A new report to be released today by the nonpartisan Institute for Science and International Security finds that an attack on Iran “could backfire by strengthening Tehran’s resolve to acquire the bomb.” “Following an attack, Iran could quickly rebuild its centrifuge program in small, easily hidden facilities,” said principal author David Albright, a former U.N. weapons inspector.

Russian troops invaded Georgia, after “Georgian troops launched a major military offensive Friday to regain control over the breakaway province of South Ossetia.” The developments raised the question of how the U.S. will react, given that Georgia is “an American ally whose pursuit of NATO membership has angered the Russians.”

“The Justice Department investigation into the firings of nine U.S. attorneys has been extended to encompass allegations that senior White House officials played a role in providing false and misleading information to Congress,” raising the possibility “that investigators will pursue criminal charges against some administration officials.”

Former New York Times reporter Judith Miller, famous for reporting on Iraq’s purported WMD in the run-up to the invasion, is “back on Iraq and back in big-circulation print. In the July Reader’s Digest, she reports how great things are in U.S.-run detention facilities.” Miller “reports that life in two detention camps housing nearly 23,000 suspected insurgents is much improved.”

On the trail today: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will visit the Iowa State Fair. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) will participate in a “Welcome To Hawaii Event” this afternoon as he begins a week-long vacation in the state.

Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr announced he would disband his militia if the U.S. agreed to timetable for withdrawal. “”It should not be considered an end to the Mehdi army,” a spokesman for al-Sadr said, about the militia’s ceasefire, “but it’s a halfway step to dissolving the Mehdi Army. If the U.S. began to implement a withdrawal timetable we shall complete the path to dissolution.”

Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt insisted the agency’s proposed rule allowing physicians to refuse to provide abortions does not include contraceptives. Leavitt said the “early draft” of the rule “contained words that lead some to conclude my intent is to deal with the subject of contraceptives, somehow defining them as abortion. Not true.”

A new liberal organization dubbed “Accountable America” will reportedly “confront donors to conservative groups, hoping to create a chilling effect that will dry up contributions.” Tom Matzzie, who heads the group, explained, “We want to stop the Swift Boating before it gets off the ground.”

“A racially charged Democratic primary campaign ended Thursday” with incumbent congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) “trouncing the opponent who ran an ad linking him to the Ku Klux Klan. Unofficial results showed Cohen with 79 percent of the vote to 19 percent for Nikki Tinker.

According to U.S. military documents, “at least 17 detainees held at Guantanamo Bay were subjected to a program that moved them repeatedly from cell to cell to cause sleep deprivation and disorientation as punishment and to soften detainees for subsequent interrogation.” The technique “was still used months after it was banned at the facility in March 2004.”

And finally: Bradley Blakeman, formerly an aide to President Bush and president of Freedom’s Watch, said that the “plot and marketing elements of the Kevin Costner and Kelsey Grammer movie ‘Swing Vote’ were stolen from him.” Blakeman claims that in 2006, he gave a copyrighted script called “Go November” to Grammar, who agreed to “develop the project and star as an incumbent Republican president but ended up portraying a similar role in ‘Swing Vote.’”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

It’s a basic law of Physics:

“For every action, there is an equal and OPPOSITE reaction.”

I thought thse people went to Harvard and Yale and were supposed to be smart. If they didn’t learn this basic law from what happened from attacking Iraq, then someone should rescind their degrees (or downgrade Harvard’s status).

He will be judging the pigs. Word is Karl Rove has a ‘leg up’ on the outcome, with most agreeing he’s the largest pig ever entered into the competition.

Themis Says: This reminds me of Neville Chamberlain’s historic theory that an early attack on Nazi Germany would have strengthened Hitler’s resolve.

I know you Cons would be content to live in the 1930’s, but this is 2008, and Neville Chamberlain isn’t any part of this new report. Also, Iran is not Germany. But, don’t let that stop you from thinking an apple is an orange. Sheesh!

Since the Cons like ancient history – Ancient Athens and Ancient Rome are two prime examples of how a Republican Democracy becomes a dictatorship, one lost freedom at a time.

One of my students was telling me about a book he read in which the author outlined the ten steps to becoming a Dictatorship from a Democracy. He said that we’re currently on step 8. I believe it.

Countries have atomic bombs as a deterrent to other countries not to attack them. No country is stupid enough to use a bomb aggressively because they know if they do, someone will do the same to them. So, if Israel or the US attacks Iran, unprovoked, then Iran will strengthen it’s resolve to build a bomb as a deterrent against future attacks.

Not going to happen with Mukasey at the helm. I truly believe that at one time Mukasey was an honorable person. But, he has sold his soul to the devil and will never again be considered honorable. I would like to ask him if it was worth it. I doubt he would answer “yes”.

Morality Police Go After Indiana Adult Store

I don’t know about you, dear reader, but I like some privacy when I visit the porn store. The idea of my friends, family, employer, and co-workers knowing about it is not particularly appealing. I guess it is understandable that I am not impressed with the group of Indiana Christians taking photographs of porn store patrons and then posting them on a public website. Their goal is to drive customers away so the store has to close. This battle has been going on for three years.

The Christians recording license plates and photographing customers want to close the store. They do not want adults to have access to the material sold at this store. Why? They believe that what the store does is morally wrong. It offends their Christian sensibilities, and they do not trust other adults to make their own decisions. They would deny their neighbors this freedom.

I love the fact that some people are visiting the store simply to annoy the Christian protesters. I would do the same if this was to happen in my community. I’d also make sure I was wearing an interesting t-shirt for their website. Protests like this can actually help the business, but I’d imagine that this is more likely in heavily populated areas.

al-Sadr’s eagerness to disband his militia is a recognition that the invading force will soon be leaving Iraq. He knows that there is no way that the Iraqi government is going to stand being occupied any longer and that Obama, as President, will be bringing our troops home.

That is a fact and you had better learn to live with it. Otherwise your head will probably explode.

You post as if GDumbya’s disastrous, dirty, avoidable little war in Iraq is a sport competition of some sort. This is not a game. The objective is no longer about winning or losing. It’s about how we can disengage most effectively in the interest of both the Iraqi people and ourselves.

Don’t expect you to understand that, pant-load. But it is at least worth a try.

  23. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

And I bet you think that the protesters at the Republicon convention won’t be confined the same way protesters at the Democratic convention will be confined.

There is a good reason why the organizers of the Democratic convention fell they have to take this step. Everyone remembers Rush Limpball’s call to protesters to go to Denver and create violence in the streets. Between that threat and the whack jobs that still think Hillary is going to be the nomination, the Democrats don’t have a lot of choice here. On the other hand, the Republicons have always been about confining protesters and controlling the message. This is evidenced by McCain’s “invitation only” town halls and having a protester who carries a sign saying “McCain = Bush” arrested for trespassing on public property.

  28. unbelievable says:

    Why McCain May Well Win

It might seem unlikely that the United States would elect John McCain to succeed George W. Bush when that would ensure continuation of many unpopular Bush policies: an ill-defined war with the Muslim world, right-wing consolidation of the U.S. Supreme Court, a drill-oriented energy strategy, tax cuts creating massive federal deficits, etc., etc.

But there are reasons – beyond understandable concerns about Barack Obama’s limited experience – that make a McCain victory possible, indeed maybe probable.

Here is one of the big ones: The U.S. news media is as bad as ever, arguably worse.

On Monday, Obama gave a detail-rich speech on how he would address the energy crisis, which is a major point of concern among Americans. From ideas for energy innovation to retrofitting the U.S. auto industry to conservation steps to limited new offshore drilling, Obama did what he is often accused of not doing, fleshing out his soaring rhetoric.

McCain responded with a harsh critique of Obama’s calls for more conservation, claiming that Obama wants to solve the energy crisis by having people inflate their tires. McCain’s campaign even passed out a tire gauge marked as Obama’s energy plan.

For his part, McCain made clear he wanted to drill for more oil wherever it could be found and to build many more nuclear power plants.

These competing plans offered a chance for the evening news to address an issue of substance that is high on the voters’ agenda. Instead, NBC News anchor Brian Williams devoted 30 seconds to the dueling energy speeches, without any details and with the witty opening line that Obama was “refining” his energy plan.

So, instead of dealing with a serious issue in a serious way, NBC News ignored the substance and went for a clever slight against Obama, hitting his political maneuvering in his softened opposition to more offshore drilling.

Williams’s quip fit with one of the press corps’ favorite campaign narratives, Obama’s flip-flopping. But the coverage ignored far more important elements of the story, such as the feasibility of Obama’s vow that “we must end the age of oil in our time” or the wisdom of McCain’s emphasis on drilling – and nuking – the nation out of its energy mess.

And, as for flip-flops, McCain’s dramatic repositioning of himself as an anti-environmentalist – after years of being one of the green movement’s favorite Republicans – represents a far more significant change than Obama’s modest waffling on offshore oil.

Chamberlain and Hitler again? Germany had an army superior to any on earth. He had already annexed Austria, assassinating its president in the process. It was by no means a given that they could be stopped. Germany was weak–but so were Britain and France.
You know what would have happened if Neville chamberlain had declared war on Germany? In themidst of the Great Depression? There would have been a socialist revolution in Britain. After deatroying a generation of young men in the most grotesque manner possible, the idea that They’re Doing It Again would have brought the government down. (The British Government knew this full well, and were scared to death of this.
Would America have come to the aid of a Bolshevik Britain as it stood against Hitler? Of course not. Britain would have fallen, and Hitler would have a one-front war against Stalin–without US materiel.
Even if Pearl Harbor happened, would that have drawn America into the Great Nazi/Soviet War? Nope. Anti-fascists would be shouted down as Reds. There’d be a Pacific war–and without the bomb, since the exiles Einstein and Fermi would be foreign agitators for intervention on Stalin’s side. And if the Nazis got the bomb? Good! They’ll use it on the Bolshies!

And there’d be far more than 6 million Jewish dead.

And then there’s McCain’s total flip on off-shore drilling. Previously he was dead set against it, now it’s the answer to our prayers. At least Obama is still against off-shore drilling. All he has done is to say that we may have to agree to some limited drilling in order to get a comprehensive energy bill passed that includes incentives for clean energy and renewable energy.

On the other hand, if the American public is smart, they will send Obama and 60 Senators to the Whitehouse. If they do that, Obama will not have to compromise and allow any off-shore drilling. The Republicons will have lost their ability to obstruct by way of a filibuster.

Not surprising. It was their strategy in 2000 and 2004, and it worked.

In swing-state Colorado, the Republican Secretary of State conducted the biggest purge of voters in history, dumping a fifth of all registrations. Guess their color.

In swing-state Florida, the state is refusing to accept about 85,000 new registrations from voter drives – overwhelming Black voters.

In swing state New Mexico, HALF of the Democrats of Mora, a dirt poor and overwhelmingly Hispanic county, found their registrations disappeared this year, courtesy of a Republican voting contractor.

In swing states Ohio and Nevada, new federal law is knocking out tens of thousands of voters who lost their homes to foreclosure.

Just ignore their pathetic attempts to garner attention, as they do not deserve our acknowledgment or response.

Eventually they will realize that none of us care what they have to say, and they will retreat back into their caves until they can find another sucker out there willing to respond to their purposely ignorant and spiteful jabs.

Well, bush has a degree from Harvard too. Guess that pulitzer has been devalued as a result of judy obtaining it just as a harvard degree is devalued by the simple fact that an illiterate texan obtained one.

People like bush and miller lie and cheat to obtain their awards. It’s just not honest.

Yes, Fred. I saw that. A black Democratic party politician who tried to play the race card against his white Democratic party opponent lost by a landslide. Now what have you learned from this?

I’ve learned that I’ll leave it to the democratic party to indentify genuine instances of race-baiting that would give a semblance of watering down the black equality movement, over the republicans calling foul on a whim.

  70. And the beat goes on says:

Russian troops invaded Georgia, after “Georgian troops launched a major military offensive Friday to regain control over the breakaway province of South Ossetia.” The developments raised the question of how the U.S. will react, given that Georgia is “an American ally whose pursuit of NATO membership has angered the Russians.”

**Wasn’t Rove in Georgia when he was supposed to be responding to the congressional subpoena? We just seem to spread joy and peace everywhere we go…

“al-Sadr’s eagerness to disband his militia is more proof of the success of the Surge”

your an idiot.. an complete and total idiot:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080808/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

“Anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has ordered most of his followers to disarm but says he will maintain an elite fighting unit to resist the Americans in Iraq…He says “weapons are to be exclusively in the hands of one group, the resistance group,” while another group called Momahidoun is to focus on social, religious and community work.”

He’s merely dividing his movement into a sociopolitical wing and a military wing. Think the IRA and Sein Fein(???). The iranian backed government of iraq was using military force to try and suppress sadr’s ability to organize a legitimate political force for octobers election. What hes doing in response is dividing his organization so that part of it will use the democratic process to gain power, while the other part will continue to use military force. If you think this means Sadr has “surrendered” by any definition of the term, you are deluded beyond reason. The guys just being shrewd. I’m not condemning or defending him, merely making an assertion of fact.

A new report to be released today by the nonpartisan Institute for Science and International Security finds that an attack on Iran “could backfire by strengthening Tehran’s resolve to acquire the bomb.”

No $hit Sherlock! Iran has every right to defend itself from aggressors.
Just like we as country have that right.

Listen, if an agitator comes over to my house, ransacks it, slaps my kids around, and punches me in the face, I guaran-fcking-tee it that it wouldn’t happen again! I’ll take whatever steps necessary for protection.

    So will Iran.

Listen very carefully, Themis(full of crap).
Iran has not attacked anyone, nor has it developed any type of nuclear weapons. Until you can get over that, you’ve got nothing. As usual!

    ___________________________________________________________

This is the kind of “duh” that really doesn’t need a formal report. Yet we still have people who are under the impression that bombing Iran will cause them to immediately surrender everything they have, fully confess their covert nuclear weapons program they’ve managed to keep hidden, and do anything we tell them to do with nary a complaint.

Those of us who are more grounded in reality can see a different picture:

    1. A violent attack tends to REALLY p!ss people off. Think of how we felt as a nation on 9/11.

    2. P!ssed off people seldom give up right away. They tend to fight back. Even a Quaker could become a snarling mass of ugliness if sufficiently provoked.

    3. If we attack a country because they are supposedly have a nuclear weapons program going on that even our own intelligence can’t find any evidence of, how will we know when we have successfully destroyed it? How will we know we have “won”? Oh, wait — that’s not important. We’ll just be there indefinitely — kind of like our other recent wars.

how much of china’s purchase of the US has been facilitated by HW… ?
