House conservatives plan another political stunt tomorrow.

Just as they did last Friday, a group of House Republicans will engage in political theater on the floor tomorrow, staging a fake session on gas prices. Congress adjourned last week, but some conservatives remained behind to clamor in the dark chamber for a vote on oil drilling. Politico reports that “Republicans felt they got a lot of good press out of Friday’s ‘revolt,’ so they will be back at it again.”

UPDATE: Drew Hammill, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said last Friday: “In a week where Exxon Mobil made the largest quarterly profits by a U.S. corporation, Republicans are staying in Washington to argue that Big Oil deserves more taxpayer lands. Republicans must think Big Oil is paying them by the hour.”

UPDATE II: On Fox News’ Beltway Boys, Weekly Standard editor Fred Barnes admitted the move by the House conservatives was a “stunt.” “It’s a stunt, but sometimes stunts work,” he said. Watch it:

Oh, yes! Taxpayers want their money spent on cheap political stunts that just prove Congress isn’t serious about solving the problem. Bravo, Republicans! Way to demonsrate how much more fiscally responsible you are than the Democrats.

    Q U E S T I O N:

Should this “off shore”(read to pad Big OIL profits) succeed, what will be the price of gas when this resource hits the pumps in seven years? $8.00/ gallon? … and to think, no one wants to discuss this reality because after all, reality has a liberal bias… YES?

I mean, imagine if the conversation was about the price of fuel in seven years when this resource hits the pumps… THEN THE PEOPLE WILL SEE THIS AS WHAT IT IS… a PROFIT windfall for CORPORATION$ and even a higher cost of living for the average Joe Human. Each dollar increase to fuel is costing us more, not only AT the pump, but on the shelves, too. Who can afford a $5.00 loaf of bread now? Say in seven years, how much will that loaf of bread cost… $8.00? Think about it people… ANWAR and “off shore” is NOT(!) the end all solution. In fact, it is a way to the END… PERIOD!

It will force people around the world to choose between staying feed, or going hungry… and when faced with this dilemma, people get very, VERY angry and desperate.

Think, people… 5 million coffins, hidden in the hills, waiting, ready for use…

    They’re not doing the people’s business…
… They’re doing the bidding of the Corporation’s business.

    THIS MAN is a pioneer…
… I bet EXXON would like to see him fail.
    For humanity’s sake, I pray he doesn’t!

… WHO WIN’S WHEN CORPORATIONS DICTATE POLICY?

Somewhere right about now is when one of our “libertarian” or “conservative” trolls would ordinarily get very snarky about Congress “wasting time” on trivia. Of course, that’s when it’s Democrats investigating the behavior of the Bushies, but still . . they’ve always made it very clear that they’re not partisan, but rather standing on principle.

Eh, maybe they’ve just got the evening off. I’m sure they will weigh in on the horrid waste of time in Congress. Any minute now.

It’s what they do. Don’t you remember their frantic return to Washington to pass “right to life” legislation when Terry Schiavo was taken off life support? Or how about a similar election year ploy with the “defense of marriage act”?

    It’s called “wedge issue exploitation”.

  40. Innocent Bystander says:

They’ve had 7-1/2 years to deal with energy issues…and 3 months before a Presidential election, they suddenly are concerned about energy? After rolling over and delivering everything Big Oil wanted since before 2000?

  43. Xisithrus says:

Polls show the GOP is on the right side of the issue; a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll released last week showed 75% of Americans support increased oil drilling in the U.S., while 71% support increased drilling offshore and 56% support drilling for oil in ANWR. That’s up eight points since a poll in early March 2006, when 48% supported Arctic oil exploration. Polls repeatedly show energy issues and gas prices are as high a priority for Americans as the war in Iraq. More than half of voters say their top priority is either the economy, energy or gas.

Still, Americans have yet to associate high gas prices with the Democratic Party, a critical connection Republicans have to make if the issue will benefit them in November. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll two weeks ago showed voters trusted Democrats to handle gas prices better by a twenty-point margin, a significant lead on any issue. But there are signs, at least, that the lead might be shrinking: In January, Democrats led by a whopping twenty-eight points.

You’ve had the obstruction of the Senate Republicans explained to you on many occassions. Why do you persist in blaming the Democrats for all of the failures of our Congress? Do you post stupid comments like this because you honestly forgot how wrong they are, or are you just trying to help the conservatives by clouding up the issue so that no one is sure who’s telling the truth any more?

Your comment also shows a complete ignorance of what the Republicans are doing with this sleazy stunt. The Republicans want the oil companies to get richer now so that the prices we pay at the pump will go down in about ten years. That is what they are “fighting” for. You do understand that, don’t you? The Republicans are not fighting for your interests.

I really don’t know whether I should scorn you or pity you. If I knew exactly what your level of sincerity truly was, I might be able to decide.

I copied that from an article from realclearpolitics. Because I posted it does not mean I believe it as mostly FOX watchers answer their polls. I left it in to give some continuity and the fact that although FOX folks are for drilling most US citizens dont think the GOP is all that capable of lowering prices, hence the political theatrics. If the GOP wants more drilling then they can create some legislation, instead the legislation they are obstructing has more to do with regulating oil speculators.

Hounding a popular sitting president over an extra-marital affair , and trying to imeach him over that transgression , is putting America and the American people before self , right you GOP tool ?

Mr. Bush was critical of Al Gore in the 2000 campaign for being part of “the administration that’s been in charge” while the “price of gasoline has gone steadily upward.” In December 1999, in the first Republican primary debate, Mr. Bush said President Clinton “must jawbone OPEC members to lower prices.”
