DMI poll: Majority of middle class supports progressive policies.

Today, the Drum Major Institute released its first annual survey on the Middle Class and Public Policy, showing a “broad consensus” among middle class Americans in support of progressive policies like universal health care:

The poll also found that 78 percent of the middle class wants to expand SCHIP while 68 percent want to allow employees to be represented by a union when a majority of co-workers sign cards requesting representation.

Why does the American middle class support socialism and hate what America stands for?

    The choices:

    >Nationalize healthcare and include everyone.

    >Ration heathcare and people will be treated like pieces of equipment- if they are too old and in bad shape, too bad.Not worh putting more money into it.

    >Eliminate outrageous compensation packages for the CEO’s and eliminating extravagant benefits they receive.

None of the choices are good, but is there a better alternative?

Do they do a Troll Poll?

I suppose it would be a waste of time, given the fact they don’t read much, lack comprehension skills and only say what they’re told to say.

Speaking of Trolls, one just puked in aisle #9…

  12. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Maybe TP ordered the ACME_Troll.

I’m pretty sure it was delivered in a package wrapped in brown paper and tied up with twine. Probably had “ACME” stamped on the side too, and was delivered in a big truck that stopped in the desert, dumped the box, and sped off again in a cloud of cartoon dust.

How about this Progressive idea; Allow every family to have any size house they want and any type of car they choose at an affordable price they choose.
    __________________________________________________

Except that “progressive” idea isn’t one I’ve ever heard before — no real progressive would suggest such a thing.

I assume you are trying to equate basic health care with luxury homes and luxury cars, which is really kind of stupid. Basic health care is a necessity and should be a fundamental right in any human society, like basic education. Luxury homes and luxury cars are not necessities (it can be argued that having some kind of roof over one’s head is a necessity, but the issue of homelessness is for another thread).

Your argument makes about as much sense as equating oxygen with plasma televisions. Try again.

missmolly, do you really want to invite the troll to try again?

I know it’s only polite, but what are the chances that he’ll be able to hit the ball this time? It’s gotten so that if he hits the tee and knocks the ball to the ground, we have to pretend that he got a hit.

25%…25%…hmmm, let me see…what’s familiar about that number?

I would venture to guess this quarter of the population are the Bushco kool-aid drinkers. If Bush told them that jumping off a cliff was good for them, they’d be lining up like lemmings.

We do? Can’t we still grab the ball and tag him out? The thing we have to remember is that when a troll is up at bat, there’s really no need for outfielders. Everybody can move in, since no hit will really go very far.

This is because progressive ideas are common sense ideas, despite the righties attempting to equate them with communism, socialism, Marxism, and even fascism.

If people are hungry enough, they’ll take food whether it’s in “progressive” packaging or not. If they aren’t all that hungry, they are more likely to fall in line with whatever ideology they have been taught to subscribe to.

Take health care, for example. According to this chart, 75% of the country thinks a national plan that provides affordable insurance to all is an excellent or a good idea. Many people say so because that’s a much better deal than they are getting right now — either no health insurance, insurance that’s crippling their budget, or insurance they are in danger of losing.

  28. 5th Estate says:

shoeless: Who are the 25% who do not want affordable health insurance and the 29% who do not want paid medical leave?

Well a proportion of them would be politicians who are happy to accept both for themselves but so far have refused to provide the same beneficial programs to everyone else.

Well, Ralph…I despair for America sometimes.

I heard this statistic somewhere, that only 18% of Americans could identify a picture of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and it just sort of whumped it home to me that we are truly a nation of morons.

So many Americans want decent health care, good government — and yet they *still* vote against their own interests by voting for Republican elitists like Bush and McSame…

    *sigh*

It’s because we have so many people who will buy into the rhetoric from Karl and his gang — that it’s better to shoot yourself in the foot than to vote for a scary elitist black secret Muslim.

These people would willingly starve to death before accepting food if the righties told them the food would make them fat.

    Something smells.

  46. barfly says:

And the further I dig, the worse it smells. I’ve been to the site, and read the full report, but I can’t find mention of the methodology or sampling used to reach these conclusions.

Perhaps someone better at sleuthing such wonk could locate, and post it?

  47. Leftside Annie says:

Barfly – Michael Moore’s book “Dude Where’s My Country” (I think) contains all kinds of documented statistics that bear out this study.

  48. barfly says:

The stench is now reaching boiled sauer craut pungency.

I’ve checked the site again, and the link contained inside the actual PDF doc, kins back to the press release.

TP, didn’t you guys do any research on this “report?”

  49. barfly says:

Sorry Annie, but this one smells cooked. Why no methodology?

  50. barfly says:

Tp’s going to look awfully silly in the blogosphere, if it gets around they’re posting polls that play hide-and-seek with theirsampling and methodology.

It should have either been at the front of the press release, or at the end of the actual report. Nada on both.

  51. barfly says:

And where are all the “learned lights” to discuss and dissect the matter, when I mention a poll that supposedly validates the progressive worldview, is extremely light on substance?

I don’t want to drop an H bomb, but it sure seems strange.

Oh, I see another reason some are treating this thread like Chernobyl: they’re already on record politically extrapolating about it’s supposed substance.

I guess we lowly-paid blue-collar workers will have to do the heavy intellectual lifting as well.

  54. barfly says:

I mean, how many posters on this thread are highly-degreed and intellectually accomplished individuals, yet failed to question that little asterisk? And you guys are supposed to be on the ball?

    It is to laugh.

  55. ralph the wonder llama says:

Good points, barfly. I agree with you — we should be just as intellectually rigorous when considering information that reinforces our views as we considering stuff that clashes.

    Good work.

  56. green says:

I talked with a young man the other day who is paying $800 a month for health insurance for his wife, child and himself. I think that’s outrageous. I have no health insurance and no job and although I’m looking for a job, the field I work in (social services) is paying half what it did just three years ago. This appears to be “The Shock Doctrine” at work.
