmSo here’s the logic:
African-American and poor people make up the majority of felons.
African-American and poor people tend to vote Democratic.
74% of felons would vote Democratic if given the chance.
Democrats tend to be Liberals.
Therefore, prisons are full of Liberals.
That is why Democrats keep fighting for voting rights for felons. With the felon vote, the statistics show that they would have won every Presidential election from 1974 on.
You forgot to put the quote marks around “logic.”
You have no citation for your “74%” figure, therefore everything that follows is unsubstantiated.
You compound your error with your statement conflating Democrats and Liberals, as Ralph has tried to explain to you. Therfore, everything that follows is unsubstantiated.
You have provided NO evidence that your conclusion is true, but have simply repeated a slur that issued from the Republicans.
But you won’t understand this, either, and will simply post another unsubstantiated and/or unrelated link to an opinion piece.

How come all the hate spewing right wing radio hosts, t.v. hosts, bloggers etc aren’t being hauled in front of Congress to examine how their hatred is changing our publiv affairs.
We hold music labels and artists responsible for many crimes, why can’t we start holding BillO and the like accountable for instances like these?

Staying current in order to stay intellectually alive is crucial in academia, RU. I haven’t sworn off teaching someday because of my love of Higher Ed. (I may seek to work up to a doctoral in Accounting. My interest in the field combined with the increase in student demand and professors retiring in droves makes it a good idea. The same demand exists for CS professors.)
I started out at a CC and it was a very interesting General Ed experience. Most of my instructors taught part-time as well, while teaching dual-enrollment English at the high school and chairing the math department, as well as teaching AP courses and serving on the faculty at the local four-year university. It’s easy to find diversity at CCs.
July 28th, 2008 at 7:00 pmGod help us, we would not want a liberal stance on things. Would we? Afer all anyone can see how successful the conservatives have been. Can anyone say RUINED COUNTRY?
You mean he could not find a job? How is that possible in such a wonderful economy? He should have prayed harder. Or perhaps gone to one of Bush’s faith based organizations. Or perhaps his home is foreclosed. Or his bank has gone under. The country is ripe with endless possibilities with such sterling leadership. At the very least he could try to get a job out of the country, where they have been outsourced by free trade deals. Of course religion the way it is practiced now in America is pretty selfish and grim. He might have had to pass a litmus test.
Whatever. He is just another poor, deluded, wacked out conservative. He is blaming the wrong party. But at least in jail he will have time to reflect. His food and housing will be paid. He will get all the things he does not have now. A guaranteed place to live and benefits.
And just reflect on this. Only two people had to die so he could make his statement.
July 28th, 2008 at 7:05 pmGuys… one question. And this I ask seriously.
Over there in the USA, other than liberal and conservatives, what other groups are there? Undecided, libertarians, who else?

All of the above, and more…That’s the problem I see with the major ‘two party’ system. If you belong to one of the lesser known groups, you ultimately have to decide among the 2 or 3 parties, otherwise you run the risk of throwing your vote away on a candidate who cannot win, or siding with the best of the leftover choices.
In America, it seems all 300 million citizens must funnel their votes through 1 of 3 parties.
How about ‘None of the Above’?

I think that, after two terms of “the uniter”, America is divided between “conservative” and “the opposition”. For all the rhetoric, the “opposition” is still a diverse group. And I’ve yet to hear a comprehensive definition of “liberal”.
July 28th, 2008 at 7:43 pmInside the house, officers found “Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder” by radio talk show host Michael Savage, “Let Freedom Ring” by talk show host Sean Hannity, and “The O’Reilly Factor,” by television talk show host Bill O’Reilly.
The shotgun-wielding suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was motivated by a hatred of “the liberal movement,” and he planned to shoot until police shot him, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said this morning.
any good lawyers out there?
July 28th, 2008 at 8:10 pmThe local Reichradio nutbags are blaming the whole thing on “secularism”. They really think that “secularism” makes people shoot up churches!
We have always been at war with Eastasia.

I’m sure the “liberal media” will pursue them as relentlessly as Heavy Metal and Rap musicians are pursued when one of their fans goes around the bend.
Won’t they?
July 28th, 2008 at 8:26 pmWill the books of mAnn Coulter, Savage, etc. display a label reading “Explicit Idiocy”?
July 28th, 2008 at 8:54 pmAnother pussy, lazy right wing loser who is too dumb to see it is the Republicans who are in power and have ruined this economy and then is too much of a complete coward to just eat his own gun and needs to kill other people. Sounds like a typical Republican to me, but the troll somehow equates this POS as a liberal. You just can’t cure stupid and cowardice.

If “tits” can earn a warning label on a cd, why not? I’m as much for free speech as anyone but, free speech doesn’t cover inciting crimes.

July 28th, 2008 at 9:36 pmHas Fox offered him his own show? Or CNN? He can be a sidekick to Glenn Beck!
July 28th, 2008 at 10:08 pmThe GOP controls the media, the White House, the Supreme Court, and (until a year ago) the Congress, and this POS blames liberals?
O’Reilly and Hannity probably think this guy is a hero, and that he shot the wrong people.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:10 pmThis is just the first in many more to come. We are going to see lots of conservative types lose it and either kill themselves, others, or both.
When an ingrained belief system is shattered, in combination with poor problem solving skills, you have a melt down.
One less Goper in the voting pool. Good.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:17 pmGopers like to solve their problems with violence. It’s the lower level way of doing things.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:19 pmYet who is it that Bush and the Repubs want us to be afraid of?
Yep…foreign terrorists who will follows us home from Iraq and kill us in our grocery stores.

Our prisons are full of Liberals. That’s why Democrats keep pushing for “Felon Voting Rights.”
You DO know you are a liar and a fool dont you? I mean it hasnt escaped your notice you are a complete and utter moron has it? Got any evidence that the prisons are full of predominatly liberals? No? Imagine my suprise, you can show yourself out in disgrace. Felons LOSE their voting rights in most states they are reinstated AFTER they do their sentence including probation that is AFTER they have paid their debt to society. I know of NO ONE that is advocating putting voting booths into prisons.

My GOD you an ignorant piece of garbage. He was unemployed armed inbred and incredibly stupid sounds like a conservative to me. I dont know that many liberals that shoot up churches because they are mad at liberals. Then again I am not as brainwashed and braindead as you obviously are.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:47 pmObviously, we need to start profiling middle-aged white guys now. Will a “watch list” be set up for them?
July 28th, 2008 at 11:18 pmLeading causes of crime are poverty and hopelessness. People who have been subjugated into the lower class for 400 years are not exactly going to vote for the status quo. They are not exactly going to vote for tax breaks for the rich and corporate welfare. They are not exactly going to vote for “three strikes and you’re out”.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:18 pmIt is illegal for billionaires to be vagrants, but somehow they don’t commit this crime. It’s the golden rule—those with the gold make the rules.
Above I was talking about “prisoners are liberals”—not the church shooter.

July 28th, 2008 at 11:26 pmThis is the double standard in POLITICAL discourse today…A right-wing whackjob like this murderer found with conservative books at home is only an exception, but when one liberal misspeaks something, then the conservatives and wingnuts get to paint every liberal with a broadbrush…
July 28th, 2008 at 11:29 pmIsn’t Adkisson just another frustrated, small town yokel clinging to his bible and his guns?
And they said Obama was wrong for pointing out the same thing?
July 29th, 2008 at 2:03 amI’m thinking the reason why most prisoners would vote Democratic upon leaving prison is because they’ve had time to think about their lives and realize how stupid they were to be a right wing knuckledragging neocon prior to entering prison.
Agree?
July 29th, 2008 at 7:22 amThis incident is the tragic fruit of the right-wing tactic of programming the disappearing middle class to believe that all their hardship can be blamed on a particular group, such as immigrants, or non-whites, or liberals.
The perpetrator in this case is ill, and needs our compassion.
But every person who participated in his programming needs to be disemboweled.
