Iraqi parliament adjourns without passing election law.

Iraqi lawmakers adjourned for a month today “after failing to agree on a provincial election law.” The development is “a setback to U.S. hopes for reconciliation among rival communities” as it casts “doubt on whether U.S.-backed balloting can be held in the country’s 18 provinces this year.” The deadlock was largely caused by Kurdish opposition to “a power-sharing formula” for the oil-rich city of Kirkuk:

The decision to go into summer recess came after lawmakers failed to break a deadlock over Kurdish opposition to a power-sharing formula for the northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk despite days of intense negotiations and heavy pressure from U.S. and U.N. officials.

Officials involved in preparations for the elections — which the U.S. believes are necessary for national reconciliation — have said such a delay would likely push voting to next year.

Maybe that’s the problem. Perhaps the Iraqis want us the hell out of their business and they don’t want to set up a “US backed balloting system”.

So, I how’s that surge working folks? Wasn’t this one of the benchmarks? Oh, I forgot. The moved goalpost now defines the surge as working if it lessened American troop deaths.

    But how can this be???

    The Surge™ is working!!!

Will Iraqi Republicans now stage their own idiotic “sit-in” like their American counterparts ?

Looks like we need a Resurge next year.

  5. Crusty Old Bastard says:

Well, what the hell? They are just following the lead of our Congress. They have one advantage, however, they don’t have a bunch of Repukes hanging around making fools of themselves (actually they did that long ago, they are just repeating the process) because they are afraid to go home and face the voters.

  6. raynman says:

I wonder if McSame will be advocating for another McSurge since the first one is working oh so well?

  7. larkohio says:

How much longer do we have to stay there? Forever? BTW, I heard on the news last night that the Iraqi government has a huge surplus! Why aren’t they spending some money on their own infrastructer?

The Iraqi government is running a huge surplus, which means they can’t possibly have Republicans in office.

Believe it or not, they claim that they don’t have enough expertise in spending money.

They need to come to Washington so the Republicans can teach them how to spend money on things like bridges to nowhere and phoney defense contractors who funnel appropriations to corrupt Republicans.

  10. McWars says:

McMetal got in first. Good one!

Here’s mine anyway — Will the Iraqi GOP protest purple fingers for a change to black or white paint? (No shades of gray permitted.)

Another political failure while our youth and national treasure continue to be sacrificed!

Is Darlyy surging into his hand right now?

  13. McWars says:

Will the surplus have a restorative effect on the rations for Iraqi citizens? Those took a hit, I read sometime ago.

Hard to believe, considering we’ve set such a fine example for them.

Shoeless, thanks for answering me! I am amazed!

Don’t they share the same vacation as Bush?

  17. trollsbwild says:

Any chance we could send the Repubs who are whining about offshore drilling over there? Iraq qualifies as offshore, so let them drill.

almost as if parliment took a page out of pelosi’s play book. Weird how tp criticizes parliment but supports pelosi blocking a vote on drilling, going on vacation and avoiding the democratic process on Americas #1 issue. Guess it all makes sense to tp. The whole cake and eat it thing. Nevermind the 9% congressional approval rate.
