Krauthammer Links Obama’s Berlin Speech To Hitler’s Nazi Rallies

Last night on Fox News’ Special Report, host Brit Hume asked the “All-Star Panel” for “help” in determining whether or not Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) got “a bounce” in the polls as a result of his recent trip to the Middle East and Europe.

Referring to Obama’s Berlin speech that was reportedly in front of more than 200,000 people, neo-conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer said he did not get a bounce because apparently, Americans don’t like it when politicians emulate Adolf Hitler at a Nazi rally:

HUME: Panel, help. Did [Obama] get a bounce from the trip or not? [...]

KRAUTHAMMER: I’m not sure — I don’t think he got a bounce. I’m not sure it was his intention. You don’t get a bounce out of standing in front of 200,000 Germans at a rally who are chanting your name. Bad vibes sometimes, historically.

Watch it:

Some other members of the panel chuckled at Krauthammer’s distasteful analogy. But unfortunately, he isn’t the first right-wing media figure to link Obama to Hitler and the Nazis. Referring to Obama’s decision to deliver his speech accepting the Democratic presidential nomination at Denver’s Invesco Field, Ben Stein proclaimed: “Seventy-five-thousand people at an outdoor sports palace, well, that’s something the Fuehrer would have done.”

Last February, National Review contributing editor Jonah Goldberg said, “You know, when Barack Obama campaigns, he’s basically saying, ‘I’m a silver bullet. I’m going to solve all your problems just by electing me.’ FDR, Hitler, all these guys, they basically said, ‘All your problems can be solved.’”

Digg It!

Y’know… on the one hand it is screamingly funny watching these right-wing pundits shattering Godwin’s Law and getting creamed corn all over themselves, trying to use the right-wing master tactic “turn the other side’s greatest strength into a liability”, when they’ve got nothing. NOTHING.

On the other hand, you know there are LIVs who swallow this stuff like it was orange-flavored cough syrup. That’s scary.

Doughy Pantload equated Hitler and FDR?

I’m guessing he never listened to any of Reagan’s speeches in 1980, if he thinks Obama and those other authoritarian monsters were unique with that “silver bullet” stuff. What a moron.

Message of righties: There is no term limit as to how long fascism stays in your category. It doesn’t simply default into our party simply because you’re no longer in power. More voters are cleanly aware that that’s a permanent trait of your existence.

Man, are they clutching at straws. The smell of fear is palpable.

Gimme a break. THIS is all they have?

Yes, Obama can draw a crowd and he knows how to make a speech. And the righties are green with envy, since their candidate falls short in both areas. Therefore, they HAVE to make popularity and eloquence negative traits.

Yes, Hitler could draw a crowd and make a speech. So could John Kennedy. And George Wallace. And Ronald Reagan. And Martin Luther King. I believe that even Jesus Christ has a positive record in this area.

But Hitler is the desired association by the right, even though no reasonable person would claim outright that Obama’s ideology and Hitler’s are similar in any way.

  24. paleolib says:

The H-bombs are as distateful as they are increasingly predictable. Interestingly, they seem to fall into a broader strategy by the Republicans to suppress voter turnout by tarnishing Obama with everything they can think of including accusing him of the dreaded sin of optimism. Maybe they think the “nobody can help you so why would you be foolish enough to listen” message will convince the younger potential voters to get cynical and stay home on election day. Basically these doddering wingers are campaigning on the slogan of “We’re f#&ked anyway so vote for the old guy.”

  25. ralph the wonder llama says:

It should be acknowledged that there is some historical parallels between the rise of Hitler in Germany in the 30s and the excitement Obama is generating.

Hitler exploited nationalistic fervor in a Germany laid waste by WWI and by the conditions of its surrender.

Americans feel their nation similarly wasted, by the policies and incompetence of BushCo. Obama offers some hope for competent, intelligent governance in the midst of a trashed economy and national reputation.

  26. impeachcheneythenbush says:

But Hitler is the desired association by the right, even though no reasonable person would claim outright that Obama’s ideology and Hitler’s are similar in any way.

Yes…precisely the issue. No “reasonable person” would. But these are NOT reasonable people, and unfortunately, many of the (low-information) voters out there aren’t either.

  27. StratRat says:

So no words on the content of the speech, or its possible impact on the listeners? No word on Obama’s words, only the visual of him being listened to by 200,000+ people?

No words on Obama’s view of the future of the planet, only a screed comparing him to Hitler?

Tell me again, why the pundits are presumed correct in all of these issues? Does their track record of failure ever get noted? We do live in a world of absurdity….

  28. Democrat Soldier says:

Didn’t then-Gov Bush say all ‘All your problems can be solved’ when he was running in 2000???

  29. DvlsAdvocat says:

Its disgusting to see the full on hate that the right wing pundits and politicians spew. The hypocrisy of them trying to paint Obama as Hitler-like, while serving as the propaganda arm of this Hitleresque administration boggles the mind. If they would turn their ubercritical eyes to BushCo, the could find all the Hitler parallels to fill their daily vitriolic “news” programs.

This crap makes me sick and disgusted. I’m worried though, because Obama doesn’t seem to be responding to any of this stuff, or countering any of what is going on – and it’s still only July. I can’t stomach what this might look like in a couple of months. I know he wants to stay above the fray, but is anyone besides me worried about this? Is “slime” the only thing that works? I read an article this morning that said republicans are getting motivated because they view coverage of Obama as “unfairly positive” – you’ve got to be kidding – this is so twisted!

I seem to recall seeing a multitude of AMERICAN flags at that rally, not SWASTIKAS.

Face it, the right wing nut jobs simply can’t stand the fact that our candidate is superior in every way, even on foreign policy, as evidenced by his whirlwind tour of Europe where he was greeted as a liberator (pun intended) from the last 8 years of incompetant bufoonery.

  35. DvlsAdvocat says:

What worries me is that this fantastic person, and great candidate, who outshines every Republican presidential candidate this century, is only leading by 4-6 points. In an election year with the economic issues we face, the foolish war in Iraq, and the full frontal attack on the Constitution being perpetuated by McCain’s party, a candidate as dynamic as Obama should be crushing his opponent.
Sadly, the smear campaign does have traction for those foolishly wary of voting for “a black man”.
C’mon America!! Get with the program!

    Amazing.

  38. citizen_pain says:

If Obama were white and had an anglo sounding name, he’d be up by 50%.

Ah, I see where you are going wrong. You forgot the fact that the policies of the Bush administration are very similar to the policies of the Hitler Regime.

Obama represents the opposite of fascism, and that scares you. You need to be wrapped up in an authoritarian safety blanket or you might pee yourself from fear. Might I suggest moving to a place not known to be the Land of the Free or Home of the Brave.

I’ll enjoy checking your Pauline Kael like posts the day after the election…

  52. citizen_pain says:

Oh aceomalley 7: The Bu$h regime comparisons are right on target. After all, where do you think the Bu$h Crime Syndicate got their moeny to begin with? The Nazis.

At any rate, Bu$h’s actions, and his neocon handlers as well, are absolutely fascist in nature. Just do the google on the 14 points of fascism. You’ll find it on the intertubes somewhere.

Now a direct comparison of Bu$h and Hitler would reveal that:

    1) Hitler was a master orator, whereas the Coward From Crawford can’t speak one single cohesive articulate sentence.

    2) Hitler rallied his country from a depression to an economic giant, where Bu$h has rallied his country from a surplus and good standing in the world to the largest deficits in history and the worst reputation America has ever had.

Now, Hitler was a madman, so you could compare the tow on that point. The difference is that Hitler was an intelligent man for the most part, and Bu$h, well, not so much…

  53. ralph the wonder llama says:

assomalley, can you point to any substantive parallel between Obama and Hitler?

I mean, something those two figures share in policy or philosophy that is not shared by most other politicians or world leaders throughout history?

For instance, the ability to inspire large crowds would not be unique to them, even though Grampy doesn’t share it.

The penchant to invade countries that pose no threat is something that the aforementioned Mr. Hitler might share with our current president GW Bush.

    See how it goes?

Thanks. And remember to show your work.

I don’t think the citizens of Germany had the respect of their leaders back then. Why shouldn’t O accept the nomination in front of the very people who helped him. I don’t think Hitler asked for input.

Who cares what this Zionist GOP warpig thinks anyway.

Man, are they clutching at straws. The smell of fear is palpable.

The thought of a popular, smart, articulate, and uniting President who happens to be a Democrat scares the shit out of the Repugnicunts. After the last 8 years of a polar opposite who represents the best of the right wing ideology I can see why.

Chuckie K. got the shit beat out of him for being a smart-ass punk too many times as a kid. He desperately needs it again as a smart-ass adult.

Interesting, after reading through all of the hateful posts of this “progressive thinking” community, I can’t say I am looking forward to the day that Obama “may” be elected president.

The other interesting thing about BOTH parties is how they often feel that THEIR candidate will unite the country. Are you serious?? I mean really… Are you serious? This country is consistently divided on the conservative/liberal beliefs. Just because a single party wins with 51% of the vote does NOT mean the country is united. It doesn’t follow that EVERY American agrees with your position. Get over yourselves. WE have to work together to move the country in the right direction by finding common ground were we all can agree. Then we have to give and take a little.

NEWS FLASH: your party can’t be 100% right (no pun intended) on 100% of the issues. So what if YOUR party is the first to raise their hand and throw out a good idea… I am pretty sure someone that does NOT share your beliefs probably thought of it too. And it takes more courage to agree with someone you are philosophically opposed to than to stand back and lob

And as far as Charles’ comment about “someone else standing in front of a mass of Germans chanting his name” What do you expect him to say??? “Yeah! Obama really had the Germans behind him, way to go!” Please… Both sides will constantly present the other side in a bad light. Even the democratic candidate that is about CHANGE, is not above belittling his opponents. Just ask that Hillary chick. And as for uniting; He can’t even unite his own party. He is just another politician. Just like the rest. When others are called a flip flopper and accused of sitting on a fence, he is just changing his mind, or embracing possibilities. Just remember kiddies… he was not for offshore drilling before he was for offshore drilling. And he was for taking ALL troops out of Iraq before he was for leaving SOME troops in Iraq.

The Right Wing idiots are just as bad. I do tend to agree with them on more issues than with liberals, but they seriously need the head removed from their asses too. Not every person in the country is a “God Fearing bible thumper”, nor do we have to be. Man, if we could just find some damn normal candidate that was in the center… we could lop off the left ¼ and the right ¼ and enjoy some civility in the middle ½ . Now that is some PROGRESSIVE THINKING.

Just my $0.05, keep the change.

    End of rant-
