Fox News Host Refuses To Talk About Russia-Georgia War, Insists On Covering Edwards’ Affair (Updated)

Yesterday, Russia launched a major military offensive against Georgia, which Georgia has called “a state of war.” Nearly two thousand people have died and the conflict risks sparking a wider war. Also yesterday, former senator John Edwards admitted to having an extramarital affair in 2006.

Fox News has decided which story is worthy of more coverage. Today, host Gregg Jarrett interviewed PBS’s Bonnie Erbe. “We have these huge stories going on like the one you’re reporting in Georgia,” Erbe noted when asked about Edwards. Jarrett, however, completely ignored Erbe’s comment on Georgia and continued to talk about Edwards, offering praise for the National Enquirer:

JARRETT: You know, his excuse for lying is absolutely stunning. He claims he denied the affair because the reporting by the National Enquirer was “99 percent wrong.” Well, so far, they’ve been about 100 percent right.

Throughout the segment, Jarrett refused to talk about anything except for Edwards’s affair:

ERBE: The American public have told pollsters, this political season they want substance. Both these candidates have expressed support for allowing Georgia into NATO. … We could have been on the verge of nuclear war. Those are the kinds of the things that the American public wants to see discussed.

JARRETT: Right. You know, but getting back to Edwards, during the Monica Lewinsky affair, Edwards absolutely ripped into Bill Clinton.

Erbe called the Edwards story “water cooler talk,” noting again that Edwards’s affair is “not the stuff the American public wants to hear about in this election cycle.” Again, Jarrett wholly ignored her, responding with more Edwards talk:

JARRETT: Well it’s amazing, he thought could get away with it, and if he had become the Democratic nominee, my goodness.

Watch it:

Of course, this is nothing new for Fox, which has a history of covering tabloid issues more than wars.

UPDATE: In a letter, Jarrett informs ThinkProgress:

Ms. Erbe was invited as a guest on our Saturday newscast to discuss John Edwards’ admission late Friday night that he had been lying to voters during his campaign for the presidency. She was not invited to discuss the Russian-Georgian conflict. And yet, she persisted in turning every question about Mr. Edwards into a discourse on Georgia and NATO. I tried repeatedly to steer the conversation back to Mr. Edwards, but Ms. Erbe seemed determined to hijack the interview to talk about Georgia. […]

The story posted by “Think Progress” states that Fox News decided the Edwards story “is worthy of more coverage” than Georgia. That is untrue. In our 90 minute newscast, we aired two “live” reports from our war correspondent in Tblisi, another “live” report from our correspondent in Moscow, and a lengthy interview with an international relations expert, Douglas Paal, of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The Georgia story was covered thoroughly before Ms. Erbe appeared on our air.

Bush glad handed Putin in Beijing as bombs fell over Georgia’s breakaway region. It shows the lengths George W. will go to on behalf of his Freedom Initiative.

The NYT says the U.S. needs Russia’s support more on Iran, thus blunting any American efforts on behalf of Georgia:

It looks like the deal has been made. Russia gets to play in Georgia while Israel and the U.S. tamper in Iran.

    It’s Fux News, ‘nough said.

If Edwards wants to take this opportunity to bring something positive to the table for the Dems, he will talk about this even MORE, and shine a bright light by comparing and contrasting what Edwards did with what McCain did to his first wife and children when he whored around for years, and finally landed on top of a fortune (pun intended) with Cindy.

At least Edwards is now saying he is sorry… time to ask McCain about his own history of adultery and dumping a wife who was damaged goods after a car accident. McCain’s first set of kids don’t even speak to him.

If Edwards truly wants to help the poor, he can do so by pointing to McCain’s $520 shoes, his 9 houses, his private jet, and his massive credit card debt despite being a millionaire. He can also contribute the $120+k he paid for the “video services” of his gal pal into funding new commercials for Obama. After all, that was money he collected as campaign contributions from his supporters.

Make a silk purse out of this sow’s ear, Mr. Edwards.

Maybe we should be happy that “faux noise” is not covering the military/political conflict in South Ossetia/Republic of Georgia/Russia. Fauxers would probably be spouting the McWarMonger position of cheerleading for Georgia to run roughshod over the South Ossetians…

Readers should so some background reading about the long history and the tangled web of nationalities that have occupied this region of the world for thousands of years. from the website: http://www.angelfire.com/ga/georgian/history.html, The population of the Republic of Georgia is: “According to the sources of 1993 – 5 462 800 people live in Georgia. The main ethnic groups living in Georgia: Kartleli, Imereli, Megreli, Kakheli, Guruli, Achareli, Rachveli, Svani are united under one name Kartveli. Other nationalistic in Georgia:
Kartveli – 70,13% (includes: Kartleli, Imereli, Megreli, Kakheli, Guruli, Achareli, Rachveli, and Svani )
    Armenian – 8,10%
    Russia – 6,32%
    Azerbaijanian – 5,69%
    Ossetian – 3,04%
    Greek – 1,86%
    Abkhazi – 1,77%
    Ukrainians – 0,97%
    Kurts – 0,62%
    Jews – 0,27%
    Others – 1,2%”

This is a very tangled mixture of many different ethnic groups and several different religions. We should best stay out. Get the U.S. military forces out of the Republic of Georgia. Get the Georgian military forces out of Iraq. And finally, get all the U. S. military forces out of Iraq.

South Ossetia for the South Ossetians. Georgia for the Georgians. Iraq for the Iraqis…

The interesting thing is John McCain dove right back into the pool after his affair and then did it again after being enmeshed in the Keating Five Scandal. For those of you who don’t know what that is; that was part of the Savings and Loan Scandal debacle in the ’80’s which ended up costing the taxpayers billions. There are some similarities to what’s going on today’s subprime, bank failures, wall street bailouts, etc.

The only thing that concerns me is for Elizabeth and how cruel the paparazzi can be. I wouldn’t want the stress to cause her any more setbacks. If they would just have the mindset of nothing to see here move on, that would be just fine with me.

I’m disappointed because he was on Obama’s short list for VP. He can still accomplish many goals that would help so many people. One of his projects “Louisiana Home Rescue Fund” that he put in $100,000 of his own money; would be a great worthwhile project that still needs more money.

  155. LoraS says:

I’m a bit late getting back to this thread, but your remark about still being in school is uncalled for and ridiculously condescending, Tracy5. My understanding is that Zooey is back in school after marrying young, getting divorced, raising two(?) sons mostly on her own while working. What’s wrong with getting a college degree or simply trying to learn more later in life? Are you opposed to the idea of Adult Education? And, by the way, my own mother, who dropped out of high school to marry her first husband, started attending night school when I, her youngest (from her husband #2), was in 6th grade; and she graduated from junior college with honors at age 49. You want to make fun of that? Go ahead and prove just how narrow-minded you are.
Back to something closer to the subject of this thread, if you think Edwards, as an admitted adulterer shouldn’t stick his feet into politics again, how can you support McCain, another admitted adulterer? Both cheated on ailing wives. However, Edwards returned to his, while McCain dumped Carol for the much younger and much wealthier Cindy.

    August 10th, 2008 at 3:10 am

And, again, the troll exhibits hostility toward education. I’m doing this to document a pattern that the troll denies or fails to see in his own posts.

It is a well-known observation that stupid people tend to be conservative. I’ve known a lot of stupid people who resented those who were smarter than themselves. If this troll were one of the many, many stupid conservatives, it would explain his hostility toward someone seeking more knowledge. Then again, if this troll were one of the misogynist conservatives, then his hostility might be due to the fact that it is a woman who is seeking the education. Otherwise, I am unsure why he is so hostile to someone in school. He must not like learning new things.

You’re missing a major part of this. Rupert Murdoch detests the Georgian Government and is certainly delighted to see them take a pounding from the Russians. In any event, he has no interest in building sympathy for them. Why? Murdoch acquired a major Georgian broadcaster, Imedi, in a deal with a Georgian oligarch with close ties to Boris Berezovsky, the late Badri Patarkatsishvili. When Imedi became a principal mouthpiece for anti-government propaganda and Patarkatsishvili announced he would run for president against the incumbent, using the media network as his political mouthpiece, the government of Georgia stepped in and shut it down. Ever since Murdoch has been enranged at the young Georgian government–he had typically cast his lot with the mob interests that were trying to seize control in Georgia. Here’s a Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty report with the essential background:

There are current developments that are far more important but the media makes sure that we focus on some good looking guy cheating on his not so good looking wife with has cancer. Manipulation at its best!

  215. Shayne says:

Obviously the GOP (group of pigs) is scared to death of Edwards. That’s why they hounded him mercilessly on his haircuts when he was a nominee. As the vp candidate Obama would be a slam dunk so they had to get rid of him. Frankly I wish Obama would pick him anyway and then we could spend the rest of the campaign comparing Edwards’ affair to McCain’s. And the idiot trolls think Cindy is the wife should be asked the questions. Cindy is the bimbo like Rielle. Let’s demand McCain’s first wife answer questions about how her life was after his chronic philandering and abandonment.

Well, since TP didn’t cover John Edwards very personal sorry tale here, I think you are probably right. Mitt Romney with his pants down has no relevance because he, also, is a private citizen. Now we, the posters on TP, might mention it to show the hypocrisy of the MSM because if Mitt was caught with his pants down it would not receive the kind of coverage that Edwards is receiving. I really can’t see the MSM talking 24×7 about Mitt Romney cheating on his wife. Kind of like the MSM is totally ignoring the fact that John McCain had numerous affairs and finally left his crippled wife for a sugar mama.

  258. Briseadh na Faire says:

Perhaps if we returned to “traditional” marriages, this wouldn’t be a problem.

Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. Genesis 4:19

Now it came to pass after these things that it was told Abraham, saying, “Indeed Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: 21 Huz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” 23 And Bethuel begot Rebekah.[c] These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah. Genesis 22:22

But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had; Genesis 25:6

Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what should your wages be?|” 16 Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah’s eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance.
18 Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.”
19 And Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.” 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast. 23 Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. 24 And Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a maid. 25 So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?”
26 And Laban said, “It must not be done so in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn. 27 Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years.”
28 Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also. 29 And Laban gave his maid Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as a maid. 30 Then Jacob also went in to Rachel, and he also loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with Laban still another seven years. Genesis 29:15

  259. Briseadh na Faire says:

Then again, there’s plenty of other philandering in the “traditional” way.

Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance. 12 Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I[c] may live because of you.”
14 So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake. He had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.
17 But the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.” 20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had. Genesis 12

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai. 3 Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan. 4 So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. Genesis 16

And Abraham journeyed from there to the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar. 2 Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”

In other words, Abraham, the Father of the Jews, committed adultry, and twice gave his wife up to commit adultery.

    Then there’s Lot:

Then Lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave. 31 Now the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.” 33 So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
34 It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, “Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.” 35 Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. Genesis 19

So much for “family values” and “traditional marriage is between one man and one woman.”

As the EXPERT in the building industry Ted Cushman knows far more about the dynamics of the building industry that some pinheads at the Bureau of Labor Statistics who know NOTHING about the industry but rather just post numbers with no consideration to the critical factors Cushman cited. Again as someone who is in the building industry I can tell you as a fact that the commmercial building industry and as well as the healthcare building industry are booming. If you want some proof you can actually see, depending on which city you live, take a look around and you will see many tower cranes in the downtown areas of just about every major city in the U.S. especially when it comes to high rise construction.

How many times have links you been given list 1 expert with a criticism of Chimpy and/or his administration , which you subsequently dismiss ?

The collapse is far more complicated than the Ms. Wood presented. BTW she is a mechanical engineer not a structural engineer which automatically expempts her from weighing in on such a complicated structural failure event.

If you are questioning the WTC towers collapse time see below:

    August 10th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

So you, an architect, counter a report by a mechanical, rather than a structural, engineer, with a report by a chemist?!?

    From your link:

Below is a more accurate graphic using a paper written by Dr. Frank Greening which can be found at: http://www.911myths.com/WTCREPORT.pdf

I have a problem with Dr. Greening’s paper. He assumes the first seismic event was the result of the initial impact of debris from the tower hitting the ground. Videos show that the first seismic event preceeded the collapse.

Please cite to someone besides a chemist to explain the laws of physics.

Now, Tracy, it would be a bit awkward for McCain to use his first family as the centerpiece of his campaign, wouldn’t it? Even such notable conservatives as the Reagans were upset for a long time about the way he treated his first wife. And did McCain take a few years off after dumping Carol for Cindy? My understanding is that he used the Cindy Henley family connections to break into Arizona politics. (BTW, just so you don’t go off on another tangent, I am not criticizing McCain for running in his wife’s home state.)
Also, after being taken to task by various posters here, including myself, for snide remarks about going to college, suddenly in #333 you see “absolutely nothing” wrong about adult education or attending college later in life. But it was too little, too late; I’m afraid your previous remarks gave your true feelings about college away.

McCain didn’t use his family as the center piece of his campaign and he his wife also didn’t go right along knowing about the affair the entire primary. I take that back Edwards can stick his feet back into politics but he is going to need to take a few years off.

“Should the collapse of Building 7 (no jet fuel) be just like the collapse of the two towers with jet fuel?”

  290. Keith says:

    I always found this interesting:

“A company named Stratesec had an ongoing contractor to handle security at the World Trade Center “up to the day the buildings fell down” according to CEO Barry McDaniel. The company, formerly named Securacom, acquired an $8.3 million World Trade Center contract in October 1996, according to SEC filings. The company also provided security for Dulles International Airport and United Airlines between 1995 and 2001. Two of the commandeered flights on September 11th were United Airlines’, and one took off from Dulles. 1

Marvin P. Bush, brother of George W. Bush, was a principal in the company between 1993 and 2000. A private Kuwaiti-American investment firm with ties to the Bush family was one of the company’s backers.”

  291. Shayne says:
