Cheney raises money at club that used to exclude African-Americans.

Vice President Dick Cheney attended a closed-door Republican fundraiser at the Shoal Creek Golf Club, which is “best known for protests over its all-white membership 18 years ago.” In 1990, “several major sponsors pulled advertising and black groups threatened pickets” when Shoal Creek founder Hall Thompson said he “wouldn’t be pressured into accepting blacks as members ahead of that year’s PGA championship, held on Shoal Creek’s course.” After the controversy, “Shoal Creek accepted a black insurance executive as an honorary member” and now club officials say “four of its 600 members are black.”

I would never belong to a club that would have me>

Golf/Country Clubs are as lame if not lamer than fraternities. Birds of a feather…

  2. hussein toasterhead says:

Is there no better metaphor for the Republican party than a closed-door meeting to exchange large sums of money at an exclusive club that only grudgingly accepts a few token minorities?

“Platinum” memberships include a free CD of “Prussian Blue….”

    – - They are all, no doubt, very articulate.

  5. texaslady says:

Are these clubs for grown ups or what ! Can’t allow women, can’t allow blacks, can’t allow Jews. I bet if Tiger Woods showed up he would get the red carpet treatment, but probably not allowed to join, like he would want too (not)

Did they let Condiliar Rice in ?

    What about Colin Bowel?

  8. misshusseinmolly says:

Wow — FOUR? That’s 2/3 of 1%! I wonder if this club puts them front and center as much as possible — sort of like the way the GOP does with minority delegates at their convention?

  9. StratRat says:

If any club allowed in Cheney, I would immediately worry about their integrity and judgement.

We have officialy reached the summer political news doldrums.

As it will likely last a while, with congress in recess, I hope everyone is fully stocked with Cheetos and Slim Jims.

this is, after all, what is wrong with the whole idea of Incrementalism. From 1 black fella in 1990 to 4, in 2008? the club will be wholly integrated in, lessee, 2103? That’s PRO-fuuking-GRESS!

    *Sigh*

    “Officially”

And it isn’t even happy hour yet…

Back in the 1950’s, Sammy Davis Jr., Nat King Cole, Pearl Bailey, and other black performers weren’t permitted to sleep in the same Las Vegas hotels where they performed. Hopefully, we’ve made progress in the past half-century — such a policy would elicit outrage from most decent people of any color today.

To be fair, this club has supposedly been integrated since 1990. The fact that it is no longer segregated should count toward redemption. But I would sure feel better if I knew that the reason for such a low minority membership was due to a lack of interest among minorities to join, rather than tokenism.

The story is as always, scared, monied people refuse to open their minds to the future.

“four of its 600 members are black.”

And I would say that the efforts to include more black members have still not been very enthusiastic.

Look, people, if we’re gonna nail trolls to the wall for trying to smear Democrats with forty-year-old scandals, it’s hardly reasonable to criticize Darth Cheney for fund-raising at a club that excluded blacks eighteen years ago.

There’s plenty of real dirt to nail him on.

I went to the website. Puros Blancos, y nada mas. The Club is THE PLACE in Birmingham…All the bidness types there belong. I bet there’s at least another four of five Kneegrows in Birmingham with the wherewithal to join…

  19. upside99 says:

Maybe Darth is finding it more and more difficult to feel safe, so he has to go where there are only “his kind” in attendance.

Although I agree with you Ralph, perhaps they were trying to help us locate him. He’s been MIA lately and that always worries people. Shadow government, er, I mean Continuity of Government and all…

  21. upside99 says:

OT but I just saw the wackiest ad as a lead-in to a story on NewsMax. It was RadioShack and had a full size Repug elephant in it, with red white and blue bunting and all.

One more reason I won’t do business with those assklowns. They also are sponsors of weiner boy savage’s radio crapola.

Damn straight, and as soon as they’re thru doin’ the dishes, we’re gonna truck ‘em out here, so’s you’s kin’ see ‘em with yer own eyes…

  23. I. B. Leary says:

I hope one of them is a scratch golfer and wins the club championship.

  24. MapleStreet says:

some folks above got that the discrimination is ongoing. But I’m still surprised at how many of the posts above didn’t seem to get that even today, 4 out of 600 is 2/3 of one percent (the article didn’t say how many other “people of color” were members). The black population in American is rather considerably more.

Plus the country club is in Alabama – more like 27% Black

According to Wikipedia, the demographics for Birmingham (which the club is near) are:

The racial makeup of the city was 73.46% Black or African American, 24.07% White, 0.17% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Wow. They let in 4 – count ‘em!! FOUR African Americans!!

    That’s mighty white of them.

    /snark

.006666 percent in 18 years? Now THAT’S progress, republican style!
