The San Francisco Chronicle reports that record numbers of college students “are lining up for financial aid – and asking for more of it – as the nation’s economic woes hit campuses across the country.” Across the country, “8.9 million students filed federal student aid forms during the first half of 2008, a 16.3 percent increase over the same period last year.” In California alone, 999,594 students requested federal financial aid during the first half of 2008, up 20 percent from last year.
Another “victory” for the Bush Rethugs, because federal loans will only cover a small amount of tuition so these students will be saddled with private student loans where the interest rate can be raised as high as the bank cares to raise it and cannot be cleared even in bankruptcy.
Or they will be forced to join the military (for the GI Bill educational payments, the ones Bush and McCain fought to limit) for the dear leader’s glorious war new with Iran or now Russia????
August 11th, 2008 at 9:17 pmDon’t worry kids, if you can’t get afford college you can always hang out in your underwear (cough) in Mom’s basement, eating Cheetos and orange-ing up your keyboard.
August 11th, 2008 at 9:18 pmSome young conservative chickenhawks with shrinking options will join those ‘losers’ in the Armed Forces. Think war is unpopular now. You ain’t seen nothing yet.
August 11th, 2008 at 9:19 pmI am sorry I am a statistic.
August 11th, 2008 at 9:26 pmActually most of them are Republican office holders anticipating a loss of job. Unfortunately, the retraining will be insufficient to overcome the innate stupidity associated with registration in the Republican Party.
August 11th, 2008 at 9:34 pmanyone notice those from the gene pool of the wealthy are the ones most likely to afford college? Afford college that is, without a mortgage like student loan to pay off.
Just one more way the upper class can keep what they feel is theirs and at the same time shrink the middle class.
August 11th, 2008 at 9:37 pmA mom of a, maybe genius, son called in to one of the progressive radio shows… her son that graduated from high school at age 14, then completed 2 years at a community college by age 16 could not afford to go onto a four year college in the US… so instead, she sent him to a Canadian University for a degree.
And we wonder why our country is falling behind? We are not educating our best and brightest.

Too bad there won’t be any jobs for them once they’ve finished.

August 11th, 2008 at 10:31 pmkevkev,
If you believe anything they tell you, you are truly disabled–in the head. Just tell them to do a Cheney. They cannot do anything except screw with your credit report without taking you to court. If they file, just file a counter-suit. If they don’t show you win. If they do show they may get a judgement but not an attachment so it will just go on your credit report. If you are disabled you can’t get credit anyway so what have you lost? Relax and turn them in to the “Do Not Call” people and collect your $500.
August 11th, 2008 at 10:42 pm#8 kevkev,
This is not the place or time for your personal financial problems. While you might think your post is on topic because of the “college aid” issue, it is not.
You are apparently defaulting on a student loan (not student aid) without a good reason why. Hence the collection agency.
When you were disabled a few years ago and had you proceeded in good faith with a restructuring or with new terms this would not have happened. It appears you’ve just ignored the problem until the last minute.
ALMOST EVERY EFFORT TO PAY SOMETHING TO THE DEBTOR IN THE COLLECTION INDUSTRY IS MET WITH HAPPINIESS.
It appears from your circumstances that you didn’t try to make anybody happy with information or money.
Sorry. Good luck.

You are right to be suspicious of any collection outfit. You don’t say what state you are in, before the changes in the bankruptcy laws, it made a difference.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:17 pmA quick check of this DCS outfit brought up a couple of results from “Ripoff Report” claiming that they go for old debts and defunct accounts. They also operate as NCO Financial Systems. I have been contacted by NCO trying to collect on a defunct Montgomery Wards account we paid off in the mid 1990s. I ignored them and nothing else happened. They are trying to get you to agree you owe them something. If you ever pay them anything it is like an admission of the debt that they will use against you. Never tell these people anything, they will keep calling and comparing the story from one call to the next, looking for an angle.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune, I hope things work out better for you after Obama is President. Maybe we can get the credit laws back to where they protect the consumer, like they used to be. When individuals could actually declare bankruptcy, the collectors couldn’t push so hard.

My son, a college student, was also turned into collections for some sort of forgotten debt. The debt was paid, but the collection bills and threats from so called lawyers kept coming… even 2 years later for this paid off debt. Funny how their claim never made his credit report where he could sue for damages.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:33 pmWho cares about college students? Twacy the Twoll already explained last night that college students were a drain on society. Fuggem.

You sound like one of those neonut lawyers from Regent working for the collection agencies.
Do away with the self-serving tough talk. Your post is insensitive, and therefore, flagged.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:11 amPerfect way to wage class warfare- make the cost of higher education way too expensive to afford or bury young adults with overwhelming debt to get that degree.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:36 amYou bet, trollsbwild. They don’t look at this period as “hard times.” They’re getting exactly what they want.
FACT: Democracy cannot survive at this rate. When the American dream is reserved for children already living the upper quartile of the American dream, the disadvantaged will huddle into the masses and we will collapse. Lady justice will collapse. America, god help her, is already showing deterioration. I’m constantly afraid that she will fall.
Crime will increase, and wealthy will not be immune. The rich seem to think that the impoverished will no their place no matter how much pressure is applied.
A revolution is an increased possibility. So much going to so few will not sit well with the disadvantaged masses.

August 12th, 2008 at 8:35 pmI don’t know why college students in America are getting loans today.
I have a plan… CHAANNGE IS COMMING!! My plan is to tax the living heck out of every corporation and wage earner that makes over 42,000 per year. Were gonna start with those evil oil companies. Then we will attack the financial companies. Then were going after the food and drug companies. Then, after we have cleaned them out of money, were comming after those “rich” wage earners that make over $42,000 per year.
CHANGE IS COMMING!!! I’m going to bribe you… er’ give each and every American free health care, free education, free food, free gas, free shoes and $1000 dollars. It doesn’t matter if your a legal citizen or not. Under my plan, everyone is gonna get something.
Put your HOPE in me and the government. Change! Change! Change! come-on people, chant with me, CHANGE, CHANGE CHANGE!
No one on American should need to work. The government will take care of you cradle to grave. Vote for me. Vote for change.
