Limbaugh: U.S. should consume energy like Michael Phelps consumes food.

oh7.jpgYesterday, press reports revealed that Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps consumes a 12,000 calorie per day diet, six times the average calorie intake for a 23-year-old man. On his radio show today, Rush Limbaugh said that since extra energy helped produce excellence in Phelps, drilling for more oil would do the same for the U.S.:

But now we read that Michael Phelps is burning and using 12,000 calories a day, while the Democrats are trying to alert everybody to the dangers posed by energy. The Democrats and left are now demonizing oil, they’re demonizing our own ability to be energy independent. They don’t want us to be able to get our own independent sources of oil or natural gas. Yet, look at Michael Phelps. [...]

American consumption for the greatest production and the greatest rewards, why, that is fine if we do this in sports. However, if we consume and produce exceptionalism in goods and services for others, including ourselves, then somehow we are committing a sin.

  1. abarts says:

People like Rush already consume more than enough calories. Or Oxy.

  2. Fan of Man says:

    that makes sense how?

  3. upside99 says:

Poor rusher, his Oxy tolerance has gotten so much higher. He can’t self med enough to keep his brain from short circuiting.

But he does speak like a true Repug; Use as much as you can, Cheney the kids and grandkids.

C’mon trolls, let’s hear your support for this assklown!

  4. ralph the wonder llama says:

Okay, Michael Phelps consumes 12,000 calories a day and produces gold medals.

Rush Limbaugh consumes 12,000 calories a day (give or take) and just gets fatter.

    ‘Nuff said.

  5. sectionop92 says:

Well Rush does both, but his waistline has him looking like a shiny Pyrite Zeppelin, with his mouth providing all he needs to stay up in the air and defy physics, decency and rationality. He goes where only Jackbooted Sexist NeoCon Ass Clowns Dare!

  6. Keith says:

    From wiki definition for exceptionalism:
“Countries of all kinds, including the modern United States, Britain at the height of the British Empire, Imperial Japan, Iran, Venezuela, Israel, the USSR and Nazi Germany have claimed manifest exceptionality, as have many historic empires such as Ancient Rome and China,….”

  7. phred42 says:

What I want to know is – Who are the dim bulbs that NEED to be lied to and who NEED to hear this crap?

Oh yeah – conservative authoritarian children

  8. Crusty Old Bastard says:

    “…then somehow we are committing a sin…”

Limpballs, they only sin in sight is your mouth. Your brain would fall into that category if we could see any indication that you had one.

  9. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Why even give any coverage of what that fat bloated pig Rush Limpdick has to say? By the way isn’t it time for his annual Dominican Republican get away where he gobbles down his doctors viagra and preys on young male prostitutes?

  10. dixie blood says:

Rush The OxyMoron says, “[the left are] demonizing our own ability to be energy independent.”

Actually it’s the other way around you loud mouth, blow hard, fool!

  11. Leftside Annie says:

That obese pile of crap ought to choke on his next 10,000 calorie meal and drop dead.

  12. zuch says:

Does it need to be pointed out that His Emanence Rush is an eedjit? In particular, it seems that heavy caloric consumption in his case hardly “proves” his suggested thesis.

To be fair, though, Rush is perhaps not quite the eedjit that Michele Bachmann is, as witnesses by posts below these last couple of days….

    Cheers,

  13. T R L says:

and ditto heads consume stupid like limpballs consumes oxy

  14. Wayne says:

Just when you think Limburger could not have said anything less intellegent, he surprises us all again.

Rushingdownthedrugaddictionmountain is a walking logical fallacy. How in the world could any sentient being take this man seriously or listen to his crap without throwing up?

  16. sectionop92 says:

Does Rush swallow the Viagra pills or grind them into powder to push past the “four-hour” danger zone? Because no matter what, sick fu(k druggies NEVER take their doctor’s advice.

  17. joe cantwell says:

    and exercise?

  18. Bozo The Neoclown says:

only a total assclown like limpballs would make this false comparison. only total assclowns like his listeners would believe his happy horseshit.

  19. ralph the wonder llama says:

Actually, since the US possesses less than 2% of the world’s oil and uses 25% of the world’s consumption, I think the model is already pretty close to Limpbaugh’s ideal.

  20. Buckie Boy says:

Rush “child molester” Limpballs is about the most vile person on the planet, and his supporters and listeners are not far behind.

It is obvious that his consumption of food is way to high, and his consumption of knowledge is on empty.

  21. EugeneDebs says:

What else could we expect from the idiot who said the problem with liberals is we never taught our children how to slaughter the cow to get the butter? The man is blazing new trails into the realm of abject stupidity

  22. SP Biloxi says:

“Limbaugh: U.S. should consume energy like Michael Phelps consumes food.”

Dipping too much into the pain killers, eh? If only the American people can keep their winter weight looking good on all year around like Limpbaugh. ;-)

  23. celtic cynic says:

Gotta love Rush. He’s as batshit crazy as Michele Bachman, John Hagee, George Bush and the other looney Tunes.

Perhaps they could drill into his brain or capture the expelled gas from the other end. It would be enough to power three or four large cities for years.

  24. sectionop92 says:

You should listen to Rush if you need:

Tips on Oxy grinding and use.

How to beg for mercy in front of a judge.

How to please a judge in multiple positions and fashions.

How to get both your own TV show canceled and thrown off a cable TV sports show, where your only job is a segment spot.

Where to get the best suits that goes in two different directions.

How to talk about nothing, not be funny at it and still have people praise you for it.

  25. Bozo The Neoclown says:

somone ought to point out to limpballs that his average listener also consumes 12,000 calories of transfat soaked fast food daily. There’s a term for that: obesity also known as gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins. Now, a good christian such as rush wouldn’t be promoting gluttony on his program, would he?

  26. McWars says:

The U.S. was already consuming tons of energy, but now we’re scaled back the painful way — $4.00 gas and hiked electricity rates.

But Rush and his $400M can absorb those price increases with pocket change, or pocket lint.

Rush’s ownership of multiple vehicles, including a private jet, make most Americans red wagon owners by comparison.

    Such a non-elitist.

  27. pete says:

Energy consumption, especially gasoline, is going down and it’s not likely to turn around any time soon. Despite the best efforts of gasbags like Lush Rimjob, the population of the Earth is learning that we MUST change the way we think about burning hydrocarbons.

Just like the successful battle waged against particulate emissions and lead since the 1960’s, the ingenuity of the World’s best and brightest is turning to cleaner burning, conservation, and green alternatives.

If Lush and his ilk gave a rat’s rump about our country? They would be challenging American industry to keep up with the rest of the industrialized world. But, it’s entirely likely that we will be forced to go abroad for the very technology we should be developing ourselves.

German photovoltaic systems and Chinese smoke scrubbers will replace foreign oil as a cash drain if the Reichwingers get their way. But, what can one expect from those who think world domination will be the reward for running out of petroleum first?

  28. Paul W says:

Limbaugh’s arrogance is surpassed only by his stupidity.

    http://progressiveworldreview.com

  29. pete says:

BTW. Did anyone else catch the news that, in light of the recent slide in gas prices, refineries have cut back production? How else would gasoline supplies go down, driving prices back up, when consumption has been cut without a cut in supply of crude?

  30. TonyC says:

<<Limbaugh: U.S. should consume energy like Michael Phelps consumes food.»

    Um, Rush…? We already do…

  31. LibertyLover says:

Why are all of you arugula and bean sprout eating elitists being so mean to Rushbo? Thank bob that Rush only had a high school “edumacation” so that he doesn’t have to really think logically about what he is saying. He is the Vox populi is he not?

  32. katy says:

    … huh?

    really? … he said that?

    are his listeners THAT stoopid?

    … really?

  33. LibertyLover says:

Oops. That last post WAS a bit snarky. I apologize.

  34. katy says:

anybody else experiencing a slowdown of typing,
    and loading/refreshing here at TP?

    awww…

  35. pete says:

“Invested in defeat”? How can there be a defeat when the Reich has proclaimed victory? Twice?

“Slave to foreign oil”? The only way to increase our dependence on foreign oil (BTW, most of our oil comes from Canada, Mexico, domestic production, and Venezuela. And we are currently the third largest oil producing nation on Earth.) is to increase consumption. The only way to permanently reduce our dependence on foreign supplies is to decrease consumption. It’s simple mathematics.

  36. stateofthedivision says:

Leadership leads to great accomplishments, to outstanding products and services. Bush, Rush and the Republican party understand nothing about such leadership. What do they know about systems, knowledge, variation, and psychology and their interaction? Nothing.

But an American compiled the body of leadership theory, Dr. W. Edwards Deming. His teachings caught on after the 1980’s oil crisis, when Detroit made junk. But after his passing in the mid 90’s, American leaders took the Mexican, then Chinese junk rout to maximize executive compensation. Oh, and those “exceptional” American leaders cheated by the yachtload on their annual renumeration. Recall the 10-12 year period of stock option backdating?

If management were to spend as much time and effort to improve processes as they do ranking, rating, reward and punishment for people at the top and at the bottom, the results would be stupendous improvement of our economic position.

‘Lack of knowledge…that is the problem”-W. Edwards Deming

  37. EugeneDebs says:

    TripleKick 11 Says:
gas guzzling dittos. Rush understands American exceptionalism. Too bad it’s completely lost on the left. Oil use has of course been the fuel for American greatness. It’s a sad state that the left finds itself both invested in defeat and a slave to foreign oil. Bring on November.

What is sad BESIDES your abject stupidity is your investment in getting as many Americans killed as humanly possible and your ignorant belief that stupidity is the way out of our energy problems. Keep driving toward the cliff for goodness sake we wouldnt expect anything else from you. I mean you are of the Limborg. You have been assmiliated and the hivemind has gotta be as stupid as the hivemind is.

  38. LibertyLover says:

Tell you what, Rush. If Congress enacts a law that states that the oil companies can ONLY sell their/OUR oil in the USA, then, I might consider off-shore drilling, but ONLY after the oil companies have also drilled on all the land that they have leases on NOW, BEFORE they start drilling offshore or in ANWAR — AND they use some of BILLION $$$ of profit that they have to build their own refineries. Then, and only then, we can talk.

  39. EugeneDebs says:

    katy Says:

    … huh?

    really? … he said that?

    are his listeners THAT stoopid?

    … really?

Yes Katy sadly they ARE that stooopid. Just read the pure unadlterated ignorance of Triplemoron and Tank for proof

  40. pete says:

Then there’s this part of the argument. Dang! I can’t find a working link. I’ll post it when I find it. It was from an oil industry journal in early ‘08 if it rings an bells out there.

In addition, new hydrocarbon fields are increasingly found in deep-water regions that are arduous to exploit. The paucity of the specialized equipment needed to extract oil from such new reserves has created a bottleneck in future offshore production. The world’s current fleet of specialized drill ships is booked until 2013. The price of building such a vessel has taken a five-fold jump to $500 million in the last year. The cost of crucial materials — such as steel for rigs and pipelines — has risen sharply. So, too, have salaries for skilled manpower in the industry. Little wonder then that while, in 2002, it cost $150,000 a day to hire a deep-water rig, it now costs four times as much.

  41. McWars says:

    Prove it, bathtub gin.

Employer compensation…whodathunkit? How do you think most Americans pay for their fuel, cheap gin?

  42. stateofthedivision says:

Dang, Rush needs a writer. This comparison went over like his dig on “dumb porpoises”. Rush’s old schtick went something like this:

If they’re so smart, why are they caught in nets. You’d think they’d learn not to hang around tuna.

Gee Rush, maybe porpoises and tuna share the same food source? Noted management guru encouraged people to ask why five times to get at root causes of system problems.

Why does Rush promote fiction? In 2001 James Baker’s Institute issued a report saying America couldn’t be energy dependent, given its strong reliance on oil. Conclusion #6 on page 5 of the report stated:

U.S. energy independence is not attainable…

  43. EugeneDebs says:

    TripleKick 11 Says:

pathetic how tp kids still mock rush’s past (and beat) struggle with pain killer adiction, post surgery. It speaks volumes on your collective soul. especially considering Obama himself is an admitted past coke head. Consistency is the key to being taken seriously.

Well if consistancy is the key you are clearly consistant in your incredible stupidity. Wasnt Rush touting harsh penalties FOR illegal drug users WHILE he was addicted? Do you have any conception of the term HYPOCRISY? Does Obama tout punishment over treatment for drug users? Why no RUSH DID. He is a hypocrite. Sadly you are just an idiot

  44. McWars says:

Have other news for ya, Tanq.: Rush is already stuck on the bottom of my shoe. No smear attempt required.

Poor little troll, Rush’s unpaid surf.

  45. Bozo The Neoclown says:

you consistently make no sense and none of us take you seriously.

  46. ralph the wonder llama says:

    TripleKick 11 Says:

gas guzzling dittos. Rush understands American exceptionalism. Too bad it’s completely lost on the left.

TK, we understand “American exceptionalism” just fine.

The thing is, most of us grew out of that “world revolves around me” mindset as part of normal development — y’know, around age 6.

  47. gummitch says:

    Potters Gin Says:

    McWars Says:
Rush’s ownership of multiple vehicles, including a private jet

Now that is just an F’ing lie!! Rush does not own a private jet. He is provided a jet by his employer as part of his compensation package!

    Nice smear attempt, jerk.

Oh, well, that’s completely different! He doesn’t actually own the jet, but he has the jet for his personal use. That probably means it burns less fuel, right? Or maybe he doesn’t actually fly around in it because he doesn’t really own it.

    Nice jerk success.

  48. Bozo The Neoclown says:

  50. McWars says:

I wonder if this is what Tanq. has trouble interpreting

Rush Limbaugh Signs $400 Million Deal, Set to Purchase G550 Jet

    Underline ‘Purchase.’

Limbaugh said with his new contract, he is purchasing a brand-new Gulfstream G550 jet. The Gulfstream G550 is the longest range business jet in the world and costs between $45-70 million.

  54. EugeneDebs says:

Good job McWars, so then Gumm isnt a liar, Tank is just a garden variety imbecile

  55. pbg says:

Once again, Rush tries to reframe the issue, only this time it really is absurd.
The problem facing Americans is not that the eeevil libruls are trying to clamp down on consumption. There’s plenty of gas out there–people just can’t afford it

This is nearly exactly Rush saying “Let them eat cake.”

The problem is not energy and hasn’t been: the problem is fossil fuels–both in global warrming and in this crisis. Al Gore has this big house and uses all this energy–and that’s perfectly OK, as long as that energy isn’t derived from fossil fuels. Ctank up the windmill and leave all the lights on!

Humanity uses so little of the Earth’s energy budget it isn’t worth talking about–about .1%, iirc. The problem is dirty energy–and monopolistic energy. What America needs is energy that isn’t under the control of a bunch of speculators, and also energy that doesn’t raise greenhouse gases. THAT kind of energy is a good idea to cut down on–and Rush ,ocks it.

Another way of Rephrasing Rush’s argument: “Michael Phelps uses 12,000 calories a day! So come on, don’t be shy! Dig into that can of lard! Use both hands!”

  56. pete says:

It seems as though the Reichwingers, in their growing desperation, are pulling out all the stops to ensure only the most loyal, brain dead, drones remain affiliated with the GOP.

Their platform should be, “Reckless radicals only! Rational people need not apply”.

  57. misshusseinmolly says:

This goes beyond comparing apples and oranges — this is more like comparing apples and oil rigs.

In the first place, Michael Phelps isn’t consuming a finite non-renewable resource. He can devour 12,000 calories a day without having an adverse effect on the world food supply. Second, unless Phelps has a MAJOR flatulence problem, burning off all those calories doesn’t contribute to global warming or have any other measurable negative effect on the planet.

If food was in such short supply that it would be a hardship to feed Phelps, and if Phelps couldn’t win gold medals without 12,000 calories a day, I would probably be the first to suggest that the medals wouldn’t be worth it.

Now for the other side — Limbaugh seems to think (or is trying to convince us) that the more energy we consume, the more excellent we will be. I fail to understand how driving gas guzzlers and consuming more energy than we need to allows us to achieve more or be more productive. It seems to me that it just makes us more wasteful.

  58. Bozo The Neoclown says:

    misshusseinmolly Says:
“Limbaugh seems to think (or is trying to convince us) that the more energy we consume, the more excellent we will be.”

yeah, just look at his average listener, they’re something special to behold

Limbaugh is a dolt. Pure & simple – a dolt.

  64. Zooey says:

Limbaugh wonders why he looks like a damn dirigible after consuming 12,000 calories a day, while Phelps consumes the same, and looks so frickin’ studly.

Methinks blubber butt is back on the pills…

  65. nanlichi says:

Limpballs is the fat maggot queen bee and the trolls are his sexless mindless drones. Rush lifts his fat leg and squeezes out an oily pheremone cloud and Dribbledick and Tanqueray come rushing to defend their queen.

    You sycophant twats are pathetic.

    No, really. You are pathetic.

  66. sectionop92 says:

Two things we should be looking for in the coming weeks and months from Rush and his listeners:

    1. The return of the “U.N. is out to conquer the U.S.A.” and videos showing up on cable access channels of these people sitting outside military bases here in the U.S. cataloging European vehicles and the paranoia of why they’re here. Notice I said “cable access channels”, because the right wingnuts aren’t very good at the YouTube process, due to their cavemen mentality and technological retardation.

    2. When Obama wins the presidency & the Democrats take full and clear control of Congress, the return of “The Nation Held Hostage Day #” countdown clock. You know Rush will be pissed, as he’ll have basically only piss and vinegar to fuel his shows since his best buds will be put into a basic forced retirement.

  67. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Geez… this one is incredibly stupid, dishonest, and down right silly, even by Limberger’s standards.

  68. Max-1 says:

  69. Marie says:

Maybe we could drill Limbaugh ( like Rep. Sali) and refine his a$$ — he’s a pretty solid block of lard.

  70. Another Joe says:

Marie – the only thing worse than the foul stench of anything refined from limpball’s blubber would be the caustic and poisonous pollution that would surely result from burning said “fuel”.

Please, we would all be better off giving up our cars; computers; and high-tech, energy dependent lifestyles – returning to the stone age.

Just watch HERE for what happens when you drink the kool-aid

  72. Fred says:

No it’s not. Only the win at any cost crowd…ie the republicans think like that.

Sports in America is decadent at best and destructive to not only our society in general but our children specifically.

result: bullying in schools resuling in columbine ect.

  73. Fred says:

    Another Joe Says:
Please, we would all be better off giving up our cars; computers; and high-tech, energy dependent lifestyles – returning to the stone age.

Lack the ability to think for yourself?

You and your conservative masters seem determined to take us back to the stone ages. FDR once said a conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs that refuses to walk forward, you seem to fit the mold very nicely.

  74. ForTruth says:

If there is a justification in expending that much energy, as in Phelps, sure it’s a good idea. However, the average lazy American doesn’t need to consume that much. No connection seen Mr. Limbaugh.

  75. 1984 says:

Well, in the long run 12k calories / day is not healthy either.

  76. DRxJ says:

Okay, a little too late to the party, but….

The reason that Phelps “devours” 12,000 calories a day is not because of the “me first” mentality. It’s because he has to out of necessity.
If he didn’t, he would wilt away and die.
    It’s simple basic physics.
You have to replenish what you burn.
His 7-12 hours a day vigorous workout at the pool utilizes way too much calories (something Oxybreath knows nothing about).

Congrats to Phelps for being possibly the best Olympic athlete, ever.

Congrats to Oxybreath for being possibly the biggest racist dope in the history of talk radio.

  77. wwew says:

hey anyone notice gas prices have gone down 50 cents in the last 30 or so days? and we didnt drill anything, we stopped consuming as much. that and they world is heading into a recession…

  78. cjmartinez says:

What does eating 12 pancakes have to do with burning 25% of the world’s oil?

    X=Y, therefore Z=Y.

Besides, Rush consumes more than anyone and he can’t get his fat ass to the gym or say something logical, much less swim a lap.

  79. ACME_Democrat says:

  80. meh says:

Limbaugh was being facetious, while at the same time trying to point out that true greatness has the price of high energy consumption. In one case, you have Phelps, consuming high energy and achieving greatness, and in the second scenario, you have the USA consuming high quantities of energy and also achieving greatness.
