Photo of the day: Bush ‘warmly’ acknowledges indicted Sen. Stevens.

Today, President Bush stopped at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska and spoke to soldiers. The White House included Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) in the event, despite his recent indictment on corruption charges. The AP reports that Bush “acknowledged Stevens briefly and warmly, saying the military has no stronger friend. Josh Bolten, the president’s chief of staff, was seen chatting with Stevens after the president spoke.”

The White House has continued to stand by the embattled Stevens. When pressed by reporters last week on whether Stevens would still travel with Bush on his Alaska trip, press secretary Dana Perino stood firm, stating that the invitation “did not change” with Stevens’s indictment.

Bush forgot also to take Senator Craig with them in this trip.

  3. stateofthedivision says:

Stevens & Bush represent the Republican brand. Stevens is a shill for Alaskan oil companies, while Bush caters to the multinationals.

someone should indite Ron paul for all the money he’s swindled out of poor white trash. check out where they’re having their circle jerk fest the Target Center

  5. Roket says:

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say Senator Stevens looks bitter in that picture.

  6. PeaceMonkey says:

“President” Bush was later seen clearing tree stumps from the Stevens’ cottage barbeque pit area. He received a $26,000 charitable contribution for his efforts.

  7. spencers mom says:

Why would anyone think that a criminal wouldn’t be welcome at a Bush gathering?

    PEACE

Bush needs to stay friendly just in case they end up in the same cell block.

At least the old buzzard will have a nice place to enjoy his retirement–paid for with bribes and cashed in favors from GOP sources who will either have to go down with Stevens or turn against him–either way, he loses in November.

  11. Evergreen2U says:

What’s a little bribery amongst torturers?

Wonder what’s with the costume jacket? Everyone else seems to be in business clothes.

  14. Jane E. Schneider says:

From the linked article: “…China, trying to ensure the event is clean of controversy, has only intensified its repression of political dissent, religious expression and press coverage. Bush says he can and will candidly raise concerns about China’s human rights record to President Hu Jintao.” (italics mine)

Yeah, like he candidly spoke to Musharref about restoring Pakistan’s court system, and when Musharref said ‘No’, still gave him billions of dollars? In this case, Bush will is more likely to candidly ask the Chinese President for tips on repression of political dissent and press coverage.

  15. RUCerious says:

That looks like some kind of faux cheap military jacket. Can’t Theodore affort to shop somewhere other than thrift stores?

  16. Jane E. Schneider says:

Oops, bad editing…should be “In this case, Bush is more likely…” Sorry, it’s late!

  17. Jane E. Schneider says:

Thanks for the link, had enough, that article was very interesting, to say the least.

“Individuals in the protest zone are entitled by existing Denver city ordinance to utilize bullhorns. Additionally — as provided at the Pepsi Center public-viewing area — a stage/riser and amplification system (for example, speakers and a microphone) will be provided inside the area, with at least two speakers located outside the public-demonstration area and pointed at the delegate entrance/exit pathway.”

What the phuck? And this is in the same city that arrested the woman with the “McCain = Bush” sign?

Yes, and a few days ago when this paper reported she pleaded innocent to the charges you should have read the disrespectful comments from the bloggers about the 58 year old librarian.

The Denver Post is GOP and I try to blog here as much as possible.

  23. Count Istvan says:

Bush and Stevens are as thick as thieves.

  24. Jane E. Schneider says:

I saw the article about the protester, too, and read the comments. Then I registered and posted a comment, and did the thumbs up/thumbs down stuff – mostly thumbs down, of course! Why are the Dems having their convention there, anyway?

  25. gus smith says:

Deja vu all over again. How often have we seen this president show support for a member of his party or administration only to have the scoundrel ‘replaced’ or ‘leave to have more time with the family’ or because of some legal snare. I’ll start with the easy names that come to mind: Gonzales, Libby, Meir, Ridge, Ashcroft, Kerik, Tenet, Delay; please feel free to augment the list.

  26. had enough says:

Then I registered and posted a comment, and did the thumbs up/thumbs down stuff – mostly thumbs down, of course!
You probably got my thumbs up also. I like their system and so many of the posters need work with their facts.

  27. tuckgraph says:

Where’s Bush in the pic? I can see Colbert on the right, maybe Abramoff’s taller clone on the left. I’m sure Senator Stevens understands. No one wants to get on a crashing plane, But everyone wants to take a picture of one.

That pic is eerie. It looks like the Kremlin is in session. His choice of clothes, rich old white man outdoor drab golf flair, looks as if he’s ready to go to jail. Good!

Oh look the repugs are being repugs. This is some nasty stinkin shit. this is insane!

I would investigate the higher ups starting with the idiots in the above pic. Despicable!

This is another f-u portrait to the world. What’s so endearing about a crook? Clapping chimpettes. Dangerous!

  32. dumbstruck says:

Shouldn’t that be “allegedly shoot at American soldiers”

If you’re really trying to be fair…

  33. Above the Clouds says:

George Bush was in Alaska to put sprinkles on the turd that is Ted Stevens.

    Interesting.
Ted Stevens indicted equals guilty, yet folks who shoot at American soldiers, and are captured and held by our military in Guantanamo, are innocent until proven guilty.
Seeing just a bit of hypocrisy here.
    August 5th, 2008 at 6:34 am

and US soldiers who indiscriminately murder civilians, children the elderly and other non-combatants are welcomed home as fuuking heroes and will NEVER face any accountability?

    go figger …

  37. trollsbwild says:

He will be found guilty. GWB will pardon him immediately after the trial just in time for the election.

If the people of Alaska are dumb enough to elect him, they deserve what they get.

  38. katy says:

ok – who IS that woman seated at stevens’ left?

last week i looked around for pics of “ted stevens, wife” on google images and that was not the woman pictured in several photos and labeled his wife…

    is that a new one???

  39. politicalx says:

He really does not look happy about it though. Anyone would think he was guilty.

Surrounded by the indicted, stevens and bolten. Bush has nothing to show the troops but distain for their service.
May the troops know the truth rather than the lies that put them in harms way for bush’s sake.

Stevens is wearing a flight jacket, something that he may be entitled to since he flew in China and Burma during WWII and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and other medals.

    August 5th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

He’s still a greedy old idiot. “No! I won’t give back the money!” (for his infamous bridge.) “It’s a series of tubes!” (the scientific explanation for ‘the internets.’)

With all due respect for his military service, he hasn’t been serving his country well lately.

  47. joanie says:

Stevens is a joke. Hopefully he is going down the tubes. Only a few Alaskans greeted him at his headquarters….they were called and those to come were personally invited….they did not let the general public know Stevens would be arriving…because there would be a lot of “boooos” by the regular folk!!!
Stevens wants the trial in Ak. because there will certaintly be one “Stevens’ Worshiper” on the jury.
Steven spoke to an energy group today. Mostly native alaskans…who Stevens has taken terrible advantage of….Stevens puts his big friends in the Corporations and they function on no bid contracts all over the world.

  48. republicanSScareme says:

Looks like the number of people the President will have to pardon is piling up. The only jail time that old coot will see is on a Monopoly board.
