The EPA has issued a gag order to its employees, according to an internal e-mail released by the Union of Concerned Scientists [UCS]. The e-mail instructs staffers to refuse to speak with reporters, investigators, and the agency’s inspector general, and to refer questions to designated officials. A UCS spokesman said that, with evidence that “retaliation is widespread” at the EPA, “it’s critical that…employees are able to speak confidentially.”
Margaret Chiara, one of the nine U.S. attorneys fired by the Bush administration in 2006, says that she now believes “she was fired because of the erroneous belief that she was having” a gay relationship with a fellow prosecutor. Responding to a DoJ report that found “alleged homosexuality was used as a litmus test in hiring and firing,” Chiara says “there is nothing else” that could explain her firing.
An internal Department of Homeland Security memo “is advising employees to be on increased alert beginning next month through next summer because of a series of upcoming high-profile events including the Olympics, both major parties’ nominating conventions, Election Day and the presidential transition.”
On the trail today: Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has a meeting with House Democrats today. After holding a town-hall meeting in Nevada, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will travel to Englewood, CO, where he is expected to attend a campaign fundraiser at the home of multimillionaire investor Charlie Gallagher.
McCain “drew a sharp rebuke Monday from conservatives after he signaled an openness to a higher payroll tax for Social Security,” contradicting his previous claim that there were “no circumstances” under which he would “be willing to accept a tax increase.” The Club for Growth called McCain’s shift “shocking.”
Only 37 percent of America’s unemployed received jobless benefits in 2007, “down from 55% in 1958 and 44% in 2001, according to the Labor Department. The others have exhausted their benefits, haven’t applied or don’t qualify.”
Senate Republicans who have been clamoring for weeks to get a new round of votes on legislation that would expand offshore drilling appear close to getting their wish. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said yesterday it looks “like we’re very close to having a consent agreement.”
Utilizing his powers as commander in chief, President Bush “on Monday approved the first execution by the military since 1961, upholding the death penalty of an Army private convicted of a series of rapes and murders more than two decades ago.”
After the Senate Ethics panel put renewed pressure on Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) to stop delivering babies for free at a Maryland private hospital, Coburn insisted the panel “might as well investigate Sen. Patrick Leahy’s cameo in ‘The Dark Knight.’” “If Sen. Coburn can only deliver babies for free at a public hospital, shouldn’t Sen. Leahy only be allowed to donate his notable thespian skills to a public entity like PBS?” his office asked.
And finally: John McCain, who has admitted his computer illiteracy on many occasions, tried to address the issue while speaking in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the nation’s technology capitals. “Am I a tech freak? No,” he said. “And I don’t like to text message because I’d rather call somebody on the telephone.” He added, “But I am forcing myself…let me put it this way, I am using the computer more and more every day.”

Rape Victim’s Death Ruled “Suicide” By Army — Henry Waxman, Where Are You?
The Jamie Leigh Jones-Halliburton rape case was horrific, but what happened to PFC Lavena Johnson in Iraq in 2005 was many orders of magnitudes worse. The parents of the young Missouri woman were told that she died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, and her death was ruled a suicide. But her physician father became suspicious after looking at injuries to the body:
After two years of requesting documents, one set of papers provided by the Army included a xerox copy of a CD. When Dr. Johnson viewed the CD, he was shocked to see photographs taken by Army investigators of his daughter’s body as it lay where her body had been found, as well as other photographs of her disrobed body taken during the investigation.
The photographs revealed that Lavena, a small woman, barely 5 feet tall and weighing less than 100 pounds, had been struck in the face with a blunt instrument, perhaps a weapon stock. Her nose was broken and her teeth knocked backwards. One elbow was distended. The back of her clothes had debris on them indicating she had been dragged from one location to another. The photographs of her disrobed body showed bruises, scratch marks and teeth imprints on the upper part of her body. The right side of her back as well as her right hand had been burned apparently from a flammable liquid poured on her and then lighted. The photographs of her genital area revealed massive bruising and lacerations. A corrosive liquid had been poured into her genital area, probably to destroy DNA evidence of sexual assault.
Despite the bruises, scratches, teeth imprints and burns on her body, Lavena was found completely dressed in the burning tent. There was a blood trail from outside a contractor’s tent to inside the tent. She apparently had been dressed after the attack and her attacker placed her body into the tent and set it on fire.
The Electronic Village has been working hard to draw attention to this tragedy. Color of Change has now joined the battle and is asking people to contact Henry Waxman and ask him to conduct hearings as chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
http://firedoglake.com/2008/07/28/rape-victims-death-ruled-suicide-by-army-henry-waxman-where-are-you/
This is truly a parent’s worst nightmare. Not only the death of their daughter but to find out that the Army lied to them. My thoughts go out to Lavena Johnson’s parents. The man or men that did this heinous crime deserve to go to jail forever. I have already e-mailed Waxman the story. More horrifying is that if this is what the contractors do to their own that they are suppose to protect; imagine what they must be doing to the Iraqi women. I don’t care how long it takes, each an every one of them should be hunted down and made to stand trial.
July 29th, 2008 at 9:01 am**I read this stuff and my first reaction frequently is Duh…but since so much of this has been ignored by corporate media, a good percentage of the population is clueless about much of this. We had all those hearings, heard some very damning testimony and then Gonzales resigns. Since then,,,crickets chirping. He wasn’t even a good liar.
On a related note, wasn’t Goodling given immunity for her testimony? I think if it can be proven that she committed perjury it will nullify her immunity. Can anyone clarify this?
A great big thanks to Feinstein and Shumer for letting in another AG who is not only a lot smarter than AG AG but seems committed to allow all past crimes to go unpunished.
Fired U.S. Attorney Builds Criminal Case Against Alberto Gonzales
By Jason Leopold
The Public Record
Monday, July 28, 2008
John McKay, the former US attorney for the Western District of Washington, pieced together thousands of pages of internal Justice Department (DOJ) emails, reviewed public documents and pored through hundreds of pages of sworn testimony his former boss, Alberto Gonzales, gave to Congress about the firings of at least nine US attorneys nearly two years ago.
McKay said evidence in the public record demonstrates the former attorney general and his underlings may well have obstructed justice.
McKay was one of the nine US attorneys fired in December 2006 for reasons that appear to be politically motivated. The DOJ's Inspector General, Glenn Fine, is conducting an investigation to determine whether Gonzales perjured himself before Congress or sought to influence the testimony of Monica Goodling, the DOJ's former White House liaison who used a political litmus test to hire and fire attorneys, and resigned in disgrace last year.
On Monday, Fine issued a 145-page report that concluded Goodling and several of her colleagues at the agency broke federal laws on numerous occasions by basing their hiring decisions on politics and refused to promote career prosecutors they suspected of being gay.
McKay said that a special prosecutor should be appointed to further probe the circumstances behind the US attorney firings if the inspector general's report determines federal laws may have been broken. Fine's report on the U.S. attorney firings is expected to be released within a month.
Snip (McKay lays out some great points about the firings)
If the DOJ's inspector general investigation concludes further investigation into possible federal crimes is warranted and refers the case to the US attorney's office for the District of Columbia to probe the matter, McKay said a special prosecutor should be appointed instead because the US attorney in DC is Gonzales's former chief of staff.
"The Justice Department must seek a special prosecutor who will be seen as independent of the White House and of the Justice Department itself," McKay writes.

July 29th, 2008 at 9:02 amFBI searches county offices in Cleveland
FBI and IRS agents served at least 10 search warrants Monday at Cuyahoga County offices, businesses and homes as part of a public corruption investigation, authorities said. About 200 FBI agents, some brought in from Pittsburgh to help with the searches, raided the county administration building, engineer's office and an information services center.
"This stems from a long-term public corruption investigation," FBI spokesman Scott Wilson said. "The warrants are sealed through the court, and basically, I cannot comment on anything that's being searched or seized." Staffers at the county's information services center said they were told they could go home because they wouldn't be able to work. About 80 people are employed at the center, which does computer work for various county agencies.
Agents entering the administration building searched the third and fourth floors, including Auditor Frank Russo's office and Commissioner Jimmy Dimora's office, Wilson said. FBI vehicles were spotted at both of their homes. Phone calls seeking comment from Dimora and Russo weren't returned. At least 10 search warrants were executed. Agents also entered four area businesses: DAS Construction Co. in Garfield Heights; Blaze Construction in Berea; Doan Pyramid Electric in Bedford Heights and Vincore Corp., a consulting service in Cleveland run by Russo's son, Vince.

This is not surprising in the least. I’m glad that they finally did it; it couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch. Ohio needs to have all the corruption cleaned up, in 2005 it was our Governor Taft. He was the first Ohio Governor ever convicted of ethics violations, the judge scolded him big time and made him give Ohioians a formal apology. Then sent his Republican butt to jail and fined him $4,000 dollars. Taft is the great-grandson of William Howard Taft, the only US President who also served as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Is it just me or do we seem to go through this every summber since 2001? I'm sick of all the fear mongering.
July 29th, 2008 at 9:07 amI believe Adkisson is what Rove would characterize as a "low information voter" who needs his propaganda spoon-fed to him through FOX.

Bush can now delight in being known as the "Executioner-in-Chief".
I find the fact that a president has the right to approve the execution of someone dangerous.
July 29th, 2008 at 9:12 amI have a feeling that when the Bush regime leaves, there will be many EPA (along with other govt agency) employees coming forward with the truth about how they were forced to lie and cover up for these crooks.

July 29th, 2008 at 9:13 amGood morning, I'm a reich-wing talking parrot. Liberalism is a mental disorder. We value public service, anti-discriminatory practices, health care, housing and education for all, equal rights for women, accomodation for people with disabilities, and an open political process where your vote is counted.
Remind me to take my meds this morning. Big pharma has me down to take a lot of them.
July 29th, 2008 at 9:14 amSenate Republicans who have been clamoring for weeks to get a new round of votes on legislation that would expand offshore drilling appear close to getting their wish.
But only after blocking legislation by the Dems, which the media once again conveniently ignored. Pelosi was adamant about not letting this through...what happened? Did that old wiretap info come in handy? Again?
July 29th, 2008 at 9:15 amAnd then we have Harry. Harry is a lot like Conyers. They both express 'great concern' about issues, but neither has the balls to take a protracted stand against the powers that be.
I have nothing against invertebrates, unless they're elected officials.
Jim Adkisson, the man who shot two people to death in a Tennessee Unitarian church this week because he was angry at “liberals and gays,” had an array of right-wing books at his home. Inside his house, “officers found ‘Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder’ by radio talk show host Michael Savage, ‘Let Freedom Ring’ by talk show host Sean Hannity, and ‘The O’Reilly Factor,’ by television talk show host Bill O’Reilly.”
When Timothy McVeigh blew up the Murrah Federal Building, much was made of the fact that he enjoyed reading "The Turner Diaries". The question was asked if this book led McVeigh to commit this horrid act of terrorism. Will the same scrutiny be brought to Adkisson's choice of reading material?
July 29th, 2008 at 9:15 amSo the Tennessee killer was adicted to the right-wing hate crowd then went out and committed a hate crime. Granted, there is only a dotted-line there but there is none-the-less a cause and effect relationship. To some degree, Savage, Hannity and O'Reilly have blood on their hands. I hope they are happy today.

This will surely bring out the people who would like to see these hateful people banned from the airwaves and banned from writing books. We already have laws against libel and laws against slander, but laws against inciting violence have always been a bit murky.
The first amendment has always been one of our most cherished freedoms. But where should the line be drawn? Are Savage, Hannity, and O'Reilly deriving any joy from what their books have wrought? Probably not -- in fact, they will most likely do their utmost to downplay any role their books had in this violence, alleging that Adkisson is a total nutcase and their books wouldn't have made any difference. In fact, the ACLU would most likely defend their right to write whatever crap they want.
This seems similar to the connection often drawn between teen violence and rock music that appears to incite it.
I would like to see some discussion on what, if any, limits there should be on "free speech" in light of this tragedy. Is Adkisson an isolated case, or a symptom of a deeper problem? What constitutes "inciting violence"? And if published material is shown to incite violence, should that be a criminal matter, or should it strictly be a matter for civil suits?

You are correct, Frosty, it's called 'The Senate'.
In England, it's the House of Lords. Our Senate's primary mission, apparently, is to help other Senators. Time & again, obvious misdeeds and nefarious actions are either overlooked, ignored completely or downplayed to the public.
Let's clean House in November. They're all up for re-election. Vote on their voting record, not their rhetoric. Fear is a powerful motivational tool, as the NeoClowns well know. Let the voters in the USA turn the tide by using the same fear against them as they've used against us.

I think if you look up "terrorism" in the neocon dictionary, you will find that only Muslims can be terrorists, and furthermore, an act of violence can only be labeled "terrorism" at the discretion of Bushco, regardless of how many people are actually terrorized. This is what allows the Bushbots to claim that Bush has kept us safe because we "haven't had any terrorist attacks since 9/11."
In the minds of the wingnuts, a guy who "hates liberals and gays", forms his ideology from reading neocon hate material, and goes and shoots up a church is just a guy "letting off some steam."

July 29th, 2008 at 9:32 amDeLay: God Created America To Propagate Christianity
Earlier this month, we noted that former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay had joined one of his "closest friends," Rick Scarborough of Vision America, for Sunday services at Scarborough's Texas church. Now, Vision America has helpfully posted the audio of DeLay’s rambling sermon on its website in which he explains that "America was created by God to spread the Gospel; to spread the word of Jesus Christ and to propagate Christianity":
I know that America was created by God and it was created by God, not for wealth, personal wealth. It wasn't created by God so that we would have the resources that we now have. It wasn't even created by God to have the freedom that we have now. America was created by God to spread the Gospel; to spread the word of Jesus Christ and to propagate Christianity. And the reason I know that is because my entire political career is exhibited by that. The Lord walked with me …I came to Christ in the first year in Congress and now I've been walking with the Lord he has trained me and showed me why he created this nation: to spread the Gospel
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/2008/07/delay_god_creat.html
It’s a good thing that People for The American Way keep a close eye on this Republican nutcase. Why is he not in jail yet? The man has been indicted for money laundering and conspiracy charges. So this is how DeLay "exhibits his spreading of the gospel." WOW (unbelievable, I thought you would appreciate this little gem.) Only a Republican could have come up with that line about why "God created America". Scary people.

The only thing I can think of (other than obvious poor sportsmanship) is the possibility that Coburn's Senate run was an elaborate exercise in civil disobedience -- the practice of deliberately breaking a law to get it changed. But this isn't usually a wingnut maneuver, so I think it's just whining about the rules.

FBI and IRS agents served at least 10 search warrants Monday at Cuyahoga County offices, businesses and homes as part of a public corruption investigation, authorities said. About 200 FBI agents, some brought in from Pittsburgh to help with the searches, raided the county administration building, engineer’s office and an information services center.
Update:
Those familiar with the federal investigations have said that D-A-S Construction CEO Steven Pumper is believed to have sparked the investigation, having reportedly offered to bribe a Cleveland building inspector two months ago. The FBI supposedly tracked Pumper, arrested him, but have not yet filed charges.
Pumper, a friend to both Dimora and Russo, is now believed to be helping the FBI in a larger scale investigation, which may have led to Monday's raids.
Each of the contractors being investigated by the FBI and IRS are major players in northeast Ohio, having secured a number of very lucrative contracts. All three have done work on the
Cleveland Browns Training facility in Berea, OH. D-A-S Construction and Doan Pyramid Electric are also said to have done tens of thousands of dollars in free work on Dimora's home over the past six years.
Vincore Corp. is a consulting firm operated by Frank Russo's son, Vincent Russo. It is not yet clear what his connection in the case may be.

Its no surprise that the DoD would keep genuine suicides out of the limelight as "bad for morale" but I think it;s pretty damn obvious that the Pentagon has been covering-up murders in the ranks. Hell they won't even let US personnel provide video testimony from the legal safety of the US to British inquests into "friendly fire" incidents.

July 29th, 2008 at 9:51 amIf these numbers are correct then the real unemployment figure in America is triple the 5 or 6 percent that they flaunt.....closer to 15 or 20 percent unemployed......that sounds about right.
July 29th, 2008 at 9:51 amJim Adkisson, the man who shot two people to death in a Tennessee Unitarian church this week because he was angry at “liberals and gays,” had an array of right-wing books at his home.
Unfortunately, this is what can happen when an individual can't or won't think on his own, when he or she is spoon feed what to believe. To be honest, it was only a matter of time before someone snapped regarding liberals.
Ironically, Jim Adkisson was upset at losing his job, and having his monthly food stamps ceased, something "entitlement Democrats" have always fought for. His unwarranted anger should have been directed towards the right, yet his zombified brain couldn't comprehend that the left wants to help him, not ignore him.
By the way, I DO NOT condone any violence towards any political party. Yet, the right's legion does, for whatever reason (ie mAnn Coulter).

July 29th, 2008 at 9:58 amYou crack me up. So any summer excursions to rehab whores or convert gays or anything or have you given up on that madeup shit?
You liberals are an enemy to God and this nation. You support breaking God’s Laws, socialism, disresprecting our President and denouncing self-reliance and personal accountability.
God's law you say? Are you referring to this law?
or:
When you talk of socialism are you referring tot he bail out of financial institutions? The subsidies to oil, energy , auto and other big money industries? Or are you just talking about helping the poor?
July 29th, 2008 at 9:59 amFred:
My husband bears out your reasoning. He was laid off three months ago (company closed), but he doesn't qualify for unemployment as he routinely earns more in freelance every week than the $275 per week he's entitled to.
That's right, after 25 years in his industry - and a healthy salary to boot - in Florida that's only worth $275 a week.
So he's unemployed, but not counted in any government statistic.

"You liberals are an enemy to God and this nation."
-- Not true. A great many of us believe in God, and most of us are patriots. It takes a real patriot to want to make this country great, and it will take real patriots to clean up the mess it's currently in.
"You support breaking God’s Laws..."
-- Which ones? The one about shellfish? The one about who we may sell into slavery? The one about wearing garments of more than one type of fiber?
"...socialism..."
-- Did you know that Jesus was socialist? He was the one who admonished us to take care of our widows, orphans, and the less fortunate. Something you haven't seemed to grasp.
"...disresprecting our President..."
-- Do you believe that the President should be blindly followed no matter what? Or do you believe that one of the great things about our country is that we have the right to criticize our leaders when it's warranted? And will you show President Obama the same respect you expect us to show for President Bush?
"...and denouncing self-reliance..."
-- Yep, every man for himself. Real Crist-like. (NOT!)
"...and personal accountability."
July 29th, 2008 at 9:59 am-- When have we denounced personal accountability? We've been fighting tooth and nail to get some personal accountability from our leaders. Or haven't you noticed?
Daryll said:

John McCain's only concern is for raising money for his campaign. While Obama is working with Democrats on the massive deficit and talking about a stimulis package that is needed to help fix our economy.
According to the latest polls 40% of the people are for McCain. They must be completely clueless that this economy needs a REAL stimulis package to get Americans back to work and prosperous again. It must be okay with them that McCain spends most of his time at fundraisers instead of trying to fix the major problems we face in this country. They need to take off the blinders and get a reality check before more people end up jobless, homeless and without healthcare.

1. The polling is skewed to keep the suspense, and thus ratings, up. They kept it up with Clinton/Obama months after anyone paying attention could see that she didn't have the math behind her.
2. The polls are right and we have that many racists in the country.
3. The polls are right, and while we have a degree of racists, the real story is that negative campaigning works and McCain is gaining through this.
4. The blatant love affair the corporate media has for McCain is sheltering him even as he seems to implode day after day.
Or a combination of the above . . .
July 29th, 2008 at 10:28 amRe: misshusseinmolly
Well, I haven't read any of the books that Adkisson read, but I find it real hard to believe that the contents lead someone to violence against liberals. They may get people angry and give them a scapegoat, but that is a far cry from inciting violence.
It sounds to me (although I haven't followed this too closely) that the greater issue may have been that he lost his job and was under a lot of stress. Severe stress makes people do things that they wouldn't otherwise do. I think if we want to combat violent crime, one thing that we can do is reduce stress. Eliminating poverty, providing adequate healthcare, ceasing to send our young men and women off to war, etc. would all reduce much of the stress that is a part of many American lives. Is it any wonder that many of the countries of the world with strong social programs (e.g. Scandinavian countries) have low crime rates, little poverty, and relatively happy/content populations? Although their model may not be the best for us, it seems to me that we could do a lot better to combat the social problems that afflict this country. Perhaps then we might see our prison population shrink with an overall reduction in violence. Targeting the conservative BS-machine though, I think is just making them a scapegoat, just as many on the right made gun laws a scapegoat after the Va. Tech. shootings. After all (sarcasm coming here), the best way to prevent crimes is to have our churchgoers and schoolchildren arm themselves.

I love your list, and I think there's some partial truth to everything on it, so I'm going with the combination theory.
One item that could also be a factor is that we have a great many new voters this election, and they are probably not being polled (since pollsters prefer going with "likely voters" and those are people who have a voting history). And remember that Obamania and the competition between Obama and Clinton have been largely responsible for all these new voters, who are overwhelmingly Democrats.
Figure also that younger voters are more likely to lack land lines and use their cell phones exclusively. This often cuts them out of the polling process as well.

July 29th, 2008 at 10:48 amre: close polls between Obama and McCain
Pollers do not call cell phones when conducting their polls (it's more work than calling traditional land lines). An overwhelming majority of young single people and college students (I'd say nearly all) use their cell phone as their only phone. This demographic looks to vote predominantly for Obama but nobody is polling them. Let's not forget the record number of new young/college folk registering this year, they could easily change the tide.

Don't forget that only ONE poll shows McCain ahead -- and that's the most recent USA Today/Gallup poll. The rest of the polls (Rasmussen, Gallup, Democracy Corps, Fox News, NBC News, CBS News, ABC News, Reuters/Zogby, Research 2000, Quinnipiac, Investor's Business Daily/TIPP, and Newsweek) all show Obama ahead of McCain in their latest results.
But ONE poll, regardless of which poll it is, is enough for the wingnuts to cling to and discredit all the others.

I don't believe the polling under any circumstances. The Obama candidacy has spurred millions of young people to register to vote. I agree with you Exit, they would do anything at this point. I can't remember which show I was watching where they were discussing the loaded questions that they are asking "voters". Anyways, they worded them in such a way that they were skewed towards McCain. This is one of the reasons I have never paid much attention to those polls. I have learned to mistrust that because stats and polls can be manipulated too easily.
You are right, cell phones do play a big roll now. If they text messaged the young voters, I bet the numbers would prove to be completely different. The younger generation does not talk on the phone, even their cell phones, they text message everything. Instant messaging on the computer is big with them also. My daughter is a great example of both.
I hope you have a great day :)

His unwarranted anger should have been directed towards the right, yet his zombified brain couldn’t comprehend that the left wants to help him, not ignore him.
By the way, I DO NOT condone any violence towards any political party. Yet, the right’s legion does, for whatever reason (ie mAnn Coulter).

From what information are you forming this opinion?
bit takes it that anyone who doesn’t think the way DRxJ thinks is, “…spoon feed what to believe.”
What exactly does DRxJ read when he wants to “…think on his own?”
There are reports that this guy’s problems were neither ideological nor “spiritual”, unless of course you take “spiritual” to mean the kind of spirits one gets from a bottle.
