Judge expected to side with Gov. Paterson on gay marriage in New York.
In June, a coalition of conservative groups and lawmakers — led by the right-wing Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) — sued New York Gov. David Paterson (D) for ordering state agencies to recognize gay marriages legally performed in other states. In a potential civil rights victory, a New York Supreme Court judge yesterday indicated that she would be siding with Paterson:
[ADF lawyer Brian] Raum argued that, if Mr. Paterson’s interpretation of New York law were to stand, “then marriage would mean nothing. It would mean whatever any foreign jurisdiction says.”
“Yes, it does mean that in New York,” Judge Billings replied. She said that there could be an exception if a certain marriage were deemed “abhorrent” but did not say gay marriages fit that definition.
Judge Billings also implied that she would rule against the Alliance Defense Fund, forcing them to appeal their case. “The petitioners, I’m sure, are headed to a higher court,” she said.

Morals and Ethics are two very different things.
Morals are your internal compass that tells you what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong.’
Ethics are a set of rules or codes the society as a whole agrees on for the good of the group.
While you may have a moral opbjection to gay marriage, most of society does not and, I would argue, should not.
Morals cannot be legislated or dictated, Ethics can.
So while you are free to follow your own moral code in this regard, you are most definetly not allowed to impose your morals on the rest of society.
For the court to rule with you and the the ADF would be despotism and in my estimation immoral, but more to the point- it would be unethical.

You give Daryll WAAAAAAAAAY too much credit. He doesn’t use Bible quotes at all. He will mention some vague things along the line of “Jesus said”, but he doesn’t cite chapter and verse on anything. And, of course, he’s usually shot down, because many of the things that Daryll claims Jesus said are not recorded in any of the gospels.
He might have a Bible sitting on his bookshelf somewhere, but it most likely has a thick layer of dust on it.

However, Matthew 19:4 merely says “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,” and the context (Matthew 19:3-12) was divorce, not heterosexual or homosexual marriage. Nobody is disputing that God made both males and females.

Methinks you’re the one adding more insight to God’s plain word here. The fact that Jesus didn’t specifically endorse gays committing themselves to each other doesn’t automatically mean condemnation. Jesus didn’t say anything about procreation in this passage at all, yet you don’t infer that Jesus is against procreation — in fact, you infer that Jesus meant only people capable of procreation should marry.

Actually, the Bible is based on rather progressive and liberal views. Jesus was quite a radical when He walked the earth — treating women as people instead of chattel, condemning wealth, illuminating the hypocrisy of the Pharisees (the right-wingers of the time), and insisting that we take care of the least among us. He even transcended bigotry with His parable about the good Samaritan.

Not only do liberal blogs (like TP, kos, C&L) have more pages (twice as many, according to the WaTimes), they tend to get many, many more comments per thread than righty blogs. This one is approaching 200 comments. A quick survey of redstate this morning showed anywhere a dozen to 38 comments, while TO had twice as many.
Liberals tend to be more open-minded about the kind of language that an organ like the WaTimes might find offensive. More earthy. Less beholden to religious uptightness.
And liberal blogs, in my experience, tend to allow more dissent than righty blogs. Dissent stirs passions and leads to conflict, especially when childish trolls post crap just to amuse themselves and earn points toward a McCain beer cozy. This results in profanity.
(Trolls are hardly innocent if this offense, by the way.)

Tongue-in-cheek aside, I do believe that liberal/progresive blogs do allow more disenting opinions than do right-whiner sites such as Red State or Little Green Footballs. Not saying that liberals/progressives don’t use profanity, as we most certainly do! I think that conservatives/regressives are more hypocritical when they delve into profanity as many claim to be ‘c’hristian while they’re cursing you out. Just my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like. . . . ;-)

I suppose it is worth pointing out that an occasional high school kid or undecided voter may happen by. I’m sure they’ll understand that “earthy” language is part of the liberal/progressive landscape.

COuld you imagine what these same people would think if they made the mistake of dropping by Red State? They’d believe that 1) ‘earthy language’ is required by the right, and that 2) that any deviation from the republi-party-line is immediate cause for being banned from their site. No disent on right-whiner sites allowed! One can only follow their approved party line!
At least at TP, those with views other than progressive/liberal are allowed and left available for people to read.
I’m amused by the number of people on the right who’ve been dropping by for a few comments, then never returning to see the responses. One can only assume this is due to Sen. McCain’s “blog for me!” program in action. No staying power.

Foul language on one site doesn’t excuse it on another.
TP does allow dissent, but liberals follow their party line just as strongly as Republicans do. Posters here are quite likely to attack their own for a dissenting opinion.

Good point. Personally, I believe that delving into profanity is usually a sign that one is losing their composure as well as their argument. My opinion only.
