Richmond Residents Chastise Rove For His ‘Patronizing’ And ‘Belittling’ Comments About Their City

Last Sunday on CBS’s Face the Nation, Karl Rove attacked Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) by offering the following “patronizing comments” about the city of Richmond, Virginia:

With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he’s been a governor for three years, he’s been able but undistinguished. I don’t think people could really name a big, important thing that he’s done.

He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America. And again, with all due respect to Richmond, Virginia, it’s smaller than Chula Vista, California; Aurora, Colorado; Mesa or Gilbert, Arizona; north Las Vegas or Henderson, Nevada. It’s not a big town.

Watch it:

The residents of the Virginian capital are not taking Rove’s comments lying down. In an article entitled, “In belittling Richmond’s size, Rove shows he’s out of touch,” Richmond Times Dispatch journalist Michael Paul Williams writes, “Wow. And Republicans call Democrats elitist.”

“It appears that Karl Rove will swiftboat anyone, including cities,” said Del. Dwight Clinton Jones (D), a candidate for mayor. City Council President and mayoral candidate William Pantele added, “Richmond has more in culture, history and business than all those cities [cited by Rove] put together. And so, perhaps Mr. Rove would like to come see how terrific a place this is, the capital city of Virginia, rather than just taking shots on a news show.”

Williams notes that if physical size is such an important consideration, the current Vice President shouldn’t have been selected:

It should be pointed out that Cheney’s political career began in Wyoming, the least populous state in the nation. With fewer than 525,000 residents, it’s less than half the size of the Richmond metro area.

In a web-video posted on the Times Dispatch site, Williams calls Rove’s comments a “cynical and misguided viewpoint, out of touch with America and the real people with real problems who reside there.”

Digg It!

  1. Doc Rock says:

It’s fully understandable why Rove would be concerned about size!

  2. tom says:

Williams calls Rove’s comments a “cynical and misguided viewpoint, out of touch with America and the real people with real problems who reside there.

In other words, it was a typical comment for RoverBoy.

  3. Zimzone says:

Why isn’t anyone asking him why he refuses subpoenas?

Everyone appears to want his opinion, but none of the faux reporters ask a real question.

KKKarl, among political masters, you’re about the size or Richmond.

    oops

Yes, we’ve always know that the Dick-tator was compensating for size

“I don’t think people could really name a big, important thing that he’s done.”

I thought conservatives wanted government to do as little as possible.

  8. hussein toasterhead says:

Hey, it’s still better than Canton, South Dakota. Now that place is a shithole!

  9. misshusseinmolly says:

Thanks, Karl — I think you just turned Virginia blue whether Obama picks Kaine or not.

  10. McWars says:

If Kaine can’t get anything done it’s because of the republican obstruction in the House. The Senate didn’t pick up a slim democratic majority until recently. Best example: his transportation bill.

The one-term limit doesn’t help much, either.

  11. stateofthedivision says:

It’s also the site of Patrick Henry’s speech:

“Give me liberty, or give me death!”

That must scare the bejeezus out of Karl. He went to considerable trouble to research the relative size of Richmond proper. Leaving out the Metropolitan Statistical Area is the statistical counterpart to word parsing.

The area around Richmond has grown considerably the last few decades. Karl would do well not to offend nearly a million people.

  12. McWars says:

Ah, now that brings me joy, Misshusseinmolly.

  13. raynman says:

Let’s examine Rove’s Logic, shall we?

    Richmond, VA: population 200,000

George W. Bush. Born in New Haven, CT. Population: 124,000

Dick Cheney. Born in Lincoln, NE. Population:248,000. Raised in Casper, WY. Population: 49,644

And in the kicker. Karl Rove. Born in Denver, CO. Population: 588,000. Raised in Sparks, NV. Population: 90,000

  14. DwH says:

And still, the fat bloviator who has nothing to say gets a spot in the media and his words are repeated here.

Ignore him. Please marginalize him. He is NOT news. His words are campaign rhetoric.

    Argh, more Ned Beatty flashbacks…

  17. stateofthedivision says:

The Founding Father’s ties to Richmond are deep and long. Karl and his Bush league company defecated on their ideals, multiple times.

It’s time for the people to gather up on Churchill. Patrick Henry is speaking. I hear it’s gonna be a heck of a speech. Listen close folks.

It’s time to reclaim our liberty from pinheads like Karl. That means a pox on the House of McCain. The stain has gone on for eight torturous years. May it end soon.

  18. VerbalKint says:

Rove is sending a message to all the other “little” cities that form his base: toe the line, or he will smear them too.

  19. McWars says:

Kaine is making it up the chain no faster than Spiro Agnew, who went from county executive to governor to vice president in six years.

Gov. Kaine is guilty of “enhancing” his resume.
    _____________________________________________________________

Are you suggesting that Kaine isn’t the Governor of Virginia? Are you suggesting that he wasn’t the Mayor of Richmond? How is putting these on his resume “enhancing” it?

Try this — provide a link instead of just flinging poo.

  22. McWars says:

    Gooey

Your schtick is old. Can someone explain to me what the troll obsession with Zoeey is about — from her personal finances, to her educational pursuits, etc. For government-hating conservatives, they sure are as bad as they accuse the government of being.

Note to idiot trolls grasping at straws: A mayorship is a mayorship. You don’t manage people, you manage an institution.

  23. Keith H. says:

Why this criminal gets face time on the tube to spew his crap is beyond me. There are no doubt people that are paying the networks for his time. I really doubt if there’s anyone that cares to hear a word he has to say.
What happened to congress holding him in contempt ?
Oh, I almost forgot, nancy’s the speaker and the rest of them are her little ducks in a row.

  24. McWars says:

Gov. Kaine is guilty of “enhancing” his resume.

And all of his elected majorities were in on it.

  25. McWars says:

I think the best point was made at the beginning of this Kaine-VP speculation: Kaine’s urban experience can lend to an Obama presidency, and Kaine can mesh well with Obama as his chief advisor because of that shared experience.

  26. DRxJ says:

    Rove demoralizing? Belittling?
    Really?

    Anyone remember McCain 2000?

(oh, and Gooey, I got yer “hate” site, right here!)

  27. stateofthedivision says:

Dennis, I grew up in Richmond. Was there but weeks ago, visiting family. While it carried the stain of segregation, it’s role in the founding of our country is clear.

On March 23, 1775, Washington, Jefferson, George Wythe, Patrick Henry and other members of the Second Virginia Convention, gathered at St. John’s Church, Richmond; the torch of Liberty was kindled by the inspired words of Patrick Henry, “Give me liberty . . . or give me death!”

    Karl’s a nit.

  28. McWars says:

    You are brilliant, stateofthedivision.

Ad hominen attacks against their opponents is stock and trade for Republicans. When you don’t have truth on your side there’s little else you can do. While it’s not at all surprising that Republicans accuse Democrats as being elitist, it is surprising that anyone believes it given the reality.

  31. misshusseinmolly says:

Rove has proved he knows how to get to census.gov and look up data. Bravo.

But did he notice that all the cities he compared Richmond to are suburbs, whereas Richmond is the center of a metro area? Oh, I’m sure he noticed that, and it was deliberate.

He could have compared Richmond to Little Rock or Salt Lake City (both of which are smaller than Richmond, but are similar in that they are capital cities of their states as well as the center of their metro areas). But he wanted to belittle the size of Richmond, not enhance it.

It’s true that Gilbert, AZ is slightly larger than Richmond, but the character of the town is a great deal different. It’s merely a bedroom community for Phoenix, making it a perfect place (as are the other places on Rove’s list) to paint Richmond as insignificant.

All that aside, the citizens of Virginia apparently felt that Kaine’s political resume was sufficient to elect him Lt. Governor and then Governor. It would seem to me then that the size of Richmond is completely irrelevant.

  32. stateofthedivision says:

That’s the problem with government leaders today, most are actors. They don’t know the basics of leadership, but fill their pockets with the people’s money.

  33. tom says:

What RoverBoy always neglects to mention is that GDumbya’s supposed “qualifications” are all suspect:

    1) his military “service” — with Poppy’s help, he jumped over the backs of everyone on the TANG waiting list; he piloted a plane that was retired from use in combat and also let it be know that he “declined” overseas assignment; he deserted the TANG when he feared his drug abuse would be discovered in a flight physical

    2) his oil business — he drilled dry holes and burned through Poppy’s friends’ money

    3) his MLB job — he was a front man for the Rangers who managed to make his masters rich by engineering a land-grab for their new stadium

    4) Texas governorship — Texas is a weak governor/strong Congress form of government; GDumbya was little more than a figurehead and babysitter

  34. McWars says:

which was little more than a stepping stone for him

No, it’s called a career in politics — the noble way. Unlike all of those Bush appointees who skipped the usual rungs of the government ladder by lounging in corporate America.

Councilman to Mayor to Lieutenant Governor to Governor to VP?. That’s the ’start from scratch’ way of making it in American politics, and shame on you for refusing to see the light.

  35. A Patriot Acting says:

I find it hysterically ironic that the troll Gooey has the balls to assert that Kaine “padded” his resume. This toady sure hasn’t had any problem with an Administration that spent seven years searching out and hiring incompetents to every level of Government whose sole hiring point was being a Republican bootlicker. No resume needed for Bush’s crew. If anything he has gone out of his way to hire as many foxes as he can to guard the hen houses. Being a legitimately elected official allready gives Kaine one up on Herr Georgie, doesn’t it Gooey? Gooey??

  36. A Patriot Acting says:

    Keep talking Karl!

In fact, 14 of the House Judiciary members felt it appropriate that people REFUSE to APPEAR upon SUBPOENA to cite their immunity privilege, if any, and therefore thinking that OBSTRUCTION of JUSTICE is an American principle.

  55. davidual says:

Okay, without reading any other post, I must comment that the reason Rove made these remarks about Richmond, VA is because he is hoping to goad O8ama into picking Tom Kaine for his VP. He’s attempting to give Kaine enough Republican negative publicity that O8ama instinctively tries to turn the negative into a positive.
Rove is a slimy little sleaze ball.

Possibly he’s thinking that if O8ama doesn’t pick Kaine then he can come back and use his own (Rove’s) negative comments against O8ama in the GE, and attempt to swing Virginia red again.

    Beware the slimy little sleazeball.
