McCain falsely takes credit for ‘creating’ Do Not Call list.

This week, 16 months into his campaign, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) released his first policy paper on technology. Over at the Wonk Room, former Clinton administration privacy counselor Peter Swire notes that the paper gives McCain credit for “creating” the “Do Not Call” list. But the Federal Trade Commission chairman announced the list two years earlier:

McCAIN: 2003 – McCain led in creating the FTC’s ‘Do-Not-Call’ telemarketing registry to allow consumers to opt out of receiving telemarketing calls. And, when the law was challenged in court, McCain led the effort to ensure that it was upheld.

REALITY: FTC Chairman Tim Muris announced in October 2001 that the FTC was going to do the Do Not Call list. Yet somehow McCain magically caused the Do Not Call list in 2003. And, given the independent agency status of the FTC, it is a stretch to say that ‘McCain led the effort to ensure that it was upheld.

The paper also says that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act “became law in 2000.” In fact, the law was enacted in 1998.

Digg It!

The McAncient? Claiming he invented the No-Call List?

    No one could have predicted!

    Somebody, quick, text Al Gore!

  2. Uncle Ho says:

    McPutz is wrong again!

It was the Russians who created the ‘no-call’ list.

    snark

  3. 5th Estate says:

Well then, I guess I should call McCain and tell him how crappy the Do Not Call List really is.

  4. Crusty Old Bastard says:

There is one thing about senility that becomes more obvious as the disease progresses. Not only does the memory fail to recall reality it begins to recall creative memories. Soon he will be claiming he introduced a bill to ban camels from the ark but Noah did a signing statement. Noah did make one mistake: he should have allowed only the front half of the horses aboard. It sure would have solved our political overpopulation problem in DC.

  5. unbelievable says:

What’s next – John McCain signed the Declaration of Indepndence, which he also co-authored?

  6. Fan of Man says:

the do not call list im on is BROKE! another fine waste of money brought to you by republicans.

5th, it is not the list that is crappy but the crappy list of crappy bushco sycophants that refuse to enforce the rules of the list for their crappy corporate buddies.

It has more loopholes for corporations than the US tax code.

I bet I still get 5 to 10 unwanted calls per day.

  9. Another Joe says:

Does anyone expect truth from the criminal cabal that promoted an AWOL alcoholic/cocaine addict as a “war president”?

They stole 2 federal elections, so don’t expect them to get honest now.

The scary thing is, mccain is such a lame candidate, it is hard to believe the repugs actually expect to win an election. Do they plan on stealing it or do they have a vested interest in getting obama elected.

Option 2 opens an entire set of interesting questions, none of which bode well for the future of US democracy.

I reported a comapny who called me, and discovered that in order for action to be brought against violators there has to be some insane number of reports of infraction, after which, they may or may not decide to investiate based on some random set of sampling ideology.

Essentially, it was typical Bush legacy – pretend to do something, but keep your fingers crossed behind your back the whole time because there’s no way the slaves are getting Sundays off when there’s all that cooton the corporations ned to get picked.

The Luddite McCain? Pffft, everyone knows Al Gore created the Do-Not-Call Registry..

Grampy McSame says – My friends back in the day we used to get calls all day and all night, those drums would never stop, BAM BAM BAM…BAM BAM IRAN, 24/7, now I prefer rocks myself, banging them together or just throwing them, when you throw a rock you are sure to get someone’s attention, so I got tired of all the drumming day and night and especially during dinner time, it’s hard to start fires enough and get the coals glowing without those pesky drums, so I decided, that’s right, I DECIDED that the drums during dinner needed to stop, so I sent out Cindy to dance Topless while drugged up on those little pills she borrowed and sure enough the drums stopped, and it was all because of me, the POW guy, you know “Songbird” McSame…I like pork and beans in my pants.

You can take credit for the Georgia Conflict while you’re at it, nimrod.

  13. konchster says:

Americans need to be very very scared that this BUFFOON might get elected. His grip on reality is tenuous at best

  14. Bobwurst says:

If anyones asks mccain about this, he’ll deny he said it, then mutter about how he’s prone to hyperbole, and the russians tortured him in world war elevnty when he was a starship captain, and the msm will call him a maverick.

  15. 5th Estate says:

    Vrusty and UNB…

Yes you are both right on the lack of enforcement, or rather the loopholes. I have been getting robo-calls from “Credit Services” for a year now which I happen to know is based in Maine. They use a telemarketing shop to field live responses and they of course are just a bunch of minimum-wagers who are just trying to earn a buck in this lousy economy. The “press 2 to be removed from our call-list” is complete bollocks.

  16. drago says:

McCain is so old that he also helped invent the railroads!

    Vote Smart in ‘08.

  17. RandomChaos says:

Hmmm, I added all my Landlines and Cell numbers to the list and the unsolicited calls dropped dramatically.
Used to get 2-3 a day, now I am lucky if I get a couple a month. You all need to remember that there is a loophole. If you have done business with the calling company, they are allowed to call you. If they do, just tell them you are on the DoNotCall list, and do not call anymore.
Also, whenever a retailer ask for my phone number, I tell them it is none of thier business. If you give out your number to any yahoo company or retailer you’ve opened the door for them and thier “partners”.
I look at it like this.. Guard your phone numbers like you would any other personal info i.e.. SS# CC# PIN#

    Cheers

    The Do-Not-Call list?

No. I think McNumbNuts was thinking of his campaign manifesto — more commonly known as the “I Do-Not-Recall” list.

  19. unbelievable says:

5th Estate Says: The “press 2 to be removed from our call-list” is complete bollocks.

I’ve NEVER heard anyone support telemarketing, however, if theses companies persist in doing it, it must be working. I don’t even pick up there calls. I wanna know who does? And why.

  20. cavjam says:

Whether it’s McCain, Corsi, or any of the myriad corporate neocon shills – they treat the truth as though it were quantum physics: aside from a few “elitists,” nobody knows or cares about it.

  21. unbelievable says:

RandomChaos Says: Also, whenever a retailer ask for my phone number, I tell them it is none of thier business.

I don’t give out my phone number – my former credit card company did, prior to having sent me the ‘opt out’ paperwork, which was another frustrating process that shouldn’t have been.

  22. Zimzone says:

    Same Shit Different Day McCain.

Repetition, Redundancy, Regurgitate, Rinse, Repeat, Replay.

  23. ScaryBrownHusseinChick (ThinkOutsideTheBush) says:

He’s confused, it was actually the “Do Not Think” list.

  24. hussein toasterhead says:

Of course, when McCain first proposed the idea it was known as the Do Not Pony Express List, but still…

  25. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Honest to God, he sounds like O’Reilly, who once claimed that his encouragement of a boycott against French products cost France “billions of dollars.” But I’m quite sure it won’t be long before we hear from the trolls that Gore claimed to have invented the Internet. The only difference is that O’Reilly’s claim actually happened and the Gore “claim” was a complete and utter fabrication by the Right.

  26. bluefish says:

I’m just impressed that he didn’t call it the “Do Not Telegraph” list.

  27. DRxJ says:

Remember how the right ridiculed Al Gore for “inventing” the Internet?
Remember how it was a continuous joke that was constantly rammed down our throat to descredit the then Vice-President?

Shall the left use the same tactic?

    Nahh, probably not.
But, gawd help me, I hope someone from this so-called Librul Media is paying fcking attention!!!!

  28. MapleStreet says:

Its not just the national level. Here in Missouri, our good repubs (who are Bushies through and through)have repubs claiming to have invented the Missouri DNC list

  29. YouCantHandleDaTruth says:

The que cards were good for McSame….kept him from soundin stupid.

  30. ThomasMc says:

Next, he’ll probably claim he invented the telephone.
