McCain: ‘I Have Not Missed Any Crucial Vote’ On Energy Legislation

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) currently holds the title of most absent U.S. senator, missing over 60 percent of votes this session. In an interview with Walter Isaacson at the Aspen Institute yesterday, McCain claimed he has not “missed any crucial vote” on energy legislation:

McCAIN: I have a long record of that support of alternate energy. … I’ve always been for all of those and I have not missed any crucial vote. But my citizens in Arizona know that when I’m running for the President of the United States I have to be out campaigning.

Watch it (via Progressive Accountability):

McCain’s has actually missed several “crucial” energy votes. In July alone, he missed every single energy vote brought to the floor. This session, McCain has skipped votes supporting renewable energy tax credits four times, all of which were filibustered. In June, for example, McCain missed a vote on the landmark Lieberman-Warner climate change legislation.

McCain has also been the “crucial” absent vote on key legislation. In December, legislation stripping tax break giveaways to Big Oil and investing in cleaner sources failed by one vote, 59-40 (Vote #425); McCain missed that vote to campaign. In February, McCain skipped a vote on extending tax credits to renewables, which also failed by one vote (Vote #8). Both times, McCain was the only senator absent.

“It’s interesting to hear Sen. McCain talk about bringing Congress back” for a vote on offshore drilling, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said this week. “He wasn’t even in Congress when we had two very important bills on energy.”

Update Tom Friedman: "John McCain has a perfect record on this renewable energy legislation. He has missed all eight votes over the last year — which effectively counts as a no vote each time. Once, he was even in the Senate and wouldn’t leave his office to vote." (HT: SilentPatriot)

Don’t blame Johnny Boy, as they weren’t ‘crucial’ to him. Either that or he just forgot where his seat in the Senate was.

It’s that CRS disease raising its ugly head.

  2. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Ok, it’s time to make that into a commercial. Show Nancy Pelosi saying her part, then show McCains response, then list all the votes he has missed.

We have to keep on top of this and refute every lie they tell. It’s too bad this has to be done on the Democratic party’s dime, when it should really be done by the MSM. I believe it IS news when a candidate for President tells a blatant lie.

    Well, this is easy.

The first vote, he didn’t want to go on record supporting giveaways to Big Oil because **POOF** their campaign contributions would’ve turned out to be less.

The second vote, he doesn’t support alternative energy whole-heartedly and is in bed with Big Oil…

    simple.

  4. tom says:

McNumbNuts’ absence from the Senate and his record of missing votes raises an interesting question. He wants voters to elect him because of his “record”; however, at least for the past four or five months, he has virtually no record.

Seems like a contradiction wrapped up in an enigma to me. What am I missing here?

  5. thepoliticalplace says:

This article really shows how MCcain really feels about alternative energy. Please remember this come vote time. Talk more about Mccain at http://www.thepoliticalplace.com

  6. Tweedster says:

Hahaha, the first one I confused…it was THAT easy.

McCain didn’t want to go on record supporting giveaways to Big Oil by voting NO because that wouldn’t play well with his non-BigOil constituents, and he didn’t want to piss of BigOil by voting YEA because he’s in their pocket.

    Whew.

Is it just me or has there been a complete lack of troll effort here today? Are they on a 4 day work week now?

  9. Zooey says:

Grampy: My friends, I have not missed any crucial votes on energy legislation, I’ve missed ALL crucial votes on energy legislation. There is a difference, you little jerk.

  10. vinylspear says:

OK, I’ll play the role of the troll.

I’m sick and tired of this website constantly bashing John McCain. Can’t someone say something positive about what he has done?

    Chirrrp…

If only the reporter — ANY reporter — would ask the follow up questions on Sen. McCain’s voting record.

. . . but then, that person would no longer be able to ride on the spiffy bus or plane and would never ever get any more yummy barbecue.

You couldn’t write this stuff any more absurdly than the media is playing to the conservative’s whims.

  13. Tweedster says:

That exactly it vinylspear…McCain is so off of the rails that even trolls are starting to feel embarassed by trying to cover a guy. ANytime a thread cannot conceivably be turned into a diatribe against Obama, the Clintons, Socialism, Gay “stuff” (Darryll), or racism in general they have NOTHING to say.

    It’s kind of refreshing.

Why would anyone believe mcchimpy’s word alone? He lies like his heartbeat.

I knew the old fart would latch onto the hit movie Momma Mia thus the Abba’s Dancing Queen song. he acts as if he made the movie a hit since he mentioned Abba. he stated some lame bs excuse about his music isn’t up to date since he was shot out of the air. (more self-accolades) What a opportunist. Abba hit was released in ‘74. Probably the year he ditched his wife.

The clip of him telling this lie is just spooky.

I will make sure on Election Day Sen. Obama is way ahead of mcchimpy.

  32. misshusseinmolly says:

McCain’s definitions of terms are a bit different from the norm. He doesn’t consider the GWOT to be an “international crisis” and he doesn’t consider bills on renewable energy tax credits to be “crucial”.

He won’t consider any energy bill crucial unless it’s to allow offshore drilling and he has to cast the deciding vote. Then he will enter the Senate with HUGE fanfare to whore himself to the oil companies.

  33. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Da mn old man McCain is confused. He can’t even count. He thinks he was in the Senate to vote when actually he was… where???

  34. sectionop92 says:

Yeah, go out and campaign and skip out on your CONSTITUTIONAL duties as a Senator to begin practicing what you’d inherently do as President J. McBush III. Does the RNC do any vetting on its candidates anymore or do they simply see which ones will stick to the wall at the end of the day?

It’s time for an honorable man like Chuck Hagel to KO this old fart in front of every registered Republican just for the sh!ts and giggles of it all.

  35. Helen Hussein Rainier says:

Is he truly this forgetful or what is it with him? His concept of what he thinks he has done and what the records show are so different that I’m very concerned.

He reminds me of the elderly parent who is still driving but shouldn’t be because he’s unaware that he’s become dangerous behind the wheel.

Someone needs to take away his car keys so he doesn’t hurt anyone, particularly himself.

That particular paragraph really jumped out at me. Maybe it’s old news to everyone else, but I hadn’t heard that before. Hmmm; wonder if this is telling us anything else? With all the recent speculation about whether John McCain is in bed with Big Oil, maybe missing that vote was on purpose?? I know, call me a pessimist, but you have to admit it’s very convenient to be the deciding vote for stripping tax breaks for Big Oil, but he misses the vote. Just wonderin’

And once again, if this is old news to everyone, then nevermind!

  37. dasm says:

Why would anyone want such a blatant liar as leader? He’s pathetic. Either that or he never remembers anything he’s said or done. Either way, certainly not ready to be president. Ever.

  38. Bozo The Neoclown says:

grampy mclame is a neoclown through and through. apparently, he decides which bill is “crucial”, the ones he missed are just fluff.

  39. celtic cynic says:

Maybe John-Boy thinks that his vote doesn’t count – like about 65% of Americans.

  40. celtic cynic says:

Take a good look at the video. The constant shifting of eyes and movement of the body tells the story. He’s lying, he’s lying, he’s lying! {and he knows it}.

There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC.
