8 years ago today: Bush pledged to ‘uphold the honor and dignity of the office.’

bush.jpgEight years ago today, President Bush delivered his acceptance speech at the 2000 Republican National Convention. John Perr notes this pledge from Bush:

So when I put my hand on the Bible, I will swear to not only uphold the laws of our land, I will swear to uphold the honor and dignity of the office to which I have been elected, so help me God.

In the speech, Bush also said, “A generation shaped by Vietnam must remember the lessons of Vietnam: When America uses force in the world, the cause must be just, the goal must be clear, and the victory must be overwhelming.” (The picture on the right is of Bush shaking hands with McCain at the conclusion of the 2000 RNC Convention.)

Digg It!

So when I put my hand on the Bible, I will swear to not only uphold the laws of our land, I will swear to uphold the honor and dignity of the office to which I have been elected, so help me God.

Christain supporters of bush got anything to say about this? If you still believe that bush is a christain then you might as well have been with jimmy jones.

Problem is those behind Bush, the ones who are in control, did not EVER have any intention of the oath of office.

Ah, you see, he really never was elected – therein lies the rub. “… so help me God” is just pandering.

All that GDumbya has managed to do over the past eight years is to cut the balls of the right-wing of the republican party. If there will ever be anything positive recorded about his “legacy”, this may be it.

All you have to do to recognize this is view the “political theater” of the republicans standing in a darkened Congress and playing the victims after the session ended because they obstructed an energy bill last week. The “drill here, drill now” charade is the effort of a desperate party — it’s this year’s version of Terry Schiavo and the defense of marriage bill.

The republicans are, indeed, “the new Castrati”.

So when I put my hand on the Bible, I will swear to not only uphold the laws of our land, I will swear to uphold the honor and dignity of the office to which I have been elected, so help me God.

And, as it turns out, nothing could have been further than the truth. The Constitution shredded, the rule of law just a distant memory, torture and death, this “compassionate conservative” knows nothing of honor and dignity.

Now we can only hope that President Obama can remove the putrid stink of the GDumbya years. It’s a tall task because GDumbya has managed to squander a government surplus, destroy our military, diminish our standing in the world and bring the strongest economy to its knees.

Was the President extending an invitation to islamic terrorists to join with us in the fight against islamic terrorism?

Or was the president perhaps suggesting that anyone who objected to methods the President adopted to fight that battle was not “with us”? That’s the meaning I took from that statement, oft-repeated. Perhaps I was wrong.

Speaking as a Vietnam veteran, I can tell you that criticizing GDumbya’s supposed “military record” doesn’t insult me at all. He flew a plane that had been retired from combat; he jumped over the backs of young men who had been on the waiting list for the TANG for years; and then he went AWOL when he got scared that a pilot physical would expose his cocaine addition. BFD. His military service is as bogus as his “presidential legacy”.

  66. ralph the wonder llama says:

Thanks, USA_pat. I checked out your link and found its author’s ideas strikingly at odds with every other generally accepted definition of the term “fascism”, almost as if he were redefining the term in a way that suited his needs rather than the needs of a commonly accepted language.

You see, here’s how dictionary.com defines “Fascism”:

a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

Here’s how wordnet defines it (same source):

a political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government (as opposed to democracy or liberalism)

and the American heritage new Dictionary of Cultural literacy says this (same source):

Although both communism and fascism are forms of totalitarianism, fascism does not demand state ownership of the means of production, nor is fascism committed to the achievement of economic equality. In theory, communism opposes the identification of government with a single charismatic leader (the “cult of personality”), which is the cornerstone of fascism. Whereas communists are considered left-wing, fascists are usually described as right-wing.

But thanks for the link. What did you think of the one I offered you?

A federal judge in California said Wednesday that the wiretapping law established by Congress was the “exclusive” means for the president to eavesdrop on Americans, and he rejected the government’s claim that the president’s constitutional authority as commander in chief trumped that law.

That isn’t the president’s duty , you uncomprehending nincompoop .

The Constitution assigns the president two roles: chief executive of the federal government and Commander in Chief of the armed forces. As Commander in Chief, the president has the authority to send troops into combat, and is the only one who can decide whether to use nuclear weapons.

As chief executive, he enforces laws, treaties, and court rulings; develops federal policies; prepares the national budget; and appoints federal officials. He also approves or vetoes acts of Congress and grants pardons.

    Wrong….not very surprising…

Fascism – the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: nationalism, corporatism, militarism, authoritarianism, statism, dictatorship, populism, collectivism and economic planning.

Fascism is the cooperation of government with bussiness for the benefit of both. Business profits greatly from government policy – think No-Bit-Contracts, and government – the corrupt ones seeking perminant power- profit through payback – either bribes or campaign contrabutions.

The result is what we have today in America, an Oligarchy as a result of a self coup d’ eta, the overthrow of a government by the government!

Look at whom McCain already gathered around him to advise him on foreign issues. They are Neocons warmongers who want to see World War III in the making, and idea shared by extreme religious zealots who also support McCain.

    You are a colossal imbecile…………

  171. OpenDebate says:

Gee, I wonder why Saddam had all that uranium? LOL

  172. barfly says:

American and Iraqi officials have completed nearly the last chapter in dismantling Saddam Hussein’s nuclear program with the removal of hundreds of tons of natural uranium from the country’s main nuclear site.

But I guess it was all inert! LOL

The UN knew about that stuff before the invasion, and Bush never referenced this yellowcake, when making the case for war.

    Poor, sad clown.

  173. Gregor Samsa says:

    From the NYT article:

Although the material cannot be used in its current form for a nuclear weapon or even a so-called dirty bomb, officials decided that in Iraq’s unstable environment, it was important to make sure it did not fall into the wrong hands.

  177. Gregor Samsa says:

    More, from the same article:

The yellowcake removed from Iraq — which was not the same yellowcake that President Bush claimed, in a now discredited section of his 2003 State of the Union address, that Mr. Hussein was trying to purchase in Africa — is used in an early stage of the nuclear fuel cycle. Only after intensive processing does it become low-enriched uranium, which can fuel reactors producing power. Highly enriched uranium can be used in nuclear bombs.

Why promote the “secured” yellow cake uranium by the IAEA back in the 90’s as Saddam’s WMD claim? It undercuts your credibility to assert that this yellow cake WAS that big bad WMD scare. See, the UN knew of this yellow cake uranium. Bush knew this too. Unfortunately, you don’t. So…

    … you argue ignorance.

Yes, Saddam was a tyrant… but that wasn’t the intent of the AUMF of 2003.

Yes, Saddam once had used WMD’s on the Kurds… did you forget the Gulf War I and the dismantling of those WMD’s under Pappy Bush? Or have you forgotten that the USA originally sold Saddam those Mustard gas canisters and turned a blind eye when Saddam crafted delivery devices.

Remember, that wasn’t a vile of Freedom Powell held up at the U.N.

Remember, it wasn’t the State of the Union Address in 2002 where Bush promoted his Freedom agenda but instead proclaimed that Saddam was a threat to our security.

ROME, Nov. 3 – Italy’s spymaster identified an Italian occasional spy named Rocco Martino on Thursday as the disseminator of forged documents that described efforts by Iraq to buy uranium ore from Niger for a nuclear weapons program, three lawmakers said Thursday.

The spymaster, Gen. Nicolò Pollari, director of the Italian military intelligence agency known as Sismi, disclosed that Mr. Martino was the source of the forged documents in closed-door testimony to a parliamentary committee that oversees secret services, the lawmakers said.

  215. OpenDebate says:

    From FactCheck.org:

The famous “16 words” in President Bush’s Jan. 28, 2003 State of the Union address turn out to have a basis in fact after all, according to two recently released investigations in the US and Britain.

    # Ironically, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who later called Bush’s 16 words a “lie”, supplied information that the Central Intelligence Agency took as confirmation that Iraq may indeed have been seeking uranium from Niger.

Butler Report: It is accepted by all parties that Iraqi officials visited Niger in 1999. The British Government had intelligence from several different sources indicating that this visit was for the purpose of acquiring uranium. Since uranium constitutes almost three-quarters of Niger’s exports, the intelligence was credible.

  216. barfly says:

    OpenDebate Says:

I don’t know of anyone who claims that the administration is correct 100% of the time. There is evidence that Iraq sought to buy uranium in Niger, that is a fact.

  217. barfly says:

Butler Report: It is accepted by all parties that Iraqi officials visited Niger in 1999.

  222. barfly says:

He’s loopy. First, he says that “Saddam tried to get Yellowcake from Niger,” then claims he had it all along.

Of course, he won’t see the contradiction.

  223. Badger says:

How about switching from Yellow Cake to Anthrax. We need an “Open Debate” about this:

During the last week of October, 2001, ABC News, led by Brian Ross, continuously trumpeted the claim as their top news story that government tests conducted on the anthrax — tests conducted at Ft. Detrick — revealed that the anthrax sent to Daschele contained the chemical additive known as BENTONITE. ABC News, including Peter Jennings, repeatedly claimed that the presence of bentonite in the anthrax was compelling evidence that Iraq was responsible for the attacks, since — as ABC variously claimed — bentonite “is a trademark of Iraqi leader SADDAM HUSSEIN’S biological weapons program” and “only one country, Iraq, has used bentonite to produce biological weapons.”

ABC News’ claim — which they said came at first from “three well-placed but separate SOURCES,” followed by “four well-placed and separate SOURCES” — was completely FALSE from the beginning. There NEVER WAS any bentonite detected in the anthrax (a fact ABC News acknowledged for the first time in 2007 only as a result of my badgering them about this issue). It’s critical to note that it isn’t the case that preliminary tests really did detect bentonite and then subsequent tests found there was none. No tests ever found or even suggested the presence of bentonite. The claim was just concocted from the start. It just never happened.

That means that ABC News’ “four well-placed and separate sources” fed them information that was completely false — false information that created a VERY SIGNIFICANT LINK in the public mind between the anthrax attacks and Saddam Hussein.

    http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/01/anthrax/index.html

So….Who were these Sources..who did they work for…and why won’t ABC reveal them??

Since Saddam had yellowcake in the quantities listed, he wouldn’t need to find more, to begin refining; but if he was afraid to access the stored Iraqi yellowcake – and give the US a reason to invade – then why would he give them an even larger reason, by attempting to procure more, knowing we would likely find out?

Address that if you can, and not with some vague, “who knows?”

    No

Uranium used for nuclear power (fuel) IS NOT a WMD , chucklehead…………

  281. barfly says:

    IThinkDoYou Says:

barfly, You did not explain. People buy more of things they already have some of all the time.

Ok. Do “people” also have a world body (the UN) who prohibits them from using these “things they already have?”

Saddam could access this yellowcake (not uranium) stored in country at any time — but didn’t, for fear of being deposed in an invasion, for violating UN strictures against using it. He knew his regime would be torched if he were found to have accessed the stuff (we knew where it was stored, and were watching for this eventuality), and knew that we had a heightened cooperation from other countries, and any purchase would be discovered by the US, and used as a pretext for invasion (which it was). He also knew that his WMD threat was a bluff, which would be exposed, should he try to use the chemical and biological stuff, which was largely inert.

In this context, there is no reason (at least none given by the sad clown) why he would do it.

    Zip.

    Nada.

    Zilcho.

    Next?

Do “things they already have” have

  303. dbadass says:

I really like the part where a request is made to prove that you need a delivery system for a wmd. It is so stupid as to be hilarious. Even a suitcase nuke has a delivery system. It is the freakin’ suitcase for god’s sake. Wow the thought process is so random…

  306. Gregor Samsa says:

Before you said the method of delivery had to be developed FIRST.
    ~IThinkDoYou

Every time in human history that a new weapon is developed, it is delivered on an already existing delivery method. The first nuclear bomb was delivered with a B29.

The method of delivery has to exist first. What good does it do to have a brand new type of bomb that can kill millions at a time, if you cannot drop it on your ennemies’ heads, and will have to gather dust until you figure out a way to get it over there? Duh.

  307. barfly says:

C’mon troll. Where were those Iraqi WMD.

Or were you trying to tell me that Saddam was planning on having a few Iraqi scientists deliver, by hand, bucketfulls of uranium while wearing funny suits?

  311. Gregor Samsa says:

Yet you can’t explain this ridiculous assertion. Of course a method of delivery could be developed second.
    ~IThinkNotButYouDo

Yeah, because that’s how people proceed: Invent a devastating new weapon that has to wait years, perhaps decades, to be useful in any way on a battlefield because there is no way to deliver it.

It takes a certain kind of stupid to even consider the possibility -and by that, I mean you, IThinkNotButYouDo.

  331. Gregor Samsa says:

    Here it comes…

  335. Gregor Samsa says:

    IThinkNotButYouDo,

    Ok.

    Where are those pictures?

  336. dixie blood says:

    #369,

I should have added since WWII. And we were working on missile tech back then…

It takes missles…(A DELIVERY SYSTEM MORON!)

Oh…and that stupid a$$ suitcase sh|t the RePugniScums like you keep repeatin’ is not exactly like taking out a major population!!!

    It’s not WMD…

  337. Keith says:

    IThinkDoYou Says:

  338. Gregor Samsa says:

Not to mention the no-flight zones and the constant UK-US joint patrols on Iraqi air space would have made impossible an Iraqi sortie with the intention of dropping bombs anywhere in the world…

  341. Hussein McCain says:

  347. Keith says:

The Niger document was a poor forgery that anyone with half a brain could discover in one minute. The letterhead was stolen from the Niger Embassy in Rome. But who did the forgery? Actually, it isn’t. It’s completely sensible to ask for evidence to corroborate Bush’s claims that Saddam had stockpiles of WMD.

The only foolish argument is to ask people believe what you say based solely on… well, nothing except your word.

  378. Keith says:

By Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith
    January 23, 2008

President George W. Bush and seven of his administration’s top officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, made at least 935 false statements in the two years following September 11, 2001, about the national security threat posed by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Nearly five years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, an exhaustive examination of the record shows that the statements were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.

On at least 532 separate occasions (in speeches, briefings, interviews, testimony, and the like), Bush and these three key officials, along with Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan, stated unequivocally that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (or was trying to produce or obtain them), links to Al Qaeda, or both. This concerted effort was the underpinning of the Bush administration’s case for war.

It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to Al Qaeda. This was the conclusion of numerous bipartisan government investigations, including those by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (2004 and 2006), the 9/11 Commission, and the multinational Iraq Survey Group, whose “Duelfer Report” established that Saddam Hussein had terminated Iraq’s nuclear program in 1991 and made little effort to restart it.

In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003. Not surprisingly, the officials with the most opportunities to make speeches, grant media interviews, and otherwise frame the public debate also made the most false statements, according to this first-ever an_lysis of the entire body of prewar rhetoric.

  385. RandomChaos says:

Dixie, I think it will be a minute or two. It has to come up with a new Moniker. Then it will be back spewing crap and lies again.

  386. Keith says:

President Bush, for example, made 232 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and another 28 false statements about Iraq’s links to Al Qaeda. Secretary of State Powell had the second-highest total in the two-year period, with 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq’s links to Al Qaeda. Rumsfeld and Fleischer each made 109 false statements, followed by Wolfowitz (with 85), Rice (with 56), Cheney (with 48), and McClellan (with 14).

The massive database at the heart of this project juxtaposes what President Bush and these seven top officials were saying for public consumption against what was known, or should have been known, on a day-to-day basis. This fully searchable database includes the public statements, drawn from both primary sources (such as official transcripts) and secondary sources (chiefly major news organizations) over the two years beginning on September 11, 2001. It also interlaces relevant information from more than 25 government reports, books, articles, speeches, and interviews.

Consider, for example, these false public statements made in the run-up to war:

On August 26, 2002, in an address to the national convention of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Cheney flatly declared: “Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us.” In fact, former CIA Director George Tenet later recalled, Cheney’s assertions went well beyond his agency’s assessments at the time. Another CIA official, referring to the same speech, told journalist Ron Suskind, “Our reaction was, ‘Where is he getting this stuff from?’ ”
In the closing days of September 2002, with a congressional vote fast approaching on authorizing the use of military force in Iraq, Bush told the nation in his weekly radio address: “The Iraqi regime possesses biological and chemical weapons, is rebuilding the facilities to make more and, according to the British government, could launch a biological or chemical attack in as little as 45 minutes after the order is given. . . . This regime is seeking a nuclear bomb, and with fissile material could build one within a year.” A few days later, similar findings were also included in a much-hurried National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction — an an_lysis that hadn’t been done in years, as the intelligence community had deemed it unnecessary and the White House hadn’t requested it.
In July 2002, Rumsfeld had a one-word answer for reporters who asked whether Iraq had relationships with Al Qaeda terrorists: “Sure.” In fact, an assessment issued that same month by the Defense Intelligence Agency (and confirmed weeks later by CIA Director Tenet) found an absence of “compelling evidence demonstrating direct cooperation between the government of Iraq and Al Qaeda.” What’s more, an earlier DIA assessment said that “the nature of the regime’s relationship with Al Qaeda is unclear.”

BERLIN, Feb. 23 (Xinhuanet) — Former UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix has said he believes Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) were destroyed long ago and Washington created facts to justify the US-led war on Iraq in 2003.

“I think Saddam Hussein destroyed most WMD after the Gulf War in 1991. The war (with Iraq in 2003) was in no case justified,” Blix said in an interview with the online edition of the German weekly Stern.

“The Americans and British created facts where there were no facts at all. They did not want to listen (to me). My warnings were ignored,” said Blix.

“The Americans needed (Iraq to have) WMD to justify the Iraq war. They were a virtual reality,” Blix said.

    ProA.

    REMEMBER:
9/11 was let to happen on Bush’s watch. What did he prevent?

    REMEMBER:
George Worst Bush reminded us all, “THEY(sic) HATE US FOR OUR WAY OF LIFE.” Is this why he’s sought to undermine Congress, the Geneva Conventions and the Rights of the Republic?

    REMEMBER:
    Georgie doesn’t lie…

What a pathetic TROLL you are. USA_Pat, US_Pat, ThinkSocialist, ThinkFascist, IThinkDoYou, ProAmerica.

Your LOYALTY to a president is leaving you without a darn civil Right. Your LOYALTY didn’t cry when that man you worship attempted to deny you, along with all people, the RIGHT TO HABEAS CORPUS. You should be thankful there are some “activist” judges left on the SCOTUS to over rule the King. Otherwise, he would have to be cited with being in violation of the Constitution.

This LOYALTY also isn’t aware that currently, the man you worship can haul you into ‘GITMO’ based on telecommunications he’s ordered to be conducted on ALL Americans, and if you think he’s wrong, there is no course of recourse for you except to await your military tribunal. And if and when you are found guilty, the law he signed disallows you a PURSUIT OF JUSTICE.

WHOLLY ANTITHETICAL to what America has stood for…
    … And you support this?

WHY DO YOU HATE US FOR OUR FREEDOMS…
… That you support the Administration’s assertion to deny Americans their Freedom?

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, unless this TROLL proves us otherwise, he’s a Fascist supporter and appeaser.

Blix’s statements about the Iraq WMD program came to contradict the claims of the George W. Bush administration, [6] and attracted a great deal of criticism from supporters of the invasion of Iraq. In an interview on BBC TV on 8 February 2004, Dr. Blix accused the US and British governments of dramatising the threat of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, in order to strengthen the case for the 2003 war against the regime of Saddam Hussein.

In an interview with London’s Guardian newspaper, Hans Blix said, “I have my detractors in Washington. There are bastards who spread things around, of course, who planted nasty things in the media” [7]

  451. dbadass says:

I sort of think that despite the outcome I would be wise enough to know that the surgeon knew more than I or maybe Scott Ritter. I wouldn’t want either Scott nor I to try and pretend to be qualified more than the surgeon. Besides Scott is trained for something else which is why they didn’t ask you or I to do what he did/does…

    Blix: Iraq War Was Illegal
Blair’s defense is bogus, says the former UN weapons inspector

by Anne Penketh in Stockholm and Andrew Grice

The former chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix has declared that the war in Iraq was illegal, dealing another devastating blow to Tony Blair.

Mr Blix, speaking to The Independent, said the Attorney General’s legal advice to the Government on the eve of war, giving cover for military action by the US and Britain, had no lawful justification. He said it would have required a second United Nations resolution explicitly authorizing the use of force for the invasion of Iraq last March to have been legal.

  459. Max-1 says:

    #485 TROLL says:

Blix could not gain full compliance from Saddam. President Bush did, ending Saddam’s regime and his quest for WMD forever.

Blix was following orders of the U.N. to inspect and report…
Bush, in disrespect of the U.N. and the weapon inspectors, decided to invade WITHOUT DEFINITIVE PROOF OR AUTHORIZATION from the U.N.

What’s your next argument? The U.N. doesn’t matter? Then why b!tch about Saddam not complying with U.N. directives is the U.N. didn’t matter. Sounds like you support Saddam, then.

See ProA-hole and his kind see America as two distinct parts… The haves and have mores. The haves are us, the people, who currently deserve what the BushCo will let us have. The have mores are the elite, the Rove’s, the Pelosi’s, the chickhawks, the O’Liely’s, the CONyers, … they’re ABOVE the law and therefore “untouchable”. It’s a cultural identity that should have been refuted when Ford pardoned Nixon. Since then, elites in DC and their upper crust supporters have felt like THEY are the have mores…

  477. Keith says:

July 18, 2003 — President Bush told a group of surprised reporters that Saddam Hussein had refused to permit weapons inspectors to return to Iraq: “And we gave him a chance to allow the inspectors in, and he wouldn’t let them in. And therefore, after a reasonable request, we decided to remove him from power.” [Washington Post]

  478. RandomChaos says:

Although Iraq was cooperative on what inspectors called “process”—allowing inspectors access to suspected weapons sites, for example—it was only marginally cooperative in answering the questions surrounding its weapons programs. Unable to resolve its differences with Security Council members who favored strengthening and continuing weapons inspections, the United States abandoned the inspections process and initiated the invasion of Iraq on March 19.

  479. Keith says:

After bugging the Security Council’s phones the US realized the vote would be 11-4 against the invasion. Not even considering a Big Five veto.

And nights in the political wilderness can get cold, so let him have his little blankie. Seven years ago we were attacked by a bunch of fanatics that started planing the attacks of 9/11 long before G.W. Bush was elected president. I think that the name of the President that failed to protect us was Bill Clinton. He will go in history as the only President that failed to approve that Osama be killed. He wanted the CIA to arrest him.
George W. Bush and Dick Chaney have saved your asses for the past seven years.

  488. Gregor Samsa says:

I think that the name of the President that failed to protect us was Bill Clinton.
    ~P Alfonso

But the man who was living in the White House at the time of the attacks didn’t fail to protect the US?

Wow… funny how responsibility falls exclusively on the guy whose shift had already ended.

He will go in history as the only President that failed to approve that Osama be killed.

And pray tell, how was he supposed to know that Obama would mastermind an attack years later?

Wouldn’t the guy who received a memo called “Bin Laden determined to strike in the US” share some of that responsibility? No? Why is that?

George W. Bush and Dick Chaney have saved your asses for the past seven years.

How did they do that, exactly? By invading a country that posed no threat and that didn’t have anything to do with 9/11?

Yeah, that is some vigorous defence, indeed.

You don’t have to thank them. I will do it for you.

And after you are done kissing the ground they walk on, you may want to consider a little therapy. Having a crush like that cannot be healthy.
