McCain campaign throws Social Security’s birthday cake in the trash.

In honor of the 73rd anniversary of President Franklin Roosevelt’s signing of the Social Security Act, the New Mexico Democratic Party attempted to sing “Happy 73rd Birthday to Social Security” outside of a McCain campaign office, “only to have the birthday cake thrown in the trash by the campaign”:

While McCain supporters screamed, “Obama sleeps with a Teddy Bear and a night light,” staffers approached the Democratic group, yelling, took the 20 inch sheet cake that said “Happy Birthday Social Security” and threw it away.

Conchita Cruz, the press secretary for the Democratic Party of New Mexico, called the cake trashing a “perfect metaphor” for McCain’s approach to Social Security policy.

Disgusting – yes, mccain is an incredibly lame candidate – especially after 8 year of dur chimpfurher.

But don’t kid yourself – obama has shamelessly “catapulted” the lie that Social Security, the most successful federal program of all-time, is in crisis.

Happy 74rd Birthday to Social Security (SS). It was a humane and thoughtful plan created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Administration. The vicious, vile and hateful right-wing in America has been trying to destroy it for many years. I can understand why Bush 2 is upset: FDR busted his father for trading with and aiding Hitler and the German Nazis in 1942 by enforcing the “Trading with the Enemy Act” during World War II. Who knows by Ronald Reagan was against SS; probably it was just a knee-jerk reaction by a knee-jerk…

  3. Above the Clouds says:

They should have put sprinkles on the cake. Doesn’t Grandpa McCain dig sprinkles?

  4. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Sorry, make that Happy 73rd Birthday to Social Security…

  7. Zooey says:

When is McCain returning his Social Security money…?

  8. misshusseinmolly says:

” ‘Obama sleeps with a teddy bear and a night light’?” Wow, that’s mature. And so is throwing a cake into the garbage. If they didn’t like the Dems celebrating Social Security outside their office, they could have just ignored them.

You just like putting words in other peoples mouths or are you just trying to make a point that doesn’t exist.

If social security is in crisis it is not because the program doesn’t work, it is because the republicans insist on using as thier own personal general fund because they just can’t stand for it to be working. keep your hands off of our social security. I don’t think the American people have ever spoken more clearly and that I think is the point Obama is making.

John McShame is a clueless, classless buffoon. He will sellout and bend over to anyone to be president. I sure would like to see a new poll of those 65 and over who support him now.

“This is the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. The foregoing history may not be precisely accurate in every particular; but I am sure it is sufficiently so for all the uses I shall attempt to make of it, and in it we have before us, the chief materials enabling us to correctly judge whether the repeal of the Missouri Compromise is right or wrong.

“I think, and shall try to show, that it is wrong; wrong in its direct effect, letting slavery into Kansas and Nebraska-and wrong in its prospective principle, allowing it to spread to every other part of the wide world, where men can be found inclined to take it.

“This declared indifference, but, as I must think, covert real zeal for the spread of slavery, I cannot but hate. I hate it because of the monstrous injustice of slavery itself. I hate it because it deprives our republican example of its just influence in the world-enables the enemies of free institutions, with plausibility, to taunt us as hypocrites-causes the real friends of freedom to doubt our sincerity, and especially because it forces so many really good men amongst ourselves into an open war with the very fundamental principles of civil liberty-criticizing the Declaration of Independence, and insisting that there is no right principle of action but self-interest.

  20. cavjam says:

Throwing Social Security’s birthday cake in the trash – man, that’s some metaphor.

If there were a planet named Stupid orbiting a star named Stupid which was part of the constellation Stupid in the Stupid Galaxy, these McCain staffers would be shuttled off the planet for being too stupid to be allowed to breed and endanger the future. Of course, the propulsion would fail and they’d crash and drown in the two-foot-deep Sea of Stupid and they’d forever be part of Stupid culture as a warning to the children of what happens when you’re really frickin’ stupid.

The McCain campaign is indeed the goose that lays the pyrite eggs, the gift that keeps on giving.

  21. Fool Zero says:

    Wonder what the moral is.

    (Don’t) Let them eat cake?

You can’t trash your cake and eat it too?

  22. Gregor Samsa says:

There is something deeply ironic about RHF calling others “insane, paranoid, and hateful”.

As for the McCain staffers, I agree their action is a good metaphor.

To make it a perfect metaphor, they should have taken a big piece for themselves, then thrown away the rest so nobody else could enjoy it. Now that would have been the perfect metaphor for the “I’ve got mine, screw you” Republicans.

  23. barfly says:

So, destruction of private property, and assault. Give these creeps a few nights in jail, with the domestic violence drunks, and gang bangers. They’d fit right in.

  24. Jess Wonderin says:

So McCain thinks so little of a program to help AMERICAN WORKING folks?

Funny, with over $6 MILLION a YEAR in INCOME, McCain takes his $28,000 SS payments with nary a care . . . don’t see THOSE CHECKS being tossed in the TRASH.

  25. KayInMaine says:

Just pathetic. This is another new low for the McCrazies.

  26. Kay says:

    Nov.5th : McLoser’s Campaign will be in the trash…

  27. KayInMaine says:

What’s so interesting about Johnny’s people throwing the Social Security cake in the trash is….after Katrina drowned a couple thousand people in New Orleans in their attics, Johnny and his BFF George Bush ate cake together

  28. Left Coast Mike says:

    Zooey Says:

When is McCain returning his Social Security money…?

All of the Republicans in Congress that are eligible for SS should refuse it if they don’t believe in it. I think if you are of age to draw SS and make over $250,000 a year you should not be allowed to draw any of it…..

  29. kasinca says:

McSame is pandering to the 23% who listen to Rush on radio and watch FAUX to get their daily hate. He has nothing ot offer but more of the same destruction of the US and our way of life. McSame is not what this country needs.

  30. Above the Clouds says:

Social Security is a daily reminder for Republicans that programs designed to help people are good and folks want them. This flies in the face of the Grover Nordquist-GOP crowd who want to destroy these programs and put government in the hands of Ted Stevens, Tom DeLay, and Newt Gingrich.

  31. 00mpp00 says:

Oh, to have an opportunity to throw McCain himself in the trash. He’s certainly beyond his “use by” date…

  32. bratboy says:

The same idiots who threw the cake into the trash will be the first ones in line with their hands out when it comes time for them to start collecting SS.
    These are typical right-wing hypocrites.

  35. henry wallace says:

Interesting thing about McNuttys SS is that for him it’s probably a days wages and for the elitist Obama it would probably be used in a more normal way say as payments on daily life expenses.

  36. DallasNE says:

Such bitterness. Why are Republicans so driven by hate. I wonder how those pictures will play down in Florida or over in Arizona. Even Joe Klein thinks that McCain needs to better control his campaign as he seems to think that McCain is better than his sick campaign. I just think that Klein really doesn’t know McCain very well; only the PR image of McCain. McCain’s own words show him to be a bitter and callous old man with delusions about power.

Actually it’s more of a simile, unless it was a like or as cake.

  40. Uncle Ho says:

Actually; what could be MORE SYMBOLIC than the McCain throwing that cake into the trash?
McCain has called SS a disgrace, and his campaign workers trash a birthday cake for SS.

I only pray there is a video of that incident and it should be run in Obama campaign ads mercilessly.

If that happens, kiss the senior vote a BIG GOODBYE.

    He’s toast.

  41. Luis M says:

“The cake is a lie!” (Sorry… geeky humor)

Back to topic. Can the staffers be charged with anything for throwing away that cake which wasn’t theirs to begin with?

  42. bryan hussein says:

It’s a fitting simile to what the Republicans and McCain’s camp plan for Social Security.

The AFL-CIO came out with a fantastic mailer related to the subject with the tag:

“John McCain wants to gamble with our social security. . .”

Flip the card and it says:

    “He can affordit. We can’t.”

  43. ForTruth says:

What a flip-flopper. McCain really liked cake when N.O. was underwater.

  44. Linus says:

    Re #13

Krazny says: If Obama sleeps with a teddy bear and a night light, does that mean McCain sleeps with depends a tube of icy hot?

Yup! And on a rubber sheet and with his teeth in a glass.

  45. ucsbclassics53 says:

I hope this was caught on tape, because this is a DNC ad waiting to happen…F those Republicans who would then cry out that this was gutter politics and negative campaigning…
