Bolton: Regime Change In Iran ‘Would Lead To Greater Stability In The Region’»

Continuing his long-running advocacy for a war against Iran, John Bolton said on Fox News today, “Diplomacy is finished.” Bolton said there are only two options: targeted military strikes or full-scale regime change. He added:

I think regime change would be preferable because I think that would lead to greater stability in the region as a whole.

Watch it:

Justin Logan comments, “I have an eerie feeling that I’ve heard this somewhere before, but I just can’t place it…” How about just a few reminders:

President Bush, 2/26/03:

Acting against the danger will also contribute greatly to the long-term safety and stability of our world.

Vice President Cheney, 8/26/02:

Regime change in Iraq would bring about a number of benefits to the region. When the gravest of threats are eliminated, the freedom-loving peoples of the region will have a chance to promote the values that can bring lasting peace.

John McCain, 2/14/03:

[O]nly a change of regime will make Iraq a state that does not threaten us and others, and where a liberated people assume the rights and responsibilities of freedom. … Not only would deterrence condemn the Iraqi people to more unspeakable tyranny, it would condemn Saddam’s neighbors to perpetual instability.

Despite his unceasing advocacy for war, Bolton is always quick to remind his audience that he finds war detestable and “deeply unattractive.”

…”targeted military strikes or full-scale regime change”

    Is there a difference?

If there’s one thing to hang on this misadministration it’s that diplomacy is indeed finished.

Yes, yes, Mr. Bolton, but will it win an election in the fall? Good luck with that.

Also, you forgot to mention THE SURGE!!!!!

This dumb ass doesn’t seem to remember the last time the American government tried regime change in Iran. For those of you that don’t know or for you old timers that don’t remember, OPERATION AJAX was a covert plan by both MI5 and the CIA, which overthrew a democratically elected government and put the Shah of Iran back on the throne. After that, the CIA helped the Shah start SAVAK, which was his secret police force. Well, the rest as they is history. When we will learn and stop f’n with this country?

  23. tbone Says:

I don’t know what is into me today, but everything these guys say is just cracking me up. Clearly they don’t listen to themselves because they say some crazy stuff. Only Mr. Bolton and his muppet pals could possibly suggest that one more regime change in the middle east would take care of everything. Just one more. I mean that is just funny. That takes some serious confidence to get out there and make these statements given our current state of affairs and our 40 year history in the region. I mean you have to give him that. He does have some serious confidence, even if he is nuts.

  24. tbone Says:

You know, as a matter of fact, the situation on this whole darned planet is a little tenuous. I think if we just changed all the non-American regimes, then we could really see some stability.

  37. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Despite his unceasing advocacy for war, Bolton is always quick to remind his audience that he finds war detestable and “deeply unattractive.”

I’m sorry, but this is flat out false. War gives neo-cons erections. That is a fact. Neo-cons also lie about their true feelings, which is easy because they have none.

I sincerely believe that if you approached them with a guaranteed way to end all warfare on the planet, they would not only reject your idea, but they would pour their money into destroying you and your idea. Neo-cons live for war.

If Mr. Bolton (who did not earn the title “Ambassador”) really detests war so much, then why is war the only course he advocates in his many media appearances?

  38. sluggo Says:

Who listenes to this guy any more (other than FOX news)?

    1. He is partly responsible for us going into an unncessary war based on deceptions.
    2. He is closely tied to the worst President in US history.
    3. He was a complete failure at the UN and his antics resulted in our international reputation being the worst it’s been for a generation.
    4. He has been ridiculed by almost anyone teaching Internation Law, Political Science, etc

Other than filling up time and saying things that Roger Ailes wants him to say, what is his purpose in life?

  39. stateofthedivision Says:

The problem is Bolton is merely repeating what’s written daily in Israeli newspapers. This morning’s Jerusalem Post said much the same thing. The logic tree was ornamentally decorated with a shipping embargo and various IDF military drills.

From our end, the State Department noted “proceeding to open the door to a disincentive package,” otherwise known as a can of whup arse.

  40. misshusseinmolly Says:

This falls into the category of stuff that one generally ONLY hears in a Saturday Night Live skit.

Is this man insane? Didn’t all the neocons say that about Iraq? How’s that working out? And isn’t Iran already a democracy? You know, the kind of “regime” we wanted to replace Saddam’s with?

Why in the world does Bolton think we’re going to agree this is a good idea? Oh yeah — there are plenty of kool-aid drinkers out there who do, unfortunately.

  41. jonny Says:

Bolton’s “stability” = Wilford Brimley’s “diabetes TV scam.”

WHAT?? Duelling Scary Moustaches DON’T equate??

  42. krazeeinjun Says:

    Fox must’ve doctored that statement.

I believe this is what Bolton actually said:

I think regime change, after we incinerate their Persian asses in a pre-emptive nuclear attack, would be preferable because I think that would lead to greater stability in the region as a whole.

    Just saying . . .

  43. Who Misspoke Today? Says:

    Donovan » Universal Soldier

    He’s five foot-two, and he’s six feet-four,
He fights with missiles and with spears.
He’s all of thirty-one, and he’s only seventeen,
Been a soldier for a thousand years.

    He’a a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain,
A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.
And he knows he shouldn’t kill,
And he knows he always will,
Kill you for me my friend and me for you.

    And he’s fighting for Canada,
    He’s fighting for France,
    He’s fighting for the USA,
And he’s fighting for the Russians,
    And he’s fighting for Japan,
And he thinks we’ll put an end to war this way.

    And he’s fighting for Democracy,
    He’s fighting for the Reds,
He says it’s for the peace of all.
He’s the one who must decide,
Who’s to live and who’s to die,
And he never sees the writing on the wall.

    But without him,
How would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau?
Without him Caesar would have stood alone,
He’s the one who gives his body
As a weapon of the war,
And without him all this killing can’t go on.

He’s the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,
His orders come from far away no more,
They come from here and there and you and me,
    And brothers can’t you see,
This is not the way we put the end to war.

Of course that’s what they said about Iraq. Democracy was supposed to flourish in the region once Saddam Hussein was deposed in a bizzare, reverse domino theory. It didn’t work in Viet Nam, it didn’t work in Iraq and it won’t work in Iran.

Bolton illustrates the very definition of crazy, where you do the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome.

The same talking point was used to justify war crimes against Iraq, a country that posed NO IMMINENT THREAT (T.P. has dropped the ball on the 07/25/08 hearings that confirm this) to the USA when BushCo devised the 9/11 connection, the anthrax connection, the WMD connection, the “regime change” connection…

Iraq is still awaiting that stability, that democracy, that peace that these war criminals promised…

Right, because if invading two countries in the region hasn’t stabilized it, invading a third will. Right.

Is anybody keeping track anymore of all the things these blowhards have been wrong about? I lost count a long time ago.

Although it’s still somewhat entertaining to see FauxNews’ faux journalists feign outrage when they are accused of using the talking points the White House sends them. What better evidence of that than Bolton being allowed to spew his claptrap unchallenged? And since when is he a expert on the MiddleEast?

  52. jas Says:

Articles like these that expose view points of some prominent leaders in the United States make me wonder, “are they that clueless?”

First and foremost, when we talk about diplomacy, the United States went into Iran with a closed mind. They put down the demand and stated very simply “it’s this way, or no way.” I don’t know what country will respond to demands such as that, and this doesn’t seem like the best use of soft power diplomacy on behalf of the United States. During the Cold War, diplomacy on behalf of Kennedy and Kruschev was back and forth. Sure, demands were placed, yet compromise is what lead to a safe ending despite what we know now.

If you look at it, Iran is winning this diplomacy war. They are exposing the stupidity of this administration to the entire world, and that “negative” image of the United States that has become so rampant is only progressed by the United States non-benevolent demands. Lets face it, the US is the unipolar global hegemon. It’s the king of the hill. And what do others try to do to the king of the hill when its act in an unbenevolent way? They try to fend it off. Thus, this negative image that the US is recieving, it’s much more serious than merely saying “the US has a negative image now.” The implications, and ramifications of this are immense.

    our vapid troll said,

“Israel would not be in constant fear of a nuclear attack.”

Explain to me, genius, how a country that has (now admittedly) at least 50 nuclear weapons in violation of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (which they refuse to sign and Iran has signed) could possibly be afraid of a nuclear attack emanating from a country that doesn’t have a single nuclear weapon? By that logic, the United States should attack and occupy Iraq simply because…ah shit!

You’re a moron and have been flagged for being delusional!

  55. jas Says:

Another quick thing to note is during the 1990’s Dick Cheney, our current vice president was quoted saying that going into Iraq and regime change would be a quagmire, with no one running the government, not knowing what to do, it would be utter instability.

    I wonder what changed?

  65. Rick Y Says:

Sanctions against Iran should be able to stop their nuclear weapons and ICBM development. But sanctions aren’t available because of the opposition of Russia and China.

Why do these 2 countries want to push toward nuclear war? It makes no sense. Russia is an oil exporter and China an importer, so it’s probably not that.

There is no question that Iran is moving toward nuclear war, something has to stop this. We could easily have 10 Hiroshimas and it’s preventable.

In the name of humanity nuclear war must be prevented.

From here deep from within the pathological jungle of neo-fascist/socialist Red Canaduh,

“I think a Dr. Ron Paul regime change would be preferable because I think that would lead to greater stability in the American region, now in its eleventh hour just before it becomes the world’s deepest economic hole under this warmongering fraud.”

    And:

    ~President Bush, 2/26/03:
“Acting with Republican Constitutionalist Dr. Paul in freedom, trade, & open-ended justice, against the dangerous corporate fascist lobby complex of my forefathers, will also contribute greatly to the long-term safety and stability of our Constitution, & every person in our world. Then maybe Laura & I will be able to find a way to live with myself.”

    ~ Vice President Cheney, 8/26/02~:
“A Dr. Ron Paul Republican regime change in Hollywashingmywood, DC, would bring about a number of benefits to my family & the region. When the gravest of threats from me & my base are eliminated, the honest freedom-loving peoples of the region will have a chance to promote the values that can bring lasting peace & abiding happiness, productivity & prosperity. As for me, I’ll tell you this only once; suicide will never, ever, EVER, be taken off the table. DO YOU HEAR ME?”

    ~ John McCain, 2/14/03:
“All my dear American family, & all of my many, many, many great friends, who I’m so blessed & grateful for, spread all over everywhere in this great nation, as well as everywhere all around this great world, which I’ve so extensively traveled in luxury on your great-grand kid’s unlimited tab; only a Dr. Ron Paul change of regime will make America a free competition state that does not threaten us and others, and where a liberated people under a small, Constitutional government would assume the rights and responsibilities of freedom. … Not only would honest competition in the mysterious markets liberate the American people to unspeakable prosperity, it would create incentive-rich cures, & tremendous personal happiness, which, my friends, would overjoy me and perhaps even give me another worthwhile 20 years. Otherwise, I’m sunk ~ condemned to become a puppet anti-viva maleophile for the rest of my days. I beg you, all my fine friends, to give me your support in this awesome, holy, righteous dream. My friends, trust me, … trust me, … today the REAL ”Uncle Sam” needs you more than ever before.”
