Diplomats: Bush was Musharraf’s ‘last holdout’ in Washington.

Pakistani newspaper Dawn reports that that “diplomatic sources in Washington” reveal that President Bush was President Musharraf’s “last holdout” in the U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice “had long given up” on Musharraf, but Bush “remained faithful” to his “close ally and personal friend”:

bush_musharraf_pals1.jpgAmbassador Patterson argued that if Washington continued supporting Mr Musharraf it would end up stoking massive anti-American feelings in Pakistan. [...]

President Bush was the last holdout,” said the expert. “But after a good luncheon at the White House with people who had their hearts in the right place, Mr Bush also realised that he can no longer save Mr Musharraf.” The prime minister took a team of “Musharraf experts” with him to the luncheon and they played a key role in persuading Mr Bush to stop supporting the Pakistani leader.

The paper adds that the administration endorsed Musharraf’s departure once it was assured that he “would not be arrested, prosecuted or punished in any other way.” (HT: Juan Cole)

Precisely why Pelosi and Reid should have begun Impeachment hearings. Bush would have resigned, because cowards never stay and fight.

Why is Musharraf wearing a flag pin?

Re: “who had their hearts in the right place”?!? Excuse me? And just where is that place at?

  5. upside99 says:

So Dubya in effect arranged a pardon for Musharraf before he left office. How convenient!

Maybe a sign of what is to come over the next 5 months in this country.

Do you think if we give Bush the same deal he will go away now? Oh…I forgot…that would give us Cheney for the last 5 months. Nevermind, let the idiot stay. Just as long as Congress stomps on him every time he tries to do more harm to this country.

And after all Bush has meant to Musharraf, why in the world would Kristol think that Musharraf would align with Obama? Wouldn’t it make more sense to joke about Musharraf being McCain’s veep?

Oh yeah — Kristol wants to paint Obama as the scary secret Muslim, not McCain.

Takes one (fascist thug, Bush) to know one (fascist thug, Musharraf)…

In my other opinion, Mikhail Saakashvili, the President of the Republic of Georgia, along with Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rove and McCain should have to face trial for war crimes committed by the Georgian military in their slaughter of some three thousand South Ossetians, August 7-10. They bombed and machine-gunned innocent civilians (no military bases in Tskhinvali, the capital of the Republic of South Ossetia). They also murdered some seven hundred South Ossetian children in their criminal assault. War criminals all. The Georgian military was equipped and trained by the U.S. and Israel.

    Bilbo,
What kind of prosecutor refuses to charge and prosecute a rapist because behind him, lurks another rapist? Keep excusing the mess that our Hose Representative allow and you then excuse INCOMPETENCE! What proof do you hang your hat on that these spineless critters that took an Oath to: “…support and defend the Constitution of the U.S.A. FAITHFULLY, without mental reservations or a purpose of evasion” will suddenly change their mind and live up to their obligation? Hell, the majority of them support a man to be the next Decider who voted for his ability, should he become that next Decider, to authorize surviellience upon ANY American Warrantlessly, and there ain’t nothing you can do about it.

Dubya was always an excellent judge of “horse flesh” (despite being afraid of horses?) as witnessed by his trust and liking for Putin!

Am I the only one who thinks it shouldn’t matter a flying f#ck what any american politician thinks of Pakistiani politics or whose running thier country? Arent we all into like, countries having freedumbs to choose who they want to choose and stuff? Shouldnt we blindly support their democratic choices like McCain and McBush are insisting we do in IRaq?

It would really, really be ironically amusing if someday, maybe far in the future, a democratically elected leader of Iraq expresses his sypathies for Bin Laden much like the current Iraqi leaders whom we pay to protect are now openly expressing their sympathy for Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran…

If we ever attacked Iran, any speculation about how much of the weaponry we provided Iraqis woudl be used against our own troops? The massive pro-Hezbollah rallies in Iraq last time
Israel attacked Lebanon should give us some clue….

Musharraf is expected to leave Pakistan. Mentioned as likely places for the heavy handed dictator to land? Turkey and Dubai

Where will Bush and Cheney retire? What country will house their run from the consequences of their malicious rule?

In foreign policy euphemisms, “bringing freedom and democracy to the rest of the world” means having them do what Bushco tells them to do and sell us oil real cheap. Meanwhile, they were probably better off with their own dictator rather than ours.

  22. A Patriot Acting says:

This just gets more and more convoluted. I just read over at TPMMuckraker that Harriet on-the-lam Miers, Bush sicophant and former Supreme Court nominee, is lobbying for the Pakistan People’s Party (Bhutto’s party and direct opposition to Mushy). Her firm signed the contract in March.

    curiouser and curiouser…

Hate to say it, but I am jealous of Pakistan. Their government functions at a much higher level than ours. At least they have checks and balances. If a corrupt leader is in power, they are not above the law and are removed.
Meanwhile, they have nukes and are friendly to OBL, essentially granting him asylum. What’s the next step- giving OBL nukes?
Bushco really F’ed up and all you hear are crickets.

  25. Marie says:

Harriet Meiers is now a lobbyist for Pakistan.

Harriet Miers, former White House counsel, one-time Supreme Court nominee and current partner at Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell, can now add lobbyist for the Pakistan People’s Party and the Embassy of Pakistan to her resume, according to documents filed with the DOJ earlier this month.

What a chimpy move. he embraces Musharraf although he has nukes, killed civilians, may have a hand at the assassination Bhutto and is a dictator. Almost everything he claimed Hussein was.

    No shit. Wow.

All I hear about is poor georgia. Russia bad. The old Bear has awaken.

chimpy is making more friends with deadly people who he claims are good men but do bad things. Only the repugs can reconcile the two.

When is the msm going to report facts and not lick chimpy’s crack?

Pretty sad that Pakistan is strong enough to get rid of their incompetent leader while our politicians and citizens are dragging our feet in a country that claims to be a ’superpower’.

I remember when Dubya was in Pakistan and said it proved you could have democracy in an Arab country. Only problems—it is not a democracy and not Arab!
