Pressure builds on Boehner to apologize for his violent remarks about Pelosi.

Last week, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) lashed out at Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for her refusal to call Congress back into session and succumb to the GOP’s political stunts on oil drilling. “The American people are gonna hang her,” Boehner told reporters. Rep. George Miller (D-CA) quickly called his comments “offensive, inappropriate and deliberately misleading,” Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) said they were “unfortunate,” and Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) called on Boehner to apologize. Today, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) joined in:

boehner2.jpg I was disappointed to hear of Minority Leader Boehner’s inappropriate comments regarding Speaker Pelosi. Republicans are clearly frustrated that the American public is not buying their Johnny-one-note energy policies of the past, but such comments are harmful to a useful debate over our nation’s future. I hope the Minority Leader will apologize for his remarks, and work with Democrats in a bipartisan, constructive manner to increase our domestic oil supply, invest in renewable energy and end our dependence on foreign oil.

Boehner is refusing to back down from his violent rhetoric though, today posting a blog post titled, “Marie Antoinette, the Book Tour.”

  4. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Where was all of this offshore oil drilling concern when the republicans held the majority in both houses? This is nothing but a political stunt before elections. Nothing more then a fabricated crisis created by the oil companies and used by their political buddies in a weak attempt to sway public opinion before the elections. Seriously what else can the republicans talk about? The economy? The wars? Rising inflation? Rising unemployment? Record debt?

Nah…instead they talk about offshore oil drilling and lie about how it would have an immediate impact on gas prices in our country knowing that their braindead supporters believe every lie that they spew from their mouths!

  5. A Patriot Acting says:

    “Pressure builds on Boehner…”

Maybe the minority leader should take it to the Men’s Room at the House. I’m sure one of his Republican brethren can help him alleviate all that pressure. They can turn off the lights for another “caucus” in the dark.

Fascinating that Boehner is referring to Nancy Pelosi as “Marie Antoinette” when his own idol is telling Bob Costas that America doesn’t have any problems.

And I see that Boehner is still hyping the amount of “publicity” the GOP’s stunts are getting. I saw some publicity when Congress first adjourned, but I haven’t seen any in awhile. Is this just wishful thinking on Boehner’s part?

Uncle Fester Lurks Says: Nah…instead they talk about offshore oil drilling and lie about how it would have an immediate impact on gas prices in our country knowing that their braindead supporters believe every lie that they spew from their mouths!

No amount of drilling is going to make a country with 3% of the world’s oil but 25% of the world’s oil usage independent.

Even if we lined our coasts and country with oil rigs, we’d still have to import 21% of our oil.

And now they want coal and nuclear energy? NO!

We need clean, green and renewable energy only. Until the Cons start pushing for that, I can’t hear a thing they are saying…

  16. Dr. Grumpus says:

Eh, do as the Republicans do.

“The American people are going to kick his bony a$$, and then beat his wife just for the fun of it.” (Hey, if McCain can joke about it, why not everyone else…)

Eh. Doesn’t have the same ring to it: I should have been more misogynistic and use the other word instead of “beat.” And you see, that’s our problem. Republicans have no qualms whatsoever in using violent, vile language to guide their ilk in what they should do, as well as guiding their own actions and thinking.

I wish the Democrats would wake up and realize that this current incarnation of the Republican party needs to be shot, put into a coffin, seal that coffin so it cannot be openned ever again, and then buried so deep in the ground that it will not be discovered for millenia. And they should do everything — even using Republican tactics — to accomplish that.

We’ll deal with the moral implications later, since it seems that Democrats are more capable of realizing they have crossed the line, whereas the amoral Republicans are not.

There is one true statement in the quoted passage from the bunster:

The San Fran Liberal does not represent the rest of the country

This is absolutely true. The nature of the House of Representatives is that each Congressional district elects its own representative, and these representatives collectively form the House of Representatives. These member vote, according to party, on those they support for leadership positions.

Now the question is, did HunnyBunny know this bit of civics and just get lost in a smoky haze of partisan hatred in the rest of her screed, or did she just get lucky?

I believe if you take inventory, you will find there are really very few posters here who actually go so far as to call for lethal violence toward others. But let’s look at them, to examine your point.

Some of the posts here are vulgar. Some are offensive. Some are even downright hateful. But — ILLEGAL? Would you please cite the law that dictates what people may or may not post on blogsites, and examples of posts that violate that law? And when I say LAW, I’m talking about actual legal statutes, not just TP’s TOS.

Now, having said that, the posters here are merely posting here. They are not holding press conferences (like Boehner), they are not running ads full of lies (like McCain), and they are not waving machine guns around onstage during a concert spewing hateful things they would like to do with said gun to certain presidential candidates (like Ted Nugent).

I suggest you clear the mote out of your own eye before worrying about the speck in another’s.

People don’t support WAR CRIMES! Ordinary people prefer the respect for the Rule of Law, which they must abide. So when they see a criminal administration pardoning themselves, excusing them selves for future prossecution for War Crimes, pardoning Telecomunications companies that infringed on their rights of privacy, When they see an administration hiding their seedy dealings behind close doors and hiding themselves behind ‘classifying information’ excuse, when they see this criminals not unsering questions about 9/11 under oath and with transparancy, when they don’t see the footage of a 757 hiting the Pentagon, when they know the great bulk of the hard earned taxes going to the military complex instead to social enterprise, when they see their jobs going together with the economy, when they have to pay more money for petrol, They get fed up! They are also fed up with a weak bunch of wimps, elected by the people to make significant change, selling them short by taking the IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS of these WAR CRIMINALS. They had enough! The term “Hang” can be applyed to Pelosi as well as to those who also fail the people, who fail the Constitution, who fail the USA.

If Pelosi gets her way, the GOP will have their bluff called when Congress comes back from their summer break. And the right wing chatter will make some other nonsense up for the MSM to chase after.

Sorry cupcake, 65% is not a “vast” majority and that majority was not agreeing to “only drilling”. The question that was asked is do you think we should drill off-shore as part of a comprehensive package of energy proposals.

I’m quite sure if a poll was taken where they asked “Do you think that drilling for oil will solve our energy crisis and lower the price of oil”, the same 65% would say “hell no”.

I don’t think their little theatrics are going to accomplish anything other than to show what a bunch of fools they are. People in this country are smart enough to realize that we need to find a way to cut our dependence on a finite resource, Oil, and to find a way to get our energy from renewable resources.

Truth be told, I’ll probably vote for the man because I too want change (yes you can write this down as the day a conservative finally agreed with a liberal). Drill now is what the vast majority of Americans want and will show in the November elections. This so called “game” the republicans are playing is very effective.
    ________________________________________________________

Effective for now. It won’t take that many advertising dollars to educate Americans of the following:

    1. Drilling now will NOT lower gasoline prices now. Granting the leases the oil companies want result in any petroleum coming out of the ground right away, even if they marshalled all their resources to that objective.

    2. The oil companies already have millions of acres of land they hold leases on. If it’s so all-fired urgent to drill, don’t you think they would be drilling on this land? If there isn’t any oil on this land, then why are they hanging onto the leases? PROFIT. The oil companies will only drill when and where they will get the most profit from doing so. They really don’t care about increasing the petroleum supply, and they certainly don’t care about lowering the cost of gasoline. There’s no money in that for them.

    3. Just because the oil companies acquire leases for offshore or ANWR drilling doesn’t mean they are going to drill. See explanation in point #2. They primarily want these lands to keep others from getting them. It’s just a land grab, and they using sky-high gas prices to sucker the public into supporting it.

    4. Because oil is a global commodity, there’s no guarantee that any oil drilled out of these new lease areas will be used to give any relief at the pump. This oil will go to whomever can and will pay the most for it, which means it’s just as likely to go to China as to come here. Now, if they drill A WHOLE LOT out of these areas, it’s possible to increase the world supply enough to lower prices worldwide. However, if that happens, look for OPEC to put the brakes on to maintain the status quo.

Right now, the American public is buying the idea that more oil will mean lower prices, and the way to get more oil is to do more drilling. And if it really worked that way, I’d be in favor of it, too. Once Americans realize that giving the oil companies the sun, moon, and the stars will not make their fill-ups cheaper, expect support for the “drill here, drill now” concept to drop. A majority of Americans may be ignorant now, but that can and will change.

    ___________________________________________________________

Nope — Pakistan already has nukes, so I doubt a search for yellowcake would raise too many eyebrows.

You should know, however, there is a BIG difference between invading a nation with the objective of changing the regime there and making specific targeted attacks on terrorist camps. Obama has never said he would invade Pakistan in the way that we have done in Iraq. Obama has indicated that he wants to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice for 9/11 and other Al Qaeda attacks, and IF reliable intelligence indicates that OBL is inside Pakistan in a known location, and IF Pakistan refuses to cooperate in his capture, THEN we will do whatever is necessary to capture OBL with or without Pakistani cooperation. This is reasonable action, not “pre-emptive invading”, and I believe most Americans wouldn’t have a problem with this — except for a few wingnuts who would be all sour grapes over the fact that Obama got OBL and not Dubya.

Now, as far as you sitting idly by if Democrats were to “pre-emptively” invade another country? I would suspect that once you’re no longer dulled by the kool-aid, you would see how wrong this is and you’d protest it. And we’d be right alongside you. After all, we believe wrongdoing is wrongdoing, no matter who does it.

There is no “own words” definition of torture. There is only one definition of torture. There is no grey area.

According to the UN Convention Against Torture:

the term “torture” means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions.

You’re attempting to chastise those of us here for disliking McDepends , based upon political party affiliation and policies ; because your overwhelming fawning over him isn’t determined by the same thing you’re accusing us of ?

    You’re pathetic………….

I would have believed you didn’t care about my opinion if you would have left it at…

As I’ve already stated here : Who gives a shit what your opinion is ?

By you choosing to comment further proves you do care about my opinion. Otherwise, why comment after the statement? And I’m pathetic?

Did I chastise you MC? I brought up Mc Cains service and challenged your opinion that he had a “horrible” record. I am proud of all of our soldiers past and present. There are a few who don’t deserve it. Abu Ghrab for example, but any soldier who fights and serves with honor is good in my book. And you are trying to discredit his service because of your political leanings. Otherwise, you wouldn’t attack him as vicious as you do. Your scared, and it shows. There, I will chastise you now, deservingly for someone who served!

    August 11th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

    ——————————————————————————–

I attack him so “viciously” , because partisan pieces of shit like yourself attempt to deify another clueless , below-average individual , due to partisanship and your OWN FEARS OF THE UNKNOWN IN THE FORM OF A BLACK MAN.

Oh , and because that moron deserves it.

    BTW

Why and how are those particular individuals at Abu Ghraib solely to blame ?

They were FOLLOWING ORDERS LIKE GOOD SOLDIERS ; orders that came from your retarded simian deity and his Shotgun happy piece of shit buddy……….

    Waterboarding

There is NO circumstance that would make you consider using waterboarding. It’s 100% off the table and not one circumstance would allow you to use it, ever?

    Not a chance in hell

Nope. None. There is absolutely no reason to use torture on another human being under any circumstances.

    To what end?

    Does it produce dependable intelligence?

If so, how do you account for McCain’s revealing the names of the Green Bay Packers (or Pittsburgh Steelers, depending on which city he’s campaigning in) to his North Vietnamee captors?

If not, then why use it at all?

Also Misshusseinmolly, that then begs the question, was OBL actually responsible for 9/11 or was it an inside job perpetrated by members of the Bush administration. Ever see Zeitgeist or Loose Change? How do we know we’re even going after the right guy?
    ____________________________________________________

Let’s just say there’s enough evidence to justify an arrest warrant. He’s still entitled to a trial. However, it may not come to that — he has vowed not to be taken alive, and he allegedly has ordered his men to shoot and kill him if that appears inevitable.

Even if Osama bin Laden genuinely had nothing to do with 9/11, he is still culpable in other attacks attributed to Al Qaeda.

But I’m amused that you’re concerned about whether or not we’re going after the right guy. Since when have you right-wingers been concerned about erring on the side of caution? Does this mean you think we should release all detainees from Gitmo unless we are absolutely, positively sure they are “the right guys”?

As far as 9/11 being an inside job, I admit there are plenty of details that make me go “hmmm…”, and it was a Godsend for Bushco and their agenda. But while that can raise eyebrows, it doesn’t indict anyone.

It figures you’d think Showgirls was a terrific movie. It has won a LOT of awards.

Pretty much all Razzies, but still a hell of an achievement.

  194. hussein toasterhead says:

    Bunny2 Says:

How do you define torture toasterhead? In your own words. If you can define what consevatism is in your own words, torture shouldn’t be that hard. Listening to bad music for hours and days? Is that torture? Is doing nothing to an alleged enemy the safest way to go about gathering inteligence? Letiing all of them go when they don’t talk? “Your free to go. You gave us zero information about who you are and what you may or may not know. Have a great day sir.”.
    August 11th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

I don’t define torture in my own words. International law is an adequate definition for me. But if you must have some concrete examples, here’s Amnesty International’s take:

Torture can be physical and include various techniques including: beating, whipping, burning, rape, suspension upside down, submersion into water almost to the point of suffocation, and electric torture with shocks of high voltage on various parts of the body, very often on the genitals.

And it can be psychological, including threats, deceit, humiliation, insults, sleep deprivation, blindfolding, isolation, mock executions, witnessing torture of others (including one’s own family), being forced to torture or kill others, and the withholding of medication or personal items.

“Listening to bad music for hours and days,” if it causes sleep deprivation, is torture. Psychological torture can be just as bad as physical torture. And there are no circumstances in which it is justified. Ever. No ticking time bombs or hostages – nothing.

Torture only produces bad intelligence. Its purpose is not to interrogate, but to break a prisoner’s humanity into a state of conditioned helplessness. A human in this state will say whatever they have to to stop the torture – they won’t give you accurate or actionable intelligence. They’re more likely to give you false leads that will make it even more difficult to find that ticking time bomb.

The best way to get information from an al-Qa’ida prisoner is to treat them well. I know it sounds “soft on terror,” but it works. When you treat these detainees with a bit of dignity, even stroke their egos a bit, they get comfortable and let information slip. That’s how we got a lot of good information from Shaikh al-Libi and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed (before we started torturing them).

    Miss..Molly,
You need to realize that posting death threats against the President of the United States remains a federal offense, even if TP’s angry ilk are “just kidding”. There have been MANY death threats against Bush and Cheney on TP, all of which are ILLEGAL. I specifically recall posts by JMOHR and gummich for example, both of which are daily contributors. Face it, TP.org is a hate site by haters, for haters, 100% NEGATIVITY all day, every day. I’ve alerted the Secret Service and forwarded them posts since cowardly TP admins can’t seem to police their own trash can.

    August 11th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Well if triplekick11 doesn’t pay attention to Ann Coulter, like most of the country, then I’m sure he never heard her say that. Unfortunately for you, he can paruse this website and find death threat after death threat… the reason the secret service doesn’t investigate is because they’re posted by elementary school kids who’s mommies obviously don’t monitor their internet time… while they poke fun at real men who have enlisted in military service when all they’ve ever done is finish the first level of “call of duty 17″ on their x-box 360. They usually come up with really groovy monnikers like Mcmetal(lica) or DieNowForPeace(andHairgrease).
