McCain: Gitmo is ‘one of the nicest places in the world to live in.’

During a question-and-answer session with Walter Isaacson today, Sen. John McCain said Guantanamo Bay is “one of the nicest places in the world to live in.” Later in the interview, McCain was asked about the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Boumediene v. Bush declaring that Gitmo detainees have a right to challenge their detention in civilian court. McCain had previously derided that decision as “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country,” but today stepped back from that comment:

ISAACSON: But you called that the worst decision in history?

MCCAIN: No I didn’t. No, no– Sometimes I’m given to a little hyperbole.

Watch the video (via Progressive Accountability):

In 2003, McCain said, “A serious process must be established in the very near term either to formally treat and process the detainees as war criminals or to return them to their countries for appropriate judicial action.”

Digg It!

Issacson and the Aspen Institute sure know how to embarras themselves by having this idiot speak there. Never mind that Mccain is an embarressement to the Country every time hew opens his mouth.

    What a jerk.

  6. Jim Wolf359 says:

I wonder if Gitmo is as nice as Aspen in the middle of summer? I think McCain should go there himself to find out.

  7. Jim Wolf359 says:

To Gitmo, I mean. He’s already been to Aspen twice this summer. Time for a change of seanery methinks.

  8. leftcoast says:

McCain’s flippant remarks and vain attempts at humor are going to get us into serious trouble if he’s elected. Every time he does this he has to backtrack and someone from his campaign has to correct the world’s interpretation. He’s on the world stage and crackin’ jokes. “Oh, he’s folksy”. Well, do us a favor, McCain, and quit taking your show on the road. And one more thing while I’m giving advice; you do not speak for the American people when there is an international crisis.

  9. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Or a lot of hyperbole… depending on whether or not his meds have kicked in yet…

  10. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Flip McCain: I didn’t say it.
Flop McCain: What I said was hyperbole.

Now there’s something to poll – would we rather have a President who lies about what he says or one who is “prone to hyperbole”? “I didn’t order the nuclear bombing of Iran” vs. “Sometimes I lose my temper. As Dick Cheney would say: ‘So?’”

  14. Another Joe says:

I can’t believe that mccain is such a batsh#t candidate – absolutely nuts. While dur chimpfurher was totally unqualified for office (alcoholic/cocaine addict that went AWOL), the MSM successfully “catapulted the propaganda” by presenting him as a real candidate in 2000.

Now we are seen an insane man that obviously has at least the early signs of dementia – even the MSM cannot cover this up, though they are doing their best.

Of course, anyone that thinks obama stands for meaningful change is not paying attention either – perhaps the elite behind these candidates know that they need a democrat to be the fall-guy for the mess chimpy and the repugs have made.

We are in trouble – a choice between these 2 bozos is bad news.

  17. tigger says:

Unbelievable that a former POW would say this.

    And inexcusable.

  18. Another Joe says:

Hussein McCain – are you paying attention?

Obama sold out Chicago’s poor by giving away massive amounts of government monies to private interests, even though they created substandard housing, thousands of units are no longer even inhabitable.

He sold us out on FISA, despite promises to the contrary

While he used to campaign against Hillary on the “Iraq war was wrong and a mistake”, he now supports continuing the war crimes and crimes against humanity.

He advocates endless wars in the Middle East and actually takes the same stands as mccain and bush

Instead of providing any meaningful leadership or answers to high concentrations of poverty, unemployment, and dysfunctional schools in urban communities with large populations of African Americans, he plays the same “personal responsibility” card that the repugs use, blaming victems of structural poverty

Obama does not support meaningful healthcare reform. His plan is nothing but handouts to large healthcare providers and insurance companies

Obama has restarted the lies that Social Security is in “crisis”, indicating he will restart the bamboozle tour that started chimpy’s political downfall after stealing the 2004 election

Sorry, but people that think this is positive change and “yes we can” are not paying attention.

  19. Fred says:

    Another Joe Says:

Believe what you want, you obviously do and I’m sorry for you that you are not able to see any further into the realities than you seem to be able to see.

In the meantime lets just evaluate who really supports the troops since mccain is such a big flag waver and all.

Who really supports the troops. Click on it at your own risk righties.

Yes – the choices are awful, do you wonder why that is and how we get such terrible representatives?

Perhaps one reason is the tendency of some to Pretend that candidates stand for our hopes and ideals when then facts show otherwise.

Another reason is the inability of some people to see past tweedle-dum and tweedle dee, constantly demonizing one candidate and while putting the other on a pedestal.

Google the facts I presented earlier – easy to find sources, judge them yourselves, vote your conscious, but respectfully, I am not your monkey.

    http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=2&vote=00015

    Parse it for us, please.

How did Obama act to preserve your inalienable Right to pursue Justice should ANY president order you surveilled,
    WARRANTLESSLY?

What does it mean should he become the next DECIDER in this matter, now having a record to have been against it before he was for it?

How does his vote to strip Americans of this inalienable Right to pursue Justice support a position of “CHANGE” should he be elected into the Office of President of the U.S.A.? Is this any different than what Bush wished of Congress?

You can not prove that the next president will have a Congress capable of rewriting legislation to undo the votes cast by the Senate.

You can not prove that the next Congress won’t sabotage the necessary legislation needed to undo this unconstitutional act and force the next president to VETO said legislation.

You can not prove that the next president just won’t VETO good legislation to protect his authority to WARRANTLESS surveil you… and there still won’t be a darn thin you can do about it.

So, how is this “CHANGE” that you can believe in? When in fact, the only thing we know is that Americans no longer have a avenue of redress for grievances… and Obama’s vote does not prove otherwise.

McTorture will have the same position should he be elected, too with the exception that the Senior Senator forgot to show up and place that vote.

What…? Will Obama issue a signing statement to override Congressional legislation? And that’s “CHANGE”?

Or will he wait for the Supreme Court to rule this aspect of the Law, UNCONSTITUTIONAL? … Thus indicting his vote as a vote against the Republic.

IMPEACHMENT is the ONLY answer to solve this dilemma.

WHY IS T.P. SILENT ON IMPEACHMENT?

    Now,
please understand that I’m not attacking you or your character, rather the position that Obama supporters are holding. “CHANGE” is not “CHANGE” if the next Decider is placed into an Office UNCHANGED!

    p.s.
I was for Obama before he was against my inalienable Right to pursue Justice!

Farsighted is seeing the impact this lie has upon the future of our longstanding Birth Rights.

The reach of these decisions and flip/flops(read lies) is damaging to the Republic. However, for the time being(read: short sightedness) this man promises to TRY to do otherwise.

The person who sees things shortsightedly is the man who believes that he won’t get fooled… AGAIN!

I can’t believe that McCain would imply that a detention camp, regardless of where it’s located, would be a desirable place. I understand that North Vietnam was located in the tropics, but I doubt that he’d want to return to the Hanoi Hilton.

But now that John McCain’s given his endorsement, maybe this years Republican National Convention can move its most climatic session to Guanatamo Bay. If its a nice place to live, it must be a heckuva place for a nomination!

Sure, Joe needs to deliver, not rest on the adage, “Google it”. A sure sign that he’s being intellectually lazy. Now, with that said, who’s up for an occupation of Afghanistan? This too, I have my reservations on as Obama seeks to shift the troops from Iraq to Afghanistan… and keep the “WAR OF TERROR” alive.

Sorry, I may be a bit pessimistic, but then again, reviewing what these last 8 years have delivered and how the Senate has continually avoided accountability for injustices perpetrated on a lie(read: GOT CENSURE?) I have grave doubts about the future of the Republic.

IF someone can fix this major F-up we are in, great! More power to ‘em. But until America is capable of addressing it’s unique global policing presence and the effect it has on humanity, things aren’t gonna change.

I didn’t know that voting for “other” candidates was unacceptable in America. So, then why vote at all if we no longer respect the fact that we’re supposed to be living in a Democratic Republic.

Cowering people to vote for the prescribed candidate is tantamount to Authoritarian Rule. You know, an antithetical principle to what America USED TO stand for.

You do know that the Iraqis were cowered to vote for Saddam… NO? You know, the prescribed candidate of “choice”. Albeit, the only candidate that was ever to be “THE” choice. And no, I am not equating anyone to Saddam, just using him as an example of what Americans are supposed to possess a certain amount of disdain for what he created…

I’ve been hearing this same song and dance from LOYALISTS for over two decades now… The meme never changes, only the names of the candidates are changed to protect the identity of “The Party”!

Ironic projection. Your entire support for Obama was based on your laziness. You didn’t look at his platform, or his policies, and you didn’t listen to people like me who repeatedly pointed out what he stood for. Then reality set in when he voted in a way I predicted, and you ignored.

However he and his mindless, hateful, shouting and LAZY supporters (that would be you and the Zooniacs, etc.,) and Obama’s complete abuse of the nomination and voters rights has left me unwilling to vote for him. It’s a shame – because I can’t stand McCain…
