Toby Keith: ‘Black Society’ Thinks Obama ‘Talks, Acts and Carries Himself As A Caucasian’

toby1.gifCountry singer Toby Keith, who is on a media blitz promoting his pro-lynching movie, Beer For My Horses, said during a radio interview with Glenn Beck today that he believes “black society” will pull for Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), even though “they think in the back of their mind that…he talks, acts and carries himself as a Caucasian”:

KEITH: I think that the black people would say he don’t talk, act, or carry himself as a black person.

BECK: What does that even mean?

KEITH: I don’t know what that means, but I’m saying that’s what I think that they would say. Even though the black society would pull for him, I still think that they think in the back of their mind that the only reason that he is in is because he talks, acts and carries himself as a Caucasian.

Listen here:

Beck responded by simply saying “Oh.” But it’s an attack line Beck himself has used in the past, claiming that Obama is “colorless” and “might as well be white.”

Other conservative media hosts have joined Beck in employing this rhetoric. The day after Beck’s “colorless” remark, Rush Limbaugh said that Obama should “renounce” his race and just “become white.” Extreme conservative talker Melanie Morgan has called Obama a “halfrican” who “is not allowed to wear the African-American badge because his family are not the descendants of slaves.” Tucker Carlson wondered about Obama, “Is he black enough?”

Digg It!

And how exactly would Toby Keith know what "black society" thinks?

  2. StratRat Says:

So the Dixie Chicks get hounded for their comments about Bush, but the GOP's own Toby Keith can be a racist without consequence. Would this be another example of a liberal media bias?

Toby Keith sings to the Low Information Voters. They are his base. "We play both kinds of music here: country and western."

  3. ForTruth Says:

Toby Keith acts and carries himself as a dimwitted moron. As a caucasian, I have noticed this.

The Right gets a wadded up when liberal hollywood types and celebrities get into politics. Why is this guy and Ted Nugent ok then?

I guess we have two of the more irrelevant people together here, the beckster and the low IQer, Toby.

I have listened to Toby try to talk, but all that comes out of his mouth is proof he is either one dumb Mo'Fo or a parody of much of the trailer trash that listens to his crap and watch WW Resslin'.

Toby Keith is an endorsee of Takamine guitars. A very good company who made an awful choice in allowing their instruments to be used by him.

Is the color treatment of that guitar (the flag) the same symbolism as a flag pin? I guess Toby is patriotic, huh? I mean, look at the size of that flag pin he wears around his neck. A true American zero - um, hero.

I have been to Nazareth, PA and walked through the factory. Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) was sitting in the chair right next to me, and I was afraid to say hi.

I have also walked through the Fender factory in Ensenada, BC Mexico - I live in San Diego. Very cool. Smelled like wood all over the place. Couldn't figure out why.

When was that? Back in the day they processed their own woods there. I am not sure how the abalone was handled but I assume it came in processed already. The craftsmanship was insane and if you climbed around in the dumpster you could fill your car with chunks of ebony, rosewood, mahogany, etc. It was cool. With increased awareness of deforestation that all changed and I am glad. I hope they get all their stuff from farms now but I haven't been in Nazareth nor Martin in many years

Probably 1998-1999. The wood-blanks were stacked out back, and the finished instruments stacked out front. The abalone came from 2-3 companies, mainly in SE Asia and Mexico. The custom shop guitars are hand made start to finish - even to the point of selecting the 'pieces' of abolone which make up the neck and headstock.

Martin - and Gibson - both have their own farms in Montana. Very green, and very efficient. They also can better quality control their wood stock as a result.

The different woods impart specific tones and vibrate at useful frequencies. Maple, Ash, Mahogany, Teakwood, Rosewood, koa, Spruce, etc...are used in various combinations (sides, backs, tops, necks, fretboards).

Nowadays, most Martins are made with either Maple or Mahogany sides and backs, with solid spruce tops. That combination seem to be quite popular and toneful. All maple gives a brighter sound and the darker woods (mahogany, koa, rosewood) are best at lower register tones (bass notes).

Also, the tropical woods are denser (harder to shape), wetter (harder to dry), more expensive (transportation), heavier (comfort). Plus wood like koa (from hawaii) and bubinga (from africa) is particularly rare now, so they are not used in production pieces much any longer.

The custom shop guitars can include any or all of the above, depending on the consumers choice and pocketbook.

The way I remember it was that everything was made the way you describe the custom shop.

The care they put into every inch is astounding. I saw them throw away what I thought were perfectly good pieces, but the tech held it up and showed me where the 'cracks' and 'spots' were. I couldn't see them even as he was pointing to them. Their eyesight must be incredible. Craftsmen and women, to be sure...All made in America. God Bless...

i guess if you're black (even partially black), you're expected to be BLACK 24/7, whatever that means? Why is there no such standard for whites?

I won't even get into the idiocy of Toby Keith presuming to speak for "black society".

Today’s Republican Party is a freak show of hate-filled sociopaths, immoral religious and social extremists, insecure, overcompensating, irresponsible, dangerously incompetent, war-mongering imperialists and greedy, exploitive corporate anarchists. Just look at the odious and inadequate carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen the Republican Party had competing to be their presidential candidate. Republicans tacitly welcome homophobes, misogynists, racists, anti-Semites and messianic fundamentalist nut jobs into their party and inherently incorporate their values into their moral fabric and political objectives. Being a child of poverty raised with four younger siblings by a single mom, I’ve never agreed with social conservatives, but compared to Bush’s Republican Party, Eisenhower’s Republican Party was a liberal bastion of social and economic enlightenment and pluralism. Defending the actions of today’s Republican Party is advocating ignorance and evil over common sense and common decency. It would be hard to imagine that any presidential administration, Republican or Democrat, could have been as malicious, polarizing, undemocratic, corrupt or destructively pernicious to the founding causes and defining principles of our republic than George W. Bush’s. I am surprised that I am ashamed for the “good” Republicans, only because I could not have possibly imagined how “bad” some Americans were capable of being.

A resident troll showing that he is a "low information" voter. This was an out of context quote by Obama. The whole quote was exactly the opposite. It's intent was not "look at me arrogance", it was referring to our country. Here's the actual quote that was bastardized.

It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.

  93. earthworx Says:

All of this is just another tactic republicans use to suppress voter turnout of selected groups. They think that if they can raise enough uncertainty over whether black america thinks Obama is "black enough", that black americans will become discouraged and sit out the election. Thus saving McCain, and alot of other worried down-ticket republicans from increased black american turnout this cycle. This thought pattern shows a fundamental misunderstanding of black culture. There is no hegemony on thought in the black community and very few black americans are 100% black. In the 18th and 19th centuries, one drop of "black blood" was enough for one to be considered black so I doubt few black americans will begrudge Obama being only 50% black. The conservative pundits you've mentioned can opin all they want about this "issue", I personally don't know a single black american who watches or listens to their programs. They are just preaching to the choir.

The ruling class of this country built their wealth and legacy with the blood of innocents, and let's not (or let's DO) mention the genocide of upwards of 100 million (100,000,000) indigenous people who were here first on this continent, by our earlier ancestors, the Europeans.

These people are FCkD in the head, divisive, racists.

Makes me sick thinking about REAL American history, and the atrocities we have committed and continue to do to this day. If it's not the Iraqis, it was the Vietnamese, the Koreans, the Nicaraguans, the Philipinos, the Mexicans, Muslims, the list is long and not white.

The guy said they were brand new, called "relics", and were purposely sanded, and messed up, to look that way. I thought it was dumb.

Kinda like buying jeans with holes already in them.

  102. dbadass Says:

Are their actually "chicks" that dig "country" guys? I would particularly be interested in input on this concept from the ladies.

  103. The Shadow Says:

Until Toby Keith opened his mouth and proved himself an idiot, I thought he was just a stupid country and western singer. But now I know that he has some problems he needs to work through like learning not to speak for a group of people he knows absolutely nothing about. For any stupid so called star to pretend that he knows what black or white people are thinking is beyond ignorant, it's just plain dumb.

I think Toby needs to stick to what he knows and that is music. I don't think he needs to be talking about politics at all, his foot kind of gets in his mouth. I'd like to put my foot in the other ends of his anatomy opposite his mouth. The place where all of that shlt comes out when he eats it. Although not many blacks listen to his music, some do and I'm sure this stupid statement offended them. I myself had always given him respect an an artist, but he's lost that forever. As for his azz buddy Glen Beck, he's a nazi from way back and a charter member of his local K K K. I'm sure he'd like to wear his sheet and hood on TV but CNN asked him to wear a suit instead. They do let him and Wolf Blitzer and the others hold rallies in the parking lot when they feel like burning a cross.

  104. Nevar Says:

I don't think there are any chicks in country music land, just cowgirls.

I live amongst, and work with, ranchers, cowboys, and cowgirls.

They tend to be hard working, decent folks. They love country music of an older, more civilized style, and are plainly disdainful of what they call "modern country" and it's emphasis on drunken debauchery.

The "cowboys" Toby Keith caters to have little knowledge of cattle, horses, or the concept of an honest days hard work.
They ride around in large, glitzed out pickup trucks, drink a lot, swear a lot, and are generally common bullies and skanks.

  105. dbadass Says:

    Hi Jim.
    What is your major malfunction?

  106. darladooner Says:

i don't understand what all the fuss is about.....

obama is 1/2 white (kansas, in fact, and oklahoma is near kansas, in fact).

and it's not as if toby said anything outrageous.

  107. Nevar Says:

.. and, to all the lovely sun-kissed bonafide cowgirls out there, please respond to dbadass' query...

  108. dbadass Says:

    Nevar:
So what's the deal with cowgirls? I am sure I would enjoy many of them what with them being girls and all but still we don't have any of them round these parts...

  109. darladooner Says:

let's just ask ourselves: might black people see obama as more white?

is this such an outrageous thought? or is there some validity or truth to it?

i don't agree with keith, i just want to know what people think.....

funny that a white website would rush to the defense of blacks, and yet have some of its members say things like "what does keith know about black people?"

well, what do thinkprogress members know about black people?

how many black friends do y'all have? any?

    serious. any?

  110. Nevar Says:

    What do you know, darladooner?
You live in the Big Apple...
Do you have the pink cowboy hat with a sequined hat band and pheasant feathers that you wear to the bar on Country Night?

  111. Game of Life Says:

What is Black enough for this hick? Steppin Fetchit?

  112. darladooner Says:

    can i be reverse-racists?

what the hell do thinkprogress members know about 'black experience'?

how many black members does thinkprogress have?

and how many of those members are really black? and by really black, i mean.....do you live in the ghetto, or are you just talking sh*t?

    i want to know.

and this is from a black woman, who def does not live in the ghetto.

but i am super liberal, lower middle class, well educated, and urban.

  113. darladooner Says:

Do you have the pink cowboy hat with a sequined hat band and pheasant feathers that you wear to the bar on Country Night?

you got something against this black butch? i love my feathers, sugar!

  114. dbadass Says:

Ah Christ I already had to do this as to marine biology. Okay shall we start at the beginning? It's late might it just be okay to note that I was in a way mixed race teen. The only kids that didn't fit in were those weird south Philly Italians...

  115. Nevar Says:

dbadass... If you have hundreds of acres of well fenced rangeland, at least 4 horses, love animals (especially Australian heelers) and can simply say yes or no, you can make it with a cowgirl. It doesn't matter what you look like, as long as you look good on a horse.

  116. dbadass Says:

oops lots of typos. Still why do I even have to prove darladooner wrong? There really was a wrong side of the tracks back in those days. It has been gentrified since then

  117. wijg Says:

    darladooner Says:

...funny that a white website would rush to the defense of blacks, and yet have some of its members say things like “what does keith know about black people?”

    A "white" website??? WTF!

  118. Nevar Says:

I love feathers too, darladear, I neatly slice them in half and tie them to the south end of my arrows. I have a whole bunch hanging from my shield, and I even have one stuck in my braid.
I have absolutely nothing against you personally.
    Do you have nice hair?
    ;)

  119. dbadass Says:

    Nevar,
That's sounds like way too much work. How about urban cowgirls? I don't know any places that have one of those stupid mechanical bulls but there must be one somewhere around here...

  120. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Wow. Until darladooner showed up, I thought Toby Keith had bested all competition for stupidest statement posted on TP today.

Toby didn't know what he was up against, did he, darladooner?

  121. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

    darladooner Says:
    can i be reverse-racists?
what the hell do thinkprogress members know about ‘black experience’?

Not much. But then we don't presume to talk for African Americans saying that they feel or think a certain way, which is what Keith did. On the other hand, he has done plenty in his career to show that he is a racist piece of $hit. So he is even more presumptuous to try to speak for AA's.

  122. Nevar Says:

The mechanical bulls are a thing of the past, there were too many broken arms, legs, and necks. Seriously.
Urban country only requires the proper attire.
Jeans, boots, feathers, spangles, exposed cleavage, etc...

  123. dbadass Says:

    That guitar remains ridiculous...

  124. darladooner Says:

"But then we don’t presume to talk for African Americans saying that they feel or think a certain way, which is what Keith did"

do you have to be an african-american to know what one thinks?

  125. darladooner Says:

are whites so afraid of the subject of race that they simply condemn its every disagreeable manifestation? rather than confront them head on?

  126. dbadass Says:

confront who head on? I really am not comfortable head butting my nonwhite friends when they open their doors to welcome me and my children into their homes

  127. dbadass Says:

Nevar: The exposed cleavage part sounds okay so long as those exposing it made their own decision to do so. Now as to the spangles and feathers....

  128. dbadass Says:

"do you have to be an african-american to know what one thinks?"

Before you can understand the dolphin you must think like the dolphin eh Ace?

  129. darladooner Says:

there's a huge difference between, on the one hand, a dolphin and a human, and on the other, a white human and a black human.

as obama's existence has shown, you can be both black and white.

    got it?

  130. Nevar Says:

darladooner: "...rather than confront them head on?"

I am faced with the issue of race every day, daladearie.
    I live in a multi-racial community, and I am a distinct minority.
I do not confront race. I ignore it. I respect the cultures of the two distinct racial ethnicities of my neighbors and co-workers, Hispanic and Native American.
A couple of weeks ago I boarded a plane with over 100 other wildland firefighters on our way to California. I was the only Caucasian aboard other than the flight attendants and the co-pilot.(The pilot was African American.)
It has been my lifelong experience with the issue of race that only the people who wish to antagonize, exploit and belittle those of another race or culture are the ones filled with animosity, hatred, and intolerance.
Easy for me to say, you may rejoinder, my not having experienced a lifetime of prejudice.
But I'm learning all about it now!
    Hugs...

  131. darladooner Says:

dbadass: confront the fears head on, not black people head on. though that would probably be nice, too, just in a peaceful manner.

  132. darladooner Says:

I do not confront race. I ignore it.

    you ignore race?

    ok.

  133. dbadass Says:

why would I have any fears to confront?

  134. dbadass Says:

Sure the cetacean has a supralimbic lobe for one

  135. Nevar Says:

    g'night, dbadass.
    Stick with the mermaids.
    ;)

G'night darla, it was good to banter with you again.
    Peace

  136. dbadass Says:

Take care Nevar. Stay safe and rejoice in your sense of wonder.

    best-

  137. Nevar Says:

    darladooner Says:

I do not confront race. I ignore it.

    you ignore race?

    ok.

LOL I reread my post, and was certain you would pounce on that one.
    Poor phrasing, I agree.

The word "confront" is what I object to. Confrontation leads to conflict.
    Let me say that I
face race. I acknowledge it, and, as I said in the words immediately following "I ignore it.", I respect those cultures, and seek to learn and understand them.
May sweet feathery dreams caress thee tonight.

  138. SHRED Says:

Willie Nelson is actually a friend of this guy?

    WOW

  139. Max-1 Says:

    .

Spoken so well by a well informed WHITE man, about what the black 'society' thinks...

To Toby, does America come in black and white? What does that concept propose for the future of society? Does it perpetuate the concept through it's implied acceptance as a normal condition of the Nation... always racially divided? And Toby doesn't feed into this projection how?

I know, Toby will claim he 'has black friends'. I wonder they disagree?

    .

Great tool.... use it"

    ___________________________________________________________

Let's dissect this somewhat bizarre post.

First, what makes you think that ThinkProgress is a "white" website? I look at the people who run the site and I see a rather racially diverse bunch: http://thinkprogress.org/about/

Second, it's not that we believe that a white person cannot know anything about people of another race, it's that when we see a person treat all members of a different race as a monolithic group, we see that person proudly displaying their ignorance. Black people, like white people (or any other race of people), are individuals and think independently.

I have never revealed my own race on this site, and I'm not about to now. But I will say that I look through my circle of closest friends and they are black, white, Asian, and biracial. They are also Christian, Muslim, agnostic, and atheist. They are my friends for a variety of reasons -- including their intelligence, their compassion, their shared values with me, and that we all have a lot in common. Such as that we pretty much all think Toby Keith should keep his mouth shut on subjects of which he knows nothing.

  144. Arn Gunnutes Says:

    "I'm IGNORANT and white..."

--Toby Keith, Country Music "songwriter", gayboy who likes boots in his azz, 'cause it't the American way!!!

  145. j swift Says:

Toby obviously knows what he is talking about since his many rich rapper friends in the music biz are the standard of black society. (sarcasm off)

  146. Leftside Annie Says:

    HEY TOBY!!!

    SHUT UP AND SING!!!!

  147. brucehenry Says:

I've always lived in the South and have learned to tolerate, and often really like, a lot of Country music. When Toby Keith is singing about man/woman relationships, he can be funny, tender, and quite moving, depending on the song. It's only when he gets political that he sucks, spouting jingoistic nonsense.
I suspect most Country records are bought by women. Country songs about women are almost never about promiscuity or love-'em-and leave-'em, like a lot of hip-hop and rock songs are. They are quite often about how one man loves one woman, and will never mistreat her or leave her. Wishful thinking? Maybe, but listen to Country radio one afternoon and you'll see what I mean.
That said, Toby Keith is still a jerk.

  148. Kidd Dynomite Says:

WTF does this fool really know about what black people think? He may be a decent country singer, but he really sucks when it comes to political views and critical thinking. Hey Toby, just saying something doesn't making it true moron.

  149. CitizenE Says:

How very white of Toby. Time to do the dozens my friend, maybe with Cornell West. Shoot, Leeza Rice could dice and slice ya. You carry that straw hat with aplomb, sir, but you alienate white folks like myself with your ignorance.

  150. 5150 Says:

Country First. but first put Toby Keith on your Ipod.

  151. Jed Sixgun Says:

People...People, calm down! Toby is being genuine regarding his knowledge of what "Black Folks" think. You see, Toby Keith or just Toby is his given slave name. His real name is Kunta Kinte.

  152. stinkerbell26 Says:

Toby's right. That's the way some of those "black folk" think. anyone here ever been to Detroit or Toledo those "gangster" low lives with their pants around their ankles thinking they run the place. If Obama looses then they will get all offended saying this country is racist and cause a commotion over it.
We are all entitled to our opinion...

  153. progressiveone Says:

    Toby Keith is a Democrat.

  154. DEMOCRAT FROM IOWA Says:

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT I ENJOY TOBY SONGS AND THAT YES HE DOES SING TO THE RED NECKS OF THIS COUNTRY
EVEN SO IF YOU LISTEN TO THE WORDS OF HIS SONGS I THINK YOU CAN AT LEAST AGREE THAT MOST OF THEM ARE PRETTY TRUE TO FORM FOR NOT JUST THE SOUTHERN RED NECK BUT ALSO THE BLUE COLLAR WORKER NO MATTER WHAT THIER IQ BY THE WAY MINE IS 142 WHAT IS YOURS

  155. TER Says:

I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT THE DIXIE CHICKS ARE SAYING..LOL

  156. Sarge Says:

I love liberals, you never let the truth get in the way of your biggoted opinions. Toby Keith is a life-long hard-core liberal DEMOCRAT. (Just like Tim McGraw) All you know is that he plays country music and you stereotype him as a member of the clan. Yes, he writes an performs a number of songs that praise America, and the military, so you ignorantly stereotype him as a "member of the GOP" and a "racist?" Never underestimate the ability of liberals to rant against things they don't have the slightest understanding of.
