Speaking at the Aspen Institute in Colorado yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that recent Russian aggression in Georgia is the “first…serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War.” McCain seemingly ignored the Gulf War, 9/11, and the Iraq War, to name a few:
My friends, we have reached a crisis, the first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War. This is an act of aggression.
Watch it:
In July, McCain said Iraq was the “first major conflict since 9/11,” leaving out Afghanistan. Matt Yglesias has more on McCain’s inflated rhetoric on Russia. (HT: Politico)
With the help of Viagra, I’ll bet McNumbNuts could even get a woody over the prospects of this “serious international conflict”. It’s what republican’ts do.

August 15th, 2008 at 10:00 amAgain, McCain shows that he is “confused”. He already forgot about our illegal invasion into Iraq. His brain must be fried.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:04 amMy friends, dementia is on the march.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:04 amGuido, I agree. McCain is clueless.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:05 amThe “cold” war (it wasn’t really cold if we were fighting Russia by proxy – through Osama bin Laden and his troops) ended in 1989.
Nohing significant has happened since then internationally? Really?
I suppose from his prespective, that could be true. However, a lot of people around the world from Bosnia to Iraq to New York to the Sudan to South Africa to North Korea and so on might disagree.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:08 amIn retrospect, it was probably a good idea for Obama to go to Hawaii for a week. Sometimes, the most effective thing to do when you’re running against a complete imbecile is get out of the way and let them hang themselves.
McNumbNuts is well on the way to self-destructing. Throw in a couple temper tantrums, a few revelations about his seedy lobbyist ties, bring up his illustrious past (Keating 5; children who won’t talk to him; cheating on his first wife; collaboration with his captors in Vietnam) and laughable performances in debates and viola — a republican’t debacle in November.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:09 amThe Democrats have to stop dancing around the issue of McCain’s age. He’s an old guy whose brain isn’t working well and it isn’t going to get any better. His age and memory lapses are a legitmate issue.
August 15th, 2008 at 10:10 amHad a spelling lapse. The word is legitimate.

August 15th, 2008 at 10:15 amDear John,
I am not your friend. It is presumptuous and pretentious of you to refer to someone you have no knowledge of, as your friend.
I can safely assume that if we were to meet in real life, you would not like me. You would brand me as a “Liberal” when in reality, I only wish for the same rights granted in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution be applied fairly to all, not just those that drink the republican Kool-aid or give money to your campaign. You are duplicitous and two faced, shallow, and lacking moral fiber. Your reference to everyone as a “friend” is pandering to the lowest level and I hope it bites you in the ass.
Sincerely,

August 15th, 2008 at 10:19 amSo the 1000s of dead Americans, and huibdreds of thousands of dead Iraqs mean nothing whatsoever to McCain. It’s not even a serious crisis to him.

I do think it sucks that two of the three debates will have the candidates sitting down, because Obama’s towering stature, coupled with his superior use of facts and ideas, would be beautiful to behold.
And agreed that the troops who lost their lives or were permanently disabled in Iraq and Afganistan did so for a “minor” incident. Way to acknowledge the sacrifices, McStain!

August 15th, 2008 at 10:28 amSo the tens of millions of people who have died in the ongoing Rwanda/Democratic Republic of the Congo conflict don’t count, I guess?
No, probly not.

Only the most obtuse of his followers could buy what he says about this being the first serious international crisis since the end of the Cold War, or his condemnation of invading or “bullying” other countries.
But by all means, keep it up, John. You’ll eventually cross the finish line hopping on one foot with the other one firmly planted in your mouth — only to find that Obama left you in the dust.

The Daily Show has been having a lot of fun this week with the Bush/McCain administration’s verbal gymnastics every time they make their “sovereign nations don’t invade other sovereign nations in the 21st century” talking point. They usually qualify it with “in Europe” or “that are functioning democracies” or “in bed” to avoid the obvious comparison to Iraq. Or not. Sometimes they just press on as if we have no long-term memory or old newspapers.

Over my lifetime, I have seen some people wind up in the Oval Office whom I never wanted. I consoled myself with the thought that the United States was actually quite strong, and as long as we still had our constitution, the president couldn’t screw it up too badly — no matter what happened, we would survive and recover. Like a pine tree in a severe drought, it would bounce back once the drought ended.
The last eight years have caused me to doubt this, however. I have seen a consolidation of power in the Executive Branch that made Nixon’s power grab pale in comparison. I am watching the constitution — the backbone of our democracy — get shredded. I have seen our entire system of government checks and balances completely erode. I have seen our national debt skyrocket to heights that we couldn’t have imagined a generation ago and our dollar descend into laughable territory. I am watching our government being run by oil companies, Halliburton, KBR, and Blackwater as they see fit. And all without any accountability.
I have seen the respect we once commanded in the world plummet down to utter scorn. And I am watching our military — the best and most powerful in the world — strained to the breaking point.
I watch as the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle class gets smaller.
Where I used to think the United States was strong enough to endure anything, even a bad chief executive, I can now see some limits to this strength. For the health of our country, we MUST change course in November. Four more years down the same track may just finish us.
August 15th, 2008 at 11:05 amMcNumbNuts is showing what kind of presi-dunce he would be — just like GDumbya. Anther comatose, bellicose buffoon.
August 15th, 2008 at 11:07 amNow that I’ve parsed his statement, “probably serious crisis internationally,” I see where the qualifier lies. It’s the word “probably.” McCain is, of course, referring to quantum conflict, which is the logical successor to the old theory of Newtonian conflict.
While Newtonian law states that conflict is inevitable, quantum conflict theory assigns a probability distribution to the possibilities of an escalation of conflict. This theoretical warfare exists as a series of eigenstates that, due to the Uncertainty Principle, can’t be known until the waveform actually collapses.
Iraq, Afghanistan, DR Congo, Lebanon, Chad, Sudan – these are all collapsed-waveform conflicts. We know the forms they take. But Russia-Georgia, Colombia-Venezuela, India-Pakistan, China-East Turkestan, Israel-Iran – these are all merely quantum wars.
For now.
August 15th, 2008 at 11:07 amThe fact that the US has invaded a country with nothing to do with 911 and in the persian gulf which the neo con’s had advocated in writing invading, inorder to control Russia and China ,I quess there is no chance this is neo con’s last back door attempt to WWIII .
August 15th, 2008 at 11:09 amWithin the last month a massive joint training exercize with the georgian army and 1000 US soldiers took place which was proceeded by an official visit by Condi rice.
The US has been placing a missle shield around Russia which is of course as unprovocative as say China’s placing a missle shield on our borders in Canada and Mexico .
Maybe a one two punch ,say Israel attacks Iran unprovoked and the US goes to war with the Russians ! Good God are these guys for real !!!!!!!!!

Russia will not sit quietly while the US sets up on their doorstep. Not only that, the US will have a “buffer” between Russia and the Middle East. It’s real life Risk.

________
While I certainly share your concern about the increasing corporatization of the government, I’m not sure that this is all entirely new.
Remember – as far back as the 1950s, our government was leading coups, overthrowing elected governments, and sparking massive civil wars in countries for the benefit of companies like British Petroleum and United Fruit. Completely without accountability or Congressional oversight. It was also conducting experiments with syphilis on black people and testing the effects of shock therapy at mental institutions, again without authorization. Checks and balances had been sacrificed in the name of Cold War hysteria.
I think the only real difference between then and now is that we’re able to see more clearly and more quickly what’s happening – not just here, but around the world. Yes, the government may try to be more secretive, but there are some pretty tenacious and courageous people shedding sunlight on whats happening as well.
I’m cautiously optimistic that we can change what’s happening to our country and our government, though I firmly believe that we can’t rely on the White House to do it for us. Nothing will improve until we change the anything-for-profit philosophy of the companies that actually run this country.
August 15th, 2008 at 11:22 amMsM’s response? “…what?!?!!? We can’t cover John McCain…Obama walked bare footed on a beach dammit!!!….”
August 15th, 2008 at 11:23 amThis kind of myopic arrogance is why so many around the world despise us. I suppose the war in the Balkans never happened. McCain himself knows full well how silly the statement is, but Rove knows that many Americans don’t. It is the same feigned ignorance that riles the left, making them look unpatriotic and elitist if they counter-attack. This is Roves bread and butter . He turned a Harvard graduate into a bumbling redneck, after all.

Yikes.
August 15th, 2008 at 11:29 amI don’t think that any qualifiers can help with that statement. Not only does he disregard 9/11, but also our response to 9/11 including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He disregards the conflict in Serbia and Kosovo which is still playing out. He disregards, as does the administration, what should be a crisis with Pakistan selling nuclear secrets to the highest bidder. He disregards ongoing conflicts surrounding Isreal.
McCain is trying to present himself as “presidential” by dealing with this “crisis”, but in reality he is just an armchair general who is puffing up his own importance.

August 15th, 2008 at 3:33 pmI think some Serbs, Bosnians and Croatians might take issue with Grandpa’s rhetoric. Then again, when you are pandering to a base which has about the same long-term memory of about ten minutes, most won’t take issue with it since they won’t remember it after the news stops mentioning it.
August 15th, 2008 at 4:31 pmWhat possible yardstick is McCain using?
Off the top of my head I can name Gulf War I, Bosnia, Lebannon/Palestine, Pakistan/India, Afghanistan and Iraq.
It seems as though McCain only consider conflict with Russia as an international crisis. I think those other countries would beg to differ.
August 15th, 2008 at 5:04 pm“Abskaya” is probably the first new name for a region recently discovered, my friends. And its leader Mr. “Shish ka vili” is currently hiding in the nearby State of Georgia which shares a border with Alabama. Where is my medication when I need it, my friends?

Unless you’re a country that adds to the McCain campaign piggy bank, you’re about as important as a substantial policy issue to him and his man diaper changers.
August 15th, 2008 at 5:23 pmthe first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War
August 15th, 2008 at 5:24 pmAre they serious???!!! Are they really serious??? I think they are joking with us… Statements like this are so out of reality, they MUST be KIDING!!!
.
So, the illegal invasion and continued occupation that NEVER was an imminent threat to America which has caused over 5 MILLION refugees, set the chain of events that caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands isn’t an international crisis? Especially when the leader of the country that initiated this unwarranted aggression actually convinced other international parties to join him.

August 15th, 2008 at 6:28 pmOh my. Well, Now Bush is saying that Russia is bullying and intimidating Georgia…as if Bush didn’t do that with Iraq…what a joke.
August 15th, 2008 at 6:32 pmOh! ….. Great!…… Now let the Arizona cowboy pull out his big guns and send our military into Russia. Please tell me why the European’s who are Georgia’s neighbors are not permitted to negotiate this matter? After all they have more to lose. Why does the USA always have to be in charge of all the world’s issues?
August 15th, 2008 at 7:27 pmIs John McCain in the pocket of oil companies? Is John McCain in the pocket of insurance companies? Is john McCain in the pocket of pharmaceutical companies? What countries is john McCain in the pocket of? Here is a list of lobbyists and employees of major companies working in major positions in the McCain campaign. It will answer any questions you might have about the people who are advising and influencing him.

Ops! here is that link
August 15th, 2008 at 7:32 pm@ Kwaayesnama: Very useful link there. I was just researching Exxon and found that McCain proposed giving them a $1.2 billion tax break. (And this year they’ve recorded the highest profits ever by any American corporation in history….).
As regards the Russia/Georgia conflict, I do wish the mainstream media would recognise the US’ role in helping Saakashvili to power, funding and training the Georgian military and sending 1000 US soldiers to Georgia for ‘war games’ in the weeks preceding the conflict.
The least they could do is make the proper distinctions between Georgia and South Ossetia. But, never mind, eh? :-)

January 10th, 2009 at 7:11 pmThis is another example that the “old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri

January 27th, 2009 at 11:44 amIf you’re referring to Karl Schwarz’ articles, if they are true, how will we ever know unless the news media gets involved without bias? The military under orders not to speak out may never convey Karl Scharz’ expose’. If Cheney was truly involved in 9/11 and protected in some way, then he’s being protected by what may be going on in the Caspian Sea area as well. That pre-9/11 August 10, 2000 article drives the point home to me that Cheney had a vested interest in the oil at the Caspian Sea area (before 9/11). From all I’ve read in Schwarz’ articles, he claims the Taliban was working on a deal with Argentina with that pipeline in the Caspian Sea area and UNOCOL wanted the deal instead. It’s too much to get into here and I’m not able to convey in here what Schwarz has presented in his articles. Dig into Schwarz’ articles to learn more about the unnamed soldier’s experiences related to so-called Black Ops missions in the Caspian Sea area in Schwarz’ article. What Schwarz had to present in this article is an eye opener: kurtlar vadisi pusu izle Sikis Orjinal Lida Fx15 Sesli Sohbet

I want suits in Colorado, New Jersey, and any other state where illegal suppression campaigns are being conducted. And some real looks at the polling methodology would also be eye opening.

As I’ve said before, Sarah Palin is the ENERGIZER Bunny that keeps going, and going, and irritatingly keeps going some more. She should go away for a while, and get her act together. Staying in people’s faces just makes people not what to listen to her or have anything to do with with
