Olbermann: White House sent me talking points too, ‘I still have them.’

Last night on MSNBC, host Keith Olbermann discussed Bill O’Reilly’s outrage at Scott McClellan’s recent revelation that the White House regularly gave Fox News talking points and that the channel’s pundits and commentators “were useful” to the Bush administration. O’Reilly called McClellan “crazy” and “a liar.” But Olbermann said that he knows from “personal experience” that McClellan “didn‘t make this stuff up”:

OLBERMANN: We know the White House sent out talking points. McClellan says this and I can tell you, from personal experience, I still have them. In 2004 — in retrospect, this looks like one of the great wastes of all time—they sent me a set of talking points, not fully understanding the nature of the show even in 2004, before I sat down and interviewed Joe Wilson. McClellan didn’t make this stuff up.

Hang on to them, Keith. They’re needed for the Contra-Bush Library!

  2. raynman says:

Keith, of all people, should know that verifiable facts that disprove a right winger’s claim isn’t going to go very far in having that right winger admit to being wrong.

This is he credo of trolls everywhere.

  3. BestGovEmp says:

Bill lives in a permanent state of denial. What else could it possibly be. Many people I know have been calling Faux news the “White house News Channel” for the last 7+ years.

Maybe someone else got them before Bill and changed their format or presentation, but I’d bet anything he has spewed their propaganda many times before.

Prosecute Bill O, Savage and Hannity for causing the reich wing nut job walking into that church in Tenn and blowing up the liberals.

If we hold record executives/artists responsible for their messages in music, why can’t we hold these guys responsible for their messages in the “news”?

  4. misshusseinmolly says:

I wish he would make them public. I’d like to compare the actual talking points with transcripts of Fox News broadcasts from that time and see how close they match.

I remember back in the day when the White House just issued press releases. Now it’s talking points. What’s next — actual teleprompter scripts?

  5. upside99 says:

But, But ……. Clinton did it too!!!
    …….Right? ……… Right??

  6. upside99 says:

I thought Keith’s comment about what his show was all about and the WH didn’t even know it was quite telling.

I wonder if Colbert also got some. Heh Heh

  7. Abu Ben Hussein Leporello says:

To the 23% of American’s so sadly lost in self-deception, it’s time to wake up and face the day. The Emperor has no clothes, the ‘restore honor’ theme crashed and burned, this Administration is terminally inept, at best. As January 20, 2009 gets nearer and nearer these revalations will just keep coming. If a criminal probe is actually launched, into the Pardoned or the Unpardoned , woo-hoo; hang on to your hats kids, its gonna be a bumpy ride!
Impeach Pelosi (is she impeachable???), Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

  8. Zimzone says:

misshusseinmolly Says:…What’s next — actual teleprompter scripts?

McBudweiser can’t finish a sentence without a teleprompter.

In fact, he can’t finish a thought without Lieberman in his ear.

He can’t state a policy without flip flopping in the same speech.

Yes, the King of Fears doesn’t do computers, but he sure likes him some teleprompting.

  9. SpoxLogic says:

And you know, it’s not that the other news corps aren’t saying they didn’t get talking points, as well. They are just saying that it is reprehensible that you don’t state that you did when using them. Which is what Fox did and still does.
Why is Billo in such a tizzy? Did the truth hit too close to home…like say right in his pants?

  10. texaslady says:

Yea for Olberman, hope he drags them out but hey, don’t wait for the 23%ers to EVER wake up. Won’t happen, they can’t admit they worship an idol with clay feet.

  11. upside99 says:

Don’t we all remember the many Daily Shows where Jon has clips of ALL the main news shows and they are all saying the same things on the same day. Must just be coincidence, I guess.

Ah, the Squawking Points of all the Bush-borg Parrots… Polly wants a fascist state, squawk, squawk… Kind of like those $10 mechanical talking parrots they used to sell a few years ago; they repeated everything you said..

Slightly O/T, Mr. Wolf Blitzer on CNN just described the latest McLame smear ad against Obama, trying to link him to Britney and Paris, as “bold.” Somehow, I can think of a few other ways to describe this pathetic stupid little McLame smear, but then, I’m not being paid millions of dollars each year to parrot right wing talking points…

  16. Aanya says:

Of course the tools at fox would deny having talking points. Is a 10 lb robin fat? The rethugs are so completely brain washed, they are even given a single word to push. Remember the day “elitist” began? You heard Mary Matlin to Hannity to Elisabeth on The View say that “word”! None of the rethugs can think for themselves! They do what they are told, and they do it with a straight face. It’s the rest of us who are laughing our butts off at them! What fools!!!!!!

The new numbers came out and it wasn’t even close. When your show is based around negatives, “Worst Person” the American public who get it, get tired of it.

Actually, to continue your line of thought, the demographics for Faux and billo are very close to the people who also watch WW reslin’. So, if you say LIV are fans of both, then you have a valid argument.

BTW, who is your favorite ‘resler’?

  22. dbadass says:

So quagmire: If the consumer so much seeks the made for consumption bullshit of O’Reilly so badly why do you continue to claim a left media bias. Shouldn’t the market already have solved this? O’Reilly is a shill he doesn’t actually believe any of the shit he says. It is written by writers to appeal to the most base of the viewers. You must be able to see that. He just signs his check and goes home. It is no different than the Springer type shit that the right claims is warping the quality of the society.

  23. gummitch says:

    Quagmire Says:

Yep. I remember when McCain was running for the nomination against Bush. The media and the liberal talking heads all used the word “Maverick” to describe McCain. There was a montage of them all saying, “John McCain is a maverick”. The lefty talking points of the day.

“Lefty”? McCain the Maverick is “lefty”? Who writes your material?

That would probably explain why “the left” has been so critical of the Media for calling McCain a Maverick in this election.

Or not, depending on whether your planet has gravity.

And “quagmire” was another one. After the Iraq war started, the liberal talking heads and media referred to the Iraq war as a “Quagmire”. And I also remember the left using “Gravitas”. Do you all remeber those talking points put out by the left?

It was a quagmire, and it is a quagmire, and even Cheney said that as Gulf War I was winding down. Or maybe you weren’t born then.

  26. Leftside Annie says:

    Ralph?

Aren’t you being a little hard on our poor trolls? Poor things can’t even spell – and here you are, expecting them to make sense??

    Oh, dear.

  27. paleolib says:

    Quagmire

Precisely what point are you trying to make here? That the talking points don’t exist? Seriously? You are trying to argue that this or any other administration did not feed information to the press to get its perspective out to the general public? If so you are fighting the wrong war. The point McClellan was making that rankled the FoxBots was that those talking heads were “useful” i.e. swallowed the hook. Having had to watch Fox “News” at my crazy inlaws’ house I don’t think that point is all that controversial either. The “talking points” part on the other hand is a no brainer.

  28. Wayne says:

  29. pete says:

To the best of my knowledge, Faux’s favors didn’t require a written list in an envelope marked “tlaking points” in bold red letters. I think it’s fair to say that every White House press briefing is just a delivery system for talking points.

Here’s a newsflash for Bill0 and the trolls:

Every time a member of the media repeated Scotty’s, or Snowjob’s or Purina’s or the Chimp’s, words in glowing terms, they were helping the White House by spreading the effing talking points.

I look forward to hearing KO’s list, but, it’s irrelevant to Bill0’s ridiculous claim of “never receiving them”.

  30. pete says:

Seriously. How many times has some blithering idiot said, “the surge has been a success” just in the last 24 hours? How many were on Faux? When’s the last time Bill0 said it?

If that’s not “helping the White House” by “repeating the talking points”, what is?

The pain and anguish that they’d experience in a moment of self-awareness — is that worth the small gain for truth? After all, it’s not like they really matter. I say let ‘em live in their delusions, as long as they don’t harm anyone else.

It has all the evidence you will need but idiots show contempt prior to investigation. You have already made up your mind…what does that make you quagmire?

  47. texaslady says:

And just how do you KNOW that Olberman is lying, that he doesn’t have talking points? Are you a producer on his show or do you have an inside track ? I see you left yourself and out by saying EVERYONE is given talking points. So is Olbermann lying or not ?

Wow. Not only can this troll not wean himself off of talking points, even when he’s bashing them, he can’t even keep the proper talking point with the proper thread.

Y’know, I think I’d even prefer a stupid troll to one who’s just phoning it in.

  49. pete says:

The stupid troll forgets that the “middle” wants and expects Obama to “head to the middle”. The “middle” is who we are and what once made our country the envy of the free world.

There are talking points coming from everywhere Strat. I do not deny that. I do not believe that any news source needs a direct link from the White House, House, or Senate leaders to get the talking points of the day. I’m saying that Olbercrack is lying when he states he has actual White House talking points.

I know I make fun of your posts. I do go a little too far sometimes with personal stuff which doesn’t elevate the debate one bit. I am working on this. I ask for your patience.

I prefaced my words with the preceeding because I am sure you are aware that ‘talking points’ aren’t actual words written on paper. The talking points KO is referring to are not an actual filed away sheet of ruled margin 8 1/2 x 11 paper.

They are words spoken to him – and others, or are floating around the punditsphere which they can pick and choose which ones to discuss or not. In the beltway, I am certain the players know which points are operative and which ones are not. Which ones are in play and which ones are not.

The right certainly gets their words from their sources, the left does the same. Sometimes the words match up, sometimes they don’t. Please don’t expect KO to bring out his notebook to show you the specific sheets of paper.

Both sides play the same game, at least to me anyway.

Our only real hope, should our worst suspicions about Bushco come true, is that there are enough honorable flag officers left to say, “no Sir, we are not going to do that” and make it stick. I hope that’s why there haven’t been more of them resigning over Bushco’s disastrous military policies. They may be all that stands between us and “banana republic” status.

The only remaining question is, did the same brand of paint load their developing minds with lead and mercury or, were they contaminated by separate sources?

For the same reasons people in here change the trolls names around. Why not just call them by their names right. It’s fun to poke fun at other people. Or it’s just hateful rhetoric. You choose. Gotta run.

But that doesn’t explain this particular construction. I can see “Al Bore” or even “The Goricle” — those are still childish, but at least make sense in a third-grade-recess kind of way.

It’s not just Fox News. The entire MSM takes White House press releases and relays them to the public as actual news.

“Can anyone explain to me why wingnuts insist on typing “algore” with no space? I mean, it seems kind of childish to me, for no good reason.”

Because being so synonymous with the global warming movement that he is now a noun and a verb. He should be proud.

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=algore

“Now a noun and a verb” says nothing about the compression of the name. However, I see that its source is Rush Limbaugh, so it makes sense that it’s childish.

And that trolls would repeat it mindlessly.

  84. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Tracy_5 Says:
“But the evidence is pretty solid that they CHOOSE to use them, verbatim in most cases.”

So does left wing talk radio and Olbermann with the Democratic party’s talking points.

    Examples, please?

Pete – hope fumigation will be enough to rid the White House of the stench of 8 years corruptness. Do you remember the GOP saying they return honor to the White House ? It must be sickening to be a reputable republican these days.
    July 30th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

As a person who was once proud to say I leaned right, I can assure you that anyone with a conscience is sickened and disgusted by what The GOP has come to represent. (They lost me the second I saw Jerry Fallwell influencing policy.) And I think very few reputable people still identify themselves as reps or conservatives any more.

It’s only the truly unbalanced, the sick and malformed, who still cling to those titles. Sullying the terms for all time.

  86. ralph the wonder llama says:

Look, Trace, even if we grant, for the sake of argument, your contention that Olberman repeats “Democratic talking points”, Olberman is hardly the equal of Faux News. Olberman is on air for five hours a week.

Faux News has twenty-four hours a day to “catapult the propaganda”.

It’s arguments like these that you advance that make you seem so silly and overmatched.

  87. ralph the wonder llama says:

pete, that’s why I value your contribution here. Your points are always reasoned and well made, and they come from a different place than most here.

  88. pete says:

“…has Fox News even criticized Bush or any of his cronies?”

Only when they aren’t radical enough. Faux will never forgive them if they don’t attack Iran.

  89. pete says:

    Thanx ralph.

Why does our troll keep on about KO? I’m pretty sure he didn’t call anyone a “liar” or “idiot” for describing what he does.

Bill0, on the other hand, went off like a rabid weasel because someone suggested he didn’t just pull all his material out of his as#.

Heck! Bill0 should be overjoyed at the implication there’s a source for his bile. Being a mindless dupe of the White House is a slightly higher form of creature than extreme Reichwing hatemonger. I think it would elevate Bill0 somewhat in most people’s eyes.

  90. Shayne says:

The troll crap has gotten so thick around here the last couple of days wouldn’t it be better to just flag them and talk about them and not to them. Obviously they are unable to learn anything.

  91. ForTruth says:

Golly gee whiz Wally, The White House doesn’t interfere with the news media like that.

  93. helenahandbasket says:

If you assume that O’Liely, only was sent talking points and he didn’t use them, his denial of even that, only underscores the pathology of his lies.

  94. cage free brown says:

let O’Reilly keep digging his own grave with his piehole.

EVERY b.s. detector in America knows why he’s making such a big deal out of this.

“It’s arguments like these that you advance that make you seem so silly and overmatched.”

Are you suggesting that Olbermann and MSNBC aren’t mouthpieces for the liberal Democratic party? Maddow isn’t a demoratic and raging liberal? Who is Milbank? David Schuster?

I’m suggesting that for every Olberman, MSNBC has a Scarborough. Chris Mathews is far more right than he is anything else. Rachel Maddow doesn’t have a show on the network. She’s an occasional commentator, and a very bright one. Dana Milbank is also only an occasional reporter. But MSNBC is hardly a “mouthpiece for the liberal Democratic party”. For one thing, there IS NO “liberal Democratic party”. It’s very nearly as corporatist as the Republicans. For another thing, if MSNBC was a “mouthpiece for the liberal Democratic party” it would not have fired Phil Donohue when his was the highest rated show on the network.

Face it, Trace, there is no “liberal media”. It’s all corporate, and it’s all cowed by BushCo, has been since 2001. The only reason Olberman is allowed to do his “Special Comments” is because viewers respond to them, the political atmosphere isn’t poisonous for them any more and they get ratings. That’s all.

Just throwing out names that you think are “liberal” doesn’t make your point. David Shuster, for instance, shows no liberal bias in his reports, and you haven’t demonstrated any. He’s a real journalist, unlike Bildo, but since he’s willing to report on the less savory aspects of a criminal administration, wingnuts like you think he’s a “liberal”. His reports are not unfairly presented. He’s professional with his guests.

From the article to which you linked:

“I really do take on people with power,” (Mathews) said. “Deceit is what drives me crazy, either by Bill Clinton or the hawks in this administration.”

If the government fails the people, it is the media’s responsibility to report it, is it not?

Your “liberal media” meme is losing air by the minute, Trace. Best find a new one. Good luck.

  97. pbg says:

Quagmire, your problem is, your core belief is ‘I hate liberals.’ It’s not a cohesive position.
I’ve met and had interesting debates with all sorts of people with conservative and/or right wing positions: Objectivists, Libertarians, what I call Heinlein SF conservatives, rock-ribbedsocial conservatives, Bill Buckley conservatives, Fundie conservatives, Bell Curve conservatives.
The thing is, that the libertarians would hate me for my mutualist ideas but agree with me n privacy and reproductive choice. The Objectivists would rant and rave but run down religion worse than I ever did. There were social conservatives whose anti-immigration stands were matched by their isolationism. The Heinlein SF conservatives hated touchy-feely liberals–but hated fundies just as much and liked anyone who was a fan of space exploration.

But that started to change in 1980 with Reagan. Up until then, I subscribed to the National Review, but was dismayed to find that a formerly magazine ofsharp jaundiced social commentary became a mag fill of ‘Yay! We won! Look at us! and just loved everything Reagan did. There were conservatives who were just plain horrified when America became a debtor nation under Reagan, but you wouldn’t find it at NR any more.
And Newt Gingrich sealed the deal. The only Republicans were movement Republicans: if you didn’t toe the line you were thrown out.
And it made (and makes) no sense: Social Darwinism but no real Darwinism; fiscal conservatives saying deficits don’t matter; Fundamentalists Christians supporting a President who never goes to church and lets his daughters rngage in underage drinking bouts with Ashton Kutcher–and elitists who flaunt their MENSA memberships supporting idiots.

If you had an actual ideology, Quagmire, there would be places where you and I would agree, whether you were a fundie or a Randophile–but you’re nothing more than a movement conservative whose position is dependent on mine because we’re the enemy.

Doesn’t it bother you, to have a high opinion of your own intelligence and to be subordinate to fools and upper class twits of the year?

    Tracy_5 Says:

Actually giving them to Olbermann?…no, but if you watch his show you will immediately see that he repeats them on a nightly basis.

Just like O’Reilly, and wingnut propaganda.

  99. pete says:

Tweety is no “librul”. He’s a yapping little lap dog who snarls and barks at people who show “weakness” and licks the face of anyone who strokes his ego. Plus he may be the rudest interviewer to ever hold a gig so long. I can’t imagine why any rational person would want to do his show any more than Bill0’s. I’d punch the smug SOB in the nose the first time he interrupted an answer.

  100. ralph the wonder llama says:

Did T5 mention Dana MIlbank as a “a demoratic and raging liberal”?

    What a coincidence.

Oh, those “raging liberals” in the media….

I do so wish they would learn to keep up with the talking points.

Everyone to the right of Hannity is a liberal in Tracy’s world…never mind that LIBERALS AND PROGRESSIVES here are the best to judge which media talking head is liberal or not…

liberal has come to mean anything that the extreme wingnuts don’t agree with…Chuck Hagel became a liberal when he expressed opposition to the war in Iraq, even though he consistently gets a high rating from conservative groups…
