Giuliani Resurrects Cuba-China Drilling Myth By Changing His Verbs To The Future Tense
Six weeks ago, Rudy Giuliani warned Glenn Beck that, “in essence, we have China drilling for American oil,” just off the coast of Florida. It was a line conservatives used for weeks — the ghastly specter of China drilling for oil “45 miles from the Florida keys,” “closer to the United States” than American companies — as justification for opening up new offshore areas to American drilling.
The claim, however, was proved completely and utterly false, and leading conservatives declared the myth no longer a “talking point.” Undeterred, Giuliani hid behind the future tense this morning on Fox and Friends, warning that “the Chinese are going to be able to drill off the shore of Florida” some day in the imagined future:
The Chinese are going to be able to drill off the shore of Florida, in an area where America can’t drill. We’ve prohibited ourselves from drilling. This is absurd, isn’t it? … How can you be against offshore drilling when the Chinese are going to drill off the shore of Florida? Do you think they’re going to be more environmentally sound than we would be? I mean, this makes no sense.

In June, University of Miami’s Jorge Piñon, an expert in oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, tamped down on the original rumor: “China is not drilling in Cuba’s Gulf of Mexico waters, period,” he said. Nor, he said, does it have plans to do so in the future:
China’s Sinopec oil company does have an agreement with the Cuban government, but it’s to develop onshore resources west of Havana, Pinon said. The Chinese have done some seismic testing, he said, but no drilling, and nothing offshore.
Someone should tell Giuliani that simply switching verb tenses doesn’t make a former “urban legend” suddenly true.

Come November there will be only one tense applicable to the GOP--the PAST tense. The present tense will be a gift sending them all home and there is be no future for them. Because Republicans are liars. As such, they only want to raise alarms about one of the only countries that isn't drilling in the Gulf.
This goes along with their claims that oil companies are being prevented from drilling offshore when they have gigantic offshore leases that aren't being used.
The Republicans have to lie, otherwise they have nothing to talk about.

August 7th, 2008 at 12:04 pmMissed by everyone in the GOP is that any oil drilled anywhere goes into the world market - we don't get to drill for oil and keep it here. Oil extracted from Alaska goes into the world oil market and most likely gets shipped to Japan for refinement. Nowadays, most of our imported oil comes from Canada because it's closer. Less shipping costs than moving it from the Middle East.
FNC won't talk about this much. It doesn't fit into the GOP party line. It's easier for the GOP to brandish tire air gauges than tell the truth.

Actually, the Government doesn't GIVE the mineral rights to the oil companies; they are retained by the US and are LEASED to the companies to explore and possibly produce. If it is productive, the US is paid a royalty for that production, (usually 7 to 12%).
This is just like if you, as a private citizen own mineral rights, you do the same thing.
It would only be explored and produced by our governement, if we had a national oil company.

Same w/ drilling off the US coasts. I read about a deep sea well 2 days ago that had to almost 7 miles down to reach its target. It might have been for natural gas.

I saw Laura Flanders on CNN, pretty early in the AM, maybe Tuesday. She was debating Joe somebody, and she refered to the oil companies' "stockpiling leases". The better term is "hoarding", sounds more sinister.
