O’Reilly: Richest 1% would have to finance ‘folks who…smoke reefers 24/7.’
Today, in a Washington Times op-ed, Bill O’Reilly complains that if President Bush’s tax cuts “on those making $250,000 or more” are repealed, “me and other rich folks” would have to finance “folks who dropped out of school, who are too lazy to hold a job, who smoke reefers 24/7.” He adds, “I am part of the 1 percent of Americans that paid an astounding 40 percent of all federal income tax in 2006,” But, as the Wall Street Journal recently noted, “the average tax rate of the wealthiest 1% fell to its lowest level in at least 18 years.” The Wonk Room has more here.

I remember talking to someone before I had kids about how easy childrearing will be. He laughed in my face, as he knew how difficult it really was. I was uninformed.
It occurs to me that if Daryll is telling us how to live our lives ‘better prepared’, he must not have gone through the trials and tribulations which are part of everyones daily existance. If you never experience the challenging issues for yourself, then there are no issues for anybody else.
I think once Daryll goes out on his own and tries to make a living, he will understand what I am saying.
Daryll, a person can only be so prepared for so long. Many things are subject to chance and bad luck – not the laziness of the liberals going through daily life. Find your heart please.

Since health insurance only covers to a total yearly benefit, what if your child (God forbid) suffers from a birth defect – I am not wishing this on at all, just trying to illustrate how some things will be out of your control.
How about if you – or your wife’s job gets outsourced and the only viable options aren’t as favorable as they once were?

According to the Tax Policy Center in 2006 the richest 1%:
1. Receive annual income above $365,000
2. Have average annual incomes of $1,159,675
3. Pay average FEDERAL tax rates of 32.6%
4. Receive 18.8% of all pretax income
5. Pay 25.9% of all FEDERAL taxes, including income taxes and payroll taxes. When regressive Social Security taxes are included their tax burdens don’t look so onerous.
6. Pay 39.38% of all Federal income taxes.
BillO uses a common right wing tactic by omitting from consideration all taxes paid to the federal government and focuses only on federal INCOME taxes to add weight to his argument.

July 29th, 2008 at 6:15 pmConsidering two of the largest entitlement programs, Social Security and Medicare, are funded by regressive payroll taxes and not income taxes, I am less than impressed with what passes for logic by Bill-O. Add in the regressive gas taxes that fund what passes for our highway improvement fund and the regressive sales taxes that most states and localities rely upon for some to most of their tax base and his argument falls flat. In light of the progressive decline of our infrastructure (roads, bridges, dams, etc.) from neglect I am quite willing to tolerate an income tax increase if it helps keep us from having third world services.

When Microsoft’s stock price was at its peak, Bill Gate’s wealth ($100 billion) equaled the wealth of the bottom one half of Americans. The Walton family (Arkansas not Virginia) has $100 billion in wealth. Have they paid too much in taxes? I’ll gladly trade places with any one of them!
