Exclusive: Auto Makers Deflate McCain’s Ignorant Hot Air On Value Of Proper Tire Inflation

In a series of public events today, John McCain has ramped up his disingenuous attack on the impact proper tire inflation can have in saving energy. At a rally in South Dakota, a hyper McCain yelled to the crowd: “My opponent doesn’t want to drill. He doesn’t want nuclear power. He wants you to inflate your tires.” Earlier in the day, he said: “We’re not going to achieve energy independence by inflating our tires.”

Watch a compilation:

Of course, Obama has never suggested that proper tire pressure would “achieve energy independence.” McCain’s insincere demagoguing of this issue overlooks a crucial and important fact – ensuring proper tire pressure is a better and more immediate response than oil drilling to the nation’s pain at the pump.

In a post on the Wonk Room, Charles Territo, the director of communications for the Auto Alliance (which represents Chrysler, Ford, and GM, among others), notes some facts McCain should keep in mind:

• The Department of Energy estimates that 1.2 billion gallons of fuel were wasted in 2005 as a result of driving on under-inflated tires.

Fuel efficiency is reduced by 1% for every 3 PSI that tires are under-inflated.

• Proper tire inflation can save the equivalent of about 1 tank of gas per year.

Proper tire inflation also reduces CO2 emissions.

• Experts estimate that 25% of automobiles are running on tires with lower than recommended pressure, because people don’t know how to check their tires or don’t realize that tires naturally lose air over time.

Territo notes that the Auto Alliance sponsored tire pressure checks for members of Congress and their staff last week. “Surprisingly, we found that most drivers had tires between 5 and 7 pounds under inflated — some had tires under-inflated by as much as 20 pounds,” he writes. “This significantly reduced their vehicle’s fuel economy.” If conservatives truly want to take immediate action on energy, they can stop wasting time on political stunts and start checking their tires.

Digg It!

Update At his South Dakota rally, McCain yelled: “When I’m president of the United States, I’m not going to let them [Congress] go on vacation!” Brad Johnson documents McCain’s record of absenteeism on some important votes.
Update Sen. Barack Obama responds: "Now two points, one, they know they're lying about what my energy plan is, but the other thing is they're making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant."
Update Sen. McCain said tonight, "Obama a couple of days ago said that we ought to all inflate our tires, and I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it."

  20. Bob says:

Maybe McCain’s yelling will help him like it helped Howard Dean. The problem really is that most (if not all) of the voters that support the oldest guy ever think that Obama’s energy policy is entirely made up of ‘inflate your tires’. Relying on one candidate to tell you what the other will do is not a smart way to vote. Unfortunately, that’s how Americans vote.

  21. raynman says:

Why should we assume that an energy policy created by the Oil Companies would work now when it worked oooohh so well when Cheney asked them last time??

  22. Bozo The Neoclown says:

    “TripleKick 7 Says:

Yeah, because only elitists tune up their cars. What an assclown.

  23. ralph the wonder llama says:

I don’t think TK knows what “elitist” means.

He’s probably got a clear idea what “idiot” means, though. He should, anyway — he’s had enough experience with people referring to him that way.

  24. JMOHR says:

Now turn it into an ad that can be used to attack McCain. A suggestion:

    1. Camera pans across a crowded freeway with thousands of cars. Voice over: “The high cost of gas is causing suffering to millions of American family. One candidate promises us relief in ten to twenty years by drilling new wells and building new nuclear reactors.”

    2. Camera panning from windmills, to fuel cell car to hybrid and any other alternative fuel method. Voice over: “Barak Obama wants to help and help now. Everything from taxing windfall profits to relieve working and middle class families to simple common sense ideas such as inflating your tires and tuning your cars just like NASCAR drivers and automotive experts have long advised. In the mean time we can develop new
technologies to reduce our oil dependence.”

    3. Clip from McCain talking about offshore drilling providing only psychological relief.

    4. Picture of Obama with voice over: Put it another way, you can put air in your tires and reduce gas consumption by 1.2 billion gallons a year and start a comprehensive energy program. Or, your can vote for John McCain and put money into the pockets of big oil while they drill holes in the ground and have all that psychological relief. Guess we know why oil interests have contributed more than $2 million to the McCain campaign.”

I would also suggest that Obama fight fire with fire. Tire gages cost 89 cents. Why not sell them for $1.00 with “Vote for Obama” imprinted on them. Make a big press deal out of how the Republicans sell them for a $25 contribution with a nice tag line of : “Every thing is more expensive when it comes from Republicans.”

  25. ralph the wonder llama says:

Tanqueray, why can’t you get the terminology right?

    It’s “terrorist fist-jab”.

I know you’ve warned about that by your superiors, but I won’t report you this time.

  26. belac says:

Assuming these two TP facts to be true, and assuming the average tank of gasoline to be 16 gallons, this means that the average driver would save 4 gallons of gasoline per year (16 * .25). 4 gallons of gasoline per year is not enough for us to achieve energy independence.

~250 million cars registered in U.S. x 4 gals each = 1 billion gallons of gasoline saved a year.
This is roughly equal to saving 512,000 barrels of oil a year.
I’d call that a pretty good first step, especially considering that it will yield immediate results and actually reduces pollution and consumption instead of increasing it.

True. Does this mean that McCain is against inflating our tires? That’s what it sounds like. McCain wants us riding around on our rims, like a carjacker who’s run over spike strips and insists he can still outrun the police.

Come to think of it, that’s a pretty good metaphor for the way Bush has run the country. And McSame wants to continue the same policies.

Obama never said that keeping tires properly inflated would allow us to achieve energy independence — not all by itself, anyway. Of course, neither will off-shore drilling.

But I can see the truth isn’t going to stop you from throwing this lie about “what Obama said” at us every chance you get, in some naive hope that if you just say it enough, it will be true.

FEDERICO PENA: Well, again, it’s a compromise solution. But the idea here is that it reflects Sen. Obama’s position, which is we cannot drill our way out of this problem. We’ve got to invest, as he’s proposing, $15 billion a year in alternative fuels, in alternative technology.

We’ve got to increase our corporate average fuel economy to make our cars more fuel efficient. And he’s proposing a 4 percent increase per year over a number of years.

We’ve got to continue to invest in energy efficiency, helping people retrofit their homes, major companies retrofitting their buildings, increasing investment in capturing heat from major manufacturing plants, and using that again to generate more electricity.

He wants to support a renewable portfolio standard, which means that, by the year 2012, 10 percent of our electricity would be produced from green energy, solar, wind, et cetera.

10% by 2012? Who believes that, seriously?

And where is the $150 billion going to come from?

Thanks for finally acknowledging that Obama’s energy plan is something more than simply “inflating our tires” as McSame and the GOP bobbleheads have been repeating.

Your critique of “who believes that, seriously?” is not sufficient, however. Please state something more substantial than blank partisan cynicism for your skeptical response.

Perhaps part of the $150 billion could come from oil and gas lease royalties that are currently not collected because of tax breaks and loopholes?

Obama recently signaled that he would be willing to compromise in some form, if the details of the plan helped the nation. Why you clowns think that’s “flip-flopping” when your candidate has said he doesn’t support a bill he wrote is beyond me.

Thank you, Obama, for responding to these liars & deceivers. It’s time to nail them for the garbage they keep spewing. Republicans prove over & over that they are not interested in the least in conserving oil, they are only interested in pandering to big oil companies, and occupying countries that produce oil, while ignoring countries without oil. Republicans & many of their big supporters are either obscenely rich oil merchants, or lobbyists for oil, or are getting funding from these greedy oil merchants by pandering to them (i.e. McCain).

  85. martskers says:

And, of course, now that saving fuel is more

air hoses at most stations, or installed
vending machines that dispense air for your
tires (at 75 cents a pop—in the rare circumstances where they work). In other words, the oil companies have actually made it harder (or at least more expensive) to save money by properly inflating your tires. Gee, what a surprise!

Right. Like I said. We ARE drilling offshore.

Obama has said nothing about stopping offshore drilling. He is against expanding that drilling to areas currently protected.

If you’re not being obtuse, then you’re being dishonest.

    Which is it?

Jeb Bush and Interior Secretary Gale Norton told reporters after a brief meeting with the president [Bush] that the actions will help preserve the Florida Panhandle’s pristine coastline.

“It just didn’t seem right that 25 miles off that coast there would be the possibility of drilling, and today that possibility no longer exists,” Bush said.

It’s not (necessarily) about ignorance. Conservation is an effective strategy because every bit of energy saved goes directly against the bottom line. The only problem is, it doesn’t make anyone any richer.

  101. DieNowForPeace says:

The Congressional ban on drilling expires on Sept 30, 2008.

You mean the “ban” that the oil industry supported, cause oil from the mid-east was cheaper to buy than it was to drill and pump our own. Now that the price is sky high, it has become “desirable” (read PROFITABLE) to drill domestically.

Just ask any Texan who’s witnessed the rise, fall, and recent rise of the local “oil industry”.

I heard that commercial on the radio just yesterday. Are the car companies also misguided to do this?

I dont think so, its a selling feature and you dont have to physically get out of the vehicle and check pressures. The cost of such a system is relatively cheap. It would increase the cars value more than the system actually cost.

    August 5th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Sure Belac. 512,000 barrels assuming 100% participation. That’s a big, faulty assumption.

Unreal. The troll offers statistics and draws a conclusion from them.

Never. Neither will offshore drilling. We’re going to need to reduce our level of consumption as we transition to alternative energy sources. However, for as long as we drive cars that run on fossil fuels, we’re going to be importing oil. A realistic solution has to involve reducing consumption.

  143. Xisithrus says:

    Your original claim was:

No car can adjust tire pressures on fly. What they have is onboard pressure sensors that allow you to monitor pressure and alert you when you have a low tire. I’ve had this on my car since ‘04.

Do I have that about right?

And you STILL haven’t even acknowledged that the H1 was a commercially-producing vehicle based on a military vehicle. It was NOT a military vehicle.

You have been so pwned. It might actually make you feel better to admit it, you know.

If you can find one garage or one oil change place that won’t check your tire pressure and give you free air I’ll show you an idiot who will go out of business soon. Why don’t you just STFU when you don’t know what you’re talking about.

The bigger picture seems to evade you completly. You seem obsessed with encapsulating Obama’s energy policy into one statement made off they cuff.

You are beginning to sound a lot like: Obama bad/mccain good

but you don’t seem to be able to connect any of the dots.

    obamagr8 Says:
Fred, I will tell you exactly what I think.

We have serious energy problems in this country and the Democrat Party has painted themselves into a tight corner.

    There is no “Democrat Party”.

Unless of course, you also refer to the “Republic Party”…

We need short term answers and long term solutions and Obama’s plan seems to be short on the first.

And what are McSame’s “short term answers”?

Drilling in ANWAR? Drilling the OCS? Neither of these qualifies as a “short term answer”.

He’s in favor of oil companies developing “the 68 million acres already under lease” – but hasn’t given any kind of list or identified any of these lands.

You mean… the oil companies don’t know what lands they have under lease? They need Obama to tell them? Sheesh. How do they even put their pants on in the morning?

    What a maroon…

  190. belac says:

    We need short term answers

On the other hand, he is advocating investing $150 billion in alternative energy without giving much in the way of specifics. How is this money going to be divided, how much for solar or wind? Where is the money going to come from?

I guess the troll can’t see the irony of a chimpy leghumper being concerned about how Obama would apportion resources.

Where was your concern, when Bush was piling up debt to the heavens?

You sure were nowhere to be seen for the last seven years.

Strange, that when you guys are about to be sent to the political wilderness, you suddenly appear, all concerned about tax dollars.

    Give me a freakin’ break.

  193. dbadass says:

Well we could turn the damn lights off when not needed, unplug the vampire electronics, and stop leaving the tv on for the cat…

Obama: “Finally, I will call on businesses, government, and the American people to meet the goal of reducing our demand for electricity 15% by the end of the next decade. This is by far the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to reduce our energy consumption – and it will save us $130 billion on our energy bills.”

How do we cut power by 15% while increasing the use of electric cars?

Y’know, those of us who still humor you would find it helpful if you’d think to include links to passages you’re cut-and-pasting. That way we can see if you’re quoting a legitimate news source or not, and whether you’re including full context, which you have a habit of not doing.

Now, when has Obama proposed such a goal of “increasing the use of electric cars”? Or is this another wrinkle you’ve pulled from your nether regions? The closest thing i can find on The Google is a proposal to add 1 million Hybrid electric cars to the nation’s highways. Nothing about straight electric cars.

And besides, it’s conceivable that we can cut 15% of our electricity use with increased efficiency in technology and making it a national priority. Solar collectors would help make homes energy self-sufficient and while not using less energy, strictly speaking, would save the conversion of more costly and/or damaging fuels to electricity.

But really, you don’t deserve to be taken seriously by anybody until you man up on the numerous falsehoods and stupid things you tried to pass off as right-wing wisdom this afternoon.

We’ll tell you when you tell us how McCain is going to balance the budget while waging a 100 year war in Iraq and absolutely never raising any taxes. You go first.

  197. MapleStreet says:

To get away from the troll hockey, Obama’s plan is multipronged – not JUST a tire gauge.

Are we willing to put all cards on the table ? Are we willing to reexamine mass transit ? Are we willing to have cars smaller than Hummers ? Are we willing to change our ownership pattern of cars – one model would be small electric cars for in-town use/commutes of 1 or 2 folks and pools of larger cars for when needed ?

  198. Gregor Samsa says:

Uh… need I point out the obvious?

Hybrid cars do not depend 100% on the electric grid to generate the electricity they need.

And consumption of electricity can still be lowered -even with an increased number of hybrid cars, plug-in or not- if businesses started turning their bloody lights off at night, when there is nobody on the premises.

As for the average American home, we consume so much electricity with those handy-dandy gadgets that need to be plugged-in at all times (think of all the devices that you can turn on with a remote control. Or the alarm clocks. Or the clock in the microwave oven. Or… you get the idea)

It’s like the troll has never set foot in a house or a commercial/business building. Simply amazing.

And yes, I also find it amazing that the troll should be all concerned now with Obama’s savings proposal, when he has no problem with Bush’s pet war in the Middle East -that sink hole that is swallowing billions of dollars a year…

  199. Gregor Samsa says:

As Shayne already said: obamagr8, you don’t know what you are talking about. You’ve been smacked up and down the thread. Anyone with just a bit more self-awareness would have apologised for being so obtuse and left a long time ago.

  205. dbadass says:

Ah geez the stupid anole eyes word. TP get over it

“An Associated Press computer “a knoll e sis” of Bureau of Land Management records found that 80 percent of federal lands leased for oil and gas production in Wyoming are producing no oil or gas. Neither are 83 percent of the leased acres in Montana, 77 percent in Utah, 71 percent in Colorado, 36 percent in New Mexico and 99 percent in Nevada.”

  206. dbadass says:

ralph do you mind handling this? It looks pretty simple. I just have a bit of a tummy ache and my kids and I have a big day planned tomorrow. Thanks…

ralph, talking to Opi is like talking to a two year old. Why, why, why, I want it, why, why, why.

  209. Gregor Samsa says:

George Samsa, apply a bit of rational thought.[...] Unplugging your clocks will save that much?
    ~obamagr8

First, that’d be Gregor, for you.

Second, don’t talk to me about rational thought. If there is something that you Bush cultists absolutely lack is both rational and thought.

Third, it is a well known fact that appliances “leak” electricity. And no, it is not just the clocks. Did you read what I wrote? I said “all those devices you can turn on with a remote control”.

Here, for the benefit of other posters, since it’s obvious you are a lost case:

According to America’s Department of Energy, national residential electricity consumption in 2004 was 1.29 billion megawatt hours (MWh)-5% of which is 64m MWh. The wasted energy, in other words, is equivalent to the output of 18 typical power stations.
    Standby Power

A lot of that energy could be saved if we all actually turned our appliances off.

Fourth, do you really doubt that oil companies are sitting on unexplored federal land leases? Do you really need to be fed, hand-to-mouth, this information?

Oh, what am I asking? Of course you do. Here is the link to the Bureau of Land Management: BLM – Oil And Gas. Click on the “Interactive Lease Map” link. That should get you started. Assuming you can muster enough brain power, that is.

See, I told you not to talk to me about thought, or rational.

  210. Gregor Samsa says:

Don’t even try to get the higher ground here, obamagr8. You’ve been proven wrong time and again, it’s embarrassing.

“Getting your tires at the right pressure won’t help. Oh wait, it will. The Hummer is a military vehicle. Oh wait, it’s civilian. No wait, it’s a car. Oh wait, it’s not”

    LOL

I never makes any sense to me how everyone screams that we need to do something. If something drastic is done, people get up in arms. If nothing is done, people get up in arms. If people suggest something simple such as “make sure your car is running primo” people get all bent out of shape. This ideology isn’t just exclusive to Republicans, I know plenty of people who are are for Obama that think this idea isn’t a solution. It would seem personal accountability is out the window. After look at all the numbers and theoretical savings I could have I’m gonna make sure I switch the circuit breaker off my house when I go out. Things add up after a while, I guess everyone just wants government to just handle everything without us doing a damn thing..
