Dorgan: Withdraw Iraq reconstruction money, invest in renewable energy.

In light of a recent GAO report revealing that the Iraqi government may have a $79 billion budget surplus by the end of the year, “Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) said today that he wants $10 billion of U.S. funds that have been so far unpsent on Iraqi reconstruction rescinded,” the Politico reports. Dorgan has proposed using the funds to invest in renewable energy production:

Dorgan said he plans to introduce the Iraq Self-Sufficiency and American Energy Independence Act when Congress returns. The bill would transfer the unspent reconstruction funds to the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in the Department of Energy.

“Today, Americans are paying sky high prices for oil and gas, and at the same time the Bush Administration is continuing to spend billions of dollars a year for Iraq reconstruction even though that country has huge budget surpluses. That is a bankrupt strategy,” said Dorgan.

    Sounds like a better plan.

THAT'S SUCH A GOOD PLAN.....THERE'S NO WAY IT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED.....

IT MAKES WAAAAAAY TOO MUCH SENSE.

  3. Blame Canada Says:

And the Republicans say BOO!!! And the Democrats cave. This will never happen. Pelosi is already saying she is open to offshore drilling. The cowards are still cowards.

  4. Alejandro Says:

Dorgan is one of the few human beings in the Senate.

  5. ArtZ Says:

Let's bring it to a vote.
Maybe they can merge it in with the GOP energy bill.
    What fun!

I agree Alejandro! He also knows what the hell he is talking about when it comes to budget spending, offshore tax shelters (Cayman Island) and the dangers of the loss of jobs in America.

Yup...she caves in to the corrupt republicans but won't cave in to Dennis Kucinich and his atricles of impeachment. Makes ya wonder what the Bushites have on Pelosi and some of the other spineless democrats?

  9. SP Biloxi Says:

Great plan by Sen. Byron Dorgan. Finally someone that is thinking about the American people.

  11. pete Says:

What happened to the Bill0 thread? What happened to all the posts about the certifiable lunatic from the 6th Congressional district?

My guess is that the site got hacked or sued. Will we ever know?

  12. Crusty Old Bastard Says:

I guess the asylum has been taken over by the inmates. TP now stands for Troll Party. At least let us know what is happening.

  13. pete Says:

We can't abbreviate "what The Family"? It better be a glitch.

  14. Zooey Says:

    Wasn't there a Bill O'Reilly thread today?

  15. Zooey Says:

And there was a thread about Sen Stevens, too.

    Please explain, TP.

  16. pete Says:

    WTF? Indeed. Something's screwy.

  17. pete Says:

Like I said Zooey. They either got hacked or sued.

  18. Faiz Says:

Our tech team and tech consultants are trying to roll out some new changes to the site, but all it's doing is screwing things up. I wish I had some answers but I don't. It's very frustrating.

  19. Zooey Says:

Pete, either way they should explain what's going on. This is not cool.

  20. Zooey Says:

    Thanks, Faiz.

I hope you can get your posts and comments back. Did you properly vet your tech team & consultants? ;)

  21. pete Says:

Thanks Faiz. I'm glad it's nothing nefarious.

  22. Faiz Says:

I'm told all the posts after 4 pm have been lost forever.

  23. Zooey Says:

How can that be, Faiz? This post went up at 7 p.m.

That's unfortunate, except for the troll stuff. Don't worry though. I have plenty of angst to fill up new threads. And perhaps you've learned a lesson about fixing stuff that ain't broke?

  26. shaun Says:

how would they get the money back from al malaki? - send blackwater in to rob the bank?

  27. upside99 Says:

    Faiz,

Did the Repugs pay you to knock all those down!

    Sure looks suspicious!

  28. araratararat Says:

Bu$$hCo holds the American taxpayer's Iraqi reconstruction money in a secret Swiss bank account then transfers the money to the secret bank accounts set up in the Grand Cayman Islands for Halliburton, Blackwater, Fluor, Bechtel, Lincoln Propaganda Sleaze Group etc. etc....

That way there are no records of these funds having been disbursed or received and transmittal can not be proven so no taxes are ever due.

The upside down world of bu$$hCo where you, your family, your friends, and your good olde boy cronies and the top one percent income earners get filthy filthy rich as the rest of America bleeds from the mouth and the middle class becomes a quaint concept - that just out lived its usefulness and is rapidly being disbanded.

  29. Game of Life Says:

How about giving our money back?
    That's a great Idea!

Oh goodie! Glad to see some enhancement.

  31. Game of Life Says:

Damn, chimpy is all in Iraqi's finances.

So while our soldiers lacked proper weapons, hummers and gear, Iraqi accumulated a huge surplus.

Then again the surplus could be in direct correlation to the number of Iraqi deaths.

  32. House of Roberts Says:

I guess I better post once just to make sure I can. Test Test

  33. K Ols Says:

Byron Dorgan always makes sense, but I never see any of the congress critters taking his advice. I just don't get why not.

While we're at it use some of the Iraq budget surplus to pay back all the money Bush stole from the Social Security trust fund. Plus pass legislature that doesn't allow using the trust fund monies to make the national deficit appear much smaller than it is. Every president since Reagan has used the off budget S.S. trust fund to make the deficit appear smaller than it actually is.

  34. Bozo The Neoclown Says:

"That is a bankrupt strategy" supported by a bankrupt ideology known as conservatism. Even their name is dripping with irony considering how they like to spend MY tax dollars like drunken sailors on shore leave.

  35. Rowdy Says:

I am all for spending our own money here at home, but am I the only one who thinks that, well, we messed up their country, why shouldn't we pay to clean it up? I mean, I am totally against war and can't stand what we did to Iraq, but why should Iraq have to pay to clean up the mess America made? I think the better solution would be for Halliburton and KBR do the work to rebuild Iraq "Pro Bono" and for security while they are over there working to rebuild the infrastructure... Blackwater can provide FREE security 24/7 until the job is done!
