Gingrich Claims Tire Inflation Lines Big Oil’s Pockets

Last night on Fox News, host Sean Hannity and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) returned (as they often do) to Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) recent suggestion that Americans inflate their tires properly in order to save energy costs.

Seeming to outdo his previous false attacks on this issue, Gingrich claimed that Obama’s idea is actually encouraging Americans to “enrich Big Oil” because selling air has “a higher profit margin than selling gasoline”:

GINGRICH: Well, I got a very funny e-mail from a retired military officer in Tampa who pointed out that most tire inflation is done at service stations and you pay for it. And it’s actually a higher profit margin than selling gasoline. So Sen. Obama was urging you to go out and enrich Big Oil by inflating your tires instead of buying gas.

Watch it:

This claim is absurd for a number of reasons. First, gas station owners, not Big Oil, receive the profits from selling air — if they sell air at all (presumably from mechanized air machines). Second, air is free. So of course the profit margin for selling air is going be higher than a gallon of gas. By contrast, the cost of oil accounts for a significant portion of the price of gasoline. So any profits from gasoline sales (which are actually quite small) also go to the gas station owners, after Big Oil has already been paid.

But beyond Gingrich’s ridiculous assertion, the Auto Alliance has noted that maintaining proper tire pressure is “more important than you may think” because it saves fuel and reduces costs and greenhouse gases.

Indeed, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) — whom Gingrich once praised as one of the “great winners” — agrees. Today he endorsed the thrust of Obama’s idea, saying “you can reduce your fuel costs by more than 15%. And I am talking about simple things, like proper tire pressure, avoiding rapid starts and stops, and keeping your engine tuned.”

Digg It!

Yeah, it is "funny" that you would believe such utter non-sense that has no factual basis.

  2. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Hannity will believe anything Newt tells him. Sad. Hey, Hannity, if Newt told you that men were genetically engineered to go out and hunt giraffes, and women were subject to "infections" every month, would you believe him? Because he said those things, too!

  4. larkohio Says:

Yep, I go to a gas station that charges for air. It is 25 cents. I do it about 4 times a year. So they make a HUGE profit from me. I am so tired of this junk.

  5. tokin librul Says:

Stuff a sock in Newties gob, and a rabid gerbil up his ass and be done w/that sick sack of crap.

What's the difference between Newtie and a 200-lb bucket of runny shit?

    The bucket...

  6. konchster Says:

Gingrich is so used to be. That old adulterer is a page from the past. I guess he feels if he can get on TV he may score some strange.

  7. RUCerious Says:

Now if we could just harness the hot air from windbags like Amphibian Boy and SHammity, we'd be off oil in weeks, not years.

  8. tokin librul Says:

The claim is false on the face of it.
Yes, gas stations now frequently charge for the energy necessary to run the compressor for the air pump.
But that revenue goes to the individual station operator, not "big Oil," as the dismal, droning, dickheaded, satchel-ass Newtie claims...

  9. vinylspear Says:

    That does it!!!
    I call shenanigans.

  10. spencers mom Says:

On topic, all I can say is idiots.

Slightly off topic, we have on the Mythbusters marathon on Discovery last night, and they did an experiment on whether driving angry or stressed affected gas mileage.

The results were stunning - driving angry/stressed increased gas consumption by 45 - 50%! In both drivers!

Now there's an arguement against listening to talk radio in the car!

    PEACE

  11. raynman Says:

Notice how he made the attribution to some anonymous 'retired military officer' (you can just hear Hannity panting) rather than take credit for it himself?

    That's called plausible deniability.

When someone throws the BS Flag on this one, all Newt will have to say is that this anonymous guy was wrong, not me. The lie will still be out there, but Newt will have his deniability.

  12. upside99 Says:

I guess when Hannity only has a high school education, all that Gingrich 'intelligence' can cause a large case of Newter man-love, huh Sean?

  13. Leftside Annie Says:

    That's just plain bullcrap. Newt's a moron.

Here in CA, station owners are not allowed to charge you for either air or water if you buy gas.

If you don't buy gas, the charge is nominal, and would probably cover only the costs of operating the machine itself.

  14. shoeless Says:

So Sen. Obama was urging you to go out and enrich Big Oil by inflating your tires

Why does Newt Gingrich hate Big Oil?

  15. vinylspear Says:

Republican equivocative reasoning at its finest.

  16. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Newty has once again backed himself into a corner, because the reich-wingers are always on the side of big oil. So, why would he be upset even if this false claim was true?

  17. 5th Estate Says:

larkohio: Yep, I go to a gas station that charges for air. It is 25 cents. I do it about 4 times a year. So they make a HUGE profit from me. I am so tired of this junk.

    Can't take the pressure, huh?

You can all use that zinger if you want...free of charge.

  21. jgroene Says:

It is just so absurd how Hannity and Gingrich keep insisting making fun of the idea of keeping tires properly inflated and cars properly tuned up as a way of saving energy rather than just accepting the opinion of experts on the matter.

It should be noted that even Exxon-Mobil has placed ads in newspapers (I saw it in the NY Times last week) to tell consumers that proper tire inflation and tune-ups are a good way of significantly reducing the amount of energy consumed.

And I really doubt that it has anything to do with increasing air sales.

Gingrich's ass serves two purposes. It's not only his mouth piece it's his bibliography.

  33. upside99 Says:

Maybe the Newter is on the payroll of Big Tires. Since, in addition to saving fuel, proper inflation will double the life of your tires. And we sure wouldn't want that to happen, would not sell as many tires and create all that used tire waste either.

Also, it makes your car much safer and with fewer accidents, I guess the tow truckers would have less business, as well as the ambulances and the mortuarys and coffin makers. So it wold be bad for all those businesses, and so would be un-Amurrikan.

  36. margerine Says:

I can't tell you how many gas stations have free pumps for air. Some ask for a quarter.

You can buy your own devices for that as well. My parents got one for next to nothing at Sears.

You're not at the mercy of any big company there. Am I going to refine my own petroleum in my garage? What the heck is the comparison?

  37. GeeDubs Says:

When, oh when are people going to wake up and realize how absolutely stupid the Republicans have gotten over the course of the last eight years? They're trying to drag everybody down to their stupid level, and I guess saying stupid things like this is just another example of playing to the stupid so people will get more stupid and vote for the stupid idiots one more time. If that happens, we really ARE stupid, and would deserve John McCain and his stupid policies.

  39. GeeDubs Says:

Margerine, it has nothing to do with a comparison. It's a complete brain freeze moment. Astonishment that someone would say it with a straight face, and then that dull, cool feeling you get when these lies just lay there on your brain, seeping into your cerebral cortex, damaging your neurons until you drift into this foggy darkness, mouthing, 'Yes, Newt. Oh yes...you are so right. I'll go to the gas station and fill up my car, but DAMMIT! if I'm going to put air in my tires! Damn oil companies!'

Obama Infanticide Attack Being Readied By 527s, Pat Buchanan Says

    August 18, 2008 10:46 AM

A few weeks ago, the Huffington Post's Seth Colter Walls reported that Republican officials and outside groups were set to launch a smear campaign against Barack Obama, accusing the Senator of enabling infanticide.

The issue stems from a state version of the federal Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which proposed that any "viable" fetus surviving a late-term abortion receive sustaining medical care. Obama opposed the measure not because he disagreed with overarching purpose, but because of objectionable side-provisions such as a failure to immunize doctors from legal prosecution.

It was, Seth concluded, a ginned-up argument made more complicated by the fact the bill passed in 2005, "free of any other measures Obama had previously opposed."

And yet, the GOP seems hell bent on furthering the line of attack. In the minutes preceding Saturday's values forum with the presidential candidates, Pat Buchanan discussed Obama's alleged vulnerabilities on the issue of abortion before letting it slip that conservative groups were set to hit the Illinois Democrat on charges of infanticide.

Obama: Anti-Abortion Activists Lying About Me

    The Huffington Post | August 17, 2008 10:41 AM

CBN News' David Brody interviewed Barack Obama after Saturday night's Saddleback forum. He says:

It seems like Barack Obama's heated answer about The Born Alive Infant Protection Act is making some headlines out there ... Clearly, the conversation over this bill has gotten Obama riled up. He truly believes The National Life to Right Committee is lying about this controversial infanticide bill which he opposed. He is adamant in saying that the bill he opposed in the Illinois State Senate was NOT the same as the federal legislation that pro-choice Senators even voted for.

The Huffington Post previously reported on the effort to paint Obama as pro-infanticide:

Catholic voters should steel themselves to hear Barack Obama accused of "infanticide" this fall. Support for that heinous crime is the latest charge being cooked up against a Democratic nominee by the man who helped to paint John Kerry as unworthy of the communion wafer back in 2004.

Deal Hudson, who was compelled to resign from his role with the Republican National Committee after sordid details from his personal life were brought to light four years ago, now sits on John McCain's 80-person advisory board for Catholic issues. From that perch, he's begun launching the "infanticide" smear against Obama in niche media outlets like his own "Inside Catholic" website and talk radio host Al Kresta's program. ("Infanticide is becoming a touchy subject for Barack Obama," Hudson wrote matter-of-factly on his website in early July.)

  50. bluefish Says:

I wasn't watching Hannity's program last night as I had better things to do (picking lint out of belly button), but it's pretty disappointing to think that Sean's streak of saying the dumbest thing on his show each night may have ended. Congrats Newt!

  51. Bartolo Says:

Not only do we have a full-sized air compressor, but also one of those combo jumpstarter/compressor batteries, so that we never have to pay for air. Most folks living in the sticks are so prepared.

  52. Bozo The Neoclown Says:

Here in Connecticut, it's illegal for a gas station to operate and not to offer free air to their patrons. Then again, what do you expect in the liberal northeast?

  53. pete Says:

BTW. Will it ever dawn on these idiots that our energy crisis isn't caused by too much imported oil, or even too much consumption. The problem is that we waste too much energy. Period.

Less than one percent of the energy consumed by a mid-sized car goes to moving the occupants. The rest is, essentially, wasted on performance, heat, noise, friction and moving the mass of the car. We continue to burn off natural gas rather than building pipelines to transport it. We continue to use hideously inefficient incandescent lighting, And the list goes on, and on.

So long as morons like Newt are given a platform to befuddle the ignorant? We're screwed.

  54. Bozo The Neoclown Says:

What I'd like to know is this:

The average faux snooze "viewer" has four or five rusted out cars on conrete blocks outside of their doublewide. what do they know about tires, nevermind the proper inflation of them?

  55. pete Says:

If Faux were, as they claim, "fair and balanced"; wouldn't they occasionally talk to an expert in the field? You know, One of those PhD types who, according to Reichwing propaganda, are so smart that they get rich off of tax-funded research?

Oh! That's right. When government scientists disagree with the politics? They get edited. And I don't recall ever hearing about a legitimate scientist being invited on Faux.

  56. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Y'know what? I don't even care about restoring the Fairness Doctrine.

I'd be satisfied if the MSM installed a Doctrine that said anyone presented as a commentator or anlyst must at least care about whether they're telling the truth or not.

It's pretty clear that they don't even rise to that miniscule bar at the moment.

  57. Above the Clouds Says:

This is really rich: Hannity and Gingrich giving America an energy and ethics lecture.

  58. Bozo The Neoclown Says:

With all the hot air hannity and gingrich spew out, someone ought to shove an air hose in their mouths and charge 25 cents a whack to inflate tires. you could be a millionaire in a week.

  59. ucsbclassics53 Says:

One would think that Newt Gingrich would be in favor of anything that would line Big Oil's pocket, so this faux populism is nothing but bullshit.

even though his whole premise is false for the reasons stated above.

  60. nofltwlt Says:

Is it in the republican manifesto or something? Does it say in there, though must be a dickhead? These idiots are shameless.

Democrats/liberals are just plain better people than republicans/conservatives.

  61. House of Roberts Says:

The reason a properly inflated set of tires on a vehicle uses less fuel, is because the rolling resistance is reduced. The tires also wear better because the tread contacts the road as the designer of the tire intended. The tire also runs cooler, particularly at sustained highway speeds, and rubber gets softer as it heats up, and softer rubber wears faster.

  62. Laszlo Panaflex Says:

I know where all the free air is all along my route, and if I get desperate, my buddy has a compressor in his garage.

And shouldn't we be talking about how Newt has had affairs yet remains a prominent member of the right and how that reflects on the right?

  63. shoeless Says:

Republican morons will now be driving around on half deflated tires. This is an amazing example of how Republican propaganda artists are able to make their minions act against their own best self-interest. It's a little test to see how easy it is for them to lead their army of zombies around by the nose.

  64. tarazan Says:

Gingrich talking of air pumping:"...And it is a higher profit margin..".
    How silly that is !!

Mr. Gingrich : show me a gas station that can survive on pumping air?.
Pumping air is just a service to customers..and many stations where I live it is free.
Even if it wasn't free it is not a way to make a dollar to keep any station survive financially.

  65. Pete Tagliani Says:

The sad thing is that Newt is smart enough to know that it is an absurd bit of non-logic. But he also knows that Sean and his viewers will eat it up.

And the way he framed it as a "funny" suggestion from a "retired military officer".

Meaning; Don't take this idea seriously because it makes no sense. Ha ha! It's funny! But, on the other hand, it did come from a retired military officer. So take it very seriously because he knows what he's talking about.

  66. foolme1ns Says:

  67. RUCerious Says:

Don't you have a cancer ridden wife to divorce, Newt?

  68. Shayne Says:

So then if we put air in our tires the terrorists win?

Why do people who properly inflate their tires hate America?

I'm sure Senator McCain could give brilliant commentary on these issues that would take the heat off the Newt.

  69. celtic cynic Says:

And when was the last time the lard ass and the dumb ass checked their tire pressure or any other component of their super-duper, gas guzzling vehicles?

Don't they have 'illegals' to do that menial work?

  70. leftcoast Says:

Why should these two over inflated egos worry. These two windbags can supply enough air to keep all the tires of the eastern seaboard properly inflated for a lifetime.

  71. chiefeditor Says:

Does Newt Gingrich hear himself when he talks? Or does he not have to when he's on Fox News?

  72. kasinca Says:

Reichwingnut talking heads are not talking to the masses...they are talking to weak minded troglodytes.

  73. zuch Says:

Seeming to outdo his previous false attacks on this issue, Gingrich claimed that Obama’s idea is actually encouraging Americans to “enrich Big Oil” because selling air has “a higher profit margin than selling gasoline”....

In California, you are required by law to provide air for free to someone who fills up gas (for non-customers ... and bicyclists like me ... they can charge).

    Cheers,

  74. Zooey Says:

Newt is grasping at straws. How bad is it when you have to tell such a stupid lie?

I've never paid for air or water in Idaho. And if I ever do pay, I'm pretty sure the guy will just pocket the buck.

  75. curveballsenator Says:

Hey, Fox finds it profitable to inflate Gingrich. 'Nuff said.

  76. Doc Rock Says:

They only charge in Red States

  77. Zooey Says:

I think Hannity creams himself every time he hears Newtie's voice.

  78. Bad Eye Says:

Last week I had a brief conversation with an employee at a local mom-and-pop gas station. We were talking gas profit margins for the store when she said that the price of their gas includes a 4 cent profit for the owner. Not only that, she said that they also have to pay 2 cents out of the 4 cents of "profit" back to the oil company on top of what they pay for the gas in the first place.

  79. prius04 Says:

    Isn't Gingrich a serial adulterer?

I've always found it rather bizzare that if you commit adultery, but return to your wife, you're a pariah. (Edwards, Clinton)

But if you commit adultery and it ends in divorce, everything is just fine. (McCain, Gingrich, Ronald Reagan)

    Can anyone explain this?

(I know the answer already, the answer is IOKIYAR.)

  80. Johnsnottoodistracted Says:

How many times does this guy get to show the results of his .......This group seems to go round and round.Must not matter anymore what they say.Maybe it's the sound of their voices that gets they going.
Correct tire pressure is good for milage and tire wear too. Everyone knows that. This is not new science.Common sense.
Why would someone (or two or three) clowns in prime time decide this is news?
Or do they search for insanity? May be easier for them to discuss the meaningless. They have that all to themselves.
Still interesting what level of attention the viewers have to stay tuned to this.

  81. Max-1 Says:

    .

Hea, I learned how to inflate my own tires at self serve stations...

Or does (ins)Hanity and Newt suggest we drive on UNDER INFLATED TIRES?

    .

  82. Max-1 Says:

    .

But of course these circle jerkers only know how to stroke themselves and their egos.

Too bad the "FAIRLY IMBALANCED" propaganda station doesn't ask real probing questions... then we'd see these pigs squeal... NO?

    .

  83. SkippyFlipjack Says:

hey Ben -- you're generally right on, but one niggle. Yes, profits on a gallon of gas go to the gas station owners. But we're talking about reducing overall gas consumption, which *does* impact the source producers. If everyone in the country let out most of the air in their tires and gas consumption jumped as MPG fell, do you think only station owners would be reaping the rewards?

Also, I'm not sure about elsewhere in the country, but where I live air is usually free, and even the stations that charge for it will give it to you free if you buy some gas.

  84. CitizenX Says:

In California air is free when you buy gas. The stations are required to provide it at no cost. I usually means them giving you the quarter for the machine but it is no cost to you.

  85. rogmath Says:

It's a pretty trite dig by Gingrich, but the claim that air is free (to produce) is just as stupid. Plus, don't air compressors use oil?

  86. jimmorasson Says:

Thinkprogress.org says: "Indeed, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) — whom Gingrich once praised as one of the “great winners” — agrees. And I am talking about simple things, like proper tire pressure, avoiding rapid starts and stops, and keeping your engine tuned.”
    _________

Gee, how odd that you are using a statement from Schwarzenegger to bolster yours and Obama's case when LESS THAN 2 SHORT MONTHS AGO you were accusing the very same man (Schwarzenegger) of "SELLING OUT THE ENVIRONMENT" by taking huge contributions from "Big Oil"......So why should we listen to Schwarzenegger again? I don't get it, has he been bought by "Big Oil" or not?

QUESTION TO THINKPROGRESS.ORG: Do you all just make up this stuff as you go along or what? On the subject of "consistency", YOU GET A BIG FAT "F". 8-)

  87. kenmcfa Says:

You guys pay for air? Accross the pond here air is free at gas stations, and most people have a foot pump which works completely without any input from big oil whatsoever. Although it does take quite a lot of effort if your tyres are flat.

A lot of these stations are company owned, not franchised. These air compressors use electricity, and their built-in tire guages are not accurate. Try over-inflating your tires in hot weather and see what happens: faster tire wear, if not a blowout. Most people have their tire pressure checked anyway every time they get their oil changed or tires rotated, so there's not a high percentage of people driving around on under-inflated tires. The whole concept is a joke - Obama obviously doesn't know much about automobiles (like since the mid-80s cars don't get tuneups). Want to significantly reduce oil consumption? Get your oil changed every 5000-7500 miles instead of every 3000 miles, and use synthetic oil. Modern engines can easily go this long between oil changes unless they are run under unusually harsh conditions.

  89. bobzaguy Says:

It is just so absurd how Hannity and Gingrich keep insisting making fun of the idea of keeping tires properly inflated and cars properly tuned up as a way of saving energy rather than just accepting the opinion of experts on the matter.

I think it's called vamping in show business...nothing else to say to cover the time, make it to the end of the block of time with whatever you have to say or do. Obviously SH can't b**w NG on the air, so empty talk is required.

  90. LinuxLars Says:

How utterly ridiculous. The Republican machine has officially become a laughing stock. Now the big question is, is the American populace ignorant enough to re-elect them? If we do, we're doomed.

  91. BC Says:

Thus the right wing conservatives win by once again successfully dumbing down public discourse into absurdity.

Hey, numbnuts. There are still plenty of cars on the road that require a tune-up. The local garages must also be idiots because they continue to send out coupons offering special pricing on "tune-ups." Nevertheless, the word tune-up is still a general term used to define maintenance performed on engines that result in them running much more efficiently.

  94. darth Says:

Memo to Mr. Hannity & Gingrich RE: Tire inflation.

My personal vehicle has a computer which calculates my average MPG as I drive. Typically, that value has been 20.9 MPG during my normal driving.

After Obama's suggestion, I checked my tires and they were at 25 PSI. This is below the recommended pressure of 32 PSI. I went to the local service station and topped off the air. BTW, air at my local station is FREE - no charge, zero, zippo. Got it Newt?

I also changed my driving habits to try to increase mileage, slower starts, better timing of traffic lights, etc. My new average mileage is 23 MPG (2.1 MPG higher, a full 10% increase). This is equivalent to a 10% reduction in fuel costs. I use about 40 gal /month. Assume $4.00 per gal, 10% off is 40 cents/gal. Time 40 gal/month equals $16 per month savings. Even if I had to pay $1 for air and checked once a month, I'm still saving $15 per month or $180 per year.

Also note to Paladin: Don't assume the guys changing the oil are checking the tires - they were supposed to be doing that for me and tires on all my vehicles were way low. One car had 2 tires correct and 2 low, like they forgot to check the other side. You definitely need to check them yourself.

    Obama for the win!

  95. blackjackshellac Says:

Black is white, good is bad, evil is liberal. This is the position of these people, there is no arguing with them because they are paid stooges for the oil companies (and the rest of the military industrial complex).

The issue is about saving energy, not about saving money. Saving energy is extremely easy to do just by checking one's tire pressure, and remarkably this energy saving translates directly into a savings of money. Woohoo, save money, and send big oil the finger for screwing you for the past century.

  96. ucsbclassics53 Says:

I really hope the average Republican will not take Gingrich's claims at face value...Then again, if they have to pay more at the pump because they refuse to inflate their tires, well I don't have much sympathy for them.

This is another example that the "old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri
