The good news is El Tinklenberg is polling well among independent voters (somewhere in the vicinity of 70%, IIRC). I grew up in a small town in northern MN with very few ethnic minorities and encountered a lot of bizarre ideas about race. That was nothing compared to what I saw in St. Cloud. As a result of my experience there, I'm afraid I wasn't surprised to see the area willing to elect a nutjob like Bachmann.
