In the acknowledgments of his new book, Pulitzer-Prize winner Ron Suskind writes that his research assistant was “detained by federal agents” and “interrogated” while on a trip to New York related to the book. Politco’s Mike Allen reports:
Suskind writes in the acknowledgments that his research assistant, Greg Jackson, “was sent to New York on a project for the book” in September 2007 and was “detained by federal agents in Manhattan. He was interrogated and his notes were confiscated, violations of his First and Fourth Amendment rights.” The author provides no further detail.
This is America now, and it could happen to any of us.
It makes me sick, and we need to take this country back.

August 5th, 2008 at 2:29 pmWith the information on Bush that this latest book provides, no wonder that the Bushbots would want to keep it under wraps! Shame we of this free country :cough, sputter: must have to suffer this censorship!

August 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pmDemocrat conspiracy before the presidential election
I would gladly trade one “pre-election Democratic conspiracy” for the seven and a half years of republican’t conspiracies that have degraded our country, our economy, our military and our reputation around the world.
But, of course, Suskind is not perpetrating a conspiracy. His book only adds one more strand to the fabric of deceit, incompetence, greed and arrogance that GDumbya, Darth Cheney and the Republican’ts have woven.

R E M E M B E R:
Nancy Pelosi doesn’t see evil, doesn’t gear evil, and doesn’t speak of this evil…
… and so she took impeachment off the table for political gains.
WHY NANCY, WHY…
… oh, forgot. So that your head won’t roll, too!
.
August 5th, 2008 at 2:35 pmStrange? Why would federal agents need to talk to, much less take documents from, a looney conspiracy theorist.
I thought conspiracy theorist used words to hang themselves.
August 5th, 2008 at 2:36 pmAny leaders, like Pelosi, who won’t speak up because they’ve been wiretapped by Bushco need to step up to the plate and do the right thing. The American people will stand by those who defend this nation but we won’t stand by those who defend themselves by remaining silent.
August 5th, 2008 at 2:38 pmRestraint of the Media ?
I also wonder if Suskind may be under a gag order (ie Patriot Act provision) ?
I take it that Suskind hasn’t been too kind to the WH ?
August 5th, 2008 at 2:42 pmwhere are all the musicians when it comes to speaking out against the war? msnbc praises protest music
August 5th, 2008 at 2:42 pmWhat’s the big deal? If he didn’t do anything wrong, he’d have nothing to fear.
…what’s that?
… he actually didn’t do anything wrong?
Oh.
Never mind.
August 5th, 2008 at 2:44 pmWait, the trolls have no reason to appear on this thread? ralph preemptively debunked their talking point?
Oh well, Darryl and Triplekick can have a staring contest. And maybe waterboard each other.
August 5th, 2008 at 2:48 pmTony “The Hammer” Fratto, also known as Fat Fingers Fratto, says Suskind makes a living from gutter journalism. Well, what else can one do when writing about the gutter?
August 5th, 2008 at 2:59 pmFascisti!
August 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pmSuskind is taking flak because he’s right over the target. Any other events where Al Kida may have been falsely associated with? Hmmm . . . thinking . . . here’s a hint, two airplane’s crash, three buildings fall.

August 5th, 2008 at 3:33 pmThere is only one thing missing in these revelations…..the corporate media’s willingness to follow up on Bush/Chaney subversion of the Constitution. America is waiting.
August 5th, 2008 at 3:42 pmAs I just waded into The End of America by Naomi Wolf, this chills me to the very bone. Here we have a member of the press enduring a shake down – this is the beginning of the dictatorship, people. I’m terrified.
August 5th, 2008 at 3:47 pmAnother of the 14 Points of Fascism:
6. A controlled mass media
Under some of the regimes, the mass media were under strict direct control and could be relied upon never to stray from the party line. Other regimes exercised more subtle power to ensure media orthodoxy. Methods included the control of licensing and access to resources, economic pressure, appeals to patriotism, and implied threats. The leaders of the mass media were often politically compatible with the power elite. The result was usually success in keeping the general public unaware of the regimes’ excesses.
August 5th, 2008 at 4:02 pmI used to joke to my friends that if I disappeared, they were to call the ACLU…
I’m not joking anymore. :o(

Someone on TP said it before and it is worth re-stating.
“1984 was meant to be taken as a warning, not an instruction manual”
1984 has been removed from the required reading of high school students. How convenient!

Oh, if only that were true…
You can go back Ronnie RayGun and the invasive drug testing imposed that continues to violate the privacy rights of millions (I believe in the critical jobs exception trolls so don’t start with you predictable bullsh\t!)
You can go back to Nixon and the FBI lead by J(ackoff) Edgar Hoover and the invasion of privacy then and government run character assinations.
Then there is the McCarthy era…an early sign of fascism floating up on our shores after WWII.
I could go on…
It is a long battle…please read up so you can fight on a full stomach.
August 5th, 2008 at 6:51 pmSo much for a free press.
August 5th, 2008 at 6:58 pm“We only do it to foreigners, never Americans”
Yeah right. There’s been stories of families, muslim-american families held and detained for a few months right after 9/11.
This doesn’t surprise me either, after hearing about that.
