Rep. Bill Sali (R-ID), who is participating in the GOP’s ongoing “Drill Now” energy stunt, has a unique idea about how to bring down gas prices: extracting oil from trees. In a meeting in his Capitol Hill office, Sali reportedly told a candidate for Idaho’s House of Representatives, Byron Yankey, that there “‘could be up to 40 barrels of oil‘ in a single tree.” Yankey wrote on his campaign blog:
Congressman Sali informed us that a solution to the high price of gasoline was to make petroleum from “all those trees in our forests.” … He continued by saying there “could be up to 40 barrels of oil” in a single tree.
Sali made a similar comment in 2006:
“Forty percent of the mass of every tree in the forest is crude oil,” he said. Going after that, he said, “could put Idaho in the oil business for the first time.”
Sali is apparently confusing cellulosic ethanol with oil, so let’s review the differences for the representative:
– Cellulosic ethanol is a renewable fuel “derived from the stalks and stems of plants.” Sali voted against cellulosic ethanol tax credits.
– Oil is a nonrenewable fuel found in the ground. Sali received $35,000 in campaign contributions from oil and gas companies since January 2007.
Sali is prone to making outlandish statements. Last summer, he claimed that religious diversity in Congress was not “envisioned by the Founding Fathers.”
Stupid. Knowing the lack of concern for the environment and renewable resources, these Republicans would cut down all our trees. Don't be giving stupid people more stupid ideas, stupid.

August 14th, 2008 at 4:32 pmWell, it's an established fact that trees cause pollution, so it's not too far a stretch to infer they must have oil in 'em.
God Zooey, what loggers' camp was this guy sired in?

Where has this fool been? Senator Craig from Idaho has been in the drilling business all over the Country for years.

August 14th, 2008 at 5:03 pmRep. Sali: There ‘Could Be Up To Forty Barrels Of Oil In A Single Tree’
- - Uh huh. And how many tires are there in a rubber plant?
August 14th, 2008 at 5:06 pmNo need to waste time with those fancy, expensive off-shore deep-water oil exploration drilling rigs, we can just drill sideways in our forest trees and extract the sap and burn it in our cars... No problemo... In New England, we can drill those sugar maple trees, extract the sweet sap, and, why heck, just pour it into your gas tank. Fuel up right there, in the middle of the forest in early spring... No problemo...
It should be quite evident that from these ignorant remarks made by Rep. Bill Sali (R-ID), that he never studied science or engineering in college. Probably he was a business major... That's where all the bullies and frat boys hung out when I was studying physics and then engineering back long ago. Have things changed?

The lack of equivalence ought to be obvious to anyone with half a brain. Getting the numbers wrong on oil consumption vs. thinking that trees produce oil? Your knee jerk ass-kissing is ludicrous.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:10 pmWell if trees have 40 barrels of oil in them, gotta wonder how many more barrels of oil are in this congress-idiot's @ss.
And if there are not actually tons and tons of oil in there, certainly there is enough natural gas to provide energy for a modest-sized city.
And certainly he is full of enough hot air to power many, many windmills.
On a more serious note - attended many renewable forestry conferences where it was announced that trees would be our best source of ethanol - unlike corn and other agriculture products, actually produces more energy than used.
I have heard the same about hemp - corn for ethanol is a net energy user, but our politicians are too subservient to corporate agriculture to admit it.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:11 pm40 barrels of oil in a tree
40 barrels of oil
Take one down, pass it around
39 barrels of oil
39 barrels of oil in a tree
39 barrels of oil
Boys, these Republicans sure sing out of the same hymnal, The Book of Big Oil
August 14th, 2008 at 5:15 pmOh - and properly managed forests are a RENEWABLE resources. Perhaps more importantly, converting trees to ethanol would provide a market for trees that are currently part of harvests but are not suitable to use for lumber.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:16 pmHey, wait!
Wasn't the democratically elected *cough* leadership of Iraq supposed to be working out deals with the United States to provide us with oil?
I'm almost positive that we would get more oil from a tree than we've gotten from Iraq since we invaded... um... liberated them.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:16 pmWhat a maroon!
August 14th, 2008 at 5:16 pmFor you math wizards:
(1)Given the oil consumption per day in barrels of the US alone.
(2)Dividing the number of barrels consumed per day by 40 gives the number of trees required.
(3)Multiplying that number by 365 gives the number of trees required per year.
(4)Assuming the growth factor of the oil producing tree to be between 50 and 100 years and multiplying the number of trees required per year by that range gives the number of trees growing at any point in time to sustain the demand.
(5)Assuming each tree requires 1000 sq ft to reach maturity if we divide 5280 X 5280 (Sq ft per sq mile) by the number in (4)we get the number of trees that can be sustained in one square mile.
Using the formula for the area of a sphere Pie are cubed and assuming the are of the earth in 4000 miles and dividing that number by (5) above we find that the frickin trees are planted three deep everywhere.
I guess we will all be living in the trees just like the ancestors of the Repukes (My apologies to the apes!)
August 14th, 2008 at 5:16 pmMy name is Sali:"And I can assure you now that you do not need to go to the gas pump station anymore in the near future..just plant few trees in your backyard, and at 40 barrles of oil a tree , you are set.

You have to feel sorry for the trolls if this is all they have. I'm tempted to take pity on dennis and just leave him to his delusions. Because no sane person is going to equate Obama's oil production claims and Sali's fantasy science, there's really no point in debating him.
Furthermore, given that there's no guarantee any actual drilling will occur even if oil companies get the leases they want, Obama may not have overstated at all.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:23 pmStay OT den.
Since when do consumers drill for oil? I guess you would lose your last braincell if you admitted Sen. Obama was suggesting different methods to save gas. You never make any sense, then again repugs never do.

This is a very odd statement. I'm not sure why you are comparing Darwin and Jesus...doesn't compute. Secondly, no "meek" has inherited government (by the way, the scripture is "and the meek shall inherit the earth.) What is your understanding of "meek?"
August 14th, 2008 at 6:13 pmHave you ever seen the Jesus and Darwin car insignias? That's what I'm getting at. And by my "meek", I mean the GOP showing more that they have the mental capacity of someone who can't understand larger practicalities, which would put them on the lower rungs of the ladder. August 14th, 2008 at 8:23 pmMy youngest son was a camera man at the public television station in Coeur d'Alene for a semester, back when Sali was running for Representative.
Zoo Jr said Sali arrived with an entourage, which included his own makeup artist, and they were all rude to everyone in the studio.
The host was interviewing Sali and his opponent, but Sali is so f ucking obnoxious that he couldn't interview the two candidates together, or Sali would just start his shouting down and apeshit insane poo throwing -- so he interviewed them separately.
The opponent (whose name I can't remember right now) was a smart guy, and interviewed very well. Sali was next, and Zoo Jr said he could barely string a sentence together or form a complete thought. Zoo Jr was a college freshman at the time.
After the interviews, the whole crew lined up to shake the guests' hands, and Zoo Jr had a plan. Zoo Jr shook Sali's hand, and proceeded to hold on, shaking the hand while asking Sali a few more questions -- which Sali stumbled through. Then Zoo Jr leaned in close and said, "You know, you really smell nice."
Sali snatched his hand away from Zoo Jr, and practically ran from the building.
I love that Zoo Jr. :-D
