Bush: ‘I don’t see America having problems.’

This evening, NBC interrupted its Olympics coverage of women’s gymnastics for an interview with President Bush. Last week, Bush gave a speech and expressed “deep concerns” with China’s “detention of political dissidents, human-rights advocates and religious activists.” Costas brought up this speech and asked about “America’s own problems.” Bush denied that America has any problems:

COSTAS: This past week, you restated America’s fundamental differences with China. But given China’s growing strength, and America’s own problems, realistically, how much leverage does the U.S. have here?

BUSH: First of all, I don’t see America having problems. I see America as a nation that is a world leader that has got great values.

Watch it:

Apparently, the indefinite detention of prisoners, a $490 billion deficit, and a credit crisis aren’t problems.

I wonder how much Dumbya’ll be able to see out of his jail cell window?

Between this interview and his bringing up Olympic speedskater and Darfur activist Joey Cheek, I wonder if Costas is angling for the Meet The Press job? Maybe on the theory that if Olbermann can make the transition from sports to politics, so can he?

I thought GDumbya’s last foreign trip to the G-8 et. al. was his “farewell tour”. You know — the one where he said “goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter”.

Why on earth is he taking another farewell tour in China now? Does he think he’s Cher or something?

Geez, I sure hope he doesn’t have another one of these up his sleeve. He is such an absolute and utter embarrassment to this country. We either need to (1) keep him here and gag him or (2) the next time he leaves, we need to deny him re-entry and disown him completely. That goes for his Stepford wife, LaLa, too.

No matter how great a person, country, or other organization, there are always ways to improve. Always things which shouldn’t be done.

In fact, regardless of the Good Book, this is also a basic principle of management. Maybe Bush’s not knowing this explains his business accumen.

Heh-heh, I see America all the time. All the time! From the window of Air Force One. Heh-heh. Looks good to me! Lotta brush needs clearin’, though, so maybe that IS a problem. Heh-heh. But I think the American people can overcome that problem. Heh-heh. You know, by “clearing” the “brush.” Through the clearification of the brushidity. Heh-heh. But problems like China? Heh-heh. Heck no. Every morning I wake up, look out at the Rose Garden through my bullet-proof windows, get my breakfast in bed from a servant, have a wash in Bathtub One, change outta my presidential-seal jammies and think, Hey, if this is America, I want more! Heh-heh. You know, ’cause I wasn’t officially ‘elected’ the first time. Appointification of the presidentialidity. If you catch my drift. Heh-heh.

  36. Count Istvan says:

I hate to do this but I am going to stand up for The President. I honestly believe he has never seen an American with problems ever. He has no idea that there are people in America with problems or problems in America. Look at his parents. in 1992 The President’s Father walked into a grocery store pointed at the scanner and said “Wow WTF is that thing?”

In 2005 The President’s Mother watched Katrina coverage on TV and was shocked, shocked, shocked I tell you that America still had poor people.

So Bush hasn’t seen America’s problems. I agree with him. He lives in Bush world where he is immune to America’s problems. And of course he doesn’t give a spit about America’s problems either.

  42. Count Istvan says:

One other thing. Why dose this president just have to be the story? He’s all over everywhere. Does he sleep? He just can’t let anybody else have the spotlight. Everything has to be about George W. Bush 24/7.

  43. tnrc75 says:

Really, for Repubs, the less this guy leaves the White House and gets behind a mic, the better.

  44. rktbrkr says:

The guy is completely numb, he makes Costas seem deep. He has to stay in China to downplay the seriousness of Georgia war because there is nothing he can do regardless. Maybe Dr Strangelove Cheney will start WWIII in his absence.

TeamBush set this up by having joint military exercises a few miles from the Russian border last month, the head monkey in Georgia thought he was superman after that and he’ll be flying to asylum soon, thats the best we can do for him.

Bush has worn the Army & marine Corps into the ground refereeing the Iraq civil war – which is probably a blessing in disguise because if they weren’t already worn out he’d find a wacko general to drop the 82nd and 101st abn divisions into georgia and start WWIII

  45. Robt says:

It is ashame that President Bush chose not to aspire to any of those “Great Values” he mentioned in a vague respect here.

When Bill Kristol gets on Dumbya’s case for going to China, his conservative street cred has hit the $hit list.

  59. JMOHR says:

The president and these nasty conservatives fail to understand what made the United States great. Make it simple for you, it was not denying the real problems and challenges that face any nation, large or small. It takes a little humility to admit that as a great power there are things that pose problems. However, a nation becomes and remains great by recognizing that problems must be faced and resolved.

The United States has lost that humility, especially those of a conservative bent. It is now unpatriotic to say anything other than that the United States is perfect. Criticism is banished as disloyalty. Globalization is a significant challenge to any nation on earth. Especially a nation that has been the economic powerhouse for so long. Our standard of living has been far above other nations for a long period of time. The creation of global markets enabling labor arbitrage to shift American jobs to other nations will ultimately result in the loss of living standards for the majority of our citizens as we have seen. The rise of large, multinational corporations has challenged the traditional value of being a good corporate citizen. That is why we have seen tax cuts going to fund investment overseas and not in our own country.

We can talk about the unfettered capitalism and the great disparity in income that results in corruption within the government and corporations. We can talk about the hubris that led to the war against terror that played right into the hands of this country’s enemies. But the Rand report that reviewed 658 terrorist conflicts that found that the President and his yahoo buddies followed exactly the wrong strategy will never be acknowledged or acted upon by the conservatives of this nation.

We see the standard of living slipping for all too many in our country. We see the numbers losing health care or in poverty rising all too rapidly. We see the scorn heaped upon our nation for adopting policies in dealing with its enemies that are more suited to a rogue nation rather than the leader of the free world.

The only way to turn things around in this nation is to recognize that our country has problems, serious problems. Problems that we face not because or citizens or weak or immoral; not because our country is less than others; and not because we are a lesser nation. Rather, we face these problems because we live in a time of great change and challenge. But we have to stop resting on our laurels. Yes, we are the world’s sole remaining super power. Stop the constant self congratulations and face the new challenges that await us.

  99. tom says:

So, this morning it is being reported that GDumbya is returning to the U.S. to deal with his most pressing problem — the conflict in Georgia.

What’s that all about? Are the peanut farmers going on strike? Is Jimmy Carter threatening to build a Habitat house in a commercial-zoned area?

Gee, I hope they’re not talking about the Georgia/Russia situation. What would GDumbya know about some conflict that was started by an unprovoked and unnecessary invasion of a country by some foreign power? I mean. Geez, when has he ever been involved with anything like that?

So I hear GDumbya said he expressed concern to Putin about Russia’s “disproportionate response” (and he didn’t even use a TelePrompter) in Georgia.

Hmmmm. I wonder if he even knows the meaning of the phrase. Is that maybe like a “shock and awe” air assault on a sovereign nation’s major city followed by a ground assault on its country causing hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of refugees? Is that maybe like an unnecessary and unprovoked invasion of a country less than one-tenth its size?

    Hmmmm.

I’d take a President extolling our virtues and greatness while overseas over a wannabe President traveling abroad and telling foreign nations how much we suck.
    ______________________________________________________

Except this wasn’t Bush making a speech to “foreign nations” — it was Bush in an interview with an American interviewer, on an American television network, broadcast to an American audience. The fact that it occurred on Chinese soil was just a technicality.

Oh, and the American audience? We know there are problems here, and Bush just looks like a fool. Costas asked an intelligent question — one that deserved an intelligent answer.

  105. DallasNE says:

What moves people to be this sour about something so basically nice?

How better could he have handled that situation? You’re really just demonstrating that you’d slam him for anything.

Why not mention his visit to the women’s softball team?
“It’s good for the world to have girls playing softball,” Mr. Bush said, his back marked by a chalk handprint, a prank of the centerfielder, Laura Berg, “and these women are going to show girls how to win.”
There’s no reason to portray him as disrespecting women.….

Yeah, Ann. I agree. And there’s no reason to depict him the way he’s being depicted here, as am ambassador abroad in total denial there are any problems whatsoever back in the U.S. That’s not his role, and there are others all too willing to do that job already (Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, The Dixie Chicks, etc.)

Shame on you guys. This is the Olympics. Show some pride in your country for once… it’s just two weeks out of every four years.

As for Edwards’ affair… are you saying then, that anyone who votes for McCain should also be embarrassed, since his extramarital infidelities during his first marriage are well documented? You know, when he came back to a wife that had faithfully waited for him and cared for their children during his captivity, only to find that a tragic accident had left her crippled and overweight and not the model trophy wife he had left behind? *In the 1950’s our CIA doing the bidding for British Petroleum (BP) infiltrated Iran, bribed some of the Iranian press to spread propaganda against Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister, hiring one group of street thugs Iranian thugs to cause chaos in the streets and holding up signs supporting communism and the PM, while hiring another group of Iranian thugs to start fights with the first group of thugs to make it appear that the PM of Iran had lost control of his country…why? Because the Iranian PM wanted to nationalize his countries oil which BP didn’t want. Of course the PM was overthrown, the U.S. government replaced him with the Shah who was a dictator.

*The Gulf Of Tonkin Incident: A confirmed false flag attack used to escalate the war in Vietnam.

*The coverup of the attack of the USS Liberty: The USS Liberty was attacked by OUR friends, Israel in an attempt to get us to help them with their war with Egypt, attacked and sunk the USS Liberty and our government (John McCain) continues to coverup the truth of this attack.

    *Racial issues

    *Katrina

Yup I could go on but I’m sure that brainwashed, phony patriots like Dennis would continue to support our government even if they shot his mom in front of his eyes.

Hmmmm if the Bush administration lied to us about Iraq and their links to WMD’s, anthrax, yellow cake, Al Qaida, mushroom clouds, the Iraq oil would pay for the war, the length of the war, is it possible that the Bushites also lied about 9/11 also??

And McCain would have been booted out of the Naval Academy if his daddy and grandfather hadn’t been admirals. And even with those connections graduated 3rd from the bottom of his class. And no doubt after he crashed the first 2 or 3 planes he’d have been dishonorably discharged without his family connections don’t you think. In her book, Bushwhacked, the late, great Molly Ivins talked about some of Bush’s “accomplishments” as governor of Texas.

Dubya’s accomplishments as governor of Texas:

“As full-time residents of the state that gave you tort reform, H. Ross Perot, and pen!s-enlargement options on executive health plans, we’re obliged to warn you that if Dubya Bush really does export ‘the Texas Miracle,’ the country will be in deep sh!t.”

    Dubya’s environmental record:

“Bush has a chemical-dependency problem, but it’s not cocaine. It’s Monsanto, Dow, and Union Carbide. They wrote the checks that put him in the Texas governor’s mansion….Bush had two voluntary emissions-control programs here in Texas. One involved polluting industries. The other was directed at adolescent males, who were encouraged to ‘try abstinence.’ Only 3 of our 8,645 most obnoxiously polluting refineries actually volunteered to cut back on their toxic emissions. Numbers on teenage boys are not yet in.”

Really little guy, you probably aren’t that bad. You probably could make something of yourself if you could realize that you don’t need to always show your subservience. You’re lack of esteem is a handle that the GOP grabs hold of whenever they need the support but they just want your vote.

No, just an objective point once in a while. If anyone ever attempts to say something like they’ve considered and respected the other side’s view, they always have to preface with an apology, or a ‘don’t shoot me for saying this, but…’ or ‘I don’t usually agree with xxxx, but in this one case he does have a point’. And you know why they’re in the minority here, or don’t want to speak out against the groupthink? It’s because of the vitriolic gatekeepers like MCMetal and Dr. Matt and shoeless and Uncle Ho that keep it to a very scant minimum. It’s their ‘contribution to the cause’.

    Culture Warrior responds:
You said it was obvious that he had never read one of O’Reilly’s books when I asked. Why is it that, based on your assumed fact, I am wrong when I assume he hasn’t seen the Factor? You assume he hasn’t read his books, but you say it’s “obivous” he hasn’t, which implies that you know. I’m not pimping for O’Reilly, and I certainly did NOT expect to be welcomed, much less warmly. Who says I want to emulate O’Reilly? I firmly believe what he says on The Factor and in his books. Bringing up his personal life is designed to do one thing, much like these websites: character smear. That does not help anyone. His personal life is his. He’s still a good guy. I’ve got a pretty good idea that EugeneDebs has not seen the Factor nor read any of O’Reilly’s books. I imagine he/she stays in a tight liberal circle and bases his/her opinions about O’Reilly based on what his/her liberal friends say. Think for yourself. Also, I find it hard to listen to the argument of a person whose username is that of a socialist. One other question, cazzie russell: Have YOU ever ready any of O’Reilly’s books or seen The Factor?

  202. darladooner says:

he’s a dry drunk, what do you expect?

  203. cazzie russell says:

Yes, Culture Warrior, I’ve seen The Factor, and I think your hero is a boorish nincompoop, which is why I don’t waste any more of my time on him. You’re not pimping for him? You must not recall remembering, so let me help you out. In a thread about the state of the nation, and its leader’s refusing to acknowledge the hard times engendered during his reign, you came forth with this useless non-sequitur: “Y’all should read O’Reilly’s Culture Warrior.” That’s the problem with the written word. Once you’re on record, you can’t make it go away. Accountability is a drag, isn’t it? But if you want to parse it now to indicate that you didn’t technically “pimp” for him — as in, act as a liaison for a romantic encounter — but rather merely “shilled” for him — as in, “buy his book!” — have at it. I’m sure it will be a fascinating retort. As far as your point about “his personal life is his,” I couldn’t agree more. His problem was that he’s a public figure, and thus not afforded the same sort of privacy as the everyday shlub. And as everyone knows, any sexual dalliance outside a marriage-bed, missionary-position run-through is a far worse transgression than homicide. One will get you impeached, the other will not. Which certainly demonstrates that there’s nothing askew in our country today, is there?

I have no problem with accountability. It’s a very important aspect of our society. Seeing that you were not totally truthful in calling me a pimp for O’Reilly, you tried to cover it up with the “well, it’s not technically…” argument, which is to say that I wasn’t pimping at all. If I “shilled” for him, then say that, and I’ll be happy to disprove that assertion as well. I never demanded that everyone buy his book. I never even said anything about purchasing it. If you know you’re wrong about calling me a pimp for him, then admit it instead of looking for the “well, technically I guess it wasn’t’ argument. I WASN’T. Just admit it. Now that we’ve addressed that, does anyone remember the actual issue we were discussing before some of y’all started focusing on insulting and attacking me. Which is more important?

Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicted by repeated physical fights or assaults, Reckless disregard for safety of self or others, Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations, Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent about having hurt, mistreated or stolen from another.”

“A person with antisocial personality disorder. Probably the most widely recognized personality disorder. A sociopath is often well liked because of their charm and high charisma, but they do not usually care about other people. They think mainly of themselves and often blame others for the things that they do. They have a complete disregard for rules and lie constantly. They seldom feel guilt or learn from punishments. Though some sociopaths have become murders, most reveal their sociopathy through less deadly and sensational means. Charles Manson Ted Bundy

“(On Scott Peterson) ‘Sociopaths are very egocentric individuals that lack a sense of personal responsibility and morality. They may be impulsive, manipulative, reckless, quarrelsome, and consistent liars. Sociopaths are usually unable to sustain relationships and have a total lack of remorse for their actions AND may also be very prone to aggressive, hostile, and sometimes violent behavior. This aggression may or may not lead to criminal behavior and often takes the form of domestic violence. Along with these other actions, sociopaths often engage in self-destructive behavior such as alcoholism or addiction to drugs. This, of course, usually worsens many aspects of the sociopathic behavior. Despite these previous symptoms, the sociopath may be an excellent actor, always appearing charming, calm, and collected. They usually have a normal or above normal intelligence level and good verbal fluency. It is these qualities that sometimes place he sociopath in leadership positions within their social groups and often make it hard to spot their “black side”.
