O’Reilly Rejects Right-Wing Defense Of Big Oil’s Massive Profits: Go Tell That To ‘Some Old Lady In Minnesota’

In the past week, conservatives have jumped to the defense of Big Oil in order to justify their own push for more offshore drilling. On Sunday, House Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) backed up Exxon Mobil, saying that the company’s critics should be overjoyed that an “American company made money.” On Laura Ingraham’s radio show on Friday, former senator Rick Santorum said that Exxon’s record-setting quarterly profit of $11.7 billion was not “a huge profit.”

Last night on The O’Reilly Factor, Karl Rove joined in, declaring that oil companies “pay a lot in taxes.” But this new right-wing meme was too much even for Bill O’Reilly, who said that Big Oil should “donate 2 percent of their profits for the last four quarters to a fund that would help struggling Americans pay their heating bills.” O’Reilly also contacted the top five corporations, who were only “lukewarm” to his idea:

O’REILLY: Now we contacted the five big oil corporations. And to say the response to my idea was lukewarm is to be kind. Exxon and Chevron pointed out they pay a huge amount of taxes to the government, which is true. But what about directly helping those in need? Not much enthusiasm so far.

Watch it:

Throughout the segment, Rove acted as Big Oil’s top lobbyist. He said that O’Reilly’s proposal was unnecessary because of the federal LIHEAP grant, which provides home energy assistance to low-income families. Rove said that this funding was “probably adequate to help with most of the problem that we face this fall.”

However, President Bush and his conservative allies in Congress have repeatedly blocked funding to the program. Last November, Bush vetoed LIHEAP. Just last week, Senate Republicans successfully blocked renewed funding for the program.

Digg It!

Transcript:

O’REILLY: So here is my proposal. I am asking the five major American oil companies, Chevron, Occidental, Conoco Phillips, ExxonMobil and Hess to donate 2 percent of their profits for the last four quarters to a fund that would help struggling Americans pay their heating bills. In that way, the oil companies could pay back their country, a nation that has allowed them to prosper more than any other concern in the history of civilization. A 2 percent charitable disbursement would alleviate the suffering of tens of millions of Americans and not hurt the oil companies much at all.

Last year, they made a combined $80 billion in profit, a record amount for any industry at any time. Now we contacted the five big oil corporations. And to say the response to my idea was lukewarm is to be kind. Exxon and Chevron pointed out they pay a huge amount of taxes to the government, which is true. But what about directly helping those in need? Not much enthusiasm so far. If just one of the oil companies would establish such a charitable fund, the goodwill that corporation would receive would more than make up for the money spent, as millions of Americans would buy that company’s oil over the others. [...]

O’REILLY: All right, with us now, Fox News analyst Karl Rove. All right. I don’t know where — you begin where you want to begin here. I got - I want the oil companies to help out. Is that stupid? Am I naive?

KARL ROVE, FORMER BUSH ADVISOR: Well, look, they pay a lot in taxes. And we actually do have a program, the federal taxpayers pay for, call LIHEAP, for Low Income Housing Assistance, which pays for assistance to people who live in cold parts of the country during the winter, and lower income families who live in hot parts of the country during the summer. And those moneys are probably, you know, have been plussed up the last couple of years and probably adequate to help with most of the problem that we face this fall.

O’REILLY: OK, but there’s nothing wrong with the American oil companies kicking in, if they would, this money.

ROVE: Yes.

O’REILLY: — and saying, look, if you have a problem, we’re going to help you because we love America and we want Americans to be warm. I think that would be a good PR thing. I think it’s a noble thing to do. Am I wrong?

ROVE: Well, look, the companies have a responsibility to their shareholders.

O’REILLY: Oh, come on. How much money are you going to make? [...]

O’REILLY: In the banking industry, it’s competitive. In the oil industry, they operate on the largesse of the government. They and the government are partners, as you know.

ROVE: I disagree with that. I think it’s very competitive in the oil business. Who can find it and get it out of the ground at the cheapest price possible?

O’REILLY: All right, well, in my town, the four gas stations on each corner charge the same. [...]

O’REILLY: A couple of pennies for every shareholders. And you’re going to be stingy about that so some old lady in Minnesota.

ROVE: Yes, couple of pennies on - they make 8 cents on a dollar. So you’re asking them to give up probably about a quarter of that.

O’REILLY: I’m telling you, Teddy Roosevelt would be on my side. Teddy Roosevelt.

ROVE: He wouldn’t be in favor of (INAUDIBLE).

Lets test Darylls Google skills. How much in subsidies does big oil get from the government Daryll?

  15. christopher wiwi Says:

Hey Daryll, how come the SHRUB vetoed the LIHEAP bill, doen`t he want help the old lady in Minnesota? And to think that Hugo Chavez donates heating oil to the folks of New England and our own Gov`t veto`s a bill and the big oil companies won`t donate any funds to help the people they are screwing,go figure..... You would think that true Americans help each other in a time of need, but all the REICH can do or say is we pay our taxes and that should be enough, well it s not enough when people can`t afford heating oil or gas to go to work or afford to put food on the table. You people on the Reich and your zealousnees for religion are who claim to walk in the paths of rightousness are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.

The rethugs are just impossible. I follow the US political scene very closely, but I didn't realize that the subsidy program existed in theory and that the funding was consistently blocked by them. This is more "support the troops" talk; say it out loud but quietly prevent the support from happening.

I also have my doubts about the percentage of profit that rove says that oil companies make on a dollar. I'm not sure what he really means. If one company made $11+ billion, then the number of dollars flowing through their hands is nearly uncountable.

  24. Xisithrus Says:

Hey Daryll, if Exxon can hog money then why is it wrong to hog gas? You do realize that you undermine your own argument thru your illogical logic, right?

Gas prices are not high because people are hogging gas, gas prices are high because big oil is hogging money and I can point to gas demand being down because people ARE driving less, not more, silly sow.

I agree. I believe both parties serve the same corporate masters.

These are the financial powers that fund their campaigns and put them into office, so it should be surprising.

I wonder if it would clean things up if campaigns were not allowed to take money from companies and could only accept donations from individuals, and only in small amounts. And then we get rid lobbying. Just a thought...

  31. StratRat Says:

The current price of gas is inflated by at least 35% due to the speculators and the rigged markets they operate in. The cost of oil is not in the $3.00-$4.00 per gallon range. Speculators will drive up the price to maximize their profits - up today, down tomorrow. They make their money on the movement of the bids, day in and day out.

BTW, most speculators are wealthy themselves, so they don't care what the price of gas is in your neighborhood. Keep that in mind whenever a pundit speaks about gas prices. If the pundit is wealthy, they don't care what the price is. And if they don't care about the price, why are you listening to them?

You are subsidizing these institutions with your money. Some $18 BILLION (if memory serves) in subsidies to the oil companies. How can you possibly justify that?

You want people to conserve, yet your party has fitted our economy around massive consumption. You follow up with no proposals for widespread alternative fuels.

You know what else is a fallacy I get tired of reading? That conservatives are the better employees around our nation, hence your "lazy arse" comment. So you and darlaloon expect the little guy to curb his already meager consumption so you can enjoy a little more on top of your already massive consumption on the cheap?

  50. shoeless Says:

This whole argument about imported oil is a gross over-simplification. Exxon doesn't care where it gets it's oil, as long as they get it as cheaply as possible. The only reason they want federal leases is to lock up as much US puclic land, and off-shore areas as they can for future use. They pay very little in royalties, get huge tax breaks, and the executives squirrel away their incomes in the Cayman Islands. So, the US is a very profitable place for them to do business. But, that domestic production does almost nothing for the American public.

The transfer of wealth is not so much from the US to foreign governments, but from US consumers to multi-national corporations. Imported or domestic, oil production will not go to benefit the American public.

Real, cute, and you wonder why the Democratic Congress has a low approval rating. Because they refuse to take responsibility for their own actions.

Not sure what your point is, D -- are you disputing my contention that oil companies have no interest in tax breaks that the government hands out?

By the way, you might want to check out the real numbers behind the "Democratic Congress" and its low approval ratings.

Latest from pollingReport had Congress at 22%, that is true. But it showed Democrats in Congress polling at 36% and Republicans at 18%.

So it seems that it's the Republican Congress that's dragging down the approval rating of the entire body.

And you work, what? five days a week? So you use your SUV "for work". What duties does your work for an D0D contractor entail that require the space of an SUV?

  77. Shayne Says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:

    NO SHAYNE!

    DON’T SAY THOSE WORDS!

NEVER SAY THOSE WORDS IF YOU EVER WANT TO SEE DARYLL AGAIN!!!

Wishful thinking on your part ralph. Only a wreath of garlic and a wooden stake will chase him away.

  78. Zooey Says:

    Daryll Says:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My vehicle guide says 22mpg on the highway.
    August 5th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

That's our Daryll, he'll believe anything someone else tells him or puts in writing.

Oy...I wonder if he's actually worked out the mileage for himself?

  79. Shayne Says:

Daryll, do you fill your blowup doll with the methane you spew so you can drive in the carpool lane?

  80. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    Daryll Says:
Okay, the guide says between 18-22 mpg on the highway.

And city? What does it say?

You can't just take the outlying number of the most favorable circumstance and claim that it represents the mileage you get.

  81. Leftside Annie Says:

    Daryll's a gas hog!! Daryll's a gas hog!!

Jebus is really gonna be pissed at you, D. You better hide.

  82. Hussein McCain Says:

Daryll, I agree that it is natural for corporations to seek maximum profits. That's why capitalism doesn't give us the life God wants for us. God=Love=Notcapitalism

  83. Xisithrus Says:

Daryll Says: Okay, the guide says between 18-22 mpg on the highway.

You dont know what your vehicle gets?

Get a gas can, fill it up. Fill up your truck, write down the mileage. Drive till you run out. recheck mileage and divide by gallons [26 gallon tank in Tahoe]

  84. Shayne Says:

Daryll if you can't figure out how to use the features on your truck why do you bother to buy it. Press the button and find out what kind of mileage you get. And what kind of an idiot buys a 2WD Tahoe because that's the only vehicle that would come close to that mileage. And I hate to step on your masculinity, or lack of it as the case may be, but everybody who knows anything can tell it's not 4wd just looking at it, wuss.

  85. Shayne Says:

And Daryll, I'm still waiting to hear what happened to "President Elect Huckabee"? (sorry ralph) Do you understand that little voice you think is God is actually your own schizophrenia or do you think God got it wrong? And if he's wrong about that how can you believe you'll have a place in heaven. Maybe God lies to you.

  86. Hussein McCain Says:

Darryl, God wants us to dream of and plan for a better life for all of the children on the planet. What is your dream for the children?

  87. Shayne Says:

X, he can't figure out how to press the button that will flash MPGs on his truck and you think he can figure it out manually? You are too kind to the idiot.

  88. DRxJ Says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:
And you work, what? five days a week? So you use your SUV “for work”. What duties does your work for an D0D contractor entail that require the space of an SUV?

Uh oh. You've got Parodyll reeling as he tries to remember all his fabrications.
This could get very interesting, if he doesn't disappear.

  89. Shayne Says:

    Daryll Says:
Ownership of my SUV has nothing to do with masculinity. Jesus has already deemed me a male. I use my vehicle to do God’s bidding (church sports leagues for kids, picking up those who need a ride to our sanctuary, etc.). Stop letting satan use you.

Ouch, looks like I touched a nerve. Don't let that stop you from seeking help though. Most physicians have plenty of free sample of Viagra and Cialis.

  90. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    Daryll Says:

Ownership of my SUV has nothing to do with masculinity. Jesus has already deemed me a male.

Daryll, you are one sick motherfu(ker.

That wasn't "Jesus" you idiot -- it was just some guy with long hair and a beard who saw you hanging out in the park.

  91. Xisithrus Says:

Stop letting satan use you. -Daryll

There was no Satan ever preached in early christianity, so your using that to demonize others is false.

  92. Zooey Says:

    Daryll Says:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jesus has already deemed me a male.
    August 5th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Lordy, Daryll didn't even know he was a boy until Jeebus told him so...

  93. Hussein McCain Says:

Darryl, You think life on Earth will end before our children grow up?

  94. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    Daryll Says:

By then, we’ll be caught up to meet him the air while those who chose not to serve him will be preparing for the White Throne of Judgement on earth or will already be in hell.

Hey Daryll, when that happens, can I have your Tahoe?

... I wonder if when preparing for the White Throne of Judgment, we'll have access to all the evidence against us so we can prepare a valid defense? Do you think God adheres to rules of discovery?

  95. DRxJ Says:

    Parodyll Says:

Ownership of my SUV has nothing to do with masculinity.
Yes it does when you're trying to overcompensate for an inferiority complex, or are just plain "small"

Jesus has already deemed me a male.

Wrong again. You're father's XY chromosone had something to do with it. The fella below the belt buckle is what deemed me a male. And I don't have to move my gut to try and find it!
I think our Lord Jesus has more important things to do then "deem" a sexual characteristic.

I use my vehicle to do God’s bidding (church sports leagues for kids, picking up those who need a ride to our sanctuary, etc.).

If my bidding, you mean toe tapping, don't ya, faux brown sugar lover.

    Stop letting satan use you.
Stop being lead by satan's false prophits!

  96. RUCerious Says:

Darlyy really needs that Big Manly Chevy Tahoe to run down defenseless baby deer.

  97. RUCerious Says:

By then, we’ll be caught up to meet him the air while those who chose not to serve him will be preparing for the White Throne of Judgement on earth or will already be in hell.

And Little Red Riding Hood said, "Why grandma, you have such big sharp teeth!"

  98. Xisithrus Says:

When you demonizing others you are judging and by judging others you become a sinner Daryll.

  99. Zooey Says:

    DRxJ Says:

And I don’t have to move my gut to try and find it!

    That's hot. ;)

  100. DRxJ Says:

I apologize for my horrendous spelling in post 112. Work can be such a hinder to proper bloggin'.

    Darn it all to heck!

  101. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    Daryll Says:
Yes. Time for his return is nigh.

So what's the big deal if you just tell me where you'll be leaving the keys to your Tahoe? You're not gonna be needing it.

  102. Hussein McCain Says:

Daryll, Do you believe, as the Bible says, that God is love?

  103. jerseyboyblue Says:

WTF?! Did Hell drop a degree?

  104. Xisithrus Says:

TripleKick 7 Says: Ah TP is so obsessed with O’Reilly and clearly jealous of his success. Your weird, persistent erection for Bill is very boring.

I suppose you can prove this opinion of yours? Fact is you cant.

  105. Hussein McCain Says:

TK 7, Do you agree that capitalism fails to provide the life God wants all of us to have, and that it is unsustainable and therefor doomed?

  106. RUCerious Says:

Geez, krippledick, your projection is disturbing.

  107. Shayne Says:

    Daryll Says:
By then, we’ll be caught up to meet him the air while those who chose not to serve him will be preparing for the White Throne of Judgement on earth or will already be in hell.

While you're getting that Viagra maybe you could get a littl thorazine. It will help get rid of those voices spewing all that "rapture" crap. Heck, it might even cure your erectile dysfunction.

  108. ralph the wonder llama Says:

X, asking TK to prove his opinion is unfair.

TK doesn't work in the medium of "fact". TK mainly works in the medium of "unsupportable allegations" and "crazy talk".

    It's his niche.

  109. DRxJ Says:

    Hey Parodyll!
    Is Satan real?

  110. ralph the wonder llama Says:

So does TK's appearance mean that Daryll is off duty now?

  111. shoeless Says:

    Daryll Says:

Jesus has already deemed me a male.

So, that's what Jesus and those other 12 guys were doing out in the desert all night. And I thought they were just drinking wine.

  112. mary Says:

Last I heard demand for oil had decreased but the OPEC had not yet decided to cut production...yet. Wouldn't want too much oil out there bringing the price down now would you?

Nice racket, when demand goes down they can just crank down production to keep prices "stable".

  113. Shayne Says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:

    Daryll Says:

By then, we’ll be caught up to meet him the air while those who chose not to serve him will be preparing for the White Throne of Judgement on earth or will already be in hell.

Hey Daryll, when that happens, can I have your Tahoe?

Hey ralph, you get over here and clean the coffee from my keyboard. I can't stop laughing to clean it up.

  114. Xisithrus Says:

X, asking TK to prove his opinion is unfair.

I thought he had mad Google skills!!

  115. shoeless Says:

    Hussein McCain Says:

Darryl, You think life on Earth will end before our children grow up?

He and his ilk are working on it.

  116. shoeless Says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:

Hey Daryll, when that happens, can I have your Tahoe?

Won't do you any good then ralph. Daryll and his kind aren't leaving until they burn up all the oil.

  117. Shayne Says:

Triplehick, could you go away and send Daryll back. You lack a certain panache that Daryll possesses.

  118. DRxJ Says:

    Helloooo?
    Parodyll?
    One simple question:
    Is satan real?

  119. McWars Says:

    TripleKick 7 Says:

Ah TP is so obsessed with O’Reilly and clearly jealous of his success. Your weird, persistent erection for Bill is very boring.

I'll reduce my already low energy consumption if you reduce your high consumption of paint chips. Sherwin-Williams will then be jealous of your success, to be reflected in next quarter's earning loss.

  120. DRxJ Says:

How is a thread agreeing with O'Lielly considered "irrational, hating obsession"?
    DribbleDick 7.
Did you actually read the thread?
Or are you just hatin' to be hatin'?

  121. Hussein McCain Says:

TK 7, Wasn't it nice to see someone on Fox dispute Rove, and for whatever reason, stick up for poor people?

  122. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    TripleKick 7 Says:
    Xis,
Practically every day TP has at least one thread mentioning O’Reilly.

Doing a quick TP search, I count seven during the month of July. So if by "practically every day" TK means "once every four to five days" then he's got a point.

  123. barfly Says:

    Tripplekick:

He’s also much more entertaining than you TP bloggers, so just accept it and get over it.

Says the troll who's here every frikkin' day.

  124. Shayne Says:

    TripleKick 7 Says:

boohoohoo. Tell us triplehick how you can run interference for Daryll and be on your knees under Billo's desk at the same time?

  125. gummitch Says:

    TripleKick 7 Says:

Ah TP is so obsessed with O’Reilly and clearly jealous of his success. Your weird, persistent erection for Bill is very boring.

Do you think TP chooses topics to keep you entertained? I'm pretty sure that if you're bored, all you have to do is find another blog to visit. Or read a book, that might be a change (and a challenge).

I see you're all the way up to 7 now with the login. Maybe someone is trying to send you a message.

  126. ralph the wonder llama Says:

So I guess if Daryll's under fire for non-biblical reasons, they don't bother to summon bitblt. They figure TK can handle middle relief in that case.

  127. Shayne Says:

McWars, 3K's paint chip consumption won't hurt Sherwin Williams' bottom line. He only eats those vintage lead filled paint chips. He's an elitist.

  128. bentley1 Says:

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s called a free market. There is no crime for a company making a significantly huge profit. Don’t blame the Oil companies, blame yourselves for being gas hogs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, I haven't driven a car since 86, but i'm paying for it at the supermarket.
seems like transporting goods effects everyone.
Your boy bush certainly has messed this country up
    tony and lido

  129. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Oil companies are not part of a "free market". They are part of a monopoly, a cartel. We, the consumers, have no option for alternative options.

  130. MapleStreet Says:

They are so neocon that they left O'Reilley in the dust ?????

Dumb Question: Oil pays a lot of taxes. However, what PERCENTAGE of their income do they pay ? And what is the amount they get in tax breaks ? And do they pay a "market rate" for drilling on federally owned land ?

  131. shoeless Says:

    MapleStreet Says:
-------------------------------------------------------------And do they pay a “market rate” for drilling on federally owned land ?

No. Just like lumber and mining companies, when drilling on federal land, they pay about 10% of the royalties charged by most states and private landowners. That is why they love to gobbel up federal land.

Also, they spend huge amounts of money to avoid paying even those small royalties. And, the Bush administration has done little to fight for the money owed to the American people from multi-national oil companies.

In essence, they are stealing natural resources from our federal lands, and charging us an arm and a leg to sell it back to us. That is the reason for the fight over off-shore drilling. Those areas are federally owned, and they have no intention of reimbursing the government for taking our oil.

  132. Tim Says:

While you are all busy yanking Darryl's little hoohoo, you've missed the Big Lie in the story. Mr."If I'm talkin', I'm lyin" Rove said everything will be OK because of LIHEAP funding for the poor. News today in Maine says that LIHEAP this winter will pay $400 for a family that qualifies. Last year the northern part of the state had just under 200 inches of snow, the last of which melted in late May. People are going to die this coming winter, with price-cap plans for heating oil being quoted at $4.89 per gallon. Karl and his buddies are committing slow-motion murder.

  133. SP Biloxi Says:

BillO to oil companies: "Donate 2 percent of their profits for the last four quarters to a fund that would help struggling Americans pay their heating bills."

Blowhard BillO is simply looking to pimp off of a piece of 2% of the oil campanies to pay off his sexual harrassment lawsuit. Always looking for a buck for him. And for Tubby McTreason to say that oil companies “pay a lot in taxes” is a bunch a bull when clearly the oil companies had so many expenses written off their taxes which lowered their income bracket enough that they pay less in taxes. And what Tubby is not saying is that many of them have much of their money and assets overseas. So, to say that the oil companies pay a lot of taxes in the U.S. is simply a crock.

  134. LividLib Says:

    TripleDick 7 Says:

"Your weird, persistent erection for Bill is very boring."

I see. A connoisseur of erections! That explains your name. So, what kind of erections do you find interesting then?
